This one-year pilot project (Fall 2016 to Summer 2017) funded by the Wikimedia Foundation follows an initiative conducted in 2013 and 2014 in [[w:en:Manawan|Manawan]] ([[w:en:Quebec|Québec]], [[w:en:Canada|Canada]]) by a linguist from the [[w:en:Leipzig University|Leipzig University]], a highschool computer teacher and an Atikamekw language keeper. Together they conducted an educational project entitled "Wikipetia Project" involving students from Otapi Highschool in Manawan to create articles on Wikipedia written in Atikamekw. By the end of this project, the students had created more than 160 articles.<ref name="SRC" />

The current project partners include Manawan Otapi secondary school, Conseil Atikamekw de Manawan, [[w:fr:Conseil de la Nation Atikamekw|Conseil de la Nation Atikamekw]] (CNA), Wikimedia Canada, [[w:fr:Université du Québec en Outaouais|Université du Québec en Outaouais]] (UQO) and the [[w:fr:Institut national de la recherche scientifique|Institut national de la recherche scientifique]] (INRS, Urbanisation, Culture, Société Research Center) with the collaboration of several members of the Atikamekw community. 

===Translating the interface: is Wikipedia animated?===
The [[w:en:Atikamekw|Atikamekw Nehirowisiw Nation]] is one of the few [[w:en:Aboriginal peoples in Canada|Aboriginal peoples in Canada]] where virtually the entire population still speaks the language, making the [[w:en:Atikamekw language|Atikamekw language]] one of the most vibrant Aboriginal languages among First Nations in Canada. It is also the language of instruction in two elementary schools of the Nation. The Institut linguistique Atikamekw (ILA) and the techno-linguists of the Nation are working to create new words and to standardize the language. 

In order to create an atikamekw version of the [[w:en:MediaWiki|MediaWiki]] interface, members of the community are inventing new terms to translate "homepage", "free license" or "upload". Instead of translating literally, they prefer to mobilize traditional references, often linked to the ancestral territory, because this allows to appropriate technical modernity while transmitting the atikamekw cultural imagination. It is also up to the community to define its own rules for the use of the encyclopedia: acceptance of oral sources, notoriety criteria for article topics that are open to indigenous realities, protection of sensitive information. It is a process of reflecting on the best ways to take advantage of this tool while adapting it to the atikamekw epistemology. Among the questions raised by translation is that of the classes of names: the Atikamekw language does not distinguish between the masculine and the feminine, but it distinguishes between animate and inanimate things. Is Wikipedia animated? The participants decided that it is.

Wikimedia Canada's mission is to educate Canadian communities about the development of free and open knowledge in all languages, including Aboriginal languages. The objective of this strategy is to collaborate with Aboriginal communities in Canada and to introduce Aboriginal language speakers to Wikipedia with the goal that they become autonomous contributors in the development of content in their languages. It is in line with Article 13 of the UN [[w:fr:Déclaration des droits des peuples autochtones|Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples]], which establishes the right to preserve, revitalize and develop indigenous languages. These are an integral part of Canadian culture.

The project is divided into three parts: training, pedagogical project and research project. The first includes training sessions with the Atikamekw community given by volunteers from Wikimedia Canada with the goal to make the community autonomous in their work on Wikimedia projects. An initial training took place at the Otapi secondary school in Manawan on October 24th, 2016. Another training and discussion session was held with the CNA in [[w:en:La Tuque|La Tuque]] on November 28th, 2016. In May 2017 there will be a session of photographic documentation in Manawan. The pedagogic project is taking place at the Otapi school from November 2016 to May 2017. In their computer class, students are writing articles in the '''[[incubator:Wp/atj/Otitikowin|Wikipetia Atikamekw Nehiromowin]]'''. 

The research component is intended to document the pilot project with the aim to create a toolkit and a set of recommendations that could be used in other similar initiatives. It builds on discussions with community representatives about the best ways to share traditional knowledge on Wikimedia platforms. The issue of compatibility between free licenses and the principles of ethical research [http://fnigc.ca/ocap.html OCAP] (ownership, control, access and possession), set out by Canadian First Nations, will also be addressed during a research seminar. Representatives from the [http://fnigc.ca/ First Nations Information Governance Center] and the [[w:ee:Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec|Quebec National Archives and Library]] will join the discussion. This conversation will help to better understand the conditions that facilitate the creation of Native content in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, and to raise awareness among the wikimedia community about the specificities of indigenous knowledge. The project will conclude with a panel at the [[wm2017:Wikimania|Wikimania Montréal]] conference  in August 2017. The longer-term goal is to replicate similar projects with other Canadian Aboriginal communities, or elsewhere in the world, and broadly share this experience with the international Wikimedia movement.

The next phase of the project is to organize a [[incubator:Wp/atj/Projet:Chasse photographique|photographic hunting]] on the ancestral territory, the [[w:en:Nitaskinan|Nitaskinan]], which will take place in the Atikamekw communities of [[w:en:Manawan|Manawan]], d'[[w:en:Obedjiwan|Opitciwan]] and [[w:en:Wemotaci|Wemotaci]], as well as in the towns of La Tuque and [[w:en:Joliette|Joliette]]. 

Before the start of the project, there were only a dozen free photos representing the atikamekw community in Wikimedia Commons and they dated back to the 1970s. The goal of this photographic rally is to better reflect the present vitality of the community by photographing not only the buildings but also people, traditional activities, lakes and rivers, animals and the territory in general.

The photographic hunting will take place from April 26 to May 31. An upload workshop will be organized on the last day of the rally to help the participants populate the [[Commons:Category:Atikamekw|Atikamekw category in Commons]].

