This page hosts proposals for new projects that are inline with the Wikimedia Foundation goal of spreading and promoting knowledge. Before adding a new proposal, see the new project policy. Please only make proposals on this page if you are willing to take responsibility for it; otherwise, post it on the discussion page.
If you want to propose a new language for an existing project, please do on Requests for new languages. If you want to propose closing an existing project, see Proposals for closing projects. If you are suggesting an enhancement which requires a change to the MediaWiki software, please file a feature request in MediaZilla. If you have a proposal for any other type of enhancement to an existing project, please visit that project and attempt to gather interest there.
Information
Notes to consider
- Hosting: Remember that the Wikimedia Foundation is not a free hosting company for any kind of wikis. If your project does not fit the Foundation's ideals, try a wiki hosting site such as Wikia, ScribbleWiki or wikidev.net (see a list of wiki hosts with reviews), or download and host MediaWiki yourself.
- History: Individuals attempting to create a new project may benefit from reading the Wikipedia timeline and Uses of a wiki.
Be persistent. Don't take criticism directed at proposals personally. There have been a number of mistakes made in the past in regards to starting up new project ideas, and several of the "veteran" users are afraid of repeating those same mistakes. New ideas are taken seriously, although it should be admitted that the process of going from an idea for a new project to actually turning on a server that is implementing that idea will take quite a bit of time and effort. If you are proposing these ideas, be willing to take some "arrows" in your back, a lot of criticism, cynicism, and outright disbelief that your ideas are going to work. If it really is a good idea, there will be others who will be willing to help you out as well. Be persistent and don't give up right away.
The last major project that made the jump from a project idea to something going on its own was Wikiversity. Some veteran users are suggesting that it will be a year or two before any other project idea will be accepted as a new separate project, if ever. If you want to see how a project idea has been successful, it would be wise to see what was done to go from idea to an actual project, please look at the project proposal page for Wikiversity. In particular, click on the history button and look back in time over some of the complications they went through before going "live". Any projects that don't live up to this sort of standard for coming into existance will likely not be considered as a new project by the Wikimedia Foundation's Board. Don't get discouraged, but it is not going to be easy either.
If you see something that doesn't fit into any current Wikimedia project, could be done using MediaWiki software, can be distributed using the GFDL (or very similar license) for republishing, please feel free to add a suggestion below.
It has been suggested that many of the current proposals could be merged into one of the main projects below.
- Wikipedia: One other place to strongly consider is Wikipedia's series of subprojects, WikiProject. Many of the proposals listed below could be incorporated into one of those projects, or perhaps a new WikiProject could be started instead. Wikipedia is evolving and changing over time, and there is already quite a bit that can be adapted from the content on Wikipedia, not to mention involving people who commonly use and edit Wikipedia.
- Wikisource: Wikisource also has a similar effort for larger subprojects of Wikisource that are focused on original source material that will require quite a bit of effort to transfer to that project. This would be things like historical dictionaries, encyclopedias, or other multi-volume reference works that are of a historical nature and can be copied according to the terms of the GFDL.
- Wikibooks: In addition, it has been suggested on many of the proposals listed below that a good place to look would be with Wikibooks. If you are trying to put together a large collection of factual information into one place, starting a Wikibook may be a good place to go. If it doesn't quite fit Wikibooks, the other editors at Wikibooks will try to help you get to the correct place as well.

