  1. I support any variation of this banner being used in any of the ways proposed here. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:00, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  2. When a fellow Wikipedian is persecuted to such an extreme extent for promoting free access to information, it is our duty to speak up as a movement.--Pharos (talk) 21:13, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Pete Forsyth I support any of the variants presented.

  6. We have done banners (SOPA) for causes we belive in and are benificial for us in the past. Now one of or own needs our help. Let's do just that. Josve05a (talk) 22:15, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Absolutely and unequivocally. Please note that by calling on the Syrian government to release Bassel, we do not take any political action. We do not take sides in the Syrian civil war, nor do we pass judgement on the Syrian authorities, the rebel forces, or anyone else taking part in the war in Syria. The wording of the banner and the landing page are clear and precise — our goal is to seek Bassel's release from prison, and that's it. We're not losing our neutrality for standing up for what believe in — as we have done in the past — or for standing up in defence of our volunteers — again, as we have done in the past. odder (talk) 22:15, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  8. Strong Support Wikipedia is not just an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is a community. I just hope Bassel is alright. We have to try every possible way. I support this campaign.--Satdeep Gill (talk) 22:28, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  10. I understand why people do not want to do political things... but if there was ever a time to speak out about something, its to protect one of our own. I support this, provided the banner is apolitical as possible (given the context). Bawolff (talk) 22:42, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  16. Support The dissemination of information and Free and Open Software are essential not just to Wikimedia itself but all the values it stands for beyond our community. We need to show that the way Bassel is being treated does not go unnoticed. If we speak up clearly in a highly visible medium like ours, we do not just support him, but many others who risk their lives and freedom for the sake of our common values. (And to those who say Wikimedia should not be politized: Our movement has always been political: It opposes the tyranny of the mind.) Asav (talk) 00:00, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  17. Support Mike Peel (talk) 00:11, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  18. Support -- While we should remain free of politics in most issues, the exception is those issues which directly affect our various projects. This is not unprecedented. Please see this article about protests against SOPA and PIPA. Etamni (talk) 00:21, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  25. Support But, I think that banner should NOT seek for "immediate and unconditional release", a matter concerning law and justice (if not politics), i.e far from Wikipedia's fields and goals. Banner should urge for "immediate information on Bassel's current condition and future", i.e KNOWLEDGE: this is what Wikipedia is all about. 33. Support the content of articles should reflect neutrality. The project was, is and never will be neutral. Education and empowerment can't be "neutral". This guy will be beheaded. One reason: editing Wikipedia. --Sargoth (talk) 08:02, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sargoth, are you sure that he is jailed because of his Wikipedia editing activity? Where and how did you get this information? — Yerpo Eh? 12:22, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yerpo, it's not about edits. It might not be the main reason in this case. Compare with this guy. Open society, open culture, free education, self-empowerment, critical points of view - they belong together. --Sargoth (talk) 17:28, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but you said like it was. There's a lot of guys like Bassel and Diderot, which is exactly why I think Wikipedia is not a good venue to politicize each individual's issue. — Yerpo Eh? 07:20, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  77. Support - A strict commitment to the spirit and principle of NPOV would dictate Wikipedia should not play the role of advocate, so in that regard I'm sympathetic to the "oppose" position. However, while NPOV is a core content policy, Wikipedia's identity is as both an encyclopedia (with content) and a community (with people). The only reason Wikipedia should ever play the role of advocate is to protect one or the other. That's not an open-ended commitment of support to any Wikipedian who happens to get in some trouble for this or that reason, but an acknowledgment that actions which threaten the ability of a people to edit Wikipedia without fear is a threat to Wikipedia and its mission. Therefore, support. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 05:57, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  99. Support Support MZMcBride's concerns are fair and I think it a hard choice. We'd be going to open a floodgate. But a death sentence w/o nothing but being a free knowledge activist is within a limit we fairly chime in I believe. As concerning to keep apoliticality of the project, Wikimedia project aims to provide free knowledge from NPOV and this cause itself is far from apolitical: supporting free knowledge itself is a political and pragmatic action, nor pure theoretical, nor aesthetic. --Aphaia (talk) 13:53, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
