== Adding categories with colons in them ==

<small>User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0</small>

The category autocomplete doesn't work properly for categories with colons in them. The part of the category name after the colon doesn't show up in the list of options.

For example, I found this problem when trying to add the category:

  • I've tried to upload a file but after I click "Continue" button, nothing happening. Maybe it's something with JS. Wizardist (talk) 17:49, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Chrome Debugger says:
Uncaught Error: Parse error at position 48 in input: Ня ўсе ліцэнзіі Creative Commons дапушчальныя ў {{GRAMMAR:месны|{{SITENAME}}}}. Пераканайцеся, што ўладальнік аўтарскіх правоў выбраў адну з гэтых ліцэнзіяў.
I suggest that GRAMMAR is not supported in this message. I think that such a support should be implemented. Until it's done, I'll get out of GRAMMAR in Mwe-upwiz-license-cc-subhead in translatewiki.net. Wizardist (talk) 17:53, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • When trying to upload a .jpg the up-loader just keeps ticking up for time to upload and never uploads. Granitecitytool (talk) 16:55, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Helpfull for uploading more than 1 picture, but I got errors today Sanko (talk) 15:08, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I tried to upload 9 files, give them a sound description, categorization, coords, .. and was interrupted by dinner. After dinner, I could finish the input of necessary data, and try to apply the description to the already uploaded images. But the progress wheel kept spinning and never returned. So I lost all the work of about one hour! Nice. My question: Is there a time limit? Can it be set in a way that it does not hurt, if you have to go away for some hours? Herzi Pinki (talk) 19:22, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly there is and it's very short, it's 20 minutes or less. This is not a deliberate policy, it's because we are storing information somewhere that's rather volatile before we enter it into the database. It's our fault that we haven't implemented this in durable storage yet. NeilK (talk) 21:38, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am very happy with the wizard. However, I had problems as I was uploading some photos. After an error occurred I had to go back and select the photos to upload again as yet it was only one that had no description. thank you. Stephen wanjau (talk) 13:41, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've received some errors, when i was uploading photo at step "Describe" and i couldn't continue the upload:

I'm seeing this a lot too. But I never saw that before today. It's strange because nothing in our application has changed with regards to checking the filename. I suspect the issue is with the server. NeilK (talk) 21:26, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Its looks simple. BUT it is impossible to follow the transfer process, I have not found or there is no activity window. The warning sings are not clear, Therefore its not clear if there is a problem or its takes too much time to transfer. Tjaarke maas (talk) 20:11, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I tried to upload a file titled "Marek Wojciech Chmurzyński.jpg". The upload wizard answered "This looks like a file you obtained from another imagehost. Please make the title more meaningful.". I don't know, what's going on. I made this photo by myself today, and it cannot be found anywhere else. It seems, that the wizard doesn't accept any file name starting from Marek. It's a pity, because Marek is a Polish equivalent of Mark, and a lot of people uses this name. Finally, I made the title less meaningful and I managed to upload the same photo as File:Chmurzyński.jpg. Olaf (talk) 22:37, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Video

  • I've tried to upload a 22 MB .ogv video file using Upload Wizard; however, it got stuck at the "Getting file information and previews..." stage (i.e. after the actual uploading, I suppose). I waited for approximately 20 minutes, but it stayed at "Getting file information and previews...", so I used the "Remove" link to cancel and uploaded the file in the "classical" way using Special:Upload, it's now at File:Saltstraumen.ogv. Tested with SeaMonkey 2.0.11 on Windows Vista. Gestumblindi (talk) 21:50, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Video upload seems to work now. I was able to successfully upload File:Maschine La Suisse.ogv (37.89 MB) using the Upload Wizard. Apart from the message "The upload succeeded, but the server could not get a preview thumbnail" there was no problem. Gestumblindi (talk) 02:09, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

General interface

  • When set for Spanish language (as for account AlejandroLinaresGarcia) it does not automatically go to the Wizard. It still has the page with the old upload and request to help test the wizard.

