1976
- May 21 - A rented 1950 Crown school bus carrying 50 students of the Yuba City High School A'Capella choir depletes the air supply to its brakes while on Hwy. 680 bound for Orinda. Although an unmarked warning light comes on the bus drivers' console, he thinks it is oil pressure and, without braking power, enters the southbound Marina Vista exit heading for downtown Martinez California to get service. Estimated speed was 45 mph in a 25 mph elevated ramp. Centrifugal force causes the bus to jump the curb to its left and lunge up against the guard rail, scraping along until the guard rail gives way and the bus launches out into empty air. The old school bus begins a counter-clockwise roll as it plummets to the earth. When it hits the ground, the bus is completely upside down. The bus lands nose first and the rest of the bus slams against the ground, crushing the roof against the seat tops inside - from the outside, it looks like a smashed accordion. The bus slides to a stop, leaving a trail of hard clay as the heat from the friction melts the dirt underneath. The crash kills 29: a teacher acting as chaperone plus 28 students. Deadliest school bus crash in United States. The California Highway Patrol later determines that the bus had not been regularly maintained by the rental company, had been released without proper inspection, and a worn fanbelt that circled from the driveshaft to the air compressor had come apart and fallen off leaving the bus without adequate pressure to provide braking.
