Budget stuff

Hey - nice work on organizing this. :) I consider the budget passed today as a second beta budget, the next one will be a full version and I'd like your help beforehand in putting it together (need to start work on this early in March).

Some notes: We did not have enough money for a reserve this time (other than just saying that anything we take in that is over $75K is the reserve), but all the board members present indicated that this is very important and should be a budget item in the next budget. Your idea of 3 months' operations expenses is the standard recommended amount by GAAP for non-profits, so that is what I'm going to push for but it will likely not be that large until the end of the year. My proposed budget had $20K for special projects (such as outreach, WikiReaders, yada yada, Mother Teresa-type stuff, etc), but that was tied to being half of the Lounsbery grant. In the meeting I found out that that money was marked for 'physical expenses during quarter 1 2005', which wiped the special projects item (the $0 item). Once again, great work and I look forward to working with you. --Daniel Mayer 06:22, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

PS - If you are interested, IRC is a good place for us to work together. #wikimedia is the logical choice so long as it stays fairly quite. I'd also like us to eventually form a real finance committee with at least one board member being an active participant (Anthere seems to be obvious choice). A way to logically coordinate what is put on meta and what goes on the foundation wiki also needs to be worked out. We also need to draft a contract for Brion and maybe for Chad. Sensitive stuff like contract development may need to happen on the grants wiki. --Daniel Mayer

Any help, esp on the detail pages, would be greatly appreciated. :) --Daniel Mayer 00:04, 19 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Beck Foundation

Hello SJ, I noticed you changed the link to "beck foundation" on wikimediafoundation:Benefactors#October_2004. Could you change the text for that link to "John and Frances Beck Foundation" (if that is correct). The URL you give (http://www.thebeckfoundation.org) doesn't seem to work right now; Google last cached it on July 202005. The contact information on that cached page is given as:

Nefles, et al

Hi Samuel, I did think to go to Wikimania before I was informed I was appointed to a new position, in Normandy, from Sept. 1st. So that I spent my time packing my stuff and moving to Lisieux, where I'll be living in a few days. I'm fine, I think - normal people never are totally sure they're fine, right ? The best they can do is to hope they're fine. So, I hope I'm fine, even though I could be depressed too :) I'm really curious to know what you've kept aside for me. I still hope I get enough time to visit New-York next fall, but this new position, it could be later again. Take care, villy 09:41, 25 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Survey

Hi Samuel, very good to have met you in person. Could we do the survey talk in 3 or 4 weeks from now? I'm not quite well now, and knowing myself I will want to follow-up on a meeting asap. Also I'm changing places in ten days, going to live together with my girlfriend, so busy organising things. Cheers, Erik Zachte 01:09, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

By coincidence I stumbled upon the aforementioned page almost a year after you created it. After fixing a link I noticed that the info on that page is not current at all, and I was wondering if you could provide me with how you came up with some of the numbers that are on that page so that I may be consistent with a greatly overdue update. If you prefer to do it yourself... no problem, just trying to be useful. --Robert Harrison 06:35, 24 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Usability

Hello sj,

first of all, congratulations for successfull application for Wikimania 2006!

I removed your request to merge the "Usability" page with the "Usability design group". I intend the Usability page to contain pointers to the different efforts to improve the usability of the Wikimedia projects, whereas the Usability design group seems to be a group of people interested in some aspects of it, similar to the WikiProject Usability on the English Wikipedia.

Anyway, you might be interested in this report on finding information in the German Wikipedia: http://www.openusability.org/reports/view.php?group_id=109&repid=69

Hello Samuel,
I just wanted to let you know how much pain I've had to draft a decent letter/email in English announcing the creation of Wikipen. I don't know if I succeeded but at least, it is there : http://en.wikipen.org/wiki/User:Aurevilly/Presentation_letter Since I dont want to be ridiculous as to sent such letter announcing a literary project, full of spelling mistakes and such, could you be as nice as making some necessary copy/edits ? FYI, when that letter is done, it is expected to be sent (email or snail mail I don't know yet, to entities that I've began to list at http://en.wikipen.org/wiki/Wikipen:Let_them_know Anyhow, thanks for any help you can provide. Re: Wikimania chat

