Hide Letter-Headlines in Category-View

I administrate a small MediaWiki. When we view a category, there appear all included articles ... for every first letter an own sections. But it dont looks nice, when there are only a few articles in a category. How to switch off this letter-headlines (sections) ? Thanks, --Nyks 22:58, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

• Remark (if necessary) : not quite sure if it the good page, but difficult to figure it out with such a huge product. Maybe the answers were in some other pages. Did not find them.

1. a very small change to do for the local label of the language, visible on interwiki links:
   krèyol ayisyen =>
   kreyòl ayisyen.
   How can we change that? I am not quite sure that is possible thru a local wiki.
2. the Haitian uses symbols of latin alphabet for its letters, but not exactly as the conventional ones. Some letters are written with two symbols (as an, ch). For the alphabetic order, it is quite important and detectable on the category pages.
   Example on virtual words: instead of
   ab, an, ar, ob, on, or, it will be
   ab, ar, an, ob, or, on.
   How can we define the alphabet in a local wiki?
3. The haitian alphabet also uses some accented symbols not easy to reach thru keyboards. We saw that in other wikipedias, the edit page have on their bottom part a list of those accented symbols..
   How ca we add them for our own edit page?
4. We stopped to upload images when we saw available equivalent images on the commons site. Nevertheless, names of those images are in English.
   Is it possible to add a sort of namespace table containing local names for each local wiki?
   Try to explain: If a local wiki wants an image, the program checks first in the local wiki. If it is not found, it requests to the common wiki. If the image is not found, the common wiki can check in its namespace representing the local wiki if the name of this image is there.
   Example: in the article Ayiti on ht wiki, we could insert the image AyitiAnplasman.png. This image does not exist in ht wiki and does not exist neither in the common wiki, but the namespace ht in commons contains a link AyitiAnplasman.png => Haiti Location.png. Or a link AyitiAnplasman.png => <internal mediawiki id for image>. This id used by all languages as Haiti Location.png => <internal mediawiki id for image>.

Interpretation of Criteria

I am currently in a dispute that is undergoing mediation. The process has bogged down over the interpretation of criteria. Specifically, [WP:BLP] states Negative information related to a person's notability should be mentioned if solidly verifiable, e.g. plagiarism by an artist, fraud by a scientist, doping use by a sports person, etc. Remember that verifiability requires direct evidence from reliable sources regarding the subject of the article specifically. Beware of claims that rely on guilt by association, or other generalizations. To me this says that you cannot place information in an article about a living person if it infers guilt by association, ie. if it links two people so that the reader may be lead to assume that information that he has about one person will apply to the other. My opponent won't acknowledge this.

There used to be a section on guilt by association in the Wikipedia:Verifiability [WP:V] guideline, but it was removed a month ago. I cannot find a reason for its removal. You can read it here [2].

Can you bad where http://www.crossmarketedmessageboards.com/0/1/meta.wikimedia/5/w/index.php?title=Main_Page is coming from? Looks like he might be fetching things live from Wikimedia. Even if it's not, it would be safe to ban it anyways. I think there's a separate page to post this, but I can't find it right now. I'll find it soon. -- WB 20:56, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Just wondering, should I use Brittish or American spelling? And could you post somewhere obvious which one people should use? I don't know how many incongruencies are occurring because of it... (example: Jail and Gaol, Zero and Zed, etc.) Andrew Hudson, Aug. 23 2005

Interwiki of Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia

Can someone fix problem whit interwiki of this Wikipedia? Serbo-Croatian is Srpskohrvatski on Latin or Српскохрватски on Cyrillic. I suppose that name Srpskohrvatski/Српскохрватски is to long. Can you put Srpskoхрватски or Српскоhrvatski? Thank you. --Pokrajac 23:10, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Termites

I have conscientiously contributes articles on "Magnetosphere" and "Aurora" (my own field as physicist, one on which I have larger web sites in my own domain www.phy6.org) and find they are beeing degraded by people who seem to have other motives. They add no information, but remove it, and they undo what I worked to create.

If Wikipedia wants people to invest serious effort, it better limit such sniping. I do get critical comments on my sites, too, reply to them and often make changes. But just chopping away for what seems to someone an esthetic or stylistic reason is the Midas touch in reverse, gold into lead. Do you want me to invest time in Wikipedia?

Actually, I am close to giving up on Wikipedia: you invest serious work and then termintes come and nibble it away. I have my own very thorough exposition of the magnetosphere, and the reason I linked to it was, because THERE I can maintain what I wrote, with no termites. Look it up: if you find anything wrong or misleading let ME know, and I myself will change or not.

  I also get a lot of e-mail about the magnetosphere. A remarkable number of people ask about whether Apollo was a hoax (because of the radiation belt), and what will happen to humanity when the magnetic polarity reverses, etc. This is why I addressed thse concerns in a section under "Magnetosphere." An important purpose of this web site, I thought, is to provide what the public asks for

Please, therefore, put everything back. Links, public concens, other things I have not noted. An encyclopaedia site should not be a camel designed by a committee.

• Contact person: well, I'll do (commons:User:pfctdayelise/pfctdayelise). Note: this is my own opinion, and maybe Commoners will not appreciate me advertising in this way, but I feel it's necessary.
• How many helpers needed (if necessary): Dozens. Many. Can't have too many.
• Qualification of helpers (if necessary): Multilingual highly valued, but we just need people. Our deletion requests routinely stretch back to two months. It's tedious but important. Our "speedy" deletion is a mockery of the term. We need real translations of pages other than the main page, so that people can really migrate their image uploads to the Commons without feeling it's English dominated. Also, the more that we can involve local project users the better communication there will be between them and Commons, and that can only be a good thing.

• Remark (if necessary): I'm not too sure anyone reads this, but let's give it a try... Commons suffers from a lack of volunteers with dedication to the Commons for tasks including translation, deletion (we need admins, especially multilingual ones), image license/source-checking, category maintenance, gallery maintenance, and pretty much anything else you can think of that isn't as much fun as uploading images or Featured pictures. I don know what actually happen, but i just cannot open MS:wikipediapage at location of Malaysia, 3 August 2006 morning. Now i am lost contact for others wikipedian of MS:wikipedia becouse normally we keep contact via MS:wikipedia. May i know what should i do and what actually happen?