  • The "learn" letter type does absolutely not invite to read. I don't think the symbols are very clear. Especially the OK and STOP symbols are often to small. I also think a red cross and a green "v" are much clearer Josq (talk) 13:14, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • After an error at step 3, beginning again: There is another file already on the site with the same content and one cannot act on the files from the previously aborted upload. (After investigation, one finds these files already uploaded...)
  • Upload times seem longer compared to using the standard upload. -- KlausFoehl (talk) 13:42, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Confirmed. For three files of 5, 3 and 9MB a cumulative time of 14 minutes rather high. -- KlausFoehl (talk) 10:52, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Description and categories

  • I'm liking the new image wizard, particularly its ability to upload multiple photos in one go as opposed to one upload at a time. One problem, though. When I was uploading a batch after adding the descriptions and related data (Describe tab), the second of six images came up with a warning symbol (exclamation mark in inverted triangle), but then froze up completely, and I had to back out and start again. I think I forgot to rename the file from the camera's default, and my guess is that it choked on this. Maybe a warning/autodetect that prevents the uploader from clicking on "Next" down the bottom until the filename is changed from a blacklisted or previously-uploaded name. -- saberwyn 02:41, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I always assumed that "date" meant the date of the work being uploaded; i.e., e.g., the scan of a page from a book published in 1904 would have the date "1904" entered; OR an image of a painting painted in 1872 would have the date "1872" entered... But the only options in the "date" dropdown menu or calendar do not go back that far. So what then does "date" refer to? It MUST be more than an upload date... That needs to be addressed... Londonjackbooks (talk) 03:23, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • Looks like it's extracted from EXIF, as happened with some scans I uploaded—these I corrected to 1842, which I couldn't do earlier. Not going to make that much of a difference, since a lot of people just put the upload date anyway. —innotata 19:50, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Category I entered did not register, even though it was an existing, legitimate category which appeared as I typed... Londonjackbooks (talk) 03:23, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • When one accidentially gives the same filename twice, the script does show an exclamation mark, but it then freezes. No way to gracefully recover, entries are lost. -- KlausFoehl (talk) 13:21, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • When renaming, one should be told not to include the file extension but to give the first part of the name only. At least at the stage when typing the .jpg suffix. -- KlausFoehl (talk) 13:55, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • The screenshot speaks for itself. I have photographs of an object in 3 parts, so I wrote as titles "theobject part 1/3" etc. The wizard wrongly believes the titles are identical (they differ by numbers). The biggest problem is: At that point, I can not go back to change the titles. Clicking "Retry" has no effect. All of the metadata I entered for those 3 files is lost. Nicolas1981 (talk) 10:00, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • If too much time elapses between the upload and the final step, files won't be published (with the last step taking forever to complete, and not even an error message to let you know that something's wrong!). I think this is due to the fact that in the meanwhile the files you tried to upload were erased from the Upload Stash. What is really annoying isn't to have to upload them once again, but to lose the description and the categories you added to the files, as you're not allowed to take a step back. My proposed patch is to stretch the time uploaded files are kept in the Upload Stash; if this wasn't possible, at least the Wizard should be changed to show an error message in which the user is asked to pick up again the files from his computer; at this point the Wizard would upload the files and then publish it (with the filenames and description the user inserted before). --Una giornata uggiosa '94 · So, what do you want to talk about? 18:01, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Final step

  • On the "Use" tab, while the "Wiki Home Page" button works fine, the "Upload More Files" button does nothing. -- saberwyn 03:49, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • was making an upload, took long intermissions between stages, everything went ok til the final stage, which never completed & the upload did not go through. that is bad; either the upload should show that it has timed out/failed, OR it should not timeout/fail! Lx 121 (talk) 22:38, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist

Oh. It looks to me like an incompatibility with MSIE, Normally I use Google Chrome on Commons under Vista but today I used Internet Explorer v8.0.601.19048 and got the same failure. When in the modern default skin, I clicked on the white star for my File:South Side Presbyterian jeh.jpg and it failed to change color or indicate any action. Changing my preferences to the classic Monobook skin, I clicked again on the watch tab. It changed to "Watching..." and didn't complete it for minutes. So, yes, it suggests the presence of two bugs, such that images uploaded by the new upload wizard cannot be added to the user's watchlist, but only when we're using MSIE. The workarounds are:

  1. Install another browser which is nice anyway to see how pages will look to readers using their various browsers
  2. Set your Preferences to watch everything you upload

But of course it ought to be fixed in Commons. Anybody else succeeding in replicating this software failure? Jim.henderson (talk) 18:03, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback mechanism

