Statement of Purpose

Wikimedia Australia is an independent, not-for-profit organisation, whose purpose is to ensure:

  • growth in the public awareness, support and participation in the projects hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF).
  • equality of opportunity to access and to participate in the collaborative creation of Free Cultural Works, especially educational works, created and developed though online wiki systems.
  • the availability and development of Free Cultural Works about Australia, its culture, natural environment, and Australian news and media.
  • the continued development of relevant open source software systems, such as the MediaWiki software, by participating in conferences and providing scholarships.
  • that members, through educational and social events, can work towards Wikimedia Australia's goals.

Wikimedia Australia is recognised by the WMF as a 'Chapter' and as such will offer the Australian Wikimedia community an official voice in the global Wikimedia community, whose aim is to create unencumbered resources for use throughout the world.

Free Cultural Works are those which can be freely studied, applied, copied and/or modified, by anyone, for any purpose.[1]

A wiki is a software system accessible via the Internet which lets users both access and modify content easily, thus enabling the collaborative creation of such content.

Wikimedia Foundation, Inc is a non-profit organisation incorporated in the State of Florida, USA). The projects hosted by it include Wikipedia and Wiktionary and are listed in full on the official site www.wikimedia.org.

MediaWiki is open source software which makes it possible to run a wiki web site such as Wikipedia.
