== Institute for Legislative Analysis Deletion ==
== isp question ==
{{Collapse|1=Good Evening, this is now the second time the Institute for Legislative Analysis page has been deleted. I am both requesting both its un-deletion and a review by admin into the past deletion actions on the basis of WP:COI.

Upon the original flagging of the page for deletion (roughly two weeks ago) I made a long list of edits in an attempt to appease those seeking the deletion for WP:ORGCRITE. I added these additional four sources to meet WP:ORGCRITE: https://www.foxnews.com/politics/new-conservative-group-grades-lawmakers-limited-government-principles-see-where-yours-stands; https://www.gillettenewsrecord.com/news/wyoming/article_17db6053-4975-5b50-b1e0-3fe3ef4e4317.html; https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/washington-secrets/2453025/nikki-haley-tops-limited-government-score-card/; https://marylandmatters.org/2023/06/14/political-notes-a-new-scorecard-gop-claims-vindication-in-poll-and-perezs-new-post/.

Despite the additions and edits made, these individuals still sought to delete ILA alleging it is not a notable organization. To be clear, any objective and rational review of the ILA’s work and influence confirms it is a major player in conservative politics. ILA’s CEO was recently named one of the 500 most influential people in public policy due to ILA’s work - https://www.washingtonian.com/2024/05/02/washington-dcs-500-most-influential-people-of-2024/?__cf_chl_tk=6efEngfVVSbtKjs3ytmihacmdrBsnFaeLcmivLKBr_E-1717299913-0.0.1.1-9001.
== Don Bevan ==

Is Don Bevan author of "Stalag 17" still alive? Where would I find this answer? We were friends and he became ill and moved away. Would like to know if he is still alive.05:07, 19 July 2011 (UTC)~ <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">— Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[Special:Contributions/69.39.49.77|69.39.49.77]] ([[User talk:69.39.49.77|talk]]) </span><!-- Template:Unsigned IP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->
:I'm not finding a lot of sources on Donald Bevan the playwright. None of them, including the Wikipedia article [[Donald Bevan]] nor his [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0079654/ IMDB page] indicate a death date. He was alive as recently as 2007, since he gave an interview with the [[New York Post]] about a possible staging of his play by the movie director Spike Lee, see [http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/nypost/access/1295544121.html?dids=1295544121:1295544121&FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&type=current&date=Jun+27%2C+2007&author=Michael+Riedel&pub=New+York+Post&desc=GREAT+ESCAPE+-+SPIKE+LEE+DOES+THE+FIGHT+THING+WITH+STALAG+17&pqatl=google]. Of course, the absence of evidence isn't the evidence of absence, but as of 4 years ago he was alive. I can't find anything else in Google News archives indicating an obit or anything, so my guess is he hasn't died yet. --[[User:Jayron32|<font style="color:#000099">Jayron</font>]]'''''[[User talk:Jayron32|<font style="color:#009900">32</font>]]''''' 05:40, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Plus, if that was all not enough, I learned a couple of days ago that the ILA is closely followed by Members of Congress. In fact, over two dozen U.S. Representatives posted about a recent ILA report in the last 48 hours alone. Upon reviewing a couple lawmaker posts, I learned that the ILA is actually an entity of the Conservative Partnership Institute – the most powerful MAGA org tied to President Trump and Mark Meadows. Therefore, I thought I could finally without a doubt put the entire debate to rest - there are countless articles that demonstrate the notability of CPI, including an extensive one from the New York Times. This solved every possible concern those seeking to delete ILA could have. I was in the process of adding additional documentation to the ILA page (such as financial disclosures on CPI and ILA with same address, members of Congress acknowledgement, etc.). However, before I could make the updates to the ILA page, it was deleted for yet the 2nd time.
:A [http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi social security death index search], while also only providing negative evidence, indicates he is still alive.--[[User:Fuhghettaboutit|Fuhghettaboutit]] ([[User talk:Fuhghettaboutit|talk]]) 12:49, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

== HI ==

Since the ILA is one of the top players in conservative politics I could not understand why the page was coming under such attack for deletion. Therefore, I started looking at the profiles of those seeking its deletion. Interestingly, they appear to be philosophically progressive. While I am unsure if there is a political motivation behind their advocacy to delete the page, I think it is fair to say they probably do not have much understanding of conservative politics, especially compared to someone myself who closely follows conservative non-profits.

But perhaps even more interesting, when doing additional research into ILA’s financials, I found out that the American Conservative Union has filed a lawsuit against the ILA claiming multiple counts of “unfair competition in the marketplace”. Apparently, both of the orgs produce scorecards. And it just so happens that these deletion flags came around the same time as the filing of the lawsuit.

Hello! I represent the Canadian hip hop group Conspirituality from Vancouver B.C. We formed the Group in 2007 and are still active in 2024. In 2011 two academics took our name, wrote an academic journal called the Emergence of Conspirituality. In the journal we are cited as the inventors of the Word Conspirituality. We first used the word in 2003. And our Wikipedia page was taken over and rewritten with out mentioning us. In 2018 adding insult to injury a podcast also took our name, briefly citing us on their website home page as the creators of the word. No one has ever contacted us. I’m not looking to cause issues. I just wanted to contact you guys because I want to correct some things properly and be added to the wiki page. We deserve to be part of the conversation, we have more than enough evidence and receipts and there’s mistakes and lies on the page as we speak. I was hoping that someone who reads this might be able to help me with some advice and some guidance on how to do, everything properly