  • I tried to send feedback, and after 10 minutes it is still spinning and saying "Adding feedback to page...". I think you miss a lot of feedback just because the feedback mechanism is not reliable. This is extremely frustrating to have your feedback lost. This might be because in the same page "Submitting details and publishing..." is also spinning endlessly. Nicolas1981 (talk) 04:50, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Upload wizard doesn't work for me in Opera 10.10/MacOSX

When viewing Special:UploadWizard in Opera, I get a spinner for a few seconds as things load, which vanishes, leaving me with a page containing only the standard header, footer, and sidebar. I'm using Opera 10.10 for MacOSX and the Classic skin. --Carnildo (talk) 23:04, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • browser back-button forgets about already done upload. I did a back to lookup the necessary license of the original. Upload lost? Non information about the current state. I want to be redirected to the state in the upload process I was in before. Herzi Pinki (talk) 20:43, 9 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Remove the horizontal line. Make the "next" button on the "learn" page more visible. See hilight of a few remaining interaction design issues for details. Dodoïste (talk) 16:53, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • There's a nice principle in usability design which says that users shouldn't feel trapped. The interface should give them enough options, but afford them the possibility of changing their minds if necessary. Long story short, the uploader needs a Back button. Thanks for this very nice work! Ocaasi (talk) 18:39, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't have said it this way, but I agree with Ocaasi's idea. I strongly expected the steps ("learn", "upload"...) to be clickable, and in fact tried it several times. Not because I needed them badly for the precise task I was doing, but because I felt like it would be clickable. Also, newbies may want to go back to the "learn" step when they are at the "Release rights" step.
"Affordance" doesn't seem to be the right word there, because the 5 steps doesn't look clickable. But the user may be used to click it. Dodoïste (talk) 00:15, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the above. I also think a preview displayed at the end of the wizard, giving the user a chance to review and correct the final output, wouldn't be a bad idea. Currently the uploader doesn't see the description page they've created even once if they don't remember to go there themselves. It can be an optional step if you think it would be too intimidating to newbies. Lampak (talk) 09:28, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Froze up on Screen One (the one with Dizzney-style comics). No matter how I press "Upload" it just froze there. Again and again. And don't tell me "you had to scroll two screens down, and find a pale grey button below this wall of highly educational graphics." Nein. Everything must fit on one screen, especially when "everything" is a single button. Usability 101. NVO (talk) 17:27, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File selection

  • Since it supports multiple files, it would be great if we could select multiple files directly in the select file dialog. Otherwise it is still very cumpersome to upload more than a few files --Waldir talk 22:34, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • Being able to add multiple files to the upload in one go, would be awesome, instead of having to click the link, select the file, select "Open", then rinse and repeat. -- saberwyn 03:49, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Regarding my general feedback to the Wizard - it would be nice being able to add more files via the MS Windows dialog bog "Select file" after clicking "Select a media file to upload". Uploading multiple files is not user friendly. There is a question of file spam of course, there could be a reasonable limit for lets say 20 files. Also, there definitely should be a "review" page creatina extra step between "Describe" and "Use" - user could correct possible errors within description etc. A review (or check) is an important part of any workflow. --Kozuch (talk) 15:00, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a deliberate omission -- we're getting a wizard that works with all browsers first, including old IEs and Firefox, and they can only do one at a time. The code is architected so we can do multiple uploads like that... hope I can get to it. As for reviewing stuff, well, I'm not sure it makes sense for an individual. 90% of the time it will just slow people down. The idea of a holding area for files that admins can access has been kicking around for 2 years now though, and although the WMF isn't allocating resources to it right now someone should do it. NeilK (talk) 21:33, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Upload

  • Adding a way to cancel or remove an image following the 'pre-upload' but before the image is uploaded with description to Commons would be good in case people accidently add multiple copies of the same image to the queue, or decide during the process that they don't want to continue on with a certain photo but not have to cancel out and lose all the other images in the batch -- saberwyn 03:49, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • There should be a way to discard individual files, if they are no longer wanted during the wizard. Also, it's not clear how to cancel the whole wizard. Does just leaving the page delete the files from the server (Are they purged automatically)? Nerd65536 (talk) 03:05, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • A warning about a filename conflict appears only on the Describe step. Is it better for it to appear right after the user uploads the image, to avoid wasted effort on Release rights step? Cmglee (talk) 12:05, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upon uploading an image with an EXIF rotation tag, it would be great to offer automatic rotation to the correct orientation. --MichaelBueker (talk) 17:31, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Licensing

