Development on WikiTeX has been on-going since 2003, and was primarily a means to bring w:LaTeX objects such as chess, music, math into Wiki; we've since expanded, however, and now support w:Lilypond, w:Graphviz and w:Gnuplot. w:TIPA has been added; as well as go, chemistry, Feynman diagrams and even Tengwar.

The long-term strategy of WikiTeX is incorporation into the Zend engine, so as to allow the direct invocation of WikiTeX from within w:PHP; or even as an w:Apache HTTP Server handler, so as to immediately translate markup.

WikiTeX has been ported from PHP to C for that very purpose.
