Template:Hangon 255 McKibbin St. is a four-story residential loft building in Bushwick, New York. Each of its four floors is subdivided intp approximately 15 apartment units, ranging in size from 800 to 1200 square feet. Approximately 200 tenants inhabit 255 McKibbin Street. Monthly rent for each of these units ranges from $1800 to $3000.

The building has a reputation for hosting racuous all-night "loft parties." Given this, and the preponderance of twenty-something recent college graduates living in 255 McKibbin Street, the building has been givem the nickname "The McKibbin street dorms."

The spelling of McKibbin St. is an unresolved issue. The street signs spell it McKibbin, but most other sources spell it McKibben. In addtion, most online maps such as Googlemaps and Mapquest are unable to accurately pinpoint the location of the building.

Major Events

In the summer of 2005, a chain of events was set in motion when water leaked into an apartment on the basement/ground floor from the floor above it. The occupants of the lower floor complained to the super, who attempted to locate the source of the leak and contacted the fire department to have the water in the apartment shut off. The occupants of the upper floor were not home, but the fire department entered the apartment and turned the water off. They also discovered that the apartment was home to a professional marijuana-growing operation utilizing grow lights and an irrigation system. It was the latter which had caused the leak. The fire department left after contacting the local police station and alerting them to the presence of the marijuana plants. Before the police arrived, however, other inhabitants of the building got word of the marijuana plants and entered the apartment, carrying off a number of the plants for their personal use. The apartment's occupants then arrived on the scene and, after discovering that the police had been contacted, quickly fled. They never returned.

On July 4, 2005, at approximately 11 am, apartment number 304 (new numbering—see below) exploded, causing major sturctural, smoke, and water damage to surrounding units. The cause for the explosion is thought to be the combustion of unattended polyurethane stripper: apartment 304 had recently been vacated, and was being refurnished by the building's management. As an aspect of this, the wood floor was coated with the varnish remover, and left unattened to saturate. When vapors from the varnish reached the pilot light of the unit's stove (which had not been turned off), the entire unit exploded. The windows and metal window frames in 304 were ripped out of the brick building's brick walls.

In May, 2007 the building's apartments and street address were revised. Prior to this time, the building had possessed two street address: 255 and 265. All apartments which had previously received mail at 265 McKibbin St. were now relocated to the 255 side. This event was reported in a blog post on the website Gawker.[1]
