Revision as of 17:18, 26 December 2004

Although developers are given server access to assist them with developing the software and maintaining the hardware, there are a number of non-development tasks which can only be carried out by people with server access. Users of Wikimedia projects rely on developers to carry these out and they request assistance on various pages across the projects. This page brings together a selection of the tasks which developers can help with when they need a break from real development work. These tasks may be a good way for developers to avoid wikistress caused by too much time looking at code.

  1. Language files to be updated
  2. Requests for languageXX.php update
  3. en:Wikipedia:Changing attribution for an edit
  4. Changing username (See also English requests)
  5. Server outage message
  6. Fundraising site notice
  7. Requests for logos
  8. Requests for queries
  9. en:Wikipedia:SQL query requests
  10. Non-compliant site coordination

Other requests

If you have a request for a developer not covered by the pages linked above, please add it below. This is specifically for non-development tasks. Bug reports and feature requests should go to our bug tracker, MediaZilla.

vi.wikibooks: Localized interface

The Vietnamese Wikibooks currently uses the English-language interface. Vietnamese doesn't have its own LanguageVi.php file yet, but the Vietnamese Wikipedia and Vietnamese Wiktionary have mostly translated interfaces, using the MediaWiki system. I'd like the interface transfered from w:vi:, so I can start customizing it. Thanks. – [[User:Mxn|Minh Nguyễn (talk, blog)]] 02:07, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Spam regex requests

I think http://en.thinkexist.com should be blocked - the owner adds it again and again to promote his quotation website, regardsless being told many times it has wikiqoute for that. Ahoerstemeier 17:34, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Please add filter for cracowonline.com. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Krakow#Spam --Gene s 11:06, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

See the edit history of en:Comment for a good example of how long this has been going on. The same spammers have also targeted BerliOS relentlessly. Note that some of the URLs look like repeats, but they're actually slightly different. I know it's a long list (took me a while to compile), but filtering them would be very helpful. -- Hadal 07:20, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Stolen username

q:user:Guanaco was taken by w:user:Michael around Aug 16 to make a bunch of edits. I would like to edit Wikiquote with the same name that I use on other wikis, and I don't want these edits attributed to me. The edits need to be reassigned and the email address needs to be set to "guanaco@cox.net" so that I can reset the password and claim the account. Guanaco 20:46, 17 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Ditto m:User:Francs2000 was taken by w:user:Michael for a similar reason earlier this year. I have created this as a user name on all the other main wikis for when I do transwiki-ing from en: and would like to keep the same user name on meta. Please let me know at en: if you need my email address, I won't put it up here in case of spammers. -- 217.41.241.203 14:40, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC) (Francs2000)

Maybe not quite the same case, but similar. Is there any hope, doctor? Marc Girod 09:26, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Changing shortcut icons

All of Wikimedia's sites use the same W shortcut icon. Working on multiple wikis would be much easier if some were changed. There are new icons for Meta, Wikibooks, and Wikiquote here. --Yath 17:41, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • New favicons are a good idea. And handily they've already been made for you :) --Kwekubo

Change of project namespace

Hu

I made changes on LanguageHu.php to change the namespace and other strings in otherprojects, so first please revise and update the file from http://narya.grin.hu/tmp/LanguageHu.php.diff which is a diff against the CVS version. Then I don't know (yet) where the project names are, so here they come for Hungarian projects, please change or tell me what to diff:

  • Wikipedia = Wikipédia
  • Wikibooks = Wikikönyv
  • Wikiquote = Wikidézet
  • Wiktionary = Wikiszótár

Possible future project names would be (when/if they get dissected to languages):

  • Wikisource = Wikiforrás
  • Commons = Adattár

Hopefully my change to the language file will change the namespaces automagically. Please in the meantime point me to the file where these are stored so next time I can simply provide a patch. I'd appreciate a feedback for the changes done on my hu talk page, don't worry about the language just leave a message at the top or the bottom, thanks. --grin 12:17, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Server configuration updated. I now have to backport your patch for LanguageHu.php from HEAD to version 1.3. Should be hopefully done in the next hours or so :o) Hashar 19:05, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi

Could you please change the namespace of http://hi.wiktionary.org to विक्षनरी (Wiktionary). Thanks. Yann 20:10, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hello, I am not sure of the techical terms so I'll put my question as a lay person. Is it possible to use the hindi translation for the user interface at hi.wikipedia.org for hindi wiktionary, hindi wikiquote, hi wikibooks etc.? That way we have to translate the common terms and pages only once? p.s.and then some

e.g. any changes made to http://hi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:All_system_messages could be reflected for all the other hindi projects. I guess it will cause a problem with the 'about' page - is there a way to get around that?

