Wikimania 2005 media competition

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
This is an archived version of this page, as edited by Sannse (talk | contribs) at 12:39, 7 January 2005 (→‎Photography: your own work of course). It may differ significantly from the current version.

sannse and Sj are planning a media competition to be held at Wikimania in August. This page is a start to considering what we need to arrange for this.

Photography

There will be four main categories: "nature", "people", "places" and "objects". There will also be an extra category for images taken at, or on the way to, the conference.

  • Images can be entered for one category only.
  • Images must be your own work
  • Images should be suitable for use on one or more Wikimedia projects (not Commons alone)
  • Images must be licensed under the GFDL, dual licensed, or released into the public domain.
  • Entries should be mailed to sannse at ###.
  • The closing date for entries for categories 1 to 4 is ### (a week or so before Wikimania). Entries for category 5 must be complete by ### (probably about day two of the conference)
  • Entry size? Should be suitable for printing at ##
  • Images may be digitally manipulated to improve any aspect, but should remain a true and accurate representation of the subject.

Judging

There are two possible paths here. We could have a "featured images" style competition where all contributors are eligible to vote for the best images, or we could choose a panel to judge at Wikimania.

Sponsorship

What sort of sponsorship is acceptable? It would be good to have reasonable prizes for this.

Subject suggestions

1. Nature

A specific insect, plant, animal etc. or a more general image of natural phenomena. Subjects must be accurately identified in order to make them fully suitable for the projects (i.e. "insect" is not sufficient, which species is it?)

2. People

This can be a specific person mentioned on the projects, or a more general illustration of a person (for example doing a prticular job or of a particular nationality).

3. Places

This includes landmarks from particular places as well as more general images.

4. Objects

Something of a catch-all category. Might include an illustration of a recipie for Wikibooks, a household item for an article on Wikipedia, and so on.

5. Wikimania

Photos for this category should be taken at, or on the way to, Wikimania. Facillities for uploading, processing and printing images will be provided (I hope).