::Thank you for sharing that, I appreciate knowing that. We didn’t create the page and did not know at the time, that it was not made properly. This is the exact reason I wanted to contact someone on here, to find out the situation Does this mean 14 years later, we are not allowed to try again? We are cited in an academic journal of Contemporary religion as the creators of the word Conspirituality (certainly we should be at least mentioned now in the conversation for our contribution) ????? The page now states that the writers of the journal created the term ( Which is not true, we are mentioned in the first note of the journal, we have also been written about in two published books, we have an IMDb page, and movie credits for a documentary we are featured in. I been working on some softwares by adding mods to it, to be more realistic. These softwares are games on the markets and posted on wikis. Now some of these games arent that good, til someone can improve it. I just started this and updating my user's profile and expanding Japanese Warships in WWII. Wasnt sure if i can or allow to upload an file for users to download or giving links for them to switch and download from there. I just want to improve the games in WWII mostly and help expands wikipedia sources. One of these software's forum is out of date and spammers have taken a toll there and look like it will be abandoned soon. :When you say you have “been working on some software,” do you mean that you have been creating/editing encyclopedia articles about games, or do you mean you have been programing the games themselves? Wikipedia contains encyclopedia articles about games, but it does not contain games themselves. So if you are thinking of uploading game files, sorry, there is no place for that here. —[[User:TEB728|teb728]] [[User talk:TEB728|t]] [[Special:Contributions/TEB728|c]] 12:05, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
I havent posted anything on encyclopedia articles about games yet, just updating some Japanese warships at the moments. I didnt think im allow to post any files for that games i mention, but wasnt sure if i can drop a link for them to goto and download it from there. Only changing some codes to be more accurate while in game like it took place in WWII. If you goto "Pacific Storm" page you will see article (Reception) that have negative feedbacks. I manage to correct most details and have some fans out there to make more models to improve the game itself over the years. Later when i get all this completed, then i can update that page (Pacific Storm) if i am allow to. So others can take a peek and try it out for fun. I have been recently working on an article about an ongoing climate protest in Berlin and an editor who I have difficulty with in the past just rolled back some recent edits and removed most of the images I had added. Their commit messages were not especially focused nor helpful. I know from past experience if I engage with said editor, I will get swamped with Wikipedia legalese. If I roll back the edits in good faith and with considered explanations, an edit war will doubtless arise.
Thank for your time guys for helping me with this details...

I should add that my interactions with other editors are normally productive and respectful. But in this case though, if I do react, conflict seems inevitable and quite possibly even sought. The said, that user's talk page also seems to consist mostly of strife with other editors [when I last interacted]. And I have had experience there too, batting stuff out in user space, when that discussion should really occur on Wikipedia talk pages in a more open and collegial context.
*I decided to stop working on wiki due to lack of trusts and teamworks. Sorry it didnt worked out for some of you guys. For now on, i will keep the details to myself and expand it elsewhere. I manage to undo all my works by removing the details and leave the rest for you guys!
I want to say one more thing before i closed this, the informations on some ships on WWII arent correct. If you dont use common sense and read the details more closer and use judgements, then you will get the big pictures. Compare to other ships arent that different, for example when i was changing the Mogami Class Cruiser and max speed is 37knots. It should been 34.5 knots at full load (12,400tons) the Mogami Cruiser at that time was light/standard load around 8,500tons. Later on will be added torpedo protections and switch to 8"50 guns instead of triple 6" guns. Also added crew listed as peacetime (minimum crew) to wartime and giving XXX/XXX tags. As well the range of the ships based on fuel (oil) by tonnage and calulate by cruising speed. Now some of these ships that have been posted are way off.
I thinking about having a book publish someday and hopefully we can clear some of this up, infact you guys will never going to complete this without doing some solid ground works. There just no books out there have complete details on them, of course you cant just guess them, but using calulation measurements and best knowledges as possible.

What can be done? Are there forums for resolving disputes of this type? Do I have to endure some unpleasant editing interactions before I can make a case? Are there proactive solutions on offer? Can some someone senior oversee the content development and adjudicate on the edit history as needed?

Indeed, the editing style on display seems to be solely confined to roll‑back and argument. The actual substantive contributions and good‑faith edits seem negligible, based on my past experiences. Surely such patterns of editing are identifiable by simple metrics? Or is there nothing that can be done against what appears to be hostile editing. Please help{{nbsp}}{{endash}} this is likely to be very unpleasant and demotivating going forward.
:I'm sorry you feel this way, but perhaps you misunderstood what Wikipedia is for. It's an encyclopedia and '''[[WP:V|verifiability]]''' is a core policy. [[WP:Original research|Original research]] is simply not acceptable, sorry. There are certain things that constitute as common sense knowledge (i.e. information which do not require sources like "The sum of 1 and 1 is 2"), and the speed of warships isn't one of them. If the information does not exist, we just leave them blank, not make something up.

And I should add that one roll-back happened so fast that the editor concerned would not have had ''any'' opportunity to read the source material, let alone make a considered judgement about the suitability and accuracy of that contribution. :@[[User:RobbieIanMorrison|RobbieIanMorrison]] You have taken the correct first step by raising the matter on the page at [[Talk:Starving for honesty climate hunger strike, Berlin, Germany]], as per [[WP:BRD|our usual process]]. The guidance the other editor is relying on seems to be [[WP:NOTGALLERY]] and that we require [[WP:INDEPENDENT]] sources. I'm sure that other interested parties will see this Help Desk thread and weigh in with comments on the Talk Page. The place to raise issues about another editor's behaviour is [[WP:ANI]] but I would advise against that at present. [[User:Michael D. Turnbull|Mike Turnbull]] ([[User talk:Michael D. ::{{ping|Michael D. Turnbull}} Thanks. My preference is for dialog and due process and not escalation. And I understand that editing judgements can vary. ::::{{ping|Michael D. Turnbull}} All the images were from me. And I willing concede that other editors should be involved in their assessment and selection. But there are very few quality open licensed images to be had. So I would be very happy if other editors could review that selection in a considered manner. But any kind of good process was certainly not evident to date in my view. (Moreover I sometimes put my potential images on talk pages and let other editors decide entirely, but time rather precludes that process in this case.)
::::I also want to mention briefly that one important passage I added (important in my estimation because it involved the German federal economics minister visiting the protest camp and thus quite remarkable in the current political context) was up for approximately '''one minute''' before being rolled back. How can that class as responsible editing? How can anyone check and assess the source and/or understand the merits of that material and then type in a commit message within that timeframe? Exactly how?
::::I don't find the current circumstances very conducive. but I guess I will just have to persevere. Involvement from experienced and neutral editors would be great, because I don't wish to face this quite possibly deteriorating and time-consuming situation alone. Really. :::::{{ping|Michael D. Turnbull}} Anyone: I would like a senior Wikipedia editor to restore the [[Starving for honesty climate hunger strike, Berlin, Germany|Berlin hunger strike article]] to its state prior with reference to the recent controversial edits. In particular, this contribution covering written content should be reverted: {{URL|1=https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Starving_for_honesty_climate_hunger_strike,_Berlin,_Germany&diff=prev&oldid=1226915490}}
:::::The related deletion commit message of "keeping it real. we are not the strike's website" is distinctly unhelpful and also pejorative in my view. Please read that earlier diff and its commit message to see what that content was and why it was added. And as discussed earlier and elsewhere, I believe this contribution to be important and relevant.
:::::In addition, the full set of images should be restored so there can be a useful and sensible discussion on which photographs to retain and which not. And that will be a useful exercise which I particularly welcome.
:::::I should add that I normally enjoy working on Wikipedia and value the input of other editors. But occasionally I{{nbsp}}encounter this style of what one might call "ill{{nbhyph}}informed editing{{nbhyph}}by{{nbhyph}}deletion". And normally accompanied by several aspects: no attempt to rectify issues, no discussions on talk pages, high{{nbhyph}}handed commit messages, and an avalanche of Wikipedia policy acronyms when challenged. And ofttimes, there are mistaken assessments regarding core facts and notability which are usually difficult to shift. In this case exactly, the resulting discussion on the talk page did not move beyond vague generalities and omitted issues.
:::::Please, I{{nbsp}}am asking for help and interest. Editors acting in good faith should be respected and Wikipedia norms and practices followed. And, as I{{nbsp}}understand it (and although I{{nbsp}}am male), this form of broadly arbitrary editing{{nbhyph}}by{{nbhyph}}deletion is particularly difficult for woman editors.
:::::Can we therefore roll back to the earlier positions and then discuss options and rectifications on the talk page? I{{nbsp}}much prefer modification, improvement, and ultimately deletion to be the starting points and not have to argue for restoration in the face of intransigence. Can we agree on that approach? Can someone make the requisite roll{{nbhyph}}backs? Thank you in advance. (And yes I{{nbsp}}know the editor that I{{nbsp}}am in conflict with has administrator status.) BUT over '''[[Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2010_September_24#Filmography_templates|here]]''' is a comment that "current concensus is to format filmographies as sortable tables". ::Definitely want to coordinate this with [[WP:FILM]] rather than working on a single article. ::::For these tables, unlike discography tables, the colors help visually group the entries. Keeping that formatting in the non-rowspan format would give a similar visual grouping. It would lose the visual grouping by date, but keep the grouping by month, and I'm not sure there is substantial value in emphasizing "which ones were same day?". :The French article that you provided is already link to a former English Wikipedia article that is currently a redirect to [[Gaussian elimination]]. If you want to link the two articles, you'll have to go to the French article's Wikidata page (In this case, [https://m.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1195020 here]), remove the frwiki entry, then add the French article to the "languages" sidebar of [[Gaussian elimination]]. == Are images transfers to WikiData working? ==
Hi there-

