Join us in exploring how AI is shaping the future of Open Culture!!

AvoinGLAM invites Open Culture advocates and creators of the open ecosystem to join the Finnish GLAM s (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums), research projects and companies to envision the future of Open Culture in the age of AI. The event takes place in Helsinki 6–7 May right after the Wikimedia hackathon in Tallinn 3–5 May. The two-day event will hear inspire talks from participants, explore common themes and work on them in workshops on the second day.

We wish to invite a diverse mix of technology developers, heritage experts, policy advocates and makers from the open ecosystem, memory institutions, academia, and the tech industry. With a maximum capacity of 100 participants, we aim to ensure equal representation across all groups. Everyone is important, and we thank you for making sure you'll be there!

Unfortunately, we're unable to provide grants for accommodation or travel, and our ability to cover meals and sauna relies on sponsorship. The event is free of charge, and we appreciate your understanding of these limitations.

Monday 6 May: Getting inspired

Inspire talks

10:30–12:30 Inspire talks in the morning kick off the event in the old reading room at the National Archives of Finland.

Workshop

14:00–18:00 In the afternoon we continue at the National Archives of Finland and generate ideas and scenarios for encountering future developments of AI and ideate activities for the next day.

Sauna and sea pool

18:00–21:00 The working day is followed by sauna, sea pool, bites and mingling at Allas Sea Pool.

Tuesday 7 May: Hack day

Hands-on working

The second day takes place at the URBAN3 space at Maria01. It is a playground for exploring the intersection of GLAM + Commons + AI. The participants may propose projects at the Project ideas page already and up until the hack day.

We are using the term hacking, which is usually used to talk about a coding event. However, the activity does not need to be technical. It can be small or big, well-planned or ad-hoc. It could be be testing, talking, learning, hacking, whichever is the best way for anyone to get a better understanding how AI works with cultural heritage collections.

Introducing the event

Threat or opportunity?

We have prepared a Miro board for joining the discussion before the event. It is based on three simple steps.

Add a threat or an opportunity that AI creates in the sphere of cultural heritage.
Add a counter argument for any of the existing arguments.
Think of a project, app or activity that would tackle that question. This might become a project to work on at the event!
