If you propose a new logo for a project please add the copyright tag {{CopyrightByWikimedia}} to the image description page. If you are the creator of one of the logos below, please change the copyright on the image description page accordingly..

Policy for new logos

If you propose a logo for one of a Wikimedia project it must not be licensed under GFDL. Copyright should be transfered to the Wikimedia foundation instead. It may be useful to review the Mozilla trademark policies to gain an initial understanding of the problems of trademarks licensed under the GFDL. It is our intention to license the logos in a manner consistent with our values, and a free license on a logo is legally a very baffling thing.

Additionally, don't just change the logo on a project or language without a discussion with (at a minimum) the affected communities and the board. The logo identity of our websites is important for professionalism and consistency, to help end users be familiar with us, and we should be thoughtful about changes.

Finally, there have been a few instances of logos temporarily changed for holidays on some wikis. I (Jimbo) would like to generally discourage this practice, even though I personally find it to be quite fun. The problem is: it is hard to do it well, in a way that doesn't conflict with our neutrality policies. To illustrate what I mean: is a Christmas logo neutral towards religion? If the en.wikipedians voted for a US Flag logo on the 4th of July, would this be neutral? Obviously not. But this sort of consideration will come into play for almost every holiday, and for now, unless and until we find a way to come to consensus about it, this sort of temporary change should be mostly avoided.

Large version suitable for use in printed publications

These large versions are suitable for use in printed publications. The PDF versions are preferred as the text is vectorized and will render correctly at any size and resolution. The PNG versions will work as a substitute where use of the PDF versions is not possible for technical reasons. If you need a large version in your language, contact en:User:Nohat.

The image is bitmapped 3-D rendering, so there is no vector format version of the image available. That means that the logo is not available in SVG, EPS, Illustrator, or any other vector formats.

Localisation

How can I get a version of the Logo for my wikipedia?

  1. First translate the text "Wikipedia / The Free Encylopedia" at the Wikipedia in other languages page
  2. Next grab a copy of the current logo and modify the text using your favourite image-editing software OR ask en:User:Nohat to make it for you (on his talk page on en:), and if you're lucky he'll make it within a couple days using the same font as the English logo. (Hoefler Text italic 13px)
  3. Post the resulting image on Requests for logos