Thanks Samuel, though I'm afraid this weekend is out for me as I think I've a face to face meeting in London for Wikimedia UK, and then a day of work in the north of England the next morning. I'd say between that, a meeting is out, but I'll try to stay on top of developments (assuming my ISP won't cut out on me again like last week, grr..) All the best with it all :-) Cormaggio @ 22:19, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Small-project notes

Hi Samuel, I included the somewhat lengthy address to help people find me more easily. After all, don't we all know a few people who live outside the Universe? :^P

The small-project notes (I've gotta think of a good name for it) sounds like an interesting idea, but what would it take to publish such a review? Would it just be a summary of Wikimedia News and similar pages, or would I be in charge of nagging ambassadors for information on a regular basis? :^) Right now I'm quite busy with schoolwork, but maybe this weekend or next week, I'll be able to look into your proposal. I know English, Spanish, and Vietnamese to varying degrees... I'm not sure how many of the smaller languages use one of those languages as a lingua franca, but hopefully that'd be enough.

If I decide to take on this project, I'd probably only be good for covering the smaller Wikipedias, because I'm really not that involved with the other Wikimedia projects. (Perhaps GerardM would be a good candidate for smaller Wiktionary coverage?) If I end up covering just Wikipedia, maybe we should talk to the nice folks over at the Signpost and see if maybe we could have it syndicated there, too.

Do you know who can assure Main page is ready to translate or not? If it is you or someone who you know and can talk on irc, can you please have this person update Wikimania:Translations? In my opinion, it is an oddity an "int'l conference" has its main page in only one language and will have.

Yes! Ditto for Visas. See the related translation page.

I have a same question on Visas, too. Grobal community needs information about Visas and if we ask them to participate, Visas information should be available as well as CfP itself.

Comcom scope

It seems we're the only two discussing this, but even we are not responding rapidly enough to get this done. So I'm bringing to user talk pages, to hopefully speed things up.

  1. Coordinating communications with the press, including press releases, interviews, and inquiries.
  2. Supporting communication between the WMF and project communities.
  3. Organizing and coordinating publicity and outreach.
  4. Supporting and overseeing communication with the general public.
  5. Maintaining a Wikimedia style guide
  6. Reporting on core Wikimedia statistics
Re: #5 -- I do not believe it is possible to maintain a Wikimedia style guide, or to enforce adherence. We *might* be able to avoid problems such as are currently on the en.Wikipedia and en.Wikisource main pages, and which are currently causing friction between projects, if we address them on a case by case basis. I see this as instruction creep, and utterly unenforceable at that, no offense intended. I just don't think it would work.
Perhaps you are thinking of a more restrictive 'guide' than I am. Wikimedia needs a style guide, as does every organization. en:wp has one for encyclopedic content; we need one for foundation content. This is not instruction creep, and will not regulate most communication at all; but is needed for clarity and consistency.
The style guide on wp, and elsewhere, is restrictive.
Re: #6 -- This sounds like it already is covered by #2 above. Who would we report this to? It's a good idea; I've brought up Erik Zachte's stats to several people, but no one seems to take responsibility for that. It would be useful if we had the authority to request it. --Amgine
That may support such communication, but is used internally within the WMF, when calculating all manner of things, when communicating with the media, &c. Sj 15:32, 29 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Ex: of #4 -- "...from refdesk and vp posts to info-en requests and complaints"
I do not see what benefit there is to the last half of this sentence in a scope statement. Perhaps you could explain what I'm missing?
This is a clarification. All points here could use clarification; we can separate them out to distinguish their relative importance; I added this in particular to note that someone should be monitoring those "communications portals" and at least reporting on how visitors and guests who perceive that as the foundation's communication team are received and dealt with.
But a scope statement is not to be "clarified", but rather to limit what the responsibilities are. This doesn't seem to limit the responsibility.
  • Exs: of #6 -- ...such as estimations of project stats, membership, usage; gaps in requested information (statistics requested by researchers, policies requested by community members)
This sounds like it already is covered by #2 above.
perhaps we can clarify somewhere that this is an example of #2.
<nod> Again, however, it's an example while a scope statement is about setting limits. Perhaps we could avoid giving specific examples in the scope statement, and instead focus on just the limitations? It will always be easy outside the scope statement to explain and expand.