Ce projet pilote d’une année (de l’automne 2016 à l’été 2017) subventionné par la Wikimedia Foundation fait suite à une initiative menée à [[w:fr:Manawan|Manawan]] ([[w:fr:Québec|Québec]], [[w:fr:Canada|Canada]]) en 2013 et 2014 par une linguiste de l’[[w:fr:Université de Leipzig|Université de Leipzig]] ainsi qu’un enseignant en informatique et le gardien de la langue de Manawan. Ensemble, ils ont mené un projet pédagogique intitulé « Projet Wikipetia » impliquant des étudiants de l’école secondaire Otapi pour créer des articles écrits en atikamekw sur Wikipédia. ===Traduction de l'interface: Wikipédia est-elle animée ?===

La [[w:fr:Attikameks|Nation Atikamekw Nehirowisiw]] est l’une des rares communautés [[w:fr:Autochtones du Canada|Autochtones du Canada]] dont la quasi-totalité de la population parle toujours la langue, faisant de la [[w:fr:Atikamekw (langue)|langue atikamekw]] l’une des langues autochtones les plus vivantes parmi les Premières Nations du Canada. Il s’agit d’ailleurs de la langue d’enseignement dans deux écoles primaires de la nation. L’Institut linguistique atikamekw (ILA) et les techno-linguistes de la nation travaillent à la création de nouveaux mots et à la standardisation de la langue. 

Dans le but de créer une version atikamekw de l'interface [[w:fr:MediaWiki|MediaWiki]], les membres de la communauté travaillent à inventer des termes pour traduire "page d'accueil", "licence libre" ou "téléverser". Au lieu de traduire littéralement, ils préfèrent mobiliser des références traditionnelles, souvent liées au territoire ancestral, car cela permet de s'approprier la modernité technique tout en transmettant l'imaginaire culturel atikamekw. Il revient aussi à la communauté de définir ses propres règles d'usage de l'encyclopédie : acceptation des sources orales, critères de notoriété des sujets qui soient ouverts aux réalités autochtones, protection d'informations sensibles. Il s'agit de réfléchir aux meilleures façons de profiter de cet outil tout en l'adaptant à l'épistémologie atikamekw. Parmi les questions soulevées par la traduction, il y a celle des classes de noms : la langue atikamekw ne fait la distinction entre le genre masculin et féminin, mais par contre, elle différencie les choses animées et inanimées. Wikipédia est-elle animée ? Les participants ont décidé que oui.   

Wikimédia Canada, parmi ses missions, vise à sensibiliser les communautés canadiennes au développement d’un savoir libre et gratuit dans toutes les langues du Canada, y compris les langues autochtones. L’objectif de cette stratégie est de collaborer avec les communautés autochtones du Canada et d’initier les locuteurs de langues autochtones à Wikipédia afin qu’ils deviennent des contributeurs autonomes dans le développement de contenu dans leurs langues. Il s’aligne avec l’article 13 de la [[w:fr:Déclaration des droits des peuples autochtones|Déclaration des droits des peuples autochtones]] de l'Organisation des Nations unies qui établit le droit de préserver, de revitaliser et de développer les langues autochtones. Celles-ci font partie intégrante de la culture canadienne.

Le projet est divisé en trois volets : la formation, le projet pédagogique et le projet de recherche.  Le premier volet inclut des sessions de formation avec la communauté atikamekw donnée par des bénévoles de Wikimédia Canada afin de rendre la communauté autonome dans leur travail sur les projets Wikimédia. La première formation a eu lieu à l’école secondaire Otapi de Manawan le 24 octobre 2016. Une seconde session de formation et de discussion a eu lieu avec le CNA à [[w:en:La Tuque|La Tuque]] le 28 novembre 2016. En mai 2017, il y aura une session de documentation photographique à Manawan. Le projet pédagogique se déroule à l’école secondaire Otapi de novembre 2016 à mai 2017. La question de la compatibilité des licences libres avec les principes de recherche éthique [http://fnigc.ca/fr/pcap.html PCAP] (propriété, contrôle, accès et possession), énoncés par les Premières Nations du Québec, sera également abordée lors d'un séminaire de travail, auquel prendront part un représentant du [http://fnigc.ca/fr Centre de gouvernance de l'information des Premières Nations] et une archiviste de [[w:fr:Bibliothèques et Archives nationales du Québec|Bibliothèques et Archives nationales du Québec]]. Il vise à mieux comprendre les conditions qui facilitent la création de contenus autochtones dans Wikipédia et les autres projets Wikimédia, mais aussi à sensibiliser la commuanuté wikimédienne en ce qui concerne la spécificité des cultures et savoirs autochtones. Le projet se conclura par un panel à la conférence [[wm2017:Wikimania/fr|Wikimania Montréal]] en août 2017. Dans le cadre du projet, une [[incubator:Wp/atj/Projet:Chasse photographique|chasse photographique]] est organisée sur le territoire ancestral, le [[w:fr:Nitaskinan|Nitaskinan]], qui se déroulera dans les communautés atikamekw de [[w:fr:Manawan|Manawan]], d'[[w:fr:Obedjiwan|Opitciwan]] et de [[w:fr:Wemotaci|Wemotaci]] mais également dans les villes de La Tuque et [[w:fr:Joliette|Joliette]]. 

Avant le début du projet, il n'existait qu'une dizaine de photos libres représentant la communauté atikamekw dans Wikimedia Commons et elle dataient des années 1970. L'objectif est de mieux refléter la vitalité actuelle de la communauté, en photographiant non seulement les bâtiments, mais également les personnalités marquantes, les activités traditionnelles, les lacs et rivières, les animaux et le territoire en général.