I use [[Wikipedia:Wiki Shoot Me|Wiki Shoot Me]] to take photos for Wikipedia while I’m traveling. Typically you can identify articles that need photos by looking for yellow dots indicating Wikipedia articles and larger red circles near by indicating WikiData items without photos (as previously these seemed to sync). In two cases recently I noticed articles with CC-licensed images placed correctly in the lead and appropriately sized that did not have their photos synced with WikiData: [https://m.wikidata.org/wiki/Q65056276 National Hotel] and [https://m.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7989973 Wet Mountain Valley]. I know the page image is being picked up because they display correctly on [[Special:Nearby]] using their coordinates: [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Nearby#/coord/38.134444,-105.468056 National Hotel] and [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Nearby#/coord/38.066667,-105.442222 Wet Mountain Valley]. Forgive me if this has already been asked, I looked but couldn't find anything. I want to cite a specific article (Acanthoma fissuratum of the outer auditory canal from a hearing aid, page 304) within [https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1600-0560.1989.tb00057.x this] collection of abstracts. How should I go about this? If I just use a citation generator the title will be "Abstracts of papers presented at the 27th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Dermatopathology" which isn't very helpful. Should I just manually create the citation and use the page number, authors, and title from the specefic article? If so should I include the doi from the collection since that specefic article doesn't have its own doi. Any advice is appreciated, I just want to make sure I am properly citing this source. I use WindowsXP and either Google Chrome or the latest version of Firefox operating on a 32 bit desktop. At first I thought this might be due to my fairly recent switch to Chrome but I don't think so because I get perfect results from other web sites (eg from Mathematica); and whereas Firefox used to give perfect results from wiki it does not do so anymore

During this past month, I've begun to take notice of [[Special:AbuseFilter/1298|a new tag filter]] that detects old-school redirect pages consisting only of "#REDIRECT" and the linked {{#tag:nowiki|[[page target]]}}; [[WP:Categorizing redirects]] now recommends adding an <nowiki>{{R from X}}</nowiki> tag to avoid the "Uncategorized redirect" message in summaries. Planning to take advantage of this new rule any moment from now; before then, can any editors/developers direct me towards a tool (à la [[WP:RATER]] for [[WP:Content assessment|content assessment]]) that can help me on the way? --[[User:Slgrandson|Slgrandson]] <small>([[User talk:Slgrandson|How's my]] [[Special:Contributions/Slgrandson|egg-throwing coleslaw?]])</small> 02:43, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

== Multigenre glitch in comics - the return of. ==
When a checkuser checks your IP, does it check the IP that you registerd it on, or the IP you have recentley edited it with?(if you changed your IP(not that i'm going to do it)).--[[User:GoldenGlory84|<font color="gold">GoldenGlory84</font>]] [[User Talk:GoldenGlory84|(talk)]] 21:04, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

7 years ago I noticed a glitch on [[Leviathan (2000 AD)]] in the multigenre section where the genres were always prefixed by a comma. Topic [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2017_January_12#Multi-genre_glitch_in_Comic_Book_infobox here] - [[User:David Biddulph|David Biddulph]] suggested that the first genre needed to be "first" not "y" and that fixed it - but none the wiser as to why [[2000 AD (comics)]] didn't need the qualifier and was happy with a "y".
:I don't have checkuser access and don't know details but I think they mostly look at the IP used in recent edits. See [[Wikipedia:CheckUser]] and note [[Wikipedia:Checkuser#IP information retention]]. Many users have a [[dynamic IP address]] which often changes without the user doing something. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 21:52, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
::A CheckuUser is able to see the IP address, and other technical information, from ''all'' actions you take on the wiki - which includes actions such as account creation (a logged action), as well as edits. <small><span style="border:1px solid;background:#00008B">[[User:Chzz|'''<span style="background:#00008B;color:white">&nbsp;Chzz&nbsp;</span>''']][[User talk:Chzz|<span style="color:#00008B;background-color:yellow;">&nbsp;►&nbsp;</span>]]</span></small> 03:48, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Now I've got the same thing on [[The 'Nam]] - but this is even weirder in that the existing revision has a "y" for the first genre, and the preceding comma, but if I change that to "first" then I still get the comma and also the first genre is bunched up without spaces to the second genre.
== Citation Requirements ==

Should this be declared a bug in that the same criteria yields three different results:
Hello All,

