Oi Redux. Obrigado. -- Slade pt.wp 16:34, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

-- Slade pt.wp 17:47, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
-- Slade pt.wp 19:20, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
-- Slade pt.wp 04:08, 6 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

-- Slade pt.wp 15:43, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oversight

I corrected the oversight header, so people won't make the mistake of posting the request there. While I don't the arbcom will expand it soon, perhaps being a Bureaucrat might help. I certainly trust you enough to reckognize obvious privacy violations, along with user requests to remove clear libel.Voice-of-All 23:05, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Translation combination boxes

The following text was copied from Meta:Babel#Translation_combination_boxes. As an active translator, it may be of any interest to you:

Hi, Sabine worked on new boxes for translators. They aim at giving information about translation combination: say, I can translate from English to French, from Italian to Spanish, and so on. It would help us to know who can translate what, in what, to streamline the translation process. The boxes do not provide information about your level (wether you are a professional translator or not, for example); you may write something about this point in your user page (very useful as well). A few boxes are available, be bold and create those you need :) Be aware we use ISO 639-3 codes for languages (fra and not fr, eng and not en, ...).

Please see "Translator in the following language combinations" and pick up templates for your user page!
This message was pasted on several User talk pages of active translators.

Thank you :)

1st e-mail from Shadi from Morocco

Dear Redux,

I am very glad to come across your Wikimedia page this afternoon . I am absolutely amazed that you have a good command of several languages. As I have an excellent command of many foreign languages, I guess you and I can cooperate in this field and exchange views and experience. I will tell you more about myself and my job in my next reply which I will certainly send you as soon as I get an answer for this e-mail. Could you please write soon. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
   Yours sincerly,

Your interest in wikimedia foundation website

Hi, I am working as its editor and caring for translation mainly. I wonder to know if you are interesting in translation, we are doing here on meta, Translation requests/WMF and other related pages. We are doing translation on meta, so translators needn't have an account on the website in general.

I am sorry to say that I hardly think you of my team for now, since I think I haven't seen you on those pages; I found you at some talks related to translations. You edited as anons in the past perhaps?

Oi Redux, muitíssimo obrigada por responder meu observações! (sorry, using a vocabulary I can do only single sentence, hope it is not offensively incorrect)

Thank you for your understanding and for your polite answers. I do not how to explain it as am fearing not to offend you. Anyways I'll try - you are a good candidate, and your knowledge in so many languages will only be of help. I wish we had more candidates to select from. Hopefully a warning from a fellow editor with good faith might help you to avoid the cultural bias we all carry without even realizing it. Sometimes we are so far apart to understand each other, and so close when it comes to harm each other.

Despite my objections I will gladly support you in your steward career. Drop me a note if you think I might be of any help. Abraços! Goldie ± (talk) 16:34, 14 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oversight for two pages at Portuguese Wikisource

Obrigado. 555 03:13, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the clarification! I was in such a rush earlier that I didn't realize the bot's page was outdated, and in my hurry I didn't double-check with the actual votes (mine included!) as I should have. Admin concerns on EN Wikipedia

Hi, I had some trouble on the English Wikipedia which resulted in the issuance of a block for 72 hours. Within 10 minutes the block was lifted, but I am concerned about the conduct related to the incident. Would you please review w:User_talk:Alan.ca/block on my talk page and comment? Please respond on my talk page as I am not a regular visitor to this meta project. Thanks. Alan.ca 06:15, 25 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

10 minutes? More like an hour. Note that the block was endorsed by five people - three (including blocking admin) uninvolved - and you were only unblocked conditionally. Furthermore at least SEVEN admins agreed your conduct was inappropriate, and this too is inappropriate, as a violation of his self-probation agreement for unblocking. Chacor 14:06, 25 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • As you can see, Chacor is still monitoring my contributions. I read the RfC instructions, but it states that two users must attempt to contact the user involved. In my case, the offense was against me only. How do I proceed given these circumstances? Alan.ca 14:25, 25 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm hardly monitoring your contribs, stop making false accusations. Even then, there is no policy about viewing others' contribs. I only came here because I have your talk page watched (I've had it watched since you blanked my 3RR warning about Hurricane Katrina in early December) and saw Redux post to it. -- Slade 16:50, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Need help with admin

