This is a central page to request permissions (sysop status, bureaucrat status) on one of the Wikimedia projects, where no local means exist to do so yet. If your Wikipedia has a requests for adminship page, please use that. If not, use this page.

Requests for adminship

I would like to become a sysop for the Greek el.wikipedia.org. This is in bad need of work for almost the entire project. My previous attempts to obtain sysop rights through the intlwiki-l list (now defunt) were largely ignored. Please help. el:User:ank

I am applying for the 'el' section, forgive my naiveness, and thank you for pointing to the right page.

I think the Greek version is quite a mess for the moment. The frontpage contains errors, plus a link for downloading (illegally) a dictionary application. There are a lot of empty or badly copy-pasted articles. I looked in 'special relativity' and found the promotional of a book on Einstein. We need to motivate Greek users to write complete and accurate articles.

I think this is the right place if you are willing to be sysop on the greek wikipedia. Are they any other sysops here ? Did you have a vote for you perhaps ? Or may any sysop over there tell us if that is ok for you to be one ?

Incidently...there are no embassador for that wiki since Optim left, do you know of someone who might be interested ? thanks :-) Anthere

Gkastel: I don't know many other users, and there are quite a few of them (only 730 articles in the greek section, most of them empty). If you need an ambassador, I am Greek and speak English quite well, I 'd be happy to volunteer :)

Now, we need to know you more to have you sysop on the greek wikipedia. It is not that we do not trust you (do not take it personally :-)), but it is necessary to check. If a undesirable greek person come here to ask to be sysop, then go run your place wild, I am sure no greek editor would appreciate :-) And I am sure we would hear complaints :-) :Could you perhaps give us the direct link to your user page on the greek wikipedia ? If you are not the first sysop, you may have a page where greek people agree for one user to be named sysop ? Can you give us the name of one sysop over there, so we can just make a quick check with him that it is okay to have you sysop over there ?

It is important that you do not feel yourself untrusted, it is mostly for the protection of your wikipedia.

To Anthere: by the way, Anther comes from the the Greek word 'Anthos' which is the flower (the blossom of the flower), not from an english word as you mention on your user page. Cheers, Gkastel.

History

1. In the beginning, people would apply for sysop power by asking Brion.
2. Then someone came up with the idea of creating bureaucrat power so that certain sysops could create other sysops. The (short-lived) idea was that requests for adminship would be handled here by the group of bureaucrats.
3. A final simplification/correction/clarification of the idea was that bureaucrat powers were meant to be local to individual wikis, thus reducing the amount of meta-noise, but somebody has to create the first bureaucrat, so if your wiki does not have one, ask at Other language bugs
4. It is also proposed that we use Requests for permissions in the future. [1]
