Welcome to the Wikimedia project "Semantic MediaWiki"!

This portal is under construction. Please be patient while it is filled with information (wait until this CET evening before judgingn or editing its contents ;-). --Markus Krötzsch 10:21, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Scope of the project

The Wikiproject "Semantic MediaWiki" is provides a common platform for discussing extensions of the MediaWiki software that allow for a simple, machine-based processing of Wiki-content. This usually requires some form of "semantic annotation" of Wiki-content, but the special Wiki-environment and the multitude of envisaged applications impose a number of additional requirements.

The overall objective of the project is to develop a single solution for semantic annotation which fits both the needs of most Wikimedia projects and the specific requirements for usability and performance which are highly important in a global wiki. It is understood that ad hoc implementations (i.e. "hacks") could sometimes solve single problems, but agreeing on common editing syntax, underlying technology, exchange formats, etc. bears huge advantages for all participants.