Hi, i would like to ask to review the actions and contributions of user:Jayjg he frequently makes controversial edits which is his right but then deals with resulting edit wars in a disruptive and abusive manner. If his controversial edits get reverted he will attempt to harass editors who reverting. He treats his admin priviliges as if they meant he is above every and any rule or policy. He will deal with any opposing POV with brute force, auto reverting, blocking instead of discussion. He violates the following guide on adminship:

"Adminship is not diplomatic immunity Every administrator must keep in mind that admins are servants of Wikipedia as a whole. This means that all policies apply to admins just as they do to any user. Admins can be blocked, stripped of admin powers, or banned. Admins must follow all Wikipedia policies, such as the three-revert rule, and uphold consensus and a neutral point of view." I ask you to keep a close eye on him and prevent any future abuse and edit warring. Especially abusive edit warring using administrative tools provided to him for fighting vandals, not POV battles. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by CJHooker (talk)

Stewards are not Wikimedia "cops", we are functionaries (as stated in the Steward policy). I assume whatever issue here is taking place on enwiki, so this would need to be resolved on enwiki. Thank you. Redux 10:15, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikibooks:Arbitration/Panic2k4 vs. SBJohnny

Hello Redux! I am b:User:Whiteknight from en.wikibooks, and was one of the admins involved in the disciplinary action against b:User:Panic. I cannot read Panic's post above, but I can imagine what the general idea of it is. I will not bore you with all the little details of the case, and there are many details, but I can tell you that this was not an abuse of power, nor a violation of policy. Over the course of several months, Panic has violated the b:Wikibooks:Be civil policy on numerous occasions, and has been accused of harassing multiple users. A general community consensus on the matter was reached, and panic was subsequently blocked from editing. An arbitration hearing was started by b:User:Robert Horning, but Robert has been absent for some time now and did not complete the arbitration. In agreement with several other active admins, and consensus from the wikibooks community, Panic is going to be blocked again from editing wikibooks.
This process has been a long and difficult one for en.wikibooks, and I ask that this issue not be made bigger or worse then it already is. If you have any questions, please leave them on my user talk page, or on my en.wikibooks talk page. --Whiteknight 14:07, 1 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Just to inform Redux that I'm aware of this last post and still wish his intervention, I have informed those involved that I had requested meta intervention, I must point out that several of the statements above by User:Whiteknight are incorrect and can be easily checked out. Panic (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4)
I appreciate the situation, but Stewards are not Wikimedia cops. We do not overturn community process and community decisions. There are situations in which we might intervene to do emergency desysopping, but this situation would call for overriding community process, which we do not do. Besides, it seems to me, by reviewing the links provided, that Panic was not the victim of the arbitrary actions of a single admin in a small project (which could, if it was the case, result in an emergency intervention), but rather there seems to have been a process, with the involvement of multiple members of the community. I have no authority to override them all and render a different outcome at this point. Redux 12:37, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Can you point me out how to proceed, I see the actions taken against my account as unfair and unjustified and there is no clear way to recur from the decision.
I will now be forced to contest 2 admins (I have now been blocked for 6 moths after unlawful termination of an arbitration on the 2 weeks block, since the rules I agreed upon were changed before it ended), a impartial decision by the Wikibooks community would be almost impossible now.
I know this is having is toll on the community, but to be consistent I will, as soon as you indicate how I should proceed, contest the new block on Wikibooks, what I ask is not much, I need an fair analysis of the actions performed on my account by now 2 administrators and to understand what I did wrong if I'm deserving of disciplinary action, as it stands I don't even know what I have done wrong or how I could have avoided it, that is, aside for keeping my "mouth" closed.
Anyway I must point out that none of the blocks were to prevent me from causing havoc, I'm not a vandal and I have been productive on the community, I have even engaged myself on the structural side of it, it is my good intentions and hopes for the community that still keep me fighting for what I think as right. Panic (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4) 2/2/2007
If the decision is final, then you will have to abide by it. The only person empowered to revert a decision made in arbitration is Jimbo Wales. You might try e-mailing him, but I should caution you that the chances that he would actually overturn the local decision are slim at best. You best chance is to petition the local admins (even if blocked, you should still be able to edit your own talk page) and ask for a review by previously uninvolved admins. Redux 19:47, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
How can I check if the decision is final? there is no policy that validates the decision (besides personal judgment, which I contest) and admins on the project aren't selected by the level of involvement or knowledge or even good morals, they are selected primarily as interested and active users willing or in need to perform administrative tasks, more so, as older administrator were pruned out of the project due to the application of a new policy that required admins to perform a minimum of tasks to keep the flag (that alone is problematic and have caused some stress on the community and older users, as they were not called to the discussion and found it as a fait accompli). Finding some with capability of being impartial or even willing to support a discussion/reassessment of another admin decision (let alone several) is a near impossible task, involving others will probably have negative results has seems to have happened to Rob.
The attempt for arbitration resulted from one admin attempt to provide a solution (and in agreement with the involved parts) to my first (and first in the project) request to be unblocked and that attempt failed because the admin is MIA (probably because he faced so many problems in establishing the procedure). http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.org.wikimedia.textbook/957 (note some comments do contain misinformation)
Attempting another request for unblocking can be interpreted as was the last time as putting the community on the spot, I will wait for any input you can provide, but failing that, I see it as the only solution, that and attempt to send an e-mail Jimbo Wales, but any intervention from an "outsider" and so prominent figure will only place even more stress on the community, I'm torn in this, this decision will be placing my interests and what I think is right over what is best for the community even if I think this is a very important, not only to me, but to establish clear rights to any other user.
I don't contest the right of an admin to block a user I only object on the way it is being used and the pedagogic usefulness of the action performed on the existing framework, I have learned nothing as I still don't see any of my actions worthy of such treatment. Panic (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4) 2/2/2007
  • reset

