Who is the Rubicon Foundation, Inc

The Rubicon Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization undertaking projects that:

  • Contribute to the interdependent dynamic between research, exploration, science and education;
  • Improve the available resources for students, professionals and the general public; and
  • Preserve the valuable natural resources that are vital to future endeavors.

Collaboration enhances outcomes by combining independent efforts to form a single force working toward the realization of common goals. The Rubicon Foundation is building a solid network of collaborators — public and private businesses, non-profit organizations, government entities and philanthropists.

Contribution

Exploration and research are the genesis of scientific explanation. The Rubicon Foundation initiates projects that contribute to the expansion of human understanding.

Improvement

The widespread availability of technologies such as the internet translates into an opportunity to reach an international audience. In today’s world we are able to witness the evolution of human exploration from the depths of the ocean to the edges of the known universe. We are able to share the experience of the unknown transforming into the understood. The Rubicon Foundation incorporates technology into projects that benefit from extended capabilities and availability. Through our educational and electronic library projects, we create a ripple effect that will develop tomorrow’s leaders. We provide resources to an international audience through the incorporation of neoteric methods. Electronic libraries and internet-based tools provide an unlimited potential for sharing knowledge, recent discoveries, current pursuits and effective outcomes.

Preservation

Our environment is a global system — ocean, land and sky are interconnected. Destruction and damage is not limited to an isolated area nor is it an independent loss. The Rubicon Foundation strives to find balance between human demands and ecosystem preservation. To this end we pursue projects that expand mankind’s understanding and knowledge of our environment. We also undertake efforts to identify threats to ecosystems and to develop approaches that minimize the negative impact of human interactions. Our solutions address the root cause and, therefore, provide viable options that broaden the benefits that are realized in protected areas. [1]

Rubicon Research Repository

This project began with the goal to to make the available resources more accessible. The focal point of this project has been collection and scanning documents for inclusion in our digital repository.

The system is comprised of the sections sections listed below. New sections will be added as the documents become available. Any search of the entire "Rubicon Foundation Archive" will access all the collections listed within that community.

  • Technical Reports - This section is made up of various technical reports. We currently have hundreds of reports on hand from the US Naval Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU), the US Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI), the US Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL) and the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) that are being added. We have other reports from all over the world and are negotiating copyright concerns on those now. New reports are added weekly so check back often.
  • Thesis - Ph.D. and M.S. theses from all over the world have been requested and will be filling this section. Many of the published theses cover baseline work not listed in the actual peer reviewed publications the authors submit. Many others are not even published in any format other than their final work for completion of the degree program. We are attempting to pull these works together so that this valuable work can be shared with everyone. Feel free to contact us with your thesis if you would like it added to our collection.
  • Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) abstracts - These are the published abstracts from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society annual meetings. These are currently unavailable in any index or other searchable format. Their addition helps to make this collection of work even more unique (1974 to current).
  • Undersea Biomedical Research - UHMS has granted permission and these journal articles are online. More information can be found at Undersea Biomedical Research (1974 to 1992).
  • Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine - UHMS has granted permission and these journal articles are online. More information can be found at Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine (1993 to 2002).
  • Journal of Hyperbaric Medicine (Coming Soon) - UHMS has granted permission to add these previously un-indexed journal articles. More information can be found at Journal of Hyperbaric Medicine (1986 to 1992).
  • Unpublished Reports - This will be a collection of articles and baseline data that have been used internally by our collaborators but never used in formal published work. Check back, more on this to come.

The Repository runs on an Apple G5 XServe with DSpace V. 1.3.2 Open Source software. More information on DSpace can be found at their site on the project's web site or downloaded from SourceForge. [1]

Archive

Our Archive project was born out of our Rubicon Research Repository. The goal of this project was to make collections of printed research available in an electronic format. It is our hope that by making these collections of often hard to find documents electronic, they will be have a broader reach.

Through these collaborations we have built the collections listed below.

Complete Collections. Undersea Biomedical Research (1974 to 1992) in cooperation with Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine (1993 to current) in cooperation with GUE UHMS Workshops supported by Divers Alert Network (DAN) Underwater Medicine and Related Sciences supported by UHMS Hyperbaric Oxygen Review (1980 to 1985) Journal of Hyperbaric Medicine (1986 to 1992) [1]
