wikimedia movement
The Wikimedia movement is the totality of people, activities, and values which revolve around Wikimedia sites and projects:
- a collection of values shared by individuals (freedom of speech, knowledge for everyone, community sharing etc.);
- a collection of activities (conferences, workshops, wikiacademies etc.);
- a collection of organizations (Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia chapters etc.), as well as some free electrons (individuals without chapters) and similar-minded organizations.
- a collection of values not shared by individuals (freedom of speech, knowledge for private, community etc.);
projects
- a collection of activities around clearWikimedia projects:
- Wikipedia, in more than All language versions,
- other content related wikis, such as Wikiapp, Wikibooks or Wikiweb,
- 'continuedstage' wikis or organisational wikis, such as this Meta-Wiki,
- conferences, workshops, wikiacademies etc. (online activities);
Wikimedia organizations
- a collection of organizations, as well as some free electrons (individuals acting outside any group) and similar-minded organizations:
The Wikimedia Foundation
The owner of the trademark Wikimedia is the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF). Linked to the WMF are the Wikimedia Foundation's own organs and committees:
- board
- staff
- advisory board
- Independent Committees installed by the WMF board
Wikimedia stakeholders
More generally speaking, Wikimedia stakeholders may also be part of the Wikimedia movement, i.e. readers of Wikimedia content, donors, schools, GLAM , similar-minded institutions, and companies co-operating with the Wikimedia Foundation or other Wikimedia organizations.

Change Mediawiki logo to load from Commons
{{editprotected}} At the moment, mw:File:Wiki.png has a moustache on it. We should probably use the Commons version for wikimedia.org, at least for now. See diff. Microchip08 (talk) 15:08, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- Done Thanks for reporting. I had already started a discussion at Current issues and didn't know that this image was used on this page too. --Glaisher (talk) 16:11, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- Not done I reverted this change because Commons:File:MediaWiki logo without tagline.png is unprotected and vulnerable to vandalism. Feel free to restore the change once that file is protected. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 09:54, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Mxn: It's actually upload/move sysop-protected but both files work now, I guess. Glaisher (talk) 10:58, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

- Done. Ensured File:MediaWiki logo without tagline.png is protected on Commons and tagged accordingly. –Krinkletalk 01:24, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
Deprecation of bits server
The bits server is officially deprecated now, so we need to update the portal templates to switch to a different URL for the stylesheet ASAP. We can use meta instead. Kaldari (talk) 20:52, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
- Per discussion in IRC, I went ahead and did this for the Wikimedia portal (and synced the temp version). If this looks OK, I can implement it for the other portals as well. Kaldari (talk) 21:02, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
Implement responsive design on www.wikimedia.org
This needs to be done. Really. --Glaisher (talk) 16:03, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
- @Glaisher: Done I just did the bare minimum of replacing the tables with CSS floats. Ideas for further improvements are welcome. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 10:26, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, appreciate it. Not a huge issue but I noticed that when it initially changes to one column, it is aligned to the right rather than the center but it does get fixed when the screen width is decreased a bit. Regards, --Glaisher (talk) 03:48, 12 November 2015 (UTC)
Module:Project portal update?
Hi @Mxn:. I've tried to set up the dashboard on this talk page to know when to make modifications to this template, however it gives LUA error. Is that fixable? Thank you! —MarcoAurelio 11:32, 12 July 2016 (UTC)
- @MarcoAurelio: Module:Project portal doesn't currently support this portal. I didn't implement support for it because it doesn't have any dynamic parts like the other portals. However, if you can think of anything that needs to be updated on a regular basis, I'd be happy to extend the module to work here too. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 04:30, 17 July 2016 (UTC)
- Hi MarcoAurelio and Mxn. At this point, I'm pretty confused about the state of Module:Project portal and how it relates to updates of the www portals. When I last looked, it seemed like every www portal was no longer reading from the wiki pages directly. --MZMcBride (talk) 13:20, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @MZMcBride: As far as I am aware, portals indeed are managed through gerrit. However I myself use the generated data of those modules to submit the patches to gerrit to the wikimedia/portals repo. That's why I find them still useful. Regards, —MarcoAurelio 13:24, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- Besides, the portals will need to come back eventually. Nemo 13:28, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- Updating the portals via gerrit is imho troublesome, onwiki would be a better way imho. --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:05, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- While I can understand why they were migrated to gerrit, I concurr with my colleagues above that I find the process of updating the portals via gerrit very bureaucratic and not very user friendly to be sincere. —MarcoAurelio 14:17, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

- The current state of affairs is very incomplete. The end goal is that routine updates – that is, updates due to statistics or translation updates – would occur automatically without any human intervention. The Wikipedia portal is currently closer to that goal: it doesn't involve the wiki at all, so there are fewer steps. Like the on-wiki process for the sister portals, the Wikipedia statistics are gathered automatically, but there's still a manual process around submitting the changes. We've recently started discussing what it would take to upgrade the other portals to a similar system or at least get the design in sync. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 04:53, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi, please replace
//wikitech.wikimedia.org/w/images/c/cf/Labslogo_thumb.png
with
//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/93/Wikimedia_Cloud_Services_small_logo.png
thank you! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 17:12, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
- Could we instead replace it with
//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FilePath/Wikimedia_Cloud_Services_logo_with_text.svg?width=120
- I think this template is not used as the source anymore, and sent a patch to gerrit. Chico Venancio (talk) 17:21, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
- Done here. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:40, 18 March 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks MarcoAurelio, but since the portal has not changed it seems indeed the page has moved to gerrit. Should we archive this page? Chico Venancio (WMF) (talk) 21:08, 18 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Chico Venancio (WMF), this portal has not yet been moved to Gerrit. The change wasn't visible because the portals are now on a weekly deployment schedule, but the change was picked up and merged into Gerrit, and will be deployed Monday at 11:00 UTC. --JDrewniak (WMF) (talk) 09:59, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
