cs:Wikipedista:Tompecina temp. desysop

Completed by Danny. Discussion will probably continue at Requests for comments/Cswiki issues. Archived from Requests by Wikimol 22:24, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

cs:Wikipedista:Tompecina - temporary removal of admin flag is requested (1 day should be enough). Tompecina was blocked after breaking 3RR. Unfortunately he was unable to calm down and deblocked himself. Several blockings and self-deblockings followed - see cs:Speciální:Log. --Wikimol 20:42, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It should be pointed out that this account of the events is untrue. Regretfully, the whole case seems to be very similar to the recent expulsion of Vít Zvánovec. Without going into much detail, I would like to mention that a spelling change that violated an approved rule on cs.wiki was made and my alleged breach of the 3RR was merely due to my legitimate attempt to enforce the rule. I tried to discuss the matter with the other members involved in the dispute, who later admitted that I was absolutely correct in interpreting the rule. Therefore, the ban was wholly unwarranted and it was in order to overrule it. I always try to settle things peacefully, and it was only due to excessive use of reverts by the other members that the conflict escalated, but again, if it were not for my banning (without taking a vote, even without a word of warning), there would be no conflict now. I still hope for things to be resolved by discussion rather than by using (and potentially abusing) formal authorities. --Tompecina 21:20, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This request was annouced on cs wiki on Village pump --Zirland 21:02, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

the editor is not sysop according to our interface. So I did not remove the status. Anthere
Actually it was made by Danny on 18 September 2005 at 22:07, not bothering noticed that. I point out Wikimol asked only for temporary removal of admin flag (1 day should be enough), although even that is controversial. -- Vít Zvánovec 07:39, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This is not a problem anymore. I left cs.wiki with no intention of coming back. Basically, as I said earlier, these people are bullies, knowing very little about what making an encyclopaedia is about (most of them posses no recognisable expert knowledge or skills they could contribute - some of them writing in hideous, semi-illiterate Czech at that). Their only concern is the POWER they can exert over those who actually work for the community, telling them how to do things they cannot do themselves, correcting their alleged spelling errors (which are no errors at all) and flexing their egos by punishing them for non-existent infractions. The prognosis is bleak: either the community is going to summon enough strength to get rid of the wimps who are terrorising it (which is unlikely to happen), or cs.wiki will become a quagmire run by worshippers of mediocrity, which it more or less is now. --Tompecina 09:07, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The problems with Tompecina in this case were breaking three reverts rule (six reverts!) and misusing of administrator's rights in his own case. It is a bit funny if he says our only concern is power. BTW, on Requests_for_comments/Cswiki_issues Tompecina says he was expelled from cs.wiki which is not true at all. --Radouch 09:24, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
As I wrote on Requests for comments/Cswiki issues#cs.wiki, Radouch and others fatally failed to punish Cinik's provocations, because he shares with them the membership in the same clique. 3RR is not a dogma, you should have tried IAR instead to find a compromise. That's why I must emphasise that the Group of lynchers is thirsty for power and lacks any common sense. -- Vít Zvánovec 15:53, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No only have I been suspended, but I was not even allowed to post a short statement on my own talk page, and a completely unrelated article I wrote - Výklad (právo) - was deleted as a punishment. I rest my case, nihil habeo cum cs.wiki. --Tompecina 09:37, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Now is more than one day when stewards were asked to desysop Mr. Pecina for one day. I see no restoration of his rights: Special:Log/rights and cs:Special:Listusers/sysop. -- Vít Zvánovec 07:19, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

