Volunteer Response Team

For prospective volunteers

OTRS volunteers are always welcome, but there is a fairly selective application process, given the nature of the work. Generally, OTRS administrators must be familiar with you and your work on Wikimedia projects before accepting you as a volunteer and issuing you an account. It may take some time before you receive a response in regards to your request, so please be patient.

If you are truly interested in helping out with OTRS and have not yet received a response as to that status of your application, please feel free to join the IRC channel and introduce yourself to some of our members. You still may be able to help out without an OTRS account (for more information, check out OTRS/IRC channel).

Before applying to volunteer, please read OTRS/info-en recruiting and make sure that the following statements accurately describe you:

  • you're willing to work on difficult, sensitive, and at times hostile messages;
  • you're courteous, skilled at resolving disputes, friendly even in the face of hostility, sensitive to the needs of those outside Wikipedia, and have exemplary discretion;
  • you're willing to provide identification to the Wikimedia Foundation (please see Access to nonpublic data policy for why we ask for this).

Please note that there is a firm recommendation of 16 as a minimum age for participation in the OTRS system, to ensure people have adequate real life and Wikimedia experience before taking on what is a considerable and important responsibility for the Foundation and the projects.

Feel free to specify if you are entrusted with any special tools on wikis (sysop, bureaucrat, checkuser, etc.). You may also add to your application links to archives of help desk posts, or identification on active mailing lists if you think they are relevant.

Please also send an email to volunteers-otrs AT wikimedia D0T org linking to your application on this page and giving your age, each time you apply. Thanks.

Note: Additional language skills are a plus. Currently, additional help is needed in: German, Hebrew, Arabic, Finnish and Italian queues (in order of backlog). Please make sure you mention any language skills you have.

Markov

--Markov 22:32, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
--Markov 14:42, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

(:Julien:) 09:29, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Attends plutôt quelques mois.--Bapti 13:36, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am Commons' sysop and often I need to check OTRS permissions. I am also a native speaker of Ukrainian (such language is not represented yet on OTRS).Ahonc 11:06, 8 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

szczepan1990

I am a Wikimedia Commons admin and an active contributor to the Polish Wikipedia. My main area of interest in both projects is graphic files - getting permissions to use them, marking improperly licensed or unlicensed files, as well as graphic files whose copyright owners did not agree for the Wikimedia projects to use them with relevant templates(after which it is a common thing for the uploaders to contact me in order to get directions regarding permissions). I also advise them on OTRS matters - where to send messages and how to formulate their agreement to apply a free license to a graphic work. I believe I could be of help to the OTRS team and I hope I can make its work smoother, even if only a little. Eager to read your comments, --Szczepan talk 15:42, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have been approached by Szczepan quite frequently in order to confirm OTRS tickets / permissions for graphic files. I know his drive to clarify the legal situation of as many files as possible on pl.wikipedia (with the count of graphic files around 17000 right now) and on Commons. I would say he'll make good and proper use of the information. Wojciech Pędzich Talk 15:45, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Support Support he is a very helpful user DingirXul 15:50, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I bet that szczepan will help a bit in a complicated situation with weird permissions on Polish Wikipedia. Also, he knows many things about free licenses. It's important, when checking permission, so he can say if that's really good perm or somebody need to send it again. Herr Kriss 15:53, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • I am positive that Szczepan's addition to the OTRS team will mean clarifying the status of a number of graphic files stored in Polish Wikipedia - I see his effort and support his activity as well as membership among OTRS volunteers. Ala z 15:55, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Support Support Szczepan is one of only several users at pl-wiki involved in the maintance of graphics (validating licenses, moving to commons, tracing violations of licenses and so on). He is fully familiar with licensing (also with all weird polish PD licenses) and other formal isues concerning that topic, so with his knowledge from Commons (as an admin) he would be very helpful, as a second polish speaking person, in maintaing ORTS tickets (which most concern licences). What is quite important, he isnt anonymous person for polish-wiki community - taking part in pl-wiki community general assemblies his face, identity and great personality are well known to many wikipedians from Poland therefore one can lay 100% trust in him as an ORTS operator. • Support Support Szczepan knows really a lot about different issues connected with graphics, has really nice personality which makes for him contacting with people easy, and can spend quite some time on OTRS. What shall we want more?

Saludos cordiales.

I'd like to help out on OTRS because the backlog on the permissions queues. I am active on the commons and believe I have the experience to help. I am currently a trusted user for flickr images. Evrik 14:29, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to help out on OTRS permissions for Commons because of Commons:Category:Items_pending_OTRS_confirmation_of_permission (and I am told of backlog on the queues too). I am a sysop on Commons, which could help when checking deleted images and the like. Thanks, Monobi (talk) 04:39, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

ShakataGaNai

I would like to get into OTRS for a few reasons: Initially to assist in admin related duties on Commons and verifying already on-wiki OTRS tags. Secondarily to deal with category backlogs (like OTRS Pending and Flickr) which I already work on. Lastly, because I end up dealing with an average of 3 OTRS cases every day. (I hope my previous statements make sense) --ShakataGaNai Talk 05:15, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to help out on OTRS because I am fairly regularly encountering BLP and other issue at the English Wikipedia (e.g. most recently http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Retarius#NCB ), and I would like to become more involved in this. Hesperian 03:31, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