b:User:Robert Horning is back and he seems also to agree that the steps taken on the attempted arbitration were indeed abusive, he has left a message on my talk page, I will try to analise what are community feelings about events, I told him that I have been speaking to you. Panic (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4) 3/2/2007

Some other users (some administrators) have also expressed their discontentment with the solution, this will in the end causes a split on the community even if after the last block (6 moths) an impartial and from the outside of the project arbitration/analysis would be most useful, please consider at least examining the situation and provide a comment if and when you fill it would help the situation. I found out that Wikibooks also have stewards and sent a mail to one of them. (Jimbo is also listed as a steward of the project but his direct intervention would indeed be overkill at present) Panic (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4) 4/2/2007

Indeed a split has occurred, the attempt to pass a sentence using the overturned arbitration was reverted, I'm now under a 2 week block, even if I don't agree with it I will let matters settle down before asking a reassessment of the situation. Are you monitoring, taken an interest on the events? Panic (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4) 6/2/2007

I'm aware of the situation, yes. But again, I'm not "overseeing" it. Redux 18:23, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Please intervene, This is unacceptable, after taking a 20 day block expecting people to come to senses as requested by some administrator as a way to diffuse the situation I found my self indefinitely blocked by the administrator I contest is abusing the block policy from the start. (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4) 19/2/2007 )
The block showing in the log is 2 weeks long, not indefinite. You are arguing abuse of the tools by one administrator, and I see that earlier today you've placed the standard template on your talk page to request review of the block and that you be unblocked. This will be looked into by another administrator. Again, I do not have the authority to intervene in a project's administrative community where there are more than one administrators active, a system in place for conflict resolution and there is no community consensus that an administrator is abusing the tools and should be "dealt with" by a Steward. If the rest of the community, or the rest of the project's administrators agree with SBJohnny's actions, there is simply nothing to be done about it, and if they don't, or if there is enough of a controversy to go on, then the situation will be discussed and addressed locally, by the local community, and there would be no grounds for a Steward to intervene, unless if to carry out a decision made in the course of the discussions. Redux 13:26, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I haven't been using any other wikimedia projects and all my contributions have been done on Wikibooks, I have knowledge only about that projects policies and guidelines (mostly are adapted from wikipedia) but it somehow doesn't feel right it's like, lets say exposing a corrupt cop and hope that a consensus is formed by the other cops to act against his fellow, taking into consideration the way people get administrative flags on the project, what you are saying is that if a administrator does act in a rash way against a "unknown" user we will probably never hear about it, because he would be really crazy for speaking out. This doesn't make any sense to me, if contesting any wrong doing is so impossible (if not done by a person with the same visibility or involvement) and some "luck", how can justice be provided to users. In this case we have several administrator working in similar way to a corporation and validating each others wrong decisions, the attempt to take over the arbitration is a clear example, any other user steeping out of line will only be inviting troubles (and we now see examples of it on this case). (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4) 19/2/2007 )
Ordinarily, smaller communities tend to have a lot less problems with this kind of thing. Remember, There is only a cabal if you want there to be one. Redux 18:40, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • reset

