The Wikimedia Toolserver is a cluster of servers operated by Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. It is used to provide hosting and combined access to all the useful tools which were written by different people for the Wikimedia projects. The toolserver offers a replicated database of Wikimedia's projects. Interested programmers should get shell access there to update and care for their scripts.

Servers

Template:Toolserver The cluster is located in Amsterdam and they fulfill various roles:

  • Database Server - These contain replicated copies of each Wikimedia project. They also contain a full text copy of each revision which is in separate compressed storage that is not freely accessible.
  • Web Server - These are what users see when they use any web based tools such as: There also includes a Stable server for more commonly accessed tools.
  • Login Server - These act as shell servers which provide access to users to run bots, scripts, and other queries.

Toolserver reports

As the toolserver constantly replicates the databases that hold details about Wikipedia and the pages between them, Wikipedians with access to the toolserver are ideally placed to query the server and derive customised reports for other Wikipedians on request. The relationships easiest to query are between:

  • pages
  • the categories they are in
  • the external links they have
  • the images or other media they link to.