- I would like to make a comment. I am a kid, and Simple English Wikipedia is simple enough for kids in my estimation. We also have wikijunior. To me, I also don't see it as good for the children's accounts to have less priveliges (sp?) because kids have the ability to do the same things adults do, like run their own wiki (that is mine). The encyclopædia should have no one below, no one above. Ionas68224 06:54, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Simple english WP only exists in english (yes !) They were no other simple language wikipedia opened after it. On the "demo" site in french, children don't have less privileges, the younger just are less likely to become sysop, that's all. Astirmays 18:59, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- Simple English wikipedia is not necessarily for children, but for none native speakers of English. Redrocketboy 15:53, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Wikitainment Guides
- Working Demo
- http://www.pop-cult.org/Wikitainment/
(it will eventually become www.wikitainment.com) - Link to request on mailing list
- http://mail.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l (HELP, please!!)
- Naming suggestions
- Wikitainment Guide, Wikitainment, the Pop-cult Guides
- Domain name
- http://www.wikitainment.com (state of registration)
- Scope
- A wiki designed to focus on all contemporary entertainment fiction in different media. Closely tied with Wikipedia, it will contain all the pop cult info about characters, episodes, series, comic book issues, movies, singers, bands, labels and videogames that is often labeled as "un-encyclopedic" by deletionist Wikipedia editors.
- Wikipedia could move the information there. This would save a great deal of edit conflicts between Deletionist and inclusionist editors.
- It will be divided in 7 or more classifications:
- Video Games
- Television
- Movies
- Comics
- Music
- Radio
- Toys
- Sports
- People
- Technology
- Fashion
- Books
Another possibility is instead of creating a whole new wiki, creating this wiki within Wikipedia as a siamese twin sister project of Wikipedia, or a sub-wiki.

- No! A big, flat out no. Wikimedia Foundation are for free knowledge, not polls. I don't see how "anyone can edit" is special for a thing like polls. Also, a true democracy does not "vote on consensus". Ionas68224 07:00, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

- JJohnson1701 - definitely. Something where we can pull up a map of, say, England, and click on the language links to see the names in foreign languages, and click on that language's article on that city, village, or whatever. That'd be awesome. Perhaps it would need a list of the places, perhaps in system messages, and then a translation as well.
- JosN A Wikiatlas exists on Commons already. That could be transferred to a new Wikiearth, Wikiatlas or whatever. A atlas with a lot of information does not seem logical to me for Commons, so, a new wiki would be preffered, I guess.
- User:WikiEarth I really like the idea of having a wiki atlas, even before I saw this proposal. I made my own wiki called wikiearth if you want to check it out.

- I was going to say the same thing, but was waiting for the proposal page to get created. In a very prominent case a few years ago, the wildly popular lyrics.ch was offering a rather complete database of lyrics for free, ran into legal trouble from many prominent artists and labels, and was forced to change the site significantly, to the point that it was barely usable. It eventually went under and is completely dead now. 18:15, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

- I would like to mention that this is a perennial suggestion to have some project related to the formation and distribution of musical content, with suggestions to have different markup systems within the MediaWiki software and to even be able to edit MIDI files or musical scores. There certainly are some interesting things that could be done with music in a collaborative fashion, and this particular project should not be completely dismissed. --Roberth 17:56, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- (In response to Pcu123456789) This should not be part of Wikisource. When people think of a library, they generally think of books, not sheet music. Putting this at Wikisource would cause it to be neglected. This should be it's own project. Galanskov 21:51, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, my public library has a whole wing filled with sheet music, scores and scripts. Perfectly reasonable contents for a source repository, although it is probably true that having this as a separate project would probably guarantee more traffic and more care.--starfarmer*comm 10:34, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- Although it is going in a slightly different direction, you might want to take a look at [4] Topic is "Facebook choir/band/something like" in the Facebook group "Join this if you've played music with someone in it..." The group of ~35,000 members is looking into ways to collaboratively record (and potentially write) music. I think it could be tremendous if someone familiar with how to organize such a project got in touch with this group! Cmadler 16:31, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

- IMSLP is a wiki based on the free sheet music on the internet with tremendous coverage, having extremely obscure pieces and most if not all of the main composers' works. The subject is not narrow, in my opinion, but many people could not participate without knowledge of notation or composition. Alton 04:18, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

