The Image

The International School Bangalore (TISB) is regarded as one of Bangalore's best private schools and one of the top schools in India[citation needed]. The school has reported to be difficult to get into, however there are some who disagree[citation needed]. None the less its wait list is extremely long, and most applicants have been on it for years[citation needed]. The school has a very good image not only in India but around the world, especially in the United Kingdom and Germany[citation needed].

The school is located on the outskirts of the city on a huge campus with various buildings housing both academic and boarding facilities apart from other co-curricular activities.

The School

TISB has a broad curriculum for its elementary school students that is designed to acquaint them with both Eastern and Western culture and methods of study. The students have a choice of studying Indian languages such as Hindi or Kannada, or Western languages such as French, Spanish or German. English is a compulsory subject in this school. The school also has an EFL department.

Examinations are held once at the end of each academic year for grades 6, 7 and 8. In grades 9 and 10, the students take the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) course. In grades 11 and 12, they follow the International Baccalaureate(IB) Diploma. IGCSE is conducted by the University of Cambridge International Examinations - CIE and the IB Examinations are conducted by the International Baccalaureate Organization - (IBO)

Clubs and facilities

Sports facilities include basketball, football, cricket, hockey, badminton, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, swimming, squash and athletics. It also offers horse riding and golfing for extra charges outside the campus. School starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m., with a break at 10:45-11:00 a.m. and lunch at 1:15 - 2:00 p.m. . There is one computer lab for the students and a seperate one for the faculty apart from the few computers that are available in the library. The computers are of high specifications and are provided with high speed broadband. The school is also expanding its campus to include a 9-hole golf course and are proposing a university with a tie up with the University of Newcastle upon Tyne for undergraduate studies[citation needed].

The school has produced some plays (Oliver Twist, Bugsy, and others), and a few in-house concerts. The school has various clubs and organizations such as the Model United Nations (MUN) and many clubs relating to the arts, sports, and education. TISB students run a drama club, a school choir, and few other special-interest groups.

Vivum - Intercollegiate Fest

The school also hosts a yearly student fest called Vivum. The fest is run mostly by the 12th grade batch of that year along with assistance from a few 11th graders. They have to arrange their own finances but the school has control over what the students may do and are restricted in many ways. The fest includes various competitions like MUN, Speech and Debate, Writing, Drama, Dance, Drawing, Science, Computer Programming, and other such activities apart from a sports competition. The fest ends with a climatic Battle of the Bands where bands from the invited schools play for the entire student population for the title. The TISB bands also plays; however does not participate in the competition. The only part of the fest that the school competes in are the sporting events.

Other Activities

Apart from its sports and extra-curriculars the school has some other activities the students can participate in. TISB conducts workshops for both IGCSE and IB teachers from around the world. The workshop conductors are teachers from other international schools from countries such as Britain, Thailand and Singapore. There are a few ex-TISB teachers who conduct them but none of the conductors currently teach at TISB. The school also takes part in several community-driven activities such as the annual Terry Fox Run and the aid of several underprivileged children in need of an education. The school has also setting up a sister school in Tamil Nadu for the recent tsunami victims using money taken as well as donated by the school students.

Teachers

The school had a very good reputation for good quality education however over the years many of the teachers have left the school, alledgedly due to its restrictive and disciplinary nature[citation needed]. They also tend to leave in search of better paychecks and benefits, despite the school having a huge student populations and being one of the most expensive schools in India[citation needed]. The administrative staff are strict when it comes to dealing with students. The school enforces strict rules regarding relations between the two sexes and on regular behaviour. Students are punished for several reasons and are expected to be completely obedient to the school's rules.

College Placement

TISB has a reputation for weeding out the meek in the early stages[citation needed]. It has a tough entrance test and lets only the best in. This is the primary reason for its excellent college placement. The majority of graduates regularly attend some of the best colleges and universities in India and around the world, such as the BITS Pilani, all the Ivy League universities, Columbia University, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, UC Berkeley, London School of Economics,University of Bath, University of Durham, University of Warwick, University of Edinburgh,University of Birmingham,Imperial University,University of Manchester, The Delhi School of Economics, St. Stephen's College, Lady Shri Ram College and many others. The college placement service sends the required documents and completes the necessary forms. Students often do their own research and decide the best choice for themselves[citation needed].