Yup as I said, the problem only exists if it is created, no one can object to that... But that gives the target user that raises his voice the perception of being unwilling to play along with others, and further validates the abuser. In a setup like wikipedia that wouldn't be a problem a user could just recreate an account and go along or just stop participating, in wikibooks that option is more difficult to take, books are long works and authors (if the users is an author) take personal and even legal responsibility for the authored works, they don't have control of the work per se, but have a long relation to it in terms of effort and time, so dropping an account is no easy task if the users is indeed productive, but in any case a user should have the right to protect his honor and good name from attacks. (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4) 19/2/2007 )

Are you still fallowing the problem, I'm not requesting that you take any action but as an outsider, you views on community consensus and the breaking of actual policies can and should help, things can only get worse if no one "above" the problem, does indeed take measures. ([see also] (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4) 28/2/2007)

Note also that I now have an indefinite block and that the request for unblock was answered by the first blocking administrator, the last block is based on majority vote (clearly against policy). (en.Wikibooks b:User:Panic2k4) 1/3/2007)

I am back for ur help

Hi Redux! it's been quite long since i've asked for your help. Here i am again, asking your help. As you may know i am working on Dhivehi Wikimedia projects, I've recently started working on Dhivehi Wiktionary after evolving the Dhivehi Wikipedia with a new main page and many New things. In Dhivehi Wiktionary When we write something it is not in the font i want it to be. In wikipedia it is set to be viewed in a font called Faruma. Can you help on this matter. Thanks!!

Clave incorrecta

Hola, Redux!

Redux 18:30, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Usernames on meta

Hi, I originally posted this for Rdsmith but he appears to be less active than I had thought. I was wondering if it is possible to change my username here to User:Christopher Parham. Since this account has few edits, ordinarily I would not request such, but it is impossible to create that account as a new account since it is too similar to my existing one. Thanks. Looks like Dan already took care of it.  :-) Cheers, Redux 11:41, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Something I want to know...

Hi Redux, I am the only local Bureaucrat in the Dhivehi Wiki pedi, lang. code (dv). Can I vote for a nomination taking place? It seems to me that it is unfair for a bureaucrat to vote. By the way, which percentage of the community's approval does it need for a user to have a bureaucreat access.

Thanks for ur time, Pal!!

URGENT matter on Dhivehi Wikipedia

Hello,

These are the Users with the Sysop and Bureaucratship In our Dhivehi Wikipedia, (dv.wikipedia.org)

  • Deviathan ‏(Bureaucrat, Sysop)
  • Glacious ‏(Bureaucrat, Sysop)
  • LeX ‏(Sysop)
  • Oblivious ‏(Sysop)

But as I checked the recent changes i noticed that a User named Shanel has deleted a page named MediaWiki talk:Userlevels-group-edit. As far as i know, only a user with adminship can delete pages. So i checked User List page to make sure if he have adminship. I also have noted that the user have been created on this same day. I checked User right log to see if Deviathan have given him adminship. But there were no recent logs.

I am blocking this user from making furthe edits to the wiki until we find the problem. Even our policy on giving adminship is by taking a local voting session.

Please check out this matter.

Also please check this link!! URGENT!!

Bouncing mail on otrs-en-l?

Hi Redux. Your mailbox appears to be full, so messages from the otrs-en-l list have been bouncing for a few days now. As a result, I am setting you to "nomail" on that list until we can solve this problem. Please let me know if you need any further details or assistance. - jredmond 15:30, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, thanks. I'm changing my e-mail for Wikimedia-related stuff. This is not the first time my current provider does that (the mailbox is not full, but it acts as if it was). I'm going to Gmail. I'll be changing it on all the lists I'm currently subscribing to. I expect this will not happen again. Sorry for the inconvenience. Redux 21:51, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