- WikiCurriculum
- Domain name
- not available yet (state of registration)
- Scope
- A semantic framework for the development of flexible curricula and texts, in high-school mathematics (Algebra I - Precalculus) to begin with. It will be structured around three core concepts: blocks, facets, and threads. A block will be a unit of mathematical or pedagogical material (such as solving systems of linear equations). A facet will be a way in which to view the material (for the student, teacher, professional developer, mathematician, math historian, curriculum-developer, etc...). A thread will be a collection of blocks, linked with a purpose in mind, such as a coherent Algebra I curriculum, or a mathematically rigorous development of plane Geometry, or a short course for middle-school teachers.
Using semantic data (RDF triples), not only will the mathematical content be available, but also there will be information about which mathematical material must be understood before which other material (pedagogical dependency), as well as logical/mathematical dependency, and which problems assess/require which concepts. In addition, semantic data would encode which blocks correspond to NCTM (national) U.S. standards and state (California, Texas, Massachusetts, for example) standards. Standards from other countries will also be added.
In this way, a school district can build a curriculum, and perhaps a textbook, by snapping together blocks, ensuring all standards are satisfied, and ensuring that the material is presented in a pedagogically sound way. Or, for example, a teacher educator can build a curriculum for a short professional development course. Or, for example, a homeschooling parent can develop a sound curriculum for their child.

WikiTrivia is a proposed offshoot of Wikipedia. WikiTrivia pages will be made up of lists of trivia items collected regarding any and all topics.
This project is a response to the perceived negative impact of trivia lists in Wikipedia articles (see Wikipedia's Trivia guideline). WikiTrivia would serve as a place where Trivia sections in Wikipedia articles could be moved and retained, for those who are interested in reading and maintaining them, while no longer hindering Wikipedia's efforts to remain encyclopedic in article quality.

Each book will get an article with such information as author, publisher, year of publishing, ISBN. And of course, each article will have categories (by book's language, by topic..). It will be very useful for any researcher.

WikiBrain

- WikiBrain
- Scope
- This would basically be like Wikipedia- a communal brain, a pool of knowledge and wisdom- but this Wiki would be a place for all that knowledge and wisdom that's a.) not good enough for Wikipedia ('List of Pickup Lines') and b.) not verifiable enough for Wikipedia; it would contain opinions often (not the same as Wikiopinions proposed above), and debatable material, so users of this site would have to be able to not freak out about biased knowledge/wisdom.

- Many Pharmaceuticals are already listed quite extensively in wikipedia.
However, so are many words and species, yet these have been granted their own projects. I think a wikiPDR-type community would be very convenient, especially since the online PDR is not available for free to the general public or researchers. I am a graduate student of pharmacology, but the online version of the definitive text of pharmacology is restricted only to one branch of the science-medical-research community. If interested, this could also be incoroporated into the Medical Dictionary mentioned above, however I think it would be best to keep the drug information in a wiki of it's own.

- I think this is a great idea. I'm guessing the format would be a hierarchal tree of all knowledge in a similar way Wikispecies has been set up. I found an interesting article on the topic here. Though, I’m not sure that ontology is the correct terminology. Epistemology is probably closer to the ojective. Though, even that is not the accurate term. But wikiepistemology? Yuk! Someone with more knowledge on the matter would probably come up with a good name. I think it's only a matter of time when this needs to be done as the Dewey Decimal System dosn't quite cut it anymore when wikipedia itself is managing over 1.5 million articles. – E! WikiMobile
I propose that a Mobile Wiki page be created for each Wiki page. This function would allows users to select a summary of text for users on the go (like mobiles) or using devices with limited screen space. Main reason why this would be more sucessful then google: Users on Cellphones (mobiles) generally are paying for Internet data traffic, slow connection and limited small screen to sift through wanted info. A google search would most likely turn a lot of unwanted websites that don't address info that user is specifically looking for and not in a mobile friendly format. If a WikiMobile search was put in place all mobile search requests would be easy to access and a super convenient tool to have on the fly.
If there is any interest, I can elaborate on ideas on how to implement this most effectively.