I'm hoping we can have something settled in advance of the next meeting, since we've been stymied by last second changes, incompleteness. - Amgine / talk meta 23:26, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'll watch for an update :-) Sj 20:24, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I'm late on updating. Other issues eating my time (like the interview) - Amgine / talk meta 22:15, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

From Geogre

Yeah, I'm not logged in on meta. I had my chance, way back, to be a more involved meta kind of guy, but the day jobs and lacking of them prevented my devoting any attention. At any rate, about a Georgia, USA meetup or association, I suppose I'm interested. I'm not very "clubbable," as Samuel Johnson would say, as the -ogre part of my name is well earned in my professional life (students flee in terror, and their cries nourish me). However, Georgia is, according to Wikipedia, the largest US state east of the Mississippi (as Yankees driving to "Flarida" can tell you, as as one did tell me: "Your state's too biiiiig" to which I said, "fly"). If there were to be a meetup in this state, a city like Macon would be most logical. It is out of the way for everyone, but it is as close to mid-way as it can be. For Atlantan's, it's about 70 minutes away (once past Atlanta). For folks in Savannah, it's about 2.5 hr away. The city has enough life in it to have places to go but not so much as to be unmappable. I'm living in the middle of nowhere in Georgia, so all places are alike remote, but the interstates love to go to Macon and Atlanta (Atlanta being the most obvious but difficult place). I'll do the tildes, but it's Geogre. 152.163.100.72 12:05, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Stewards on IRC

Hi, I am posting this to the talk page of all stewards. I am user:Walter, steward. It came to the attention that it is for users who urgently need the assistance of a steward it is not always easy to find one. I am posting this to ask your help to try to improve our service to the community.

The best hope I believe for a user to find a steward is IRC I think. There is a channel for the stewards , #wikimedia-stewards but there very few stewards there mostly if any.

So my first request is that when you are online and have time to also open the channel #wikimedia-stewards That can easy and even automatically depending of your IRC-client. Two suggestions; Gaim, you can add IRC-channels and users between your MSN, Jabber and other contacts. Very easy to use. Or chatZilla, more a real IRC program.

You can also use a webbased solution. Can also be useful when you are not at home. The IRC gateway I have setup will do its work for this purpose. http://chat.wikizine.org.

Finaly; You have your real name, your wikimedia user name and some have a totally different IRC name. I have created a new column on Stewards#Active_stewards to fill in your IRC-nick , if you are on IRC offcource. I have already filled it in for some who I know.

This request is not personally direct to you but to all stewards in general. Not everybody needs to be in that IRC -channel. If you know the channel exists that is already a very good start. Greetings, --Walter 20:48, 9 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Translation combination boxes

The following text has been copied from Meta:Babel#Translation_combination_boxes. As an active translators, it may be of any interest to you:

Hi, Sabine worked on new boxes for translators. They aim at giving information about translation combination: say, I can translate from English to French, from Italian to Spanish, and so on. It would help us to know who can translate what, in what, to streamline the translation process. The boxes do not provide information about your level (wether you are a professional translator or not, for example); you may write something about this point in your user page (very useful as well). A few boxes are available, be bold and create those you need :) Be aware we use ISO 639-3 codes for languages (fra and not fr, eng and not en, ...).

Please see "Translator in the following language combinations" and pick up templates for your user page!
This message was pasted on several User talk pages of active translators.

Thank you :)

Open-source Ticket Request System

Hi Sj,

I saw you listed on the OTRS page. I am an administrator over at Wikibooks and I was wondering if you could answer a question that i need answering. The book b:The Guide for Electronic Theses and Dissertations is not currenly licensed under the GFDL, it is copyrighted. The owners have expressed an interest in allowing the book to be used on wikibooks. However, they are not entirely sure how to do this.

Upon holding conversations with other user's and contributors to the wikimedia projects, I am under the impression that there are two key ways of making this happen. The first involves the copyright holder altering the copyright notice on their website, the other involves the OTRS system, through the permissions channel. However, i am not familiar with the OTRS system and before i can explain how it works to the copyright owner, I need to know myself.

I would recommend that they clearly state the new license on their website, preferably with a scan of a signed document that can be uploaded there and on wikibooks itself. They could also email the same image to the permissions mailing list. Sj

Would the copyright owner need to send an email directly to the OTRS channel, or could correspondance be forwarded from myself? What exactly needs to be sent in the email outlining permission? Where exactly would permission need to be sent? etc...

If you could please mull over these questions and get back to me as soon as possible, it would be greatly appreciated.

