For your info

Never wanting to do a job twice, I've created a basic starting guide for new internal wikis - Help:Setting up an internal wiki.

If anyone needs one set up, they can be pointed to that, for details.

Can you figure where to link it from, for help purposes too?

Best,

I have also edited it a bit to make it less enwiki arbcom centric. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 02:05, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Looks like you've desysopped me today :)

Hello Bastique, I'd like to thank you very much for removing sysop rights from my account on the Polish-language Wikipedia today. The problem is, the plwiki ArbCom has no right to decide about desysopping admins. Cheers, odder 09:00, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually, that is part of ArbCom's job. Majorly (talk) 10:47, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you could suggest some elements for better aproval for my request, do not hesitate :-)

All things allright, i've been reconducted for 3 months. ;-) --ht:user:masterches
Excellent. I'm pleased to see that you are still active there, and will support your continued temporary adminship until a community can build long enough to come to some permanent solution. Cary. Cary Bass demandez 16:19, 10 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

OTRS access

Hi,

I'm not sure I'm in the right place to ask, but I can't find any better :)

I'm (temporary) admin of ru.wikibooks.org. As part of my admin job I need to solve copyright issues. There's a lot of texts wich are derived (mostly translated) from other sources in wikibooks, and sometimes these sources are not free or GFDL-incompatible. So I need to contact to original authors for permissions to distribute these derivatives under GFDL and sometimes it is easier for the authors to send a letter to permissions@ than post some GFDL message on their site. So I'd like to get some access to permissions@ (and maybe permissions-commons@) address. Is it possible with my current admin status?

Ilya Voyager 09:43, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, please make your request at OTRS/volunteering. If you know any Russian OTRS members it is good to get their recommendation there as well. Hope this helps! Cary Bass demandez 15:55, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Korean OTRS

ORTS for Korean Wikipedia is not yet made, would you create one? --Ryuch 08:52, 19 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi! We need to do three things. Firstly we need to have at least two Korean Administrators, who are willing to keep up with OTRS, post to OTRS/volunteering and provide a bit of information, as well as send us separate emails. Secondly we need to set up the email address, and queue. Thirdly, you should add the email address to contact pages on the Korean Wikipedia so that you will have people emailing you! Azeri Wikipedia : Vusal1981

Have a nice day. Vusal goes beyond the limit of vandalism on wikipedia. Vusal created pages above 10.000 empty articles. See; *http://az.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Akif_C%C9%99f%C9%99rov&action=history

At the same time; Vusal here http://az.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%C4%B0stifad%C9%99%C3%A7i_m%C3%BCzakir%C9%99si:Sabir&curid=54302&diff=246714&oldid=246693 and here http://az.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%C4%B0stifad%C9%99%C3%A7i_m%C3%BCzakir%C9%99si:Sabir&curid=54302&diff=246714&oldid=246693 deletes the IP user's sign from the welcome message and put his own sign. Vusal's target is to show his name all the pages. Vusal owns the articles on wikipedia. Here he warns me because of the delete warning that I put (for licence and source), http://az.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%C4%B0stifad%C9%99%C3%A7i_m%C3%BCzakir%C9%99si:Uannis&diff=188055&oldid=187676 here] he gets angry for the deletin warning on the articles that created by him and contains only one word and he wants me not to do this, here he derides me and he says to me Your future is very clear., here he menaces me to be blocked, here he says to me stupid, here he says to me vandal, here he says to me liar, here he says to me Armenian because, Azerbeijani people don't like Armenians because of Nagorno-Karabakh, here he says to me What do you imagine you are?, here he blames me that I write his name is in a discussion.

And Vusal, here returns to the bad version that contains aspersion to Armenian people. --Uannis 11:20, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

wm2009 wiki

Hey Cary. Sorry to bother you, is it possible for me to get the +sysop on the wikimania2009 wiki so I can help along? I'm currently a enwiki and also a wikimania2008 sysop. Thanks! — E talk 07:46, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

E, I'm of the impression that you rarely if ever perform admin actions at the wm2008 wiki. Spend a few weeks deleting some of these nonsense pages on there, and we'll reconsider it then. :) Cary Bass demandez 00:06, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please can you make me a sysop there, so that I can help with cleaning-up of vandalism, and doing some MediaWiki edits?? I'll help out with things like the title blacklist etc, if you want! Hope this helps!! Thanks, AP aka --Kelsington 09:33, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Maybe we should wait until we actually need this and we know who exactly will be working with Wikimania before we annoy Bastique to +sysop everyone. :P Cbrown1023 talk 22:18, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

WikiMedia Labs

Hello there, I had an account on this test wiki, but I unfortunately forgot its password :P so I have created a new account here and I want to merge all of my accounts by SUL, but because I forgot my password on the test wiki I can't unify it with my main accounts, therefore I am asking that you let me usurp my account account on the test wiki and then block it as I forgot my password to it and then rename this account to Mifter. I have placed a page on the En Wikipedia here to verify that it actually is me. I am asking you here because on your talk page it says to refer all requests to you on your meta page. Thanks in advance, --Mifter 19:39, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm guessing that you're getting ready to place that page on enwiki... because atm it doesn't exist. Cary Bass demandez 19:47, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm testing FlaggedRevs--intended for Indonesian community, and developing help page of this article validation (see: id:Help:FlaggedRevs). Plea

Dear Bastique,

Excuse me if I interfere in a matter that does not concern me personally, but as a member of the Swedish Wikipedia community, I feel I have the duty to voice my disenchantment when the actions of a sysop is threatening to alienate a valuable contributor of our community. You know the basic facts of the case, and I will not reiterate them. Let me just make a few additions.

