Lucario is a fictional character in the Pokémon franchise. It was the second fourth-generation Pokémon to be revealed, after Munchlax.

It appears in the 8th Pokémon movie, Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. Lucario was speculated to be a legendary Pokémon, because of its relationship with Mew in this movie. It has recently been proven that Lucario is not a legendary, as it has a pre-evolution.

Lucario's name has been speculated by some to be a Japanese pronunciation of "Oracle" (O-ri-ca-lu) when the syllables are pronounced in reverse order (similar to how the name Beldum derived from the word dumbbell), although this has not been confirmed. Lucario may also come from Cairo, an Egyptian city, since it has been compared to Anubis in appearance.

Initially, most people tended to refer to this Pokémon as Rukario, which is simply a basic Hepburn romanization of ルカリオ. The official romanized Japanese name is, like the English name, Lucario (as depicted on a lot of Japanese merchandise).

In the video games
Lucario is a Pokémon that appears in the Nintendo DS versions of Diamond and Pearl. Though it was speculated for some time that Lucario was to be a Legendary Pokémon, that piece of information was soon disproved. Lucario is not a legendary pokemon, because it has a pre-evolution, Rioru. Coro Coro Magazine has revealed that its types are Fighting and Steel, a new type combination. CoroCoro Magazine has also said Lucario has two possible abilities: Inner Focus, or Humble Heart. His special attack is Wave-Guiding Bomb, now known to us as Pulse Bomb. Lucario is used by the third Sinnoh Gym Leader as well as Sinnoh's Elite Four Champion.

Lucario's attack and Special attack are very high, along with decent speed. This makes Lucario a very formidable opponent, seeing as it can attack first and do lots of damage. This technique is often referred to as "sweeping".

In other games beyond Diamond and Pearl, Lucario is mentioned in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, where 15,000 Rescue Points will give you "Lucario Rank" and a statue next to your house in the shape of Lucario. Alakazam also refers to Lucario after clearing the initial story, saying that his exploits as a rescue team leader are legendary.

In the anime
In the opening sequence to the American dub of Pokémon Advanced Battle, Lucario is seen resting against a tree with Mew flying around. After about a month of this sequence, the introduction was replaced with Pikachu using Iron Tail (a Pokemon move). Lucario has made several unoffical appearances, one of which was in the 9th season, "Pokemon Battle Frontier". However, its appearance in the eighth movie seems to be its only main and official role in franchise thus far.

Lucario is the star Pokémon in the movie "Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew." In the movie, Lucario is a servant to a nobleman named Sir Aaron in a Renaissance-themed city called Cameron Palace. Lucario thinks of Sir Aaron as his master, and nothing more. After Aaron traps him in a magic staff at the film's outset, Lucario begins questioning any Pokémon-human relationship (done before with Mewtwo). Lucario demonstrates an adeptness to "Aura". The Lucario in the movie can also speak, the fifth speaking non-legendary Pokemon after Team Rocket's Meowth, most notably, and others including Gastly, Lapras from the episode "Holiday Hi-Jinx" (although this was telepathy, not actual speech), and Slowking in the second movie and Lugia.

In other media
In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Lucario is one of the Pokémon featured in the Japanese eighth movie half-deck. There has been other Japanese promotional cards featuring Lucario, as well as other fourth generation Pokemon. Lucario hasn't appeared in a US card yet.