  • When picking my licensing option, I was not able to select a website for the attribution. Also, I was not able to pick a country for the licensing, so it remained as unported. Apart from that, it seems a lot better then the previous method of uploading images. QFSE Media (talk) 22:33, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi. I want to put the author as a link to give credit to someone on Picasa and the 50 characters limit prevents to do that. You should consider changing it. Otherwise I love it. Benoit. Badzil (talk) 20:12, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. As for Picasa, I'm not sure I understand why you had that problem. Is their name really longer than 50 characters? Or were you trying to use a link to Picasa as the author? Anyway we can raise this, but what were you trying to enter? NeilK (talk) 04:27, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was trying to enter this: [https://picasaweb.google.com/cotevaroise.com cotevaroise.com] (cotevaroise.com is the name associated with the Picasa account). This is similar to the Flickr upload which links to the Flickr account of the author of the picture. Thanks. Badzil (talk) 18:31, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Fixed in r86869. Kaldari (talk) 17:21, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Thanks. Keep up the good work. Badzil (talk) 20:18, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am unable to specify that I want to use the CC 2.5 license, in which wikinews requires. Phearson (talk) 14:49, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see any requirement for images to be CC 2.5 on Wikinews. In a few minutes I was able to find PD, US government work, and CC 3.0 licensed images. Actually, I was not able to find a CC 2.5 image. The link to upload images on Wikinews goes straight to Commons:Upload. NeilK (talk) 04:36, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • The phrase "Release rights", though 'verbed' as the other headings are, is somewhat misleading. I think a novice uploader could be scared away by the phrase, as it sounds like he/she is releasing all their rights (many people aren't okay with that). Of course, in the case of many free licenses the creator of the work still retains some rights even after uploading. And that doesn't even cover the myriad uploads where the uploader isn't in a position to release rights at all, as they aren't the creator of the work. A more friendly and accurate heading might be "Explain source" or "License work" (maybe not great suggestions, but that's 30 seconds of thinking!) Gump Stump (talk) 06:22, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Manually inserting licensing templates

  • There should be a way to manually insert licensing templates. I don't expect to see every one on the list, but if the list of options doesn't cover the one we need I would still like to move forward with the upload. As is, I simply select the wrong one and change it after it's uploaded. Not very efficient. Other than that, the upload wizard is a huge improvement and it's very easy to use. Swarm (talk) 21:19, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your comments -- I agree with you. This affects a small number of uploaders but they tend to be the most active. I have something half-ready to go, but I want to make sure it doesn't impede overall usability. NeilK (talk) 21:28, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is an issue for me, as most of my uploads are historic photos with a PD-NZ licence, and I'd like to enter that manually rather than choose the wrong licence and then amend the uploaded file later. Schwede66 01:06, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agree completely. I was uploading images last night that were tagged {{PD-Canada}} and {{PD-1996}} and I had no choice but to upload them with an incorrect license and then go back and manually fix them. Some people won't even bother with the manual fix. There needs to an option to manually enter a license, as the current options are unhelpful and overly U.S.-centric. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 17:19, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are lots of custom licenses for different websites (like Comunismul în România). I want to be able to use those for uploading. NeilK, have you made any progress on that issue? Strainu (talk) 09:01, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering about the status of this as well. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 17:53, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is required too short description of the source like this: "This field is too long. Make it shorter than 200 characters." Make the size of this field unlimited. Snek01 (talk) 18:36, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Description and categories

  • I'm liking the ability to click on the images while in the "Describe" tab for a larger view. However, I missed it on my first pass and think this should be advertised with a "click to enlarge" label on/near each image. -- saberwyn 03:49, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • The system seems to assume you know every bit of information about the picture you are about to upload. If you know that a picture was taken in february 1994, you want to include that as the date but you only have the option to give a precise date. Yaamboo (talk) 09:29, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • When I upload a picture of The Bronx and start typing a category of "the bro..." the selector offers "The bronze..." but not "The Bronx..." presumably because I didn't capitalize the place name. Other programs with autocompletion don't mind whether we use caps or not and this one also should offer both upper and lower case completions. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:52, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0