#2000AD - fine with "y"
I have never edited Wikipedia before and would like to start doing so. I am not so clear on exactly what is required for a citation. Does information have to come from a specific book/journal/webpage? I recently took the Budweiser brewery tour in St. Louis and would like to update the Budweiser Wikipedia with some information I learned there. #Leviathan - needs "first"
#The 'Nam - doesn't work with either "first" ''or'' "y"

:Additional - I've looked up [[Template:Infobox_comic_book_title#Genre_list]], however all that does is state that "first" should be used - but in practice that's not the case as outlined above. [[User:Chaheel Riens|Chaheel Riens]] ([[User talk:Chaheel Riens|talk]]) 09:10, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
:Additional additional - if I mark "War" as first it fails. If I mark "historical" as first, then it displays as it should. Why is this? [[User:Chaheel Riens|Chaheel Riens]] ([[User talk:Chaheel Riens|talk]]) 09:14, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
::Looking at the source of [[Template:Comics infobox sec/genre]], it looks to me as if it's all coded for individual cases rather than any sort of general logic, so I'm not surprised that there are some individual oddities. I suggest asking at the talk page for either that or the main template you're calling. [[User:ColinFine|ColinFine]] ([[User talk:ColinFine|talk]]) 11:05, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
:::{{ping|Chaheel Riens}} Looking at the template code, all genres are listed in alphabetical order. <code>first</code> is not an option for which genre you want displayed first. It's a required value for the first alphabetical genre of those genres you want listed. That's why <code>|War=first |Historical=y</code> fails. You cannot display War before Historical. The template could have been coded to avoid the need for the caller to specify <code>first</code> but it would require significantly more code with our rather limited template language. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 14:58, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
::::[[2000 AD (comics)]] doesn't need <code>first</code> because one of the genres is <s>Action</s> Adventure and that's always first alphabetically so the template automatically treats it as first. If the template was modified to accept an earlier alphabetical genre then <s><code>Action=first</code></s> <code>Adventure=first</code> would be required when the earlier genre isn't used. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 15:19, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
:::::The parameter is called <code>Adventure</code> but it displays as [[Action (genre)|Action]]/[[Adventure (genre)|adventure]]. According to the template, you cannot have adventure without action. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 15:24, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

My daughter was messing around on wikipedia and entered our home address as a joke (on the wiki entry for Red Panda) at around 20:52 today (July 19, 2011). It was deleted by someone else right away, but our address still shows up on the 'view history' tab of the Red Panda page. Is there anyway that I can delete that 'history' entry? It's a big privacy breech - believe me my daughter WILL NOT be making that mistake again.

:Juliann, I see you are trying to create an article for the Brass Taps at the University of Guelph. First of all you should read [[WP:ORG|Wikipedia’s notability standards for businesses/organizations]]. Wikipedia accepts articles only for subjects that are notable by our standards. If you think the Brass Taps meets our notability standards after reading them, you need to write the article to be ''neutral'' rather than ''promotional''; Wikipedia does not tolerate promotional articles. The drafts on [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Juliannriolo&oldid=440383302 your user page] and on the [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Thereseriolo&oldid=440395633 user page of your alternate account] are hopelessly promotional and would be deleted on sight if they were in article spaces. Think of something that might be written in the ''Toronto Star'', but with footnotes like a research paper. [[WP:V|Verify]] all facts in the article with citations to [[WP:RS|independent reliable sources]]. (Since the Brass Taps is a university activity, the university is not an independent source.)
:On a side issue, I notice that you are using three different accounts, [[User:Juliannriolo]], [[User:Thereseriolo]] and your original account, [[User:Julianntherese]]. This is permitted since you are not using them disruptively. But it makes it difficult to know how to send you a message. == Use magazine's old name? ==

Please advise
For the album pages I'm creating I include album reviews from ''[[Billboard (magazine)|Billboard]]'' magazine that sometimes go back as far as the 1950s. Many years ago the magazine had a couple of variations on its current name. In 1961 and 1962 it was called ''Billboard Music Week'', and before that it used its original title, ''The Billboard''. Since I'm linking one of these names of the magazine in my article to the article for the magazine itself, it seemed like using the exact name that was used at the time of the album review would be acceptable, but I've started wondering if there is a standard for this kind of situation that I'm not aware of. Does anyone know of guidelines that exist for this? Thanks! [[User:Danaphile|Danaphile]] ([[User talk:Danaphile|talk]]) 00:02, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
:I suggest you use a piped link from whatever the name was at the time, to the current article - e.g. <nowiki>''[[Billboard (magazine)|The Billboard]]''</nowiki> == ''[[Billboard (magazine)|The Billboard]]''.
:You should only wiki-link to a term once, within a section ([[WP:REPEATLINK]]). :('''e/c''') I think using the actual title the magazine went by at the time that the source material was written is correct. I don't know of any policy or guideline that directly addresses the issue, but many citation and sourcing polices and guidelines can be distilled to say that we should be precise in our sourcing, providing good enough attribution as to exactly what source was used, such that someone who wants to verify the information themselves can find the source. Providing the exact name of the magazine at the time the source material was published should help in locating the source material for that person, and so it seems the right path. :Hello, Seachange. You seem to be following up a message you posted at [[User talk:Encoded]], so that user will probably answer there. My answer is that you can do that, but you will lose the formatting, and any referencing (and referencing is absolutely the most important part of a Wikipedia article) so it is not a very effective method of creating a Wikipedia article. Images will not go across either - they need to be uploaded and then used in an article in two separate steps, and Wikimedia is very careful about copyright: see [[Help:upload]].
I was instrumental in making of his album as well as co writing tracks and performing harmonica and backing vocals. I also was the one who put the article up in the first place.

Nothing written, published or commissioned by the club will count, and nor will anything based on interviews or press releases, or just having passing mention. You need to find places where people wholly unconnected with the club have chosen, off their own bat, to write about the club in professionally published places like significant newspapers, or books from reputable publishers. If you cannot find any such places, then your club is almost certainly not [[WP:NCORP|notable]], and '''all''' further effort you spend on trying to create a Wikipedia article about it will be time wasted. :Nope, there is a contradiction. This could be because the option to block talk page access was not intentional (this blocking parameter is placed by checking or unchecking a box which can be toggled on or off by accident) or it could have been intentional based on the edits, but the block notice not tailored as an oversight. There are a number of authors who are giving a culturally biased and skewed perspective towards the history of this region. On a factual basis some edits were made to the page with links to other Wikipedia articles as proof to support the historical timeline. Because of a cultural conflict any mention of the original ancestry has been removed by nationalists. Please review this article and draw your own conclusion to what is acceptable. Otherwise there will be a one-sided totalitarian overview of the regions history as told in retrospect, rather than through historical fact.

