The two largest are a 5 million-fan [<tvar|wpfacebook>https://www.facebook.com/wikipedia</> Facebook page for Wikipedia], and a 320,000-follower Twitter account, <tvar|wptwitter>[https://twitter.com/wikipedia @wikipedia]</>. Verified [<tvar|wpinstagram>https://www.instagram.com/wikipedia/</> Instagram], and [<tvar|wpfb>https://www.pinterest.com/wikipedia/</> Pinterest] accounts are used to post public domain and CC0 licensed photos. Our social media strategy is to act as brand ambassadors, bridging the gap between a curious public and complex movement. If you see any problems with our social media, email digital communications manager Jeff Elder immediately at jelder(_AT_)wikimedia.org, or email socialmedia-internal(_AT_)wikimedia.org. We also strongly recommend joining our Facebook group, where community members around the world can compare notes and give their opinions about the Wikimedia Foundation's social media.

Team

The social media team* is led by Digital Communications Manager Jeff Elder, who reports to Heather Walls. Also working with the team are James Alexander, Juliet Barbara, Ed Erhart, Aubrie Johnson, Zack McCune, and Heather Walls. Community members are welcome to suggest ideas and chime in on drafts of posts via a public email list, social-media(_AT_)lists.wikimedia.org.

How to submit ideas for posts on Wikimedia Foundation and Wikipedia verified social media accounts

  • To request a retweet: If you want a retweet from the Foundations’ verified Twitter accounts, please email socialmedia-internal(_AT_)wikimedia.org with the link to the tweet. We will get back to you in the next 24 hours. If your need is more urgent than that, please say so in the email and add URGENT to the subject line. You may also direct message @jeffelder with the link to the tweet.
  • To request a tweet: If you want us to tweet something from the Foundation's verified Twitter accounts, please email socialmedia-internal(_AT_)wikimedia.org with the language you want tweeted and a link to include. We will get back to you in the next 24 hours. If your need is more urgent than that, please say so in the email and add URGENT to the subject line.
  • To request a Facebook post to the verified Wikipedia page: Please email socialmedia-internal(_AT_)wikimedia.org with either the language and link you want posted, or the link to a Facebook post on another post that you want shared, and the audience to target. We will get back to you in the next 24 hours. If your need is more urgent than that, please say so in the email and add URGENT to the subject line. You may also request the post in the join Facebook group. (Request access at the group page.) Requesting a post here also informs other Facebook users in the movement of your need.
  • To post a photo: Send the link to a photo on Wikimedia Commons that is licensed public domain or CC0 to socialmedia-internal(_AT_)wikimedia.org, or have the photographer email permission to post their work.

Note: General interest posts about Wikipedia content and Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia Foundation news are welcome and encouraged. The social accounts are not a venue for advancing personal pet projects. Please keep our global audience in mind.