Just tried the wizard. It seems to work well, except that there was no indication that I should have stated the filenames without extensions. As a result, the files ended up with ".jpg.jpg" and will need to be renamed. The wizard should either advise uploaders not to add extensions, and/or should check for redundant extensions and remove them. — Cheers, JackLee talk 10:51, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate uploads

One of the reasons that I currently see duplicate uploads (uploads of material already here) is that the user wants to fix the filename. Could the message, on this new wizard, that says "file already on the site with the same content" also have a suggestion that the uploader use {{Rename}} instead, if they are trying to give the existing file a better name? --Tony Wills (talk) 12:12, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Batch selection and upload

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:6.0a1) Gecko/20110508 Firefox/6.0a1

Hello,

Currently the wizard does not allow selection of multiple files (via Ctrl and Shift+click) in the "Add another file" prompt. This would be extremely useful when uploading a batch of files.

Also, it does not allow for more than ten files in an upload. I think this limit should be removed or at least raised, to make it easier to add a series of images.

Both of these will make the uploader easier for uploading multiple files, and perhaps decrease reliance on bots for large series of files.

Thank you. InverseHypercube (talk) 03:28, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Usage of the word "Donate"

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:6.0a1) Gecko/20110508 Firefox/6.0a1

I notice the wizard uses the phrase "Donate media file". I object to this wording, because it implies that the uploader relinquishes all rights to Wikimedia Commons, which is not true. Also, the uploader may not be the creator of the file, and may feel it is "not theirs to give", even though it has a Creative Commons license. It should be reworded, perhaps to "Upload media file". InverseHypercube (talk) 03:32, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are arguments on both sides. In my experience, users need to be hit with a sledgehammer to understand that they really are permanently allowing other people to use their works. Naive users (whose grasp of copyright is pretty shaky already) have a vague idea that they always have rights over their own works, no matter what happens. The "donate" wording was suggested by various people including a testing firm we hired. NeilK (talk) 22:15, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see. I guess the sentiment is that it's better to be safe than sorry? InverseHypercube (talk) 23:02, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but these are two very separate issues that are being conflated. Donation to me means something very specific - it's giving something away with no expectation of return. That's not what's happening here - uploaders are giving something away for free, but not necessarily with no expectation of returns (personally, when I upload images under CC-BY-SA, I expect attribution). In contrast, if your aim is to emphasise that an upload is in perpetuity, then simply say that - if necessary adding a check box to make sure that uploaders have read it. "Donating" does not solely mean "in perpetuity" - and to use it as that is fundamentally wrong. Mike Peel (talk) 19:19, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand why «they always have rights over their own works» should be incorrect. They actually do keep them, because licenses are not exclusive. The word "donation" implies a transfer of "ownership" i.e. of exclusive copyrights rights which applies only to the traditional publishers (but perhaps I'm confused by the meaning of the word in Italian, where it's unquestionably wrong). I wonder if that mysterious testing firm knows how free knowledge and licenses work. Nemo 19:38, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Both Nemo and Mike Peel are absolutely correct. Nobody is "donating" anything here, at least to Commons. Even people who use PD as license "donate" their works to public domain, not to Commons. I never donate anything to Commons or Public Domain except my time, and the copyright of my pictures remains with me. The word "donate" is absolutely wrong and misleading, and should be removed from there ASAP.--- Darwin Ahoy! 21:46, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1

The number of licenses is too restricted. There should be another option "More". Under this option special licenses such {{PD-author|name}} could be added. With the present wizard this is not possible and results in a loss of time by having to chose first a wrong license and then changing it afterwards when the file has been uploaded. Also the possibility of {{Licensereview}} should be easier to add. A plus in this wizard is the possibility of uploading several images at the same time.

First of all... "donate"? Wouldn't "upload" be a better term? Even as a regular contributor, this word stopped me in my tracks. It's a bit confusing.