== Saving user preferences ==
I have identified a possible inaccuracy of fact in an article, which I want to flag-up. I can't edit it because I don't know what it should be - all I can say is that I don't think it is correct as stated and hope that a more knowledgeable person can investigate. How do I do that?
If I describe the specific issue it might make my question clearer:
There is an image 'HMS Amazon (1799) pursuing possible Belle Poule.jpg' which is used in articles 'HMS Amazon (1799)' and 'HMS Belle Poule (1806)' (and maybe others). The title and captions do indeed indicate some doubt about the Belle Poule being a subject in the image but I think the doubt is stronger than that. From the articles (above), both ships were frigates of similar size ca. 38/40 gun, yet only the left-hand vessel, presumably Amazon in pursuit, resembles a frigate - the right-hand vessel, although close inspection indicates three masts, looks much smaller, perhaps a ship-rigged sloop. If so, either the tentative identification of Belle Poule is wrong, or more seriously, the article on that ship is.
So, how do I bring this to the attention of that vast body of knowledgeable people out there who might otherwise not happen upon it themselves but who might be interested in resolving the matter?
Thanks. <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">— Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[Special:Contributions/92.11.187.140|92.11.187.140]] ([[User talk:92.11.187.140|talk]]) 12:30, 20 July 2011 (UTC)</span><!-- Template:Unsigned IP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

::The caption is as used by the holders of the image, the [[National Maritime Museum]] - 'The Frigate Amazon pursuing an unamed French ship (possibly the Belle Poule)' [http://www.nmm.ac.uk/collections/prints/viewPrint.cfm?ID=PAD8878]. The archivists there are experts in their field, and acknowledge that this is only a tentative identification. Unfortunately we don't know what they base this on, and can't know what Pocock intended his drawing to represent, as it looks like this is just a rough preparatory sketch. Possibly he did not know Belle Poule's design when he drew it. The article on Belle Poule is right about her design, the captions on both articles clearly state the NMM's line, that this may only possibly be Belle Poule. I don't think we can embark on a critical interpretation of the image without engaging in [[WP:OR|original research]]. I personally don't think there is anything that needs to be changed. == Article page view is different if logged on. Why? ==
::Not an expert, but in my opinion it's perspective. It ''is'' merely a drawing after all. A date can also be seen clearly at the bottom - 13 March 1806. The date of the capture of ''Belle Poule''.

Hi, I have noticed that any article appears differently, when I am logged onto Wikipedia. If I am not logged on there is a wide margin on the right hand side of the page. When I log on this margin disappears. So, I am editing (and formatting the page, photos, etc.) with no right hand side margin but most users (who are generally not logged on) will see it with the margin. I cannot predict while editing (no margin) what the page will look like with a margin. That makes fitting text around photographs, etc. a bit hit and miss. Editing is thus not WYSIWYG. Is there a reason for this? Is there a way around it without trial-and-error? (In case it is relevant, I am using Chrome). ::The only other ships (beside the frigates HMS ''Amazon'' and ''Belle Poule'') directly involved in the [[Action of 13 March 1806]], were the much larger [[Ship of the line|ships-of-the-line]] HMS ''[[HMS_London_(1766)|London]]'' and the French ''[[French ship Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1795)|Marengo]]'' (the only other French vessel in the engagement). HMS ''Repulse'' and HMS ''Ramilles'' (also ships-of-the-line) joined later but only against ''Marengo''. The ''Amazon'' was the one pursuing ''Belle Poule''. Seeing that all other ships are even unlikelier to be the one depicted in the drawing, the possibility of it being the ''Belle Poule'' is actually quite strong.--&nbsp;'''<span style="font-family:century gothic">[[User:Obsidian Soul|<span style="color:#000">Obsidi<span style="color:#c5c9d2">♠</span>n</span>]]&nbsp;[[User talk:Obsidian Soul|<span style="color:#c5c9d2">Soul</span>]]</span>''' 13:19, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

==Question again: Notability==
I have written an article about [[Lydia Schatz]], which has been suggested for speedy deletion, because she is only notable as a victim. This is true. On the other hand her death received a lot of media attention. Would [[Death of Lydia Schatz]] be an article that could be notable? How could I change this articles name? --[[User:HannahLiberty|HannahLiberty]] ([[User talk:HannahLiberty|talk]]) 08:46, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
:Yes, articles about crimes should usually be about the event, not the person, but this depends on the focus of the reliable sources. See [[WP:CRIME]] and [[WP:SINGLEEVENT]] for more information. After moving, please rewrite the article to focus on the event, make sure you maintain [[WP:NPOV|absolute neutrality]], take note of [[WP:DUE|due and undue weight]], and provide as much [[WP:RS|reliable sources]] as you can. Nevertheless, I believe that the nomination for speedy deletion is incorrect. --&nbsp;'''<span style="font-family:century gothic">[[User:Obsidian Soul|<span style="color:#000">Obsidi<span style="color:#c5c9d2">♠</span>n</span>]]&nbsp;[[User talk:Obsidian Soul|<span style="color:#c5c9d2">Soul</span>]]</span>''' 09:02, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

==Google's crawling of secure.wikimedia.org.==
Searching the English Wikipedia with google for "foo" <http://www.google.com/#q=site:en.wikipedia.org+foo> gives 15&nbsp;200 results, but doing the same search on the secure site <http://www.google.com/#q=site:secure.wikimedia.org+foo> gives only 1 hit. I expected the latter to give many more since it would be for all the languages, and that I'd have to include a "inurl:/en/" like: <http://www.google.com/#q=site%3Asecure.wikimedia.org%20inurl%3A%2Fen%2F%20foo>.

Turns out that <https://secure.wikimedia.org/robots.txt> requests no crawling. Anyone know why, and why there is still 1 hit (searching for anything seems to show only 1 hit). -- [[User:Jeandré du Toit|Jeandré]], 2011-07-21[[User talk:Jeandré du Toit|t]]09:16z

    Institute for Legislative Analysis Deletion[edit]

    Extended content
Good Evening, this is now the second time the Institute for Legislative Analysis page has been deleted.