Board election question : regarding Wikiversity

Hello Samuel, since there are only a few days left until end of election I personally hope I still can see your response about this question regarding Wikiversity. Thank you very much in advance, ----Erkan Yilmaz (Wikiversity:Chat, talk) 15:21, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Samuel, thank you very much for your answer. We will think about all answers, e.g. here: Wikiversity:Vision/2009. About: "For future elections, how can we help more Wikiversity contributors get involved?": I guess that is a general problem also in the real world, that people are not interested much. For this election actually I also was like this. But I got involved when I got contacted with this virus: being involved by asking a question created in collaboration with User:Darklama + User:Cormaggio. And since then I watched the page and other pages and also spread the virus to other Wikiversity contributors. So, I'd say you must infect as many people as possible and hope for the chain reaction. ----Erkan Yilmaz (Wikiversity:Chat, talk) 16:57, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thx to User:Hillgentleman ([3]) I have revoted and you have now a better place than described here, ----Erkan Yilmaz (Wikiversity:Chat, talk) 17:44, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia Quarto

Hi Sj, is Wikimedia Quarto still active? If not, I am thinking about a reviving, how do you think of it?--Wing 08:25, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think you speak of two very critical points. The one is recruiting authors, the other is translating. How was these done in the past? On the authoring side I am thinking of invite people write articles, and I would also accept people write articles in their own language and try to find translators to do the translation for them. How do you think of this?--Wing 13:36, 4 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
It has been dormant, but I think the need for something like it across the projects has only grown over time. I would love to spend some time recruiting new authors and translators, showing them how we produced that sort of visual newsletter without too much trouble. +sj | help with translation |+

Hello there. I appreciate the history of the argument about subpages and your comment, but would you mind justifying your assertion that subpages are not appropriate in this instance? You've made the remark without explaining it. Cheers, —Anonymous DissidentTalk 04:20, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

ht.wp

Hi! We've discussed the issue with ht:User:Masterches, the only active person @ht.wp at that time and one who bot-created acticles in question. There was his agreement to revise marked articles and either to delete them or to add some valid content and/or interwiki links. See here and here. There was no problem at that time. The issue has raised from here and here. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask on my local talk page. Regards, --Volkov 06:39, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Volkov. ht:wp has active admins... were they part of this discussion as well? It would be nice to clear up the situatio none way or another. -- sj | help translate |+
If I'm not mistaken, Masterches was the only active person on ht.wp at that time. Active admins means exactly him. Another one is inactive since August 2007. --Volkov 22:47, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ok, that sounds like a fine solution (and it looks as though it is being resolved in the months since.)

Image gallery and account

sj, thanks for the message called Image gallery telling me Mihailov had marked my user page for speedy deletion. You know what? When I created that page I was under the impression I was in wikimedia commons. Don't know how I made that mistake, but I really belong there instead of in meta wiki. I don't think it's bad to have the images deleted here, since they're being used from commons. It makes most sense to me to have my username and all erased from meta wiki, but I don't know how to do that. Do you? Thanks for your attention, Hisland7 11:38, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The easy solution would be to replace your page with a link to your commons userpage; that's easy enough. And you may want to have a unified-login user account, in which case you would have an account here anyway. -- sj | help translate |+ 23:37, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note

sj, thanks for the note. Interesting information. I'll do as you say. By the way, most of those images went into an article I have worked a ton on with the username, Manray00, called Edgewater, NJ, if you'd like to see it. All the best.Hisland7 20:55, 8 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

And you may want to have a unified-login user account, in which case you would have an account here anyway. But I like your gallery! There's nothing wrong with having a gallery on meta; this is one of the most laid back wikis, where people from all projects are encouraged to share information about themselves and their work elsewhere. M. was just being energetic about avoiding wiki-spam, I think, which links across wikipedia projects are not. (If they were non-free images you were hotlinking, well... :) Cheers, -- sj | help translate |+ 23:38, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
sj, I checked my account on commons, and it appears I have a unified sign in. Maybe this is default (or did you have a hand in this???)... Thank you for your help. By the way, isn't there a way for me to communicate between talk pages without my pasting your responses here to your talk page? Cheers, Hisland7 13:43, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Alas, that's the normal way it's done today on mediawiki. Of course you might mention this annoyance on the usability project that is underway. -- sj | help translate |+ 18:00, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

New Licensing

I saw your comment about how the current system is slightly superior. Were you referring to the current licensing or the new proposed dual license? --69.224.76.66 15:42, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

(I am Blue Tie on wikipedia).