Please let me know if it is possible. Thanks, Shree 23:22, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi, Could you please change the namespace for the Gujarati Wikipedia and Wiktionary ? Thansk, Yann 19:28, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Language.php

I would like to have the language.php file for English and Italian. I have been told to get it from CVS which is not helpfull. After more than half an hour, I cannot find it. I would like to create a file for a new language ahead of a project. Thanks, GerardM 20:38, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thanks, GerardM 20:38, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

LanguageEn.php contains only

<?php
# See language.doc

require_once( 'LanguageUtf8.php' );

class LanguageEn extends LanguageUtf8 {
	# Inherit everything
}

?>

The Italian one is here. See the phase3/languages/ folder at sourceforge for the full list of language files available. Angela 23:32, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Conversion to UTF-8

Please can someone convert the es:wiktionary to UTF-8; unlike all other wiktionaries it is still on the old system and it can therefore not function properly like the others. It is also better not to wait for release 1.4, there is a genuine need to convert is as soon as possible. Thanks, GerardM 07:47, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Done by Shaihulud :) Thanks :) GerardM 08:56, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Months and weekday names translation at ka:

Hi there. Regarding the Language.php at ka: (georgian), I would like to change just the month and weekday names. Could someone please do it for me? I have a question though. What are these names used for? I saw they are used for CURRENTMONTHNAME and CURRENTDAYNAME. Are they used for anything else? This is because, while names of months and weekdays are nominative when used alone, when expressing dates, it's more usual to have to use them in dative, and so they have different spelling. Did you predict anything like this? Do you have an alternative naming for such cases in other languages?

In case you can only use one name for each month/weekday AND they are used for something else (like a script that creates months and dates pages automatically), please use the "Normal names". If it's just for for CURRENTMONTHNAME and others, please use the second ("Dative names"). If it's possible two have both names, that's even better :).

Normal names (like the name for an article called "January"):

  • January - იანვარი
  • February - თებერვალი
  • March - მარტი
  • April - აპრილი
  • May - მაისი
  • June - ივნისი
  • July - ივლისი
  • August - აგვისტო
  • September - სექტემბერი
  • October - ოქტომბერი
  • November - ნოემბერი
  • December - დეკემბერი
  • Monday - ორშაბათი
  • Tuesday - სამშაბათი
  • Wednesday - ოთხშაბათი
  • Thursday - ხუთშაბათი
  • Friday - პარასკევი
  • Saturday - შაბათი
  • Sunday - კვირა

Dative names (When stating a date):

  • January - იანვარს
  • February - თებერვალს
  • March - მარტს
  • April - აპრილს
  • May - მაისს
  • June - ივნისს
  • July - ივლისს
  • August - აგვისტოს
  • September - სექტემბერს
  • October - ოქტომბერს
  • November - ნოემბერს
  • December - დეკემბერს
  • Monday - ორშაბათს
  • Tuesday - სამშაბათს
  • Wednesday - ოთხშაბათს
  • Thursday - ხუთშაბათს
  • Friday - პარასკევს
  • Saturday - შაბათს
  • Sunday - კვირას

As for the short name, we can use the first 3 letters of each, without any problem on what kind of sentence we're in:

  • January - იან
  • February - თებ
  • March - მარ
  • April - აპრ
  • May - მაი
  • June - ივნ
  • July - ივლ
  • August - აგვ
  • September - სექ
  • October - ოქტ
  • November - ნოე
  • December - დეკ
  • Monday - ორშ
  • Tuesday - სამ
  • Wednesday - ოთხ
  • Thursday - ხუთ
  • Friday - პარ
  • Saturday - შაბ
  • Sunday - კვი

Strange article in database

On en:Category:Mathematics a strange entry Lam%e9%27s_Special_Quartic shows up, but probably due to the bad title it's not a blue link. I also didn't succeed to reach that article by playing around with the URL manually, thus I guess it can only be accessed by direct database access.