This isn't the forum for either one of your purposes. Undeletion is requested at this page, and requesting the review of an administrator action is done at WP:AARV. 331dot (talk) 06:37, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, since Institute for Legislative Analysis was deleted after an AfD, the correct place to appeal the deletion is WP:DRV. Victor Schmidt (talk) 08:52, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing mistakes and adding our contribution x[edit]

I was hoping that someone who reads this might be able to help me with some advice and some guidance on how to do, everything properly Thank you Gemineye (Conspirituality) Therealconspirituality (talk) 11:02, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The article wasn't taken over by the current content. The current content was first written in 2020. The article about your group was deleted in 2011 following a discussion, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Conspirituality. – robertsky (talk) 11:50, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for sharing that, I appreciate knowing that. Thank you for taking the time to inform me, it is greatly appreciated 142.183.237.254 (talk) 12:12, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia doesn't really want you to write about yourself. If you are a notable group (see WP:N and/or WP:GNG) then someone will write an article about you. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:42, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The best course of action would be to gather indepth coverage of your organization from reliable and independent sources, then post the request at appropriate section of Wikipedia:Requested articles. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 14:58, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    What looks like hostile editing[edit]

I have been recently working on an article about an ongoing climate protest in Berlin and an editor who I have difficulty with in the past just rolled back some recent edits and removed most of the images I had added. Their commit messages were not especially focused nor helpful. I know from past experience if I engage with said editor, I will get swamped with Wikipedia legalese. If I roll back the edits in good faith and with considered explanations, an edit war will doubtless arise.

Please help – this is likely to be very unpleasant and demotivating going forward.

And I should add that one roll-back happened so fast that the editor concerned would not have had any opportunity to read the source material, let alone make a considered judgement about the suitability and accuracy of that contribution. TIA, RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 16:15, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@RobbieIanMorrison You have taken the correct first step by raising the matter on the page at Talk:Starving for honesty climate hunger strike, Berlin, Germany, as per our usual process. The guidance the other editor is relying on seems to be WP:NOTGALLERY and that we require WP:INDEPENDENT sources. I'm sure that other interested parties will see this Help Desk thread and weigh in with comments on the Talk Page. The place to raise issues about another editor's behaviour is WP:ANI but I would advise against that at present. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:31, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull: Thanks. My preference is for dialog and due process and not escalation. And I understand that editing judgements can vary. But equally, the underpinning debate needs to be factual and reasoned. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 16:40, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One other consideration is that several of the pictures you want to include are your own work, which some may consider to be a conflict of interest if you add too many. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:49, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull: All the images were from me.
I also want to mention briefly that one important passage I added (important in my estimation because it involved the German federal economics minister visiting the protest camp and thus quite remarkable in the current political context) was up for approximately one minute before being rolled back. How can that class as responsible editing? How can anyone check and assess the source and/or understand the merits of that material and then type in a commit message within that timeframe? Exactly how?
I don't find the current circumstances very conducive. but I guess I will just have to persevere. Involvement from experienced and neutral editors would be great, because I don't wish to face this quite possibly deteriorating and time-consuming situation alone. Really. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 17:45, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull: Anyone: I would like a senior Wikipedia editor to restore the Berlin hunger strike article to its state prior with reference to the recent controversial edits. In particular, this contribution covering written content should be reverted: en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Starving_for_honesty_climate_hunger_strike%2C_Berlin%2C_Germany&diff=prev&oldid=1226915490
The related deletion commit message of "keeping it real. we are not the strike's website" is distinctly unhelpful and also pejorative in my view. Please read that earlier diff and its commit message to see what that content was and why it was added. And as discussed earlier and elsewhere, I believe this contribution to be important and relevant.
In addition, the full set of images should be restored so there can be a useful and sensible discussion on which photographs to retain and which not. And that will be a useful exercise which I particularly welcome.
I should add that I normally enjoy working on Wikipedia and value the input of other editors. But occasionally I encounter this style of what one might call "ill‑informed editing‑by‑deletion". And normally accompanied by several aspects: no attempt to rectify issues, no discussions on talk pages, high‑handed commit messages, and an avalanche of Wikipedia policy acronyms when challenged. And ofttimes, there are mistaken assessments regarding core facts and notability which are usually difficult to shift. In this case exactly, the resulting discussion on the talk page did not move beyond vague generalities and omitted issues.
Please, I am asking for help and interest. Editors acting in good faith should be respected and Wikipedia norms and practices followed. And, as I understand it (and although I am male), this form of broadly arbitrary editing‑by‑deletion is particularly difficult for woman editors.
Can we therefore roll back to the earlier positions and then discuss options and rectifications on the talk page? I much prefer modification, improvement, and ultimately deletion to be the starting points and not have to argue for restoration in the face of intransigence. Can we agree on that approach? Can someone make the requisite roll‑backs? Thank you in advance. (And yes I know the editor that I am in conflict with has administrator status.) Augment an article’s list of other languages’ analogues?[edit]

The “languages” drop-down that adorns our article on Gaussian elimination offers the corresponding article on the Wikipedia site of each of 49 other languages. These 49 other languages do not include French. How do I add an entry for French Wikipedia’s (Wikipédia’s) article to that list? PaulTanenbaum (talk) 18:37, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The French article that you provided is already link to a former English Wikipedia article that is currently a redirect to Gaussian elimination. If you want to link the two articles, you'll have to go to the French article's Wikidata page (In this case, here), remove the frwiki entry, then add the French article to the "languages" sidebar of Gaussian elimination. Only do that if you are certain that Gaussian elimination and Gauss-Jordan elimination are the same thing. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 19:19, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help with submitting new article for review[edit]

I created a draft new article. I hit publish but then I cannot submit it for review. It asks me to type the words in the field to check if I am a human. I have typed the words correctly several times but it time it does not recognize this. Then it says I have exceeded the number of attempts. Miamisunshine2024 (talk) 18:52, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You're draft is already on the waitlist for review, maybe the system had an error and did not show you that you've successfully submitted. While you're at it, please remove the external links in the main body of the draft and put them in a separate "external links" section. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 19:02, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    wrong word used in Farsi[edit]

Hi. I work with some Iranian students and the word for "Bronze" is incorrect. You have written the word for "rice" and not "boronzee"... 2607:FEA8:7DE:CB00:2D06:7FC8:4F09:D7AE (talk) 22:41, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Which article are you referring to? The English-language article on bronze says nothing about Farsi terms. If you are referring at an article on the Farsi-language Wikipedia, you (or one of your students) need to discuss it there, as this help desk covers the English-language Wikipedia only. Bronze has an interlanguage link to fa:برنز. According to Google Translate, برنز means bronze. But the poster gives no indication whether it involves any of those pages or that word. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:01, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Are images transfers to WikiData working?[edit]

