Stewards/elections 2006

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
This is an archived version of this page, as edited by Phe (talk | contribs) at 09:36, 20 December 2005 (→‎Votes). It may differ significantly from the current version.

Explanation

Stewards are people who can give users special flags, give bots bot flags, provide CheckUser information from every project and overally, be good people for Wikimedia.

Warning : stewards are not extra-cops !!! If you wish to be a steward to be able to unsysop people on your own favorite project, forget it. It is generally frowned upon to desysop editors from your home project (best to leave that to neutral stewards).

A plea : most of the activity is likely not to be on your own mother project, but on small languages. To really help, you need to frequently come to meta and to FOLLOW pages of request (for permission, for bot status, for checkuser help). If you wish to apply only to help on your own project, please move on and let the job to others.

Now, who do we need? Someone who:

  • ...could provide some of their free time to do some Steward work
  • ...is multilingual and helpful towards people
  • ...is available
  • ...is an active contributor on meta

Rules

If you want to become a steward, please list yourself below. The voting will start on the 20th December 2005 and it'll end on the 10th January 2006. You can list yourself during that time, but you'll have lower chances then. The Board will choose a group of users (from 1 to 10) who'll gain steward status.

To get through the elections, you must:

  • Gain at least 30 votes in favor
  • At least 80% overall votes in favor
  • Have an account on Meta with a linked account on another project
  • Be active for at least 3 months on that project
  • Preferably show you are active on meta as well (link to your contributions on meta for example, or mention you are already sysop here)

You can provide a short statement regarding your background on Wikimedia, current activity and anything else you want.

Please remember to follow the Steward policies. Also be aware of the fact that inactive stewards will have their steward flag taken away.

Voters: Anyone can vote provided that he has a valid account on meta with a link to at least one user page, on a project where the editor is a participant, with at least 3 months participation (not just to his userpage but) to the project.
In case of suspicion of sock puppetry, checkusers could be asked to check and sock puppet votes cancelled.

Candidates

The election starts 20th of December 2005 and ends 10th of January 2006.

I happened to get a Meta account earlier today, and Vilerage pointed me this way when I mentioned to him an interest in being a Steward, so I shall volunteer for these elections. I can read French with some decency, and Spanish and Latin with slight decency, I have been active on En since May 2005 and an Administrator on En since October 2005. Best regards. Well, he was elected during the first elections in 2004. And he was quite far away from current requirements (he did not have 30 supports at all). So, it might make sense to reconfirm him anyway. Anthere

  2. No. It is a bit hard to say, but I vote no for two reasons. First because he was actually originally elected with quite few votes. Second, while I am sure he will never abuse the tool, I think he is not respecting the spirit of it which is to use it to help all projects and all languages. Arno is fine, but use it only to help eo editors and never take care of other requests. I find the position a little bit questionable. So, I will not mind if he is confirmed, but I have to state that opinion of mine nevertheless. Anthere
  3. Oppose. Wakes up only three or four times a year (of course I'm exagerating a bit) to the extend he actually does not remember he is already a steward. Geez, Arno. villy 00:57, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  1. No. Botmasters do not have to edit with their bots, user pages for adding interwikis. This must be chosen by user themselves, and they should prefer to leave, on "foreign" wikis, only a link to the mother language user page. Also, a bot can't never be sure that the same user name on two wikis allows to the same user. So I can't trust this user until he has not given an engagement to stop that stuff. • I have been a registered user on en: since October 2003, and an admin there since July 2005. Though en: occupies most of my time, I also read meta: and commons: regularly, and often work on interwiki links in other projects. - jredmond 18:23, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Since you commented... what can you tell us about the rules for check user tools use ? Anthere
I'm not sure exactly what you meant by that question, so I'll try to answer what I think you're asking. :)
Typically, the CheckUser tools are used to investigate vandals and spammers so that admins can apply range blocks or notify ISPs appropriately. Less frequently, the tools can be employed to look for sockpuppetry in votes; to vindicate users accused of sockpuppetry; and to help the Wikimedia Foundation comply with subpoenas and other court orders. The information gathered from the tools should not be released publicly, though — wherever possible, it needs to be generic in nature, and when it must be discussed in detail then that should only be done in strict confidence with a trusted user.
Most larger Wikimedia projects have their own users with access to the tools, so there is virtually no need for a steward to use the tool in those places. However, if a particular project has no such users and has a demonstrated need, then a steward can use the tools to answer yes/no questions about the similarities between two suspected abusers.
Is that what you had in mind? - jredmond 03:50, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Reasons for nomination:
    • I have previously been granted temporary checkuser and admin powers by stewards, and believe I can handle the position.
    • I spend nearly every waking hour on Wikipedia, watching the mailing lists, and on IRC (#wikimedia, #wikipedia, and #wikimania, in particular), and can easily be reached in emergencies.
    • Danny suggested that I run :)

If you have any questions, let me know. Thanks!

Selfnomination: I am a native Dutchman, mainly interested in Information Technology, Language, Music and (Old) (SF) movies and series.

I like to experience the cross-project activities and am currently contemplating to run a bot. Maybe I should go for operator status on the Dutch or English wiki's first, but I thought, why not give this perceived shortcut a go: honesty and straigtforwardness and adherence to proper conduct is what you may always expect from me.
