WikiLanguage possibilities?

I noticed that there are seperate sections in the wikibooks site for languages. I was wondering, as an extension of WikiDictionary and WikiBooks, could there be a wiki translation site? I don't mean as in Babelfish, but a literal dictionary with a standardized index of words. If so, would it be possible to have a seperate wikiLanguage site, dedicated to the instruction and comprehension of human language?--Ignatiusantioch 04:06, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New Wikimedia projects are only launched after extensive discussion by the community and the Board. If you would like this project to be part of Wikimedia, please see the information on project creation at Proposals for new projects where you will find instructions on how to propose a new project. However, please make sure your proposal is not too similar to existing projects such as the Wikipedia sister site Wiktionary and one of its competitors, OmegaWiki. Thank you for your suggestion. No section edits on this page

(puttingsplitting this into a new section. Why can I post a new section here, but I can't edit an old one to add a reply?) 84.129.172.45 15:39, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You should be able to edit the old one by using the "edit" link next to the section header. Cbrown1023 talk 15:43, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That much I knew, but there are no edit links!
Ah, I see, the "Submit a new comment" link takes you to a sub-page (Wikimedia site feedback/main) which is still editable, so creating a new section works. But when I come back to Wikimedia site feedback I'm left without section edit buttons, because that page is locked. Only when I reload the Wikimedia site feedback/main link indirectly I can edit. It isn't really supposed to work like this, is it? 84.129.172.45 16:18, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps the database was locked for routine maintenance (it happens on occasion, and usually lasts about three to four minutes). You should see "[ edit ]" to the right of the headings (such as the one for this section) that allows you to edit just that section. EVula // talk // // 21:05, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
EVula, test it while logged out. He doesn't see the section edit links because that page is fully-protected so that people do not add questions/comments to that page. They're supposed to add them to the subpages. Cbrown1023 talk 21:32, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly, none of the headings at Wikimedia site feedback have edit links. I doubt it's a temporary problem. I still have to go to my browser history and load the Wikimedia site feedback/main page to get the section buttons (from there all works dandy as you can see)
There's just the "View source" button at the top of the parent page telling that "This page has been locked to prevent editing." - Guess that having one locked main page and one editable sub-page doesn't mix well when it comes to editing sections.
I didn't even know there's a sub-page until I started rooting around for the reason why creating a section did work but editing a section did not. Safe to assume the average visitor just gives up. Besides, why should visitors not be able to edit a page called "feedback" in the first place? 84.129.172.45 22:07, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As for the section edits, I see two options: (clearly #1 makes the most sense)

1) Unlock the parent page, so that the edit buttons carry over from the sub-page again and are not suppressed by the page lock. (I know these kind of sub-paged sections work fine elsewhere on Wikipedia.) or

2) Reduce the parent page to a mere pointer to the actual forum page on which users are supposed to edit. It makes no sense to have the feedback page display its sub-page but give no reasonable means to reach these sections for editing. (A simple notice saying "don't come here, this page's locked, go to another page" would also do, but that's kinda defeats the purpose of leading visitors to the first page.) 84.129.179.210 12:02, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comments should be directly left in the main page (Wikimedia site feedback). The instructions in Wikimedia site feedback could be moved to a subpage (e.g. Wikimedia site feedback/header), but the main page should remain accessible to the visitors. Korg 15:40, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you all for your help in improving the system, I have implemented the changes. (I ended up going with Korg's suggestion which was based upon 84.129.176.210's.) Cbrown1023 talk 03:14, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Don't you mind if I merge the history of Wikimedia site feedback/main into this page? Korg 01:30, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see a problem with it. Go right ahead. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 01:38, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so done. :-) Finally, I chose to merge the previous history related to the header into the page Wikimedia site feedback/header you created, so it's not mixed up with the main page. Korg 02:55, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Polish Wikipedia foundation?

Is it OK, that during the wkimedia funadtion donation actions, on Polish page [1] there is request to donate Polish Wikipedia funadtion? I do not know anything about this funadation activities and how money are spend, it looks like they collects money using wikipedia popularity. Have you got any money from them? 87.105.179.198 11:04, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is okay that there is a note about donations towards Wikimedia Polska on the Fundraising page. They are a local chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation and you are free to donate to them. I am not sure where exactly the money you donate to them goes, however I am sure you can find more information on their site. You are still free to donate directly to the Wikimedia Foundation if you prefer. Cbrown1023 talk 21:59, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You can find here info about money collected by Stowarzyszenie Wikimedia Polska. It is not Polish Wikipedia Foundation - Foundation is one - the Wikimedia Foundation :) WMPL collaborate with the Wikimedia Foundntion. Look also at this page Przykuta 22:21, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedicine

I am not sure if this is the right venue for this suggestion, but I think that a valuable resource that the Wikimedia Foundation should consider exploring is a medical reference tool. This could include comprehensive pages on pharmacology, diseases, syndromes, etc., all phrased and formated in language intended for physicians and other health professionals. Though a site like this would obviously not be intended as a replacement for medical textbooks, but if accuracy is maintained by administrators, "Wikimedicine" could prove to be a valuable reference tool. Just throwing the idea out there. 24.128.24.231 03:45, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes,despite your claim for excellence,I find many articles to breif and many links simply no existant. If you wait everything to be ference by some higher authoryity website, your going to find much of your pages blank or full not much imformation. Some of your contributors write article so breif, that there not much to read on many of them. The links to nothing at all are a waste and I can go many other websites to the same material or better. You don't this sorry.I'm teling the truth. You a few choice article are good and plenty not so good.It would better to either write something your self or hello, least something by someone to add to later on.Believe or not,not everything can varified by some web site.Much is not on the web and much of sorry is somebodies opinion.

I believe you are in the wrong place, this is for comments related to the Wikimedia Foundation's official website: http://wikimediafoundation.org. If you have comments about a specific article you can post them at the article's talk page, accessed by clicking on the "talk" or "discussion" tab at the top of the article. Three Further Projects Wikimedia may like to look into

Hi, I propose three further projects that Wikimedia Foundation may like to look into and develop.

One is Wikiware, maybe a connection between all software writers who are interested in making software for free under the GNU license. I understand that there are sites doing it but a Wiki might make this much more productive. Or perhaps a collaboration with one of these sites which are making non-commmercialized, free softwares.

The other two are projects involving sound and video files. One would be Wikiaudiobooks, which make audiobooks of Wikibooks and Wikipedia (perhaps 1.0 ?). The beneficiary of this is the blind, the eye-impaired (like older people who can't access the web) etc.

The second is WikiASL and WikiBSL, Wikibooks or Wikipedia in the American sign language or British sign language. It may be said that since the hearing or speech impaired can read, this project is unnecessary, but it may be more profitable for them to watch a video and pick it up rather than otherwise. Or maybe a software can be produced which can produced a graphics of sign language?

All the best to freely given knowledge. 121.7.195.43 08:04, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your suggestion.
New Wikimedia projects are only launched after extensive discussion by the community and the Board. If you would like this project to be part of Wikimedia, please see the information on project creation at Proposals for new projects where you will find instructions on how to propose a new project.
Projects in new languages are launched after a request at Requests for new languages. Regarding an American Sign Language Wikipedia, please see the first closed proposal at Requests for new languages/Wikipedia American Sign Language and the current one (still in discussion) at Requests for new languages/Wikipedia American Sign Language 2.
I hope this helps. Cbrown1023 talk 21:01, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Donation gift certificate

Hey, the donation gift certificate idea rocks, but needs a grammar fix: has made must be changed to accommodate a plural giver (like "my wife and I").

the 2 second fix: change has to just, or change the merge sentence to read something like "This is to certify that _____________ made a contribution ... in your honor ...."

My mother's going to think that even my English lit degree was a waste of her money!

Keep up the good.

Phil Snead, charleston, sc

Erik Möller

Now that Erik is the Assistant ED, Deputy ED, or something along those lines, could Current staff be updated to reflect it? Also, could his bio on Board of Trustees mention his new position please? Thanks! Greeves (talk contribs) 04:04, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Common logins across all wiki sites

Right to left pages

Right to left languages such as Arabic or Persian need some tweaks to the site CSS to render fine. For example, the tiny icon which appears to the right of the external links (like this) will be trouble in RTL text, or some bulleted lists may show up stupid in Firefox, unless some CSS are applied to them.

There are two approaches:

  1. To apply some minor CSS changes (just like what we have already done on quality.wikimedia.org to make sure http://quality.wikimedia.org/wiki/Portal/fa shows up correctly) which only make the text of the page appear in right-to-left style and fix some major bugs. This way, the overall layout is not touched.
  2. To apply more massive CSS changes, which will fix some more bugs, such as making the first header on the page (like Portal/fa in the above example) to appear RTL as well. This will minorly touch the overall layout, but perhaps makes the page look more familiar for people form RTL langs.

I believe it is important to make the decision now, about what to do and the languages to include (I suggest fa, ar and he at least). The changes may reappear on other multilanguage wikis (quality, wmf, etc --even commons--) so we need a good base to be made, and then copied to other wikis.