I use Wiki Shoot Me to take photos for Wikipedia while I’m traveling. Typically you can identify articles that need photos by looking for yellow dots indicating Wikipedia articles and larger red circles near by indicating WikiData items without photos (as previously these seemed to sync). In two cases recently I noticed articles with CC-licensed images placed correctly in the lead and appropriately sized that did not have their photos synced with WikiData: National Hotel and Wet Mountain Valley. I know the page image is being picked up because they display correctly on Special:Nearby using their coordinates: National Hotel and Wet Mountain Valley. It looks like they’re just not making it to WikiData. - Scarpy (talk) 23:19, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is a search box or a magnifying glass search icon at the top of all pages. There is a redirect from Howard's End to Howards End so it works fine to search for "Howard's End". PrimeHunter (talk) 00:43, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Citing an article inside of a meeting report[edit]

Forgive me if this has already been asked, I looked but couldn't find anything. I want to cite a specific article (Acanthoma fissuratum of the outer auditory canal from a hearing aid, page 304) within this collection of abstracts. Redirect-categorization tool?[edit]

During this past month, I've begun to take notice of a new tag filter that detects old-school redirect pages consisting only of "#REDIRECT" and the linked [[page target]]; WP:Categorizing redirects now recommends adding an {{R from X}} tag to avoid the "Uncategorized redirect" message in summaries. Planning to take advantage of this new rule any moment from now; before then, can any editors/developers direct me towards a tool (à la WP:RATER for content assessment) that can help me on the way? --Slgrandson (How's my egg-throwing coleslaw?) 02:43, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Description of the Deleted Content:[edit]

The deleted content was an article titled "The Stealing of Emily - Closed Material Procedures Secret Courts" that I authored. It provided information about a book I wrote, including its title, genre, and a brief summary of its plot.

    Reasons for Reinstatement:[edit]

I believe the deleted content should be reinstated for the following reasons:

    • The article adhered to Wikipedia's content policies and guidelines, including those on notability and verifiability.
    • The book "The Stealing of Emily - Closed Material Procedures Secret Courts" is a notable work in its genre, as evidenced by its positive reception and reviews on reputable platforms such as Goodreads.
    • The deletion may have been based on a misunderstanding or misinterpretation of Wikipedia's guidelines.

    Supporting Evidence or References:[edit]

    Clarity and Conciseness:[edit]

The original article provided a clear and concise overview of the book, including its title, author, genre, and plot summary. It adhered to Wikipedia's guidelines for article structure and content presentation.

    Respectful Tone:[edit]

I respectfully request that the deleted content be reinstated in accordance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. I believe that restoring the article would contribute positively to the Wikipedia community by providing valuable information about a notable literary work.

    Hi @Martinnewbold.
The proper place to request undeletion is at WP:REFUND.
However based on your supporting evidence there is no way your article is suitable for Wikipedia. Only books that meet our notability criteria for books merit a Wikipedia article. Your four sources (Goodreads, your website, Facebook ISBN) do not prove notability in the slightest. Wikipedia is not a repository of book information, but an encyclopaedia of notable topics.
You also shouldn't be writing about a book you wrote in the first place! Please see conflict of interest.
As such I would not waste more of your time on this. Also, please don't use ChatGPT to author requests like this, we want to hear from you, not a robot.

    National Tortellini Day[edit]

I would like to add, on the tortellini page, that the world celebrates National Tortellini Day every year on 13 February, but my work doesn't focus on adding sources and I don't want to make mistakes; the source is this (which I don't know if it's reliable): https://nationaltoday.com/national-tortellini-day/ (information present in the "Giornata Nazionale dei Tortellini" section of the it.wiki page, https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tortellini). JacktheBrown (talk) 06:34, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

At the top of the nationaltoday page you linked, it says "Got an idea for a holiday? Send it to us". If anyone can submit a holiday, then that site is unlikely to be reliable. Information present on another Wikipedia is also not a reliable source. You will need to come up with reliable sources. Shantavira|feed me 08:56, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Shantavira: in what sense "Information present on another Wikipedia is also not a reliable source"? It.wiki isn't reliable? JacktheBrown (talk) 17:20, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown No, it.wiki, like all wikipedias, is not a reliable source. See WP:CIRCULAR which says "Do not use articles from Wikipedia (whether English Wikipedia or Wikipedias in other languages) as sources, since Wikipedia is a user-generated source." CodeTalker (talk) 20:12, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikis are not reliable sources for Wikipedia articles, since they are user-edited. It's the same reason we don't use blogs, Goodreads, or the IMDb for substantial content. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:25, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again, the nationaldaycalendar is just another website, and it invites anyone to "Register A National Day". Shantavira|feed me 19:39, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Multigenre glitch in comics - the return of.[edit]

7 years ago I noticed a glitch on Leviathan (2000 AD) in the multigenre section where the genres were always prefixed by a comma. Topic here - David Biddulph suggested that the first genre needed to be "first" not "y" and that fixed it - but none the wiser as to why 2000 AD (comics) didn't need the qualifier and was happy with a "y".

Now I've got the same thing on The 'Nam - but this is even weirder in that the existing revision has a "y" for the first genre, and the preceding comma, but if I change that to "first" then I still get the comma and also the first genre is bunched up without spaces to the second genre.

Should this be declared a bug in that the same criteria yields three different results:

    1. 2000AD - fine with "y"
    2. Leviathan - needs "first"
    3. The 'Nam - doesn't work with either "first" or "y"

They all use the Infobox comic book title template, so surely behaviour should be the same? Chaheel Riens (talk) 08:00, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Additional - I've looked up Template:Infobox_comic_book_title#Genre_list, however all that does is state that "first" should be used - but in practice that's not the case as outlined above. Chaheel Riens (talk) 09:10, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Additional additional - if I mark "War" as first it fails. If I mark "historical" as first, then it displays as it should. Why is this? Chaheel Riens (talk) 09:14, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the source of Template:Comics infobox sec/genre, it looks to me as if it's all coded for individual cases rather than any sort of general logic, so I'm not surprised that there are some individual oddities. I suggest asking at the talk page for either that or the main template you're calling. ColinFine (talk) 11:05, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Chaheel Riens: Looking at the template code, all genres are listed in alphabetical order. first is not an option for which genre you want displayed first. It's a required value for the first alphabetical genre of those genres you want listed. That's why |War=first |Historical=y fails. You cannot display War before Historical. The template could have been coded to avoid the need for the caller to specify first but it would require significantly more code with our rather limited template language. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:58, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
2000 AD (comics) doesn't need first because one of the genres is Action Adventure and that's always first alphabetically so the template automatically treats it as first. If the template was modified to accept an earlier alphabetical genre then Action=first Adventure=first would be required when the earlier genre isn't used. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:19, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The parameter is called Adventure but it displays as Action/adventure. According to the template, you cannot have adventure without action. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:24, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Aardvark fiction never really took off... Anyway, I have clarified the use of first in the documentation.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 15:55, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Handling mass unsourced edits[edit]

