Janaki was married to former Indian President R. Venkataraman

Janaki Venkataraman, the former First Lady of India and the widow of former President, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, died at 89. Her family members said that she was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram hospital on August 10 with complaints of chest infection. Sources say that she died around 4:30 p.m. local time (1100 GMT).

Venkataraman was the First Lady of India from 1987 to 1992 when her husband, Ramaswamy, was the president of India. She was widowed in January 2009 when Ramaswamy died at 98.

Pratibha Patil, the current president of India, paid tribute to Venkataraman in a letter to her daughter, Padma. She said "as a first lady of the country she has performed her role with utmost grace and dignity during the tenure of R Venkataraman."

She is survived by her three daughters, Padma, Vijaya and Ramachandran.
