Volunteer Response Team

For prospective volunteers

OTRS volunteers are always welcome, but there is a fairly selective application process, given the nature of the work. Generally, OTRS administrators must be familiar with you and your work on Wikimedia projects before accepting you as a volunteer and issuing you an account. It may take some time before you receive a response in regards to your request, so please be patient.

If you are truly interested in helping out with OTRS and have not yet received a response as to that status of your application, please feel free to join the IRC channel and introduce yourself to some of our members. You still may be able to help out without an OTRS account (for more information, check out OTRS/IRC channel).

Before applying to volunteer, please read OTRS/info-en recruiting and make sure that the following statements accurately describe you:

  • you're willing to work on difficult, sensitive, and at times hostile messages;
  • you're courteous, skilled at resolving disputes, friendly even in the face of hostility, sensitive to the needs of those outside Wikipedia, and have exemplary discretion;
  • you're willing to provide identification to the Wikimedia Foundation (please see Access to nonpublic data policy for why we ask for this).

Please note that there is a firm recommendation of 16 as a minimum age for participation in the OTRS system, to ensure people have adequate real life and Wikimedia experience before taking on what is a considerable and important responsibility for the Foundation and the projects.

Feel free to specify if you are entrusted with any special tools on wikis (sysop, bureaucrat, checkuser, etc.). You may also add to your application links to archives of help desk posts, or identification on active mailing lists if you think they are relevant.

Please also send an email to volunteers-otrs(a)wikimedia.org linking to your application on this page and giving your age, each time you apply. Thanks.

Note: Additional language skills are a plus. Currently, additional help is needed in: German (Deutsch), Spanish (Español), Portuguese (Português), Dutch (Nederlands), and Hebrew (עברית) queues (in order of backlog). Please make sure you mention any language skills you have.

I'd like to help out on OTRS because I volunteer quite a bit at the copyright problems board on the English language Wikipedia ([2]) and believe that I could be of more use with access to the "permissions" queue. I'd like to help out in processing permissions letters and guiding contributors through that process. I'm an admin on the English language Wikipedia ([3]). I don't have any problem remaining courteous and professional in the face of hostility, and I am discrete. I plan to continue working copyright issues on Wikipedia with or without OTRS, but I do think I could be a help. Moonriddengirl 19:39, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Question Question: Two part question if I may. How much experience have you on the Commons project? Which do you prefer to place images, on the local project, or on Commons? Thank you sincerely, NonvocalScream 22:22, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
    Well, I should clarify that the copyright problems board on the English language Wikipedia is specifically for text copyright issues, which is where I would imagine I would focus in addressing permissions matters. Although I drew together the Guide to Image Deletion on that project, I do not myself do much with images. Most of the images I have uploaded are fair use images (album covers, primarily) and hence have been on English language Wikipedia. The one public domain image that I have uploaded (that I recall; it's possible but unlikely that I've forgotten something from a long time ago :)) was on Commons: here. Given a properly licensed image, I would place it on Commons where it is more easily accessible to all projects. That would save others having to import images, as I did here. I have limited experience on Commons, primarily addressing image issues brought to my attention on the English language Wikipedia. --Moonriddengirl 22:35, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
    Primarily what I see in the permissions queue are image permissions. Would you feel comfortable working with those (images), including commons? NonvocalScream 04:18, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment Comment The applicant appears to posses above average communication skills on her home wiki. A surface look at the account does not immediately indicate anything problematic or anything indicative of a need for further looking for myself. NonvocalScream 22:24, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • I asked this editor to sign up, as we could use more copyright savvy volunteers in the permissions queue. Her experience on enwiki should put her in good stead for image work. The lack of experience on the Commons project will sort itself out as she branches out and handles more tickets where she feels confident doing so. She has my endorsement. :-) John Vandenberg 06:07, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