To begin with, in his message to sv:Islander, en:Islander states that as a matter of policy, he as a sysop has precedence. However, if you actually check the edit history of that policy, you will find that it was formulated on May 29.

Clearly aware of this recent change to policy (since he edited on that page on June 1), en:Islander asks User:Giddy for advice how to approach Islander, and the conversation shows that en:Islander has known about sv:Islander since February, that is a month after en:Islander usurped the account on English Wikipedia. Shortly afterwards, Giddy archives the discussion and leaves no trace on the userpage that this discussion has taken place.

To me, it looks like en:Islander is trying to game the system in his favor and that he has abused his status has administrator at English Wikipedia in order to set a precedent on a policy that has not yet been fixed. This is not the way we do things on Wikipedia.

I apologize if I have uttered any harsh words in various forums, but this is the first time I learned about this I feel that it is my duty to speak up. Sincerely, --Bothnia 01:38, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I emailed both users yesterday, in hopes that we can come to a resolution. I understand the situation fairly well, and I believe that it can be resolved amicably. However, accusations of "gaming the system" will not help the situation and I urge you to have faith that things will be treated fairly. It might appear that way to you, but it does not mean it's his intent. Cary Bass demandez 15:55, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I hope you are right, after what I have been through since yesterday, I have my doubts and will pull out for the time being. Since I started editing on Wikipedia two years ago, I have become acutely aware of the fact that ordinary users are routinely treated brusquely by sysops. All I have tried to do was to speak up on behalf of a member of our community, and I have effectively been told to shut up or else be blocked. On Swedish Wikipedia, administrators at least have to renew their sysop status on a yearly basis, but on English language Wikipedia it is virtually impossible to argue with an admin, which is why I have more or less given up editing on English language Wikipedia about a year ago. That's it. Good luck with the meditation, I hope you will at least consider the information I pasted above.--Bothnia 19:02, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Some Dutch problems

Sr. D. Cary Bastique: I am very sorry Sir to have to bother you, but unfortunately from Holland some stalking (sysop)people there keep being blaming and shaming me about nothing serious, as I already informed mrs. Gardner here, after asking for Help on the now locked desk .... They do proceed to metawiki here into the page of talk:Vandalism reports second part, so I feel no other way than to inform you too. Though feeling provoked but again apologizing, I 'll thank you in advance for your attention. Respectfully yours, I remain D.A. Borgdorff = IP 86.83.155.44 20:15, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

This is an issue between you and the nlwiki community, which is perfectly capable of dealing with this matter. Cary Bass demandez 20:51, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your fast reaction. With you, I still keep hope of dealing matters "well done". Kind regards et cetera: Borgdorff = 86.83.155.44 22:09, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm very unfortunate Sir to have to let you know that in the meantime nothing has done to solve the arisen problems, with exception of admin in Spain, but not in Holland. Sincerely: Borgdorff 86.83.155.44 01:49, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Dammit 23:43, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Sir Cary Bastique, apparently you'd not want to reply yourself, and on my age I've never had chats or something like about an important scientific reference. If bias is more prominent than open discussion, I do have this comprehension enough to understand what matters are involved. I'd state only feel obliged to properly inform you of some controverses involved, that I'll have to effectively proper handled another way though. I'm unfortunately sorry to have your time disturbed. Question re: the basis for Jimmy's authority

Hi Cary - could you, or somebody else from the WMF, weigh in on this question? Thanks, Sarcasticidealist 16:19, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I would expect that Jimmy would be the appropriate person to respond to that question. Cary Bass demandez 15:36, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I dropped a note on his enwiki talk page a few days ago, so hopefully he will have a look at our discussions at some point, because I think that his involvement would be valuable. But even apart from the value of his involvement, there's a question that needs answering: is Jimmy's authority on enwiki a Foundation-imposed thing or a thing for the community to decide? Absent any declaration otherwise from somebody at the WMF, it seems to be the view of the enwiki community that Jimmy's authority is a community matter. If it isn't, somebody from the WMF should weigh in pretty quick. Sarcasticidealist 16:23, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Again, Jimmy is the founder and on the Foundation board. He's perfectly able to answer this question himself, and would be the appropriate one to provide the answer. Furthermore, I don't understand what the rush is, or why you've sought the need to bring this matter to Meta. Cary Bass demandez 16:31, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