Second, is it supposed to be a button? I was hovering the mouse all over it until I finally found the "link" which is somewhere at the top of the "donate" graphic. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 02:45, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, now that I'm trying this, instead of "donate", how about "Add file". Because that's all you're doing. The next page says "add more?"... not "donate more" lol. Thanks. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 02:51, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Despite other notices, some photographers are later surprised to discover that we have given the Foundation (and the world) part or all of our rights to our pictures. Better to pause now to consider the question, than regret later. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:19, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The problem, though also continues to the "Donate" link on the left column. Do I click "Donate" to upload a file, or "donate" to send money? But after reading the similar above discussion, I guess it makes sense. But I'm still having the same trouble that the button isn't entirely clickable. I'm using the "Modern" skin, maybe that's affecting it (since it seems to affect a lot of things), but the graphic should entirely be clickable, not just a random top third of it. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 07:36, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, this just popped into my head: Would it be possible to have an "old version" button in the menu, next to the "Upload file" link? I would rather not have to click twice to get to the one page I'm going. (No need to clutter up my bookmarks either, lest that be suggested.) – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 02:49, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My mistake was using this for the first time with a derivative image, which I simply can't figure out. And it's certainly more time-consuming to be skipping around between two browser windows, trying to figure out everything that will need to be copy pasted in the end. Can there be a warning at the beginning that says Derivative Images should use the old form? – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 02:55, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I mean, just add a link to Derivative FX in the options, and voila, problem solved. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 02:56, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Although that may seem like an obvious thing to do, we prefer not to add links to UploadWizard which would be very confusing to new users, nor is it clear that the UploadWizard process is the right place for derivative works uploads to be managed. Some quibbles

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1

I love it when uploading multiple files. However:

1) No links to DerivativeFX at all, Flinfo, and other tools at all. Users should be presented with those options as well.

You're right and this is a flaw. However, I'm not sure how to bring DerivativeFX into this flow without ruining the usability for the common case. NeilK (talk) 18:16, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

2) Over-reliance on flash thingies. Please provide an HTML version with the same steps for those of us with unreliable connections. ObsidinSoul 16:26, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There's no Flash. This is all HTML+JavaScript. If we were allowed to use Flash this would have been 10x easier. As for unreliability we may have some better news for you soon. NeilK (talk) 18:16, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; de; rv:1.9.1.19) Gecko/20110420 Firefox/3.5.19

I have uploaded a number of images, released the rights, but when I get to the describe part, it starts publishing the first couple of images, but is not able to complete the last one or last two even. Which is annoying because it means I have to go back and re-upload the images that it was not able to do. Gryffindor (talk) 21:52, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There may be some API errors left that UW cannot handle yet, which cause these problems in the final step. We're planning to add at least a "remove" link ASAP, so when this happens, you can move on to the next file manually. If you notice a reproducible pattern, please report as much detail as possible -- which files failed (e.g. "the 3rd file failed, but when I tried again it worked" or "the 3rd file failed and I can't succeed uploading it through UW, but I could through the old form"). Editing every single image

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; de; rv:1.9.1.19) Gecko/20110420 Firefox/3.5.19

I sometimes have a number of images that I upload with Commonist in one sequence, so basically different angles of one building for example. But on the upload "Wizard", I have to add each image individually and individually add the description and the categories, even though it's all the same. That works with Commonist, not on this one though, so it's a waste of time. Gryffindor (talk) 21:53, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it's not a trivial user interface pattern to get right without adding clutter, but I hope we'll be able to add something like a simple "Copy details from above" button.--Eloquence (talk) 23:30, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Only up to 10 images?

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; de; rv:1.9.1.19) Gecko/20110420 Firefox/3.5.19

I can only upload a maximum of 10 images in one go? Not good... Gryffindor (talk) 22:23, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UW currently has a maximum session length of 25 minutes (related to some backend architecture issues that we'll need to resolve), which I think is the reason for this hardcoded limit. It also doesn't deal with error situations in the final step very well yet. But I definitely agree that eliminating this restriction would be highly desirable.--Eloquence (talk) 23:32, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The final step of vverification freezes

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1

There is no option to skip a frozen process in a batch upload. When this occurs with the 2nd image of a five image upload, the whole process must be repeated from the beginning which makes the process very time consuming. (The frozen image of the first try is successfully uploaded on the 2nd try). Ineuw talk page on en.ws 03:21, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

