I have set up Catalan Wikipedia and Deutsche Wikipedia (German) and Nihongo no Wikpedia (Japanese), and I anxiously expect there to be some problems or complaints as people start to use them.

A certain amount of "critical mass" is necessary in order for a wiki to "take off". Without 5-10 people eagerly writing and arguing and playing with each other, it wouldn't be as much fun. So we encourage anyone who wants to build a wiki in their own language to also go out and announce/recruit for it. :-)
And then any other languages can be set up very quickly.

I would anticipate that a certain amount of "critical mass" is necessary in order for a wiki to "take off". Without 5-10 people eagerly writing and arguing and playing with each other, it wouldn't be as much fun. So I encourage anyone who likes to have a wiki in their own language to also go out and announce/recruit for it. :-)

Here are some "international Wikipedia" policy questions. To a certain extent, these questions will resolve themselves, though.
* How are the various Wikipedias going to be coordinated, if at all? Will we have several quite different articles in different languages? Will English be a lingua franca? See /Coordination to discuss.
* What are some suggestions about what can be put on new language Wikipedia home pages? See /Homepages to discuss.
* What are some suggestions about how to use "international Wikipedias" for purposes of Nupedia article translation projects? See Translation to discuss.
* Anything else?

Please suggest new language Wikipedias below!

Based on some very excellent recommendations and a little research on my part, I am thinking now of using these ISO 639-1 codes for the 'canonical' names of the International Wikis. 'www' will be for the English language wiki, because it was first and largest, and because I speak English. :-)

I will additionally attempt to support as many variations such as
german.wikipedia.com, deutsche.wikipedia.com, etc.
espanol.wikipedia.com, castellano.wikipedia.com, etc.

...if you take a wild guess at one of those, then you will end up
at the right place after all.

I've deleted the discussion, all of which was excellent, to make room for more discussion, if necessary.

At the present time, I plan to create new wikis for each langauge only "upon request" -- but it only takes me 10 minutes to do it, so don't hesitate to request.

What a great idea to run parallel wikipedias for different languages! All maintenance problems solved, back-up work and enthusiasm immediatly benefit all the wikis.

For my own personal taste I would very much like a wikipedia in swedish. The best name for it would be svensk.wikipedia.com with the canonical sv.wikipedia.com as a complement. LinusTolke

I loved the concept of Wikipedia site and I'm sure that it would be a sucess in my country!

So, why not a Wikipedia in portuguese (pt.wikipedia.com)? I can't wait for that!

One of the people who did Frank would like to see a Wikipedia in French. He or she claims there is stuff ready to go in.

Wiki encyclopedias have been started in other languages:

Spanish (Espanol) -- Chinese -- Catalan (Catalana) -- Esperanto -- French (Francais) -- German (Deutsch) --- Hebrew -- Italian (Italiano) -- Japanese (Nihongo) -- Portuguese (Portugues) -- Spanish (Espanol) -- Russian (Russkiy)

Here are some "international Wikipedia" policy questions. To a certain extent, these questions will resolve themselves, though.

 • How are the various Wikipedias going to be coordinated, if at all? Will we have several quite different articles in different languages? Will English be a lingua franca? See /Coordination to discuss.
 • What are some suggestions about what can be put on new language Wikipedia home pages? See /Homepages to discuss.
 • What are some suggestions about how to use "international Wikipedias" for purposes of Nupedia article translation projects? See /Nupedia Translation to discuss.
 • Anything else?

For my own personal taste I would very much like a wikipedia in swedish. The best name for it would be svensk.wikipedia.com with the canonical sv.wikipedia.com as a complement. LinusTolke
