| Description |
Nederlands: De collegiale Sint-Gummaruskerk werd gebouwd op de plek waar een Romaanse parochiekerk stond, gewijd aan Sint-Jan-de-Doper. De bouw van de Sint-Gummaruskerk begon in 1378 en duurde ongeveer 200 jaar. Zo komt het, dat de onderste geledingen zuiver gotisch zijn, de middelste barok, en de torenkap rococo. De bouwheren waren de families Keldermans en De Waghemakere.
Op 20 oktober 1496 werd hier het huwelijk van Filips de Schone en Johanna van Castilië ingezegend. Bijzonder zijn de Koninklijke glasramen (1516-1519) geschonken door Maximiliaan van Oostenrijk ter gelegenheid van de aanstelling van Karel V als hertog van Brabant. Ze werden vervaardigd door hofglazenier Nicolaas Rombauts. "De kroning van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw" behoort tot de absolute top van laatgotische glasraamkunst in het hertogdom Brabant. De Colibrant-triptiek (1516) geschilderd door Goossen van der Weyden. Het opvallende koordoksaal uit de 16de eeuw wordt gekenmerkt door rijkelijk versierde beeldengroepen. In de 19de eeuw kwam hier nog een torentje met een Sint-Gummarusbeeld bij. |