Since I'm not the proposer I'm not going to change the stated scope. But here is my suggestion, which I am sharing with other wikichemists:
- Database of all significant chemicals (i.e. commercially available, including fine chemicals)
- Experimental details - microscale and macroscale synthesis, real-life spectra (opposed to that generated by prediction software)
- Compound classes
- Reactions
- Lab technique and good laboratory practices
- Laboratory equipment, including:
- operation

- Analytical tools
- sample preparation

It may be more appropriate to discuss these details here than in wikipedia, which is more appropriate for the lay audience. --Rifleman 82 14:03, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

I know that there are already existing projects or proposals looking close to this proposal :
- Proposals_for_new_projects#WikiTravel : unfortunately not dealing with the way of life (for people that would migrate or live for a certain time into the country) ;
- [9] not GFDL'd and not run by The Wikipedia Foundation (User:Roberth and User:Rschen7754) : Is this a problem ?. Nevertheless, I never found it before coming on Wikimedia (that's an issue). Moreover, most of the articles have a lack of data relating the cost of life, the examples of prices (as well for travalers - tips, stamps, tickets, etc - , as for living in - 1l of milk, furnitures for babies, benzine, food; housiing, etc.
To summarise : this proposal focuses on pratical issues and may refer to misc. projects or international sources as necessary.

Wikibin as in - WikiRecycle
For any article/page/discussion/and so forth that is not vandalism, slander libel, spam, or a copyright violation that would otherwise be deleted, instead of deletion, the good faith contribution is moved to this wiki and stored for reference or later use. Currently, only admins can view deleted articles. It seems that as long as there was nothing illegal or bad faith about the article, there is no reason others should not be able to use it or fork it.

- This exists at wikiasite:annex.
- It is run by Wikia, not Wikimedia, it does not actually seem to have the scope of every article that has gained the consensus of delete on AfD and other equivalent areas on other Wikimedia projects (the site, Annex reads, "Wikipedia fiction and fiction-related articles that are too detailed, minor, or trivial for Wikipedia can be kept until they find a new home"), and it certainly doesn't seem to be standard practice to transwiki to be deleted articles there.
Might this be appropriate for Wikiincubator?

- Knowing what people and organizations want and need would seem to qualify as knowledge; so in that way it seems this project may not be outside the scope of the Wikimedia Foundation's vision ("a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge") and I know of no current project that this sort of content would be appropriate.

- Well, We all know w:en:Texperts and AQA. These companies respond to SMS questions from the UK via a shortcode. So you text in your question, and you get back an answer in 160 characters. "Who is Bill Gates", or "What is turkey stuffing made of", or "What's the date for easter this year". A similar (perhaps commercial too) wiki can be made, where articles are limited to 1 text (160 characters), or maybe two, such that a person can text in their question ("Bill Gates?", "Turkey Stuffing?", "Easter 2008?") to WikiSMS, and would get the answer immediately. The answers will be set by the community, it will be less work than existing projects, and we already have millions of articles which can be used to extract info from to fit into one SMS. Something to think about !! and dont forget me when you start making millions with this idea wikimedia foundation !!! ;).

Wikipedia Offline Client
Would it be possible to create a client that downloads wikipedia articles for offline viewing? That way, wikipedia could be used like an offline encyclopedia, which would be useful on laptops.
Since wikipedia is constantly being changed, somesort of update service would be needed to fetch new articles and update cached articles. Since wikipedia logs all changes to articles, the update service would be able to simply apply changes, without redownloading the entire article, saving bandwidth. Each client could also be limited to quota, or downloading could be more manual than automatic, meaning the user would have to browse through categories, and select the ones they want to download. Since images would use the most bandwidth, the update service could be limited to thumbnails, and download full size images when requested upon connection to the internet (or be placed in queue for when a connection is made). And to save further bandwidth, the client could be distributed via bittorrent, in several versions; one that consists of just the client, one that comes preloaded with various articles, and one that comes with the entire wikipedia database (which I imagine would be several dozen gigabytes).
When viewing pages, they could integrate into the client. Links could be available on a right pane, or in a top menu bar. An indexing service, available through the update service, could be used to quickly search the entire wikipedia database offline. Articles not cached could appear greyed out. Umm, okay, my ideas are endless...
Anyway, I'd be grateful if the guys at Wikipedia would code such a client =P
