Translation of the week/Translation candidates

These are the candidates for translation of the week.

  • If a candidate has more opposing votes than supporting ones after two weeks, you may remove it from the list.
  • If a candidate has no vote other than the nominator after two weeks, you may remove them from the list.
  • If a candidate has an equal number of opposing votes and supporting votes after 3 months, you may remove it from the list.
  • Valid vote = Support - Oppose. Otherwise you may simply abstain from the vote, or you may add a comment under a heading Comments.

When proposing a candidate, please include pronunciations for terms left untranslated, such as proper names and foreign terms, for the sake of languages that will want to transliterate them.

    • "only 10K articles"! I don't think that's a small amount! No offence, but generally language Wikipedias should first look at broadening the range of local topics. The Romanian Wikipedia is guilty of this too ;) - we don't have many Romania-related topics either. Anyway, it's good that it's translated in Russian now.

    • There's always been this issue going on about whether we want less articles but which cover more information, or whether we want to have smaller, more specific articles. Personally, I favour smaller more specific articles which are linked from a "main" article such as Danube. Therefore, especially judging its importance, I think there should be a separate article on Danube Delta. They do the same things with countries - there are separate articles for Economy of xx, Demographics of xx, etc. Ronline 12:35, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
      • I agree with you that there should be an article of its own if the space of the specific topic will arrive a critical length, so it should be an article of de:Biosphärenreservat_Donaudelta but not in that short form this article is now.     • (I admit to reading through this page a bit hasty.) Can you change the introduction to a separate paragraph, with the essential stuff: Founded, purpose, became military, best known for, demise?   • The english, german, norvegian russian, bulgarian and polish versions are longer and, I think, different. It would be nice to create a bigger article from all different languages (from other languages to english) and then translate it (from english) into other languages. An article from the newly created (Feb 2005) Ossetic Wikipedia about an Ossetian writer and journalist Arsen Kotsoyev (1872-1944), who influenced greatly on the modern language and literature (Коцойты Арсен). Links to:
Ossetia, Vladikavkaz, Beslan, Ossetian language, Lenin, etc. The Russian and German versions are really large, while the English is as short, as wikipedians like to translate. ;) You might choose to translate only the first two paragraphs and to take the image (it's on the Commons, so you won't need to upload it to your language Wikipedia).

    • As far as I'm aware, the whole goal of TOTW was to encourage little-known yet easy-to-translate articles to be translated so that language Wikipedias could then use these articles as a starting point to cover little-known content, thereby deepening their coverage of knowledge/information.     • Maybe controversial to 日本本土人民 (general population Japan mainland), or even one 日本本土言語?者 (Japan mainland linguist), but all expert (not general linguistics or even Japan linguistics, but talked area's speech) agrees multiple languages separate Japanese. Specialists in world not call 'dialect', also introduction article 言語?大?典 (under 琉球語) strong opposes call dialects.

    • That was not intended as an attack against you ;-) but as a simple remark about what "all experts on the subject (not general linguistics or even Japanese linguistics etc," agree on.

Each word related indeed, but olny single short sentence. Simple words "boy" + "girl" wildly differ from said Tokyo - boy "wikiga", girl "winagu" Naha. Also personal pronoun differ, "I" "wan" Naha, Yonaguni "banu". I say before expert vs popular knowledge, even many people believes Sanskrit ancestor Indo-European languages, actual 100% false agrees every expert, so not include opinion article because no expert agrees.