cs:User:Ludek was in conntact with Tompecina. Before removal Tompecina wrote him he didnt want to be sysop. Tompecina also twice announced leaving cs wikipedia. There is probably nobody against return of rights if Tompecina announces change of his decisions. --Li-sung 08:19, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It is absurd to set new and new conditions for restoring Mr. Pecina's rights. The application for temporary desysopping was unconditional. The term is now over, it's time to return his rights. -- Vít Zvánovec 08:45, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, a farcical end to a farcical story. Of the several explanations why my access rights cannot be restored, this one is my favorite: It is necessary to protect me from spoofers. What if someone used my (presumably poorly protected) password and harmed me by doing mischief in my name!? Fun, just pure fun... --Tompecina 08:58, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to explain to Beren & Malý čtenář unreasonableness of this claim, but in vain. I am sorry for that, but those who don't wish to hear they don't hear. -- Vít Zvánovec 12:21, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
@Tompecina: Stop laughing and give clear answer, please. Do you want to be sysop on cswiki (yes/no)? --80.250.18.19 09:03, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Wrong question. I don't intend to go to Italy in order to use up the balance on my Viacard highway-toll prepaid card before it expires. Still, I am entitled to the balance. --Tompecina 09:42, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
As bureaucrat on the Czech Wikipedia I feel to write some short explanation.
On the 18th September in reaction of Tompecina's messages in summaries of his contributions I asked Tompecina by mail if he really wants to give up sysop rights. He answered me by mail: "Yes." It was before action of stewards. Tompecina later also wrote on his own page (as new user Tomáš Pecina, because account Tompecina was temporarily blocked), that he will not work on the Czech Wikipedia. He also wrote on meta: "I left cs.wiki with no intention of coming back."
It means that Tompecina once wrote he does not want to be a sysop. He twice wrote he does not want to work on the cs Wikipedia. So now I am surprised what he writes here. Detailed description I already sent to steward Datrio (including parts of mails with translation to Datrio's mother tongue). I promissed him that I can send whole mail correspondention if he ask for it.
Today morning I sent mail to Tompecina, that if he changed decision, then he himself has to write it and in that case let he himself ask stewards for sysop rights back. --Ludek 09:52, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
In my view this is meaningless. Tomáš Pecina was desysopped temporarily, there is no valid reason to be desysopped for ever. -- Vít Zvánovec 12:21, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Most likely "Rule Tompecina": temporary measures are permanent if the offender is unpopular with the sysops. --Tompecina 13:10, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It seems the cs.wiki is busy disciplining another user (Jvano) who happened to vote against he majority on the issue of blocking Vít Zvánovec. No, nihil habeo... --Tompecina 11:06, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have already noticed much earlier (23 August 2005), Mr. Vaňo is often victim of the clique of lynchers. I am very sorry that no steward did any effective action. -- Vít Zvánovec 12:21, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I am User:Juzeris and I am mostly active on English Wikipedia (w:User:Juzeris) and Latvian Wikipedia (lv:User:Juzeris). I have been an admin on Latvian Wikipedia since November 2004 and have translated most of the user interface. From time to time I have been contributing also to the English Wiktionary (User:Juzeris). The community of Latvian Wikipedia is finally ready to start working on its own Latvian Wiktionary. Therefore, I kindly ask you to grant me administrator/bureaucrat status there. Thank you! --Juzeris|talk 09:28, August 22, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry for the wrong order of procedure. Now I have informed the community of Latvian Wikipedia (since there are no active users in Latvian Wiktionary to inform). If you're interested in getting the opinions of Latvian administration, the other two Latvian admins are Tail (she's a bureaucrat as well) and Feens. --Juzeris|talk 19:59, August 22, 2005 (UTC)
I see that Juzeris is sysop now, so I guess this has been handled. - Andre Engels 09:00, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am a sysop in Latvian Wikipedia, but I was asking about Wiktionary. --Juzeris|talk 16:17, September 1, 2005 (UTC)
Well, the Latvian Wiktionary hasn't had any edits in some time. Please first:
  1. Make some edits to it, so we can see you're interested in this project
  2. List your request for adminship on some local page on Wiktionary, so the community users in the future will be aware you have been made a sysop in that way.
After that, you'll probably be granted sysop/bureaucrat status. Datrio 09:45, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at a broader span of recent edits, say, more than a week, you can see that I had been contributing to it even before this morning.
I have placed a separate notice on Latvian Wiktionary as well.
Is there a issue concerning the language of those notices? Is that the reson why it is taking so long? If it helps, my interest in this whole project in long-term could be seen, e.g., from my contributions to English Wikipedia.
Frankly speaking, I'm quite confused. What else should I had done to be granted adminship? Should I had become more involved in the English speaking community of Wikimedia? --Juzeris|talk 14:13, September 4, 2005 (UTC)
  • Done. Actually in the last month the only edits on lv.wiktionary are from Juzeris. I don't see any point in making him waiting any longer, and he informed the lv.wikipedia community on august 22. Seems there are no oppositions. --Snowdog 23:46, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