I have encountered an unsourced and seemingly wrong edit on the List of countries by obesity rate (I also made a comment on the talk page Talk:List of countries by obesity rate#Republic of Korea). I've tracked it down to the user Special:Contributions/37.211.172.77 that seems to have made many unsourced, and to my eyes wrong, edits, e.g.:

In this type of case per a personal point of view, I will find ones sources that if it supports two or one of the edits, then they may be true (not confirming that they are). Using Word[edit]

Hi Lew. I seem to have lost you?? Can I simply copy an article I have written using MS Word and paste it straight onto Wiki? Best wishes, Bruce Seachange2000 (talk) 04:09, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Seachange. You seem to be following up a message you posted at User talk:Encoded, so that user will probably answer there. My answer is that you can do that, but you will lose the formatting, and any referencing (and referencing is absolutely the most important part of a Wikipedia article) so it is not a very effective method of creating a Wikipedia article. Images will not go across either - they need to be uploaded and then used in an article in two separate steps, and Wikimedia is very careful about copyright: see Help:upload.
In my experience, editors who attempt the challenging task of creating a new article before they have spent weeks or months learning how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles, usually have a frustrating and miserable experience. Would you enter a major tournament when you've never picked up a tennis racket before?
When you have learnt about core concepts like verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable sources, and most importantly notability, then is the time to read your first article and give it a go.
If you are determined to go ahead with it now, absolutely your first task is to find the reliable, independent sources with substantial material about your club. If you cannot find any such places, then your club is almost certainly not notable, and all further effort you spend on trying to create a Wikipedia article about it will be time wasted. If you meant "uploading images", please see c:COM:First steps/Contributing (Wikimedia Commons) and WP:Uploading images/WP:NFCC (WP). Open-content media is welcome on Commons, while non-free material stays on any Wikipedia allowing it (including this edition). Since you are editing from an IP, you must create an account before submitting media to either venue. --Slgrandson (How's my egg-throwing coleslaw?) 23:32, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Question by Lenutaa mirceaa[edit]

    what îs the www.en.m.wikipediia.org?/4-6-2024/"addtopic" Lenutaa mirceaa (talk) 12:14, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Lenutaa mirceaa Would you mind giving us some context, please. An example might be to tell us what you were attempting when you found www.en.m.wikipediia.org?/4-6-2024/"addtopic". 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 12:51, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Even giving us a valid URL might help. Maproom (talk) 17:51, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Category:Works about children[edit]

I recently came across Category:Works about children, and the articles listed in it directly (as opposed to in subcategories) are an extremely eclectic collection. We have IQ tests for children (Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children), an episode of Star Trek (Miri (Star Trek: The Original Series)), a photograph (Faith and Confidence), etc.

Is this a properly-functioning category? If not, what should be done about it? Walsh90210 (talk) 18:36, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seems "fiction" should be a "top" subcategory. Fwiw, there is a Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:49, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; when I went to the Category_talk page a message said "Talk pages in this namespace are generally not watched by many users. Please consider visiting the Help desk for a more prompt response or reviewing the Categorization FAQ for quick tips." I can post at the WikiProject next time. Saving user preferences[edit]

Hi, I have tried multiple times, but it seems I am unable to disable the setting that allows people to email me because, even after clicking save, my user preferences are not saved. I would really appreciate it if you could help. Urboyspong (talk) 20:47, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It seems you have asked this question at the Teahouse under a different username. Please stick to only one of these two venues to avoid duplication of volunteer effort. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:47, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article page view is different if logged on. Why?[edit]

Thanks TrimmerinWiki (talk) 23:48, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TrimmerinWiki: Wikipedia and most other web sites do not use information about the aspect ratio and font size of the user's window or sub-window: this is left to the browser. You can never build a "WISYWIG" web page, because each user will see it differently. What you can (try to) do is resize your window to see how the page displays with various aspect ratios. -Arch dude (talk) 00:00, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TrimmerinWiki: In addition to the answer from Arch dude, the different view is likely due to the skin. Logged out users get Vector 2022 skin with lots of whitespace and your account may have a different one chosen in the preferences. There are several skins to choose from, so different users will get different views depending on their preference. RudolfRed (talk) 03:25, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Change email account[edit]

I have an older account which I made a lot of updates but haven't used in several years. Now that email connected to it was Yahoo and is now not usable. Can I assign my new email address to my existing account. Username is toneron2 Thank you for your time 134.65.175.36 (talk) 01:53, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

not sure how someone would contact me if I don't have my email address on here 134.65.175.36 (talk) 01:55, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty sure you'd need to be able to log into your account in order to update the email. Otherwise, you're just a random IP asking that the email address tied to a user account be changed. DonIago (talk) 02:01, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Although email is an option, the normal way to contact editors is on their talk page, such as User talk:Toneron2. You can update your email by logging into your account and changing it in preferences. If you cannot remember your account password and your email is not accessable, then there is no way to recover your account. You can create a new account and mention on your user page that you previously edited under the old name. RudolfRed (talk) 03:49, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    File Replacing[edit]

How do you replace a file? I asked this a bit ago but i dont know where my question has gone. 7s3s (talk) 04:39, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@7s3s: Questions are archived periodically to keep the page size from becoming too large. Your question is here. To upload a new version of the file I think you can use the upload wizard c:Special:UploadWizard. If that doesn't work or you have more questions about how to upload files at commons, the help desk there is a better place to ask: c:Commons:Help_desk RudolfRed (talk) 04:48, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@7s3s: Note that you need to have autopatrol right in Commons in order to overwrite an existing file (this is a recent change starting from late last year). MKFI (talk) 07:18, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Link to template is missing in category page[edit]

I notice that for most redirect categories, there is a link to the template itself ("Template:R from...") under the section "Pages in category..." before the alphabetical listing of entries. See "Category:Redirects from short names". But "Category:Redirects from incomplete names" doesn't have it. I'm happy to do it but I see that category pages can't be edited, per se.

PS: I've unlinked the Wikilinks to the categories, because it wasn't working for some reason. Can you not Wikilink to a category page?   — TARDIS builder     ★       09:54, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