I meant that the current system of having copyleft licenses (by-sa) as the default everywhere, is slightly superior, from the perspective of increasing access to knowledge over the next few years, to a public domain license. -- sj | help translate |+ 18:26, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: language and outreach questions

Just so you know, we're not ignoring you... Alex and I are just thinking about it. ;-) A quick question though, does it just have to be "technical improvements" (as in related to technology)? Cbrown1023 talk 22:19, 20 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Not at all. most tech solutions have social equivalents and vice-versa. I think some of the most telling changes would be social. Simply stating there are core languages that should be considered equal for the purposes of a main jumping-off point for localization, or a canonical document about the Projects, would be a significant change for language issues. Or conversely, the proposed explicit statement that all strategic planning be done in English will define how groups are formed and discussions started. For outreach, wiki and social issues about where presentations (or conference papers) are shared and archived, where event calendars are posted and updated, & how requests to talk are shared are all relevant. -- sj | help translate |+ 23:11, 20 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: New languages

At the very least, you could bring up the topic at the English Wikipedia's village pump. But before any change can take place, we need to involve a very broad swath of the Wikimedia community.

We could conduct a poll similar to the various logo selection processes. Each of the Wikipedia editions would have to carry a visible notice about the poll, because the portal is by far the most visible of Wikimedia's webpages, and every language (at least the 100+ languages) would be affected to some extent. And of course, we can add a little blurb on the portal itself, maybe just below the search bar. Ideally, we'd involve the translation community here; visitors from non-English projects may feel left out of the decision if we allow most of the discussion to take place in only English.

So far, the only serious proposals I know of are Catherine's current design and Forseti's. We should expect a good deal of support for the current design, so we'll have to make a good case for changing it (internationalization, expandability, newer is better, etc.). We also need to make clear the new design's requirements, based on our experience as admins having to maintain the portal regularly. For example, we can't just say that every language with over 100,000 articles gets to be at the top, unless we have some way of accommodating 15 or 20 languages up there, even on lower-resolution screens. (Because we should expect the new design to last awhile.) We also need to keep an eye on page size, load time, and accessibility. So although a clickable Flash map of the world would be a cool way to select a language, we really can't use it.

By involving the wider community in designing the portal, the portal will seem like less of a temporary hack (which it is currently), and maybe the developers will finally get around to fixing bugs like 4501, 1534, 15518, and 15758. We could really excite volunteer designers with a well-publicized poll.

 – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 06:00, 21 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

It's certainly a long-term discussion. And strange that only those two proposals have been considered seriously -- this is a famous and highly visible page! Now that Jack and others are actively working on improving the page, it seems like a good time to get new designers involved. Thanks for highlighting those related bugs; I've been trying to gather important bugs for various long-term projects, since we don't have a unified set of priorities at the moment (or even a list of a hundred different clusters of priorities belonging to different groups).
Before any large poll is started, existing discussions about the portal should be consolidated -- they are hard to follow, especially for someone coming in fresh. The odd naming convention for the portal pages doesn't help. We need to convert something like Initiatives into a meta-equivalent of w:Wikipedia:Wikiprojects, and organize a discussion there - that is something that visitors from large wikipedias might be more comfortable with. -- sj | help translate |+ 06:31, 21 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Actually, the poll that decided the current design was between Catherine's design and a temporary design that really no one liked. [4] (It looked something like the current "Wiki does not exist" error page.) Unfortunately, Forseti introduced his design just a bit too late for the majority of voters to take notice, and efforts to merge the two designs as a compromise never resulted in much change. Forseti's design did get reused for some Toolserver tools and the old server downtime message.
But none of these designs really did anything about the severe usability issue of choosing between hundreds of languages. Plenty of websites feature a language selection page upfront, but Wikipedia's the only site I know of that suffers from the issue to that extent. Even a clickable Flash world map wouldn't work for us, because of geopolitical issues and the sheer number of minority languages represented here. So not only do we need designers to step up, but we also need to engage usability experts. WikiProject Usability at the English Wikipedia might have some professional usability/HCI contacts who might be of help in creating a new proposal.