May I request the CheckUser flag for myself on enbooks? It would help us greatly with our attempts to stop the ongoing AP vandalism. - Aya T C 17:46, 14 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I do not support that. There is currently a privacy policy very little respected by anyone, and supposingly, this tool is only accessible to one arbcom member and Tim. We are far from the account. So, if we change this, we must absolutely change first the privacy policy not to claim we do not do certain things that are in reality done routinely. Either way will be fine by me, but claims on our privacy policy should be respected. Aya, this is not personal, this is policy. Anthere 07:01, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This seems a little more contentious than I originially supposed. My reasoning for requesting this is, as per m:Privacy policy: Where the user has been vandalising articles or persistently behaving in a disruptive way, data may be released to assist in the targeting of IP blocks, or to assist in the formulation of a complaint to relevant Internet Service Providers. If you wish to U-turn this policy, that is fine also, and I shall withdraw my request. In the past I had been taking each case of AP vandalism (which happens quite regularly) to Brion VIBBER (or another one of the admin-dudes) who released the IP info as per this policy, but I got the impression he was getting a bit fed up with my frequent requests, so it was suggested by another one of the admin-dudes (I forget which), that I should apply for this flag. Also, I don't consider this a personal attack at all, and you are right to be concerned, since the page CheckUser seems to read more like a discussion page than a policy document, and is thus unclear as to when this flag should be granted, and under what circumstances it should be used. It might be suggested to wait until this document is more clearly defined, but since no-one is actually personally responsible for maintaining this document, it may never happen. - Aya T C 16:54, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Can you please list examples where the privacy policy is not respected? I do not remember any cases, since the privacy policy became official, where information was given out in violation of it. -- Jeronim 08:57, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Let me explain more. Here are some bits of from the m:privacy policy which are currently of my concern :

When using a pseudonym, your IP address will not be available to the public, but it will be stored on the wiki servers for a relatively short amount of time. Thus it will be available to developers and may be released under certain circumstances (see below).

Below mentions It is the policy of Wikimedia that personally identifiable data collected in the server logs will not be released by the developers who have access to it, except as follows: In response to a valid subpoena or other compulsory request from law enforcement

  • With permission of the affected user
  • To Jimbo Wales, his legal counsel, or his designee, when necessary for investigation of abuse complaints.
  • Where the information pertains to page views generated by a spider or bot and its dissemination is necessary to illustrate or resolve technical issues.
  • Where the user has been vandalising articles or persistently behaving in a disruptive way, data may be released to assist in the targeting of IP blocks, or to assist in the formulation of a complaint to relevant Internet Service Providers
  • Where it is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of the Wikimedia Foundation, its users or the public.

Wikimedia policy does not permit public distribution of such information under any circumstances, except as described above.