I'm going to make suggestions, and I'm also looking forward your comments here in the mean time. Huji 09:08, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would prefer to the former option personally unless you give us more information. ;-) (like what other problems would be fixed/how necessary would this be/a possible demo-code). Cbrown1023 talk 01:41, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would go for the first suggestion as well. --Meno25 15:54, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Confused in Alabama

I don't exactly know how to go about voicing this insight.. however.. here goes>>> during the year of 2004 I had the oportunity to perform (I am a poet) at Lemoyne-Owens College, which is located in Memphis Tenn.. After the show we went to a resturant. At this resturant was Rufus and Carla Thomas.. Cala introduce the man with her as her father "Rufus Thomas". He appeared to look as I remember him to be and from photos I have seen with regard to the age over time. What puzzles me is that someone brought to my attention that "Wikimedia" has posted that Rufus Thomas died in 2001... if this is so then the man that was at the resturant was a fraud and so was the woman who introduce him as her father whom I believe to be Cala Thomas also contributed to this fruad... Please can someone either verify that he did not die in 2001 or support I am loosing my mental faculites... Wikileaks

Dear whomever,

I have just awakened to the existence of Wikileaks.

I am a columnist and it occurs to me that the potential of Wikileaks is colossal.

BUT (there's always a but isn't there) there appears ot be a lack of organization, simply solved I think. Most of my columns are Canada-relatedand it would be good to have a resource to which I could go for Canada-leaks. Is there any possibility of setting up a bunch of sites or just organizing them under categories such as Canada-leaks, Bush-leaks, Exxon-leaks, US-leaks and so forth

The more easily accessible wikileaks is/are the more powerful the impact.

Just a thought.

Max Wolfe

Thank you for contacting us regarding this matter. Unfortunately Wikileaks is not a Wikimedia Foundation project (it just shares the same software), so we can do nothing to help you. :-( I suggest you contact Wikileaks directly with your suggestion. Cbrown1023 talk 20:44, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe a prominent Click here to add feedback link at page top, for newcomers to the page who only want to leave feedback and don't want to spend further time understanding the page and where feedback actually goes on it. The intro text at top of this feedback page has gotten far to long and that confusing Main section, what does that mean? --69.181.78.131 03:42, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the link to the top, per your request. The "Main" section is just what it sounds like, the Main section of the page as opposed to the Admin noticeboard section. Cbrown1023 talk 22:33, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

wiki was left on my home page after a pain staking deletion of a virus!now i cant get it off! being connected to a virus does not impress me. in fact im not intrested in this web site at all because of all the procedures i went thru to remove [mona, virus]left this web site stuck to my home page. ?CARMA? IM NOT LOGGING INTO THIS!

I apologize for the fact that your computer was attacked by a virus but assure you that it was not caused by Wikipedia. The are some great instructions for removing the virus here. I believe the virus also sets your home page to one of our websites, you should be able to fix this by editing your internet options. Without knowing your browser information, I can't give you exact instructions, but if you're on Internet Explorer 7:
  1. First, if the navigation bar at the top is not showing (the thing that says File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, and Help), then hit the Alt button to show it.
  2. Then go to the Tools drop-down and click Internet options at the bottom.
  3. Then under the first tab (General), there will be a spot where you can input an address to set as your home page.
I hope this helps. Cbrown1023 talk 22:49, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your Cause

I would really like to have been able to donate to your cause. But I have a problem about people who go around violating my rights by infecting my personal property with a virus. Just because you have a problem with other people don't include me as a solution. If you would have sent e-mails I would probably supported your cause. But breaking the law is no way to get people to help you. I will be getting in touch with the proper authorities and send them the link to your site. What they decide to do with you is up to them. As far as I am concerned you are no better than the people who violate other peoples human rights.

I apologize for the fact that your computer was attacked by a virus but assure you that it was not caused by Wikipedia. The are some great instructions for removing the virus here. I hope this helps and assure you that we would not infect you with a virus to get you to donate. Cbrown1023 talk 01:38, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Future?

When it's Wikimedia's turn to step into mobile world?

You are a very big organization, and i think that many of us users will use e.g. Wikipedia from their mobile device.

And now the main question. Is it possible to convert e.g. Wikipedia to an offline java program for mobile use?