Now, the line might be between what we qualify as "public release" to "release to some editors". But I already witnessed myself one case where an ip check was made on a user who was hardly disruptive and did not qualify as vandal, he was not told an ip check was made on him, and the request was simply done by an admin. This is frankly very borderline with our privacy policy. So, I think that before giving any check user rights to ANYONE (and this include stewards as well) we must clarify what is okay to do and not okay to do and under which circonstances. Or we need to update the privacy policy to indicate ip checks may be done with very limited restrictions. If the community is okay with this, then why not, but we should not write something and do another. Please see what is currently written on the check user page as well. Anthere 09:42, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Strongly oppose. After a discussion on IRC I got the impression that Aya is misunderstanding the purpose of checkuser and is not (yet) able to handle this feature in a responsible manner. --Elian 14:58, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You can hardly blame the misunderstanding if you take the time to read how vague the page CheckUser actually is. But since your strong opposition would imply that this page makes perfect sense to you, perhaps you wouldn't mind clarifying it for the rest of us. See also Brion's first comment on bugzilla:1 - Aya T C 00:54, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Datrio agreed to make a draft of a policy under which a group of editors from one project could ask to a steward to check an editor ip. I think this could be a good solution Anthere 15:41, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps, but I can get this infomation more quickly by asking for it in #wikimedia-tech. At least one of the people in there is actually paid money to take on the responsibility for providing this information, whereas (as far as I am aware) stewards are merely volunteers and have no responsibilities at all, thus they can all go on an indefinite Wikibreak if they like. But I could be wrong. - Aya T C 01:11, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Brion's is absolutely not bound to give you this information and is not paid for this task. I also trust he will give it to you only for cases of vandalism. Which is precisely the problem at stack. Brion or stewards (who are just as trusted than Brion) can at least ensure this tool is not abused and used strictly to fight vandalism. Anthere 06:58, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I would only ask in cases of vandalism (this is the whole context of this thread). I don't care about sock-puppetry (which was the original, rather pathetic, reason for introducing this feature). We have far more sane ways of dealing with this, which is to judge disagreements not by the the number of "votes", but the reasoning behind said "votes". A "me-too vote" which is merely "I agree with Bob", is not weighed very highly. We never claimed to be a "direct democracy". I'm making this request to help prevent vandalism, thus your hinderences on this request encourage vandalism. I submit that this attitude makes you a vandal by proxy. - Aya T C 15:28, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Aya, while the logic and reasoning about Anthere being a vandal by proxy is somewhat sound, I think it's ridiculous anyhow, and it certainly isn't helping you to accuse a member of the board of the foundation of being a vandal, even if only by proxy. --Node ue 00:24, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

He did not run for sysop election and was not elected. Now that there are elected Admins in nds.wiktionary.org, his temporary sysop privilege is no longer neccessary and should be removed, as he was not elected.

Done. users "Slomox" and "Heiko Evermann" is sysop. user "GerardM" removed sysop.--Shizhao 11:19, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Still, even if not request, please inform the local community about a fact you're running a bot (yes, I copied this text from the message up above, I'm lazy). Datrio 06:39, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, they can see that from Recent changes ;). I created a new page just for you Boti. PS: I'm also an admin there, so I think that there is no problem (now). Regards, --Klemen Kocjancic 18:04, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, a page for me, thanks! ;) Okay, no objections neither from me, nor the community - so done. Datrio 10:15, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[19:26:58] <PMA> could you de-admin me on the En-wikipedia please
[19:27:37] <Datrio> that's temporary, or permanent?
[19:27:53] <PMA> for a while at least
[19:28:31] <Datrio> well... okay, but if you'll want to become a sysop again,
you'll have to ask the local community for sysop status, you're aware of that?
[19:28:56] <PMA> yes ive been through that before
[19:29:48] <Datrio> fine, just a second
[19:30:34] <PMA> thank you
[19:31:26] <Datrio> okay, done and logged

  • A Wikipedian told me that on cs.wikipedia.org a vote to desysop Víta Zvánovce was passed with 25 for desysop and 11 against. Since also some Admins voted for De-Sysop, I see this as a clear vote of distrust for this user and take away his Sysop rights. I would recommend to this user that he tries to get again to an election for sysop. If he gets his rights back by just complaining everywhere he shows that he does not care about the trust of the community in his work... Sorry :-( Fantasy 21:26, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Erm.. Fantasy, why did you put that here, after you took down his sysop flag? ;) In any case, I talked with the cs community - they agree that this decision is legitimate, even though there's a bit of controversy on the vote - 67% of people should be for his desysoping, but only 65.8% are for (...or 69%, if you'll ignore the two other votes). Anyway, I'll try to be up-to-date on this situation, as Czech and Polish are pretty common. Datrio 22:05, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I got an email with the request to do it, and the right place to put the request would have been here, so I have put it here, that is why. I also don't like to do things without comment. Therefore I wrote here why I did it, and that it can be undone, if the one is crying too loud...
Thanks for your help :-) Fantasy
  • Hello, I have done a lot for the german Wiktionary and now I am also interested in improving the icelandic Wiktionary.

If you have questions about my reputation, please take a look at my user pages. I announced my request in the icelandic Wiktionary here. Many thanks in advance, --Spacebirdy 21:24, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