You might want to check out w:Wikipedia:PDA, w:Wikipedia:WAP, this mailing list post by our CTO, and mw:Mobile browser testing (a testing page). So if one of the current options don't already work for you, more solutions are being looked into. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 01:58, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia visual identity guidelines

I am a bit confused about why the Wikimedia visual identity guidelines say that "localized Wikimedia logos should not be used on business cards and letterheads". Wouldn't the WikiMedia organization rather that people know that a letter is being issued by a regional chapter rather than having it look like it came from the head office? --Arctic.gnome 03:30, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you read the full line... you'll see that the next part of the sentence says but the branch of the organisation should appear prominently in the design.. Basically, the idea is that the logo "Wikimedia" is a stand alone, and the name of the organisation will appear prominently on the page. In short, you'd have for example a big WIKIMEDIA _COUNTRY_ on the left of the letterhead, while the WIkimedia logo would appear non-localized (ie. only with Wikimedia). So people are very much aware whether the correspondance comes from Wikimedia Foundation, or Wikimedia France, or Serbia etc. notafish }<';> 23:16, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Somali clans

I'd just like to correct some account on Somali clans Particularly 'Daarood'.

I assume there was mistake when a large clan of Daarood has nat mentioned in your account of clans of Darod, and I don't think somebody can porposely do something like that. I hope you just correct that 'Gheri' is one of the main clans of Darod and you can even check with the history books on this part of the world. I surprised that when mr Ahmed gran was mentioned and not even mentioned hit traibe or clan which was Gheri.

Gheri Koombe is a brother of Harti koombe which I think the latter would try not mention his brother, but why no body can answer.

If you have comments about a specific article you can post them at the article's talk page, accessed by clicking on the "talk" or "discussion" tab at the top of the article. If you feel you can help in the writing of an article, you are more than welcome to edit it and add information. Your help would be probably greatly appreciated! :-) Cbrown1023 talk 00:31, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Backup

I think it is important to engineer a feature whereby wikipedia can be donloaded in its entireity and stored by any third party. This would serve to protect such an important body of information in the event of it being unavailable in the future for many possible reasons. Examples are a dicatorial govenment that censors free information, or a nuclear holocaust. If Wikpedia was available to be stored at will, it stands to reason that the probability of it surviving and being available for future generations is higher than if it only exists in its entireity on servers at a small number of locations.

I believe this already exists, see http://dumps.wikimedia.org. Other technical questions can also be asked on the public wikitech-l mailing list (subscription required before posting), where you will most likely get a more informed answer. Cbrown1023 talk 21:33, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mediawiki authorship

The foundation wiki page on "MediaWiki" incorrectly lists Magnus Manske as the original author. While I certainly used his screen design and features as inspiration--for which he deserves much credit--the codebase that became mediawiki was designed and rewritten from scratch by me, using none of Magnus's code (The first working versions had only my code and Geoffrey Dairiki's diff function). The wikipedia page is correct on this. I would correct the article here if I could. -- w:User:Lee Daniel Crocker

I hope you wouldn't mind if I check with brion before I changed that. Cbrown1023 talk 22:28, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lee's initial phase3 code was indeed a pretty much total rewrite from Magnus's phase2 code base; of course it's seen pretty much total turnover since then, as well. ;) How you want to divvy up the credit is more an art than a science. :) --brion 16:22, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks guys, I've removed all names because it would be awkward to try to include everyone. :-P I just mentioned that it was made by many people and continues to be updated, if they want more information they can peruse the MediaWiki website. Cbrown1023 talk 21:31, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's true--there's not much of my code left these days, so credit for actual current working code is pretty ambiguous. --LDC

feature suggestion

I had an idea for a feature which would probably be easy to implement. You could allow users to highlight wikipedia pages and save those highlights with their own special link (something like what tinyurl.org does). That way users could link wikipedia pages with the pertinent information highlighted.

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately we don't handle technical matters and suggestions here. I would advise that you contact Wikimedia's developers or system administrators about this by creating a bug report. If you are happy for your mail to be public, please register and create a bug on our Bugzilla <https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/>.The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.226.65.70 (talk • contribs) 01:34, 3 April 2008.
Thank you for writing to us about this, and I hope you will be able to reach a satisfactory resolution. Cbrown1023 talk 21:05, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Wikimedia projects are only launched after extensive discussion by the community and the Board. If you would like this project to be part of Wikimedia, please see the information on project creation at Proposals for new projects where you will find instructions on how to propose a new project.
However, the idea of a wiki thesaurus might be able to be incorporated into a current project, Wiktionary, the free dictionary.
Either way, thank you for your suggestion! Cbrown1023 talk 21:05, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is a spelling mistake in the note at the bottom of foundation:Resolution:Ombudsperson checkuser : "mentionned". John Vandenberg 11:40, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