It's still on toolserver, http://toolserver.org/~luxo/derivativeFX/deri1.php
Within the new environment, you just have to write all the code yourself - similar to what Luxo's tool writes. I once managed to have it done in a single pass (using an external editor and copypasting from it into vampire fields). But since I had to come back to manually insert categories and remove added trash, why bother? A faster (but dirty) solution: use the simplest "own work" path to save time, then edit the template as you normally would, ASAP. NVO (talk) 11:41, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In general, the old upload form is a cumulative nightmare of incremental feature and documentation additions supplemented with confusing hacks situated on the toolserver or in site-scripts. See usability study conducted during the development and a quick UploadWizard vs. old upload form comparison conducted via usertesting.com earlier this week. The tester comments in the second link about the old form speak for themselves: "Compared with other image upload processes you've seen, would you say this process was easy or difficult?" "This process is the most difficult I've ever used. "
So, UploadWizard has taken the approach of optimizing for the most common use cases first. We're continuing to focus on that as the main goal, and additional features like easier Flickr import and geo-tagging as a secondary goal. It's not necessarily clear that use cases like derivative works even belong there. An ideal implementation might be situated on the file description page for the file of which you'd want to upload a derivative.
What we're not going to do is turn UW into the old upload form by just throwing a bunch of links in there which would be very confusing to new users. That means that unfortunately, UW won't immediately be able to satisfy all needs/workflows. But tools like Luxo's remain available and usable, as does the old form.--Eloquence (talk) 23:28, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1

Kudos for your Upload Wizard efforts! - Several minor problems and suggestions:

  1. The number of images for a single upload batch is unknown. This would really help.
  2. Checking of duplicates should be rejected at the earliest - like prior to the initial upload.
  3. In case of an (by a duplicate) upload error, it jams up instead of bypassing/deleting the error.
  4. The date selection interferes with historical date, when only the year is known as in 1898.
  5. Option to apply the date and category to all the uploads in a batch

Thanks

Thanks for your comments. Can you clarify the duplicate file issue? Are you talking about a file with the same contents as an existing one? If so, the expected behavior is for it to be rejected immediately (in the first step) upon upload.--Eloquence (talk) 02:22, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Select a media file to donate" button not a button

The gray box that enwraps "select a media file to donate" should be made into a button, or at least the entire surface should be clickable, or the actual phrase should be clickable. As it stands, it's not intuitive because the link is almost mapped to be above the phrase. Only the very top portion of the button is clickable. On Vector skin, it's right above the words, but on Modern skin, it's way above the words. I keep swinging my mouse around searching for the link. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 14:09, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's not normal behavior -- the entire button area should be clickable. It sounds like a browser-specific issue. We'll investigate it.--Eloquence (talk) 02:12, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Files lost + titleblacklist + license problems + watchlist

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.0 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/3.0.195.33 Safari/532.0

I have just uploaded three files with this tool. I have seen the following problems:

  • I have seen that new tool has a mass upload and wanted to try it. It resulted in the fact that the first file was uploaded immediately, however, I have been waiting for the second one for well some 15 minutes. It looks like it got lost... How long does this wizard normally works?
UPD. I received a message "Some uploads have failed" (it took this tool 15 minutes to realize it) and asked to try again. It keeps showing "Submitting details and publishing...". I can't stop, retry, come back etc. So finally after having waited for 25 minutes I closed this wizard, losing all the information I added (where is the Back button???) and leaving the photo uploaded... somewhere, I don't know exactly where. Thanks to developers for great 25 minutes I've spent making this tool work. However, the tool wins — NickK (talk) 23:06, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, failure in the final step is very annoying - sorry you experienced this. This is caused by API failures, some of which we may be able to catch, some of which we won't (but in which case we should fail more gracefully). We're working on a short-term fix to at least make it possible to remove uploads that are failing so that the entire batch doesn't get stalled, while working on tracking down more of the bugs that cause stalling in the final step.--Eloquence (talk) 02:09, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the best short-term fix should be some kind of Back button. If your upload fails, you loose all description information you added. More files you upload at once, the higher is the possibility of bug (mine occured at 2nd of 2), so the higher is the possibility you'll have to type it once more... — NickK (talk) 00:03, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • For unknown reasons I couldn't add an OTRS permission to license field, moreover, there is no way to add a generic license like {{Victoria Sydorova}} (OTRS permission template), so I had to select the closest relevant license and add it to Other field, than change it manually. I tried selecting that none of the above choises is good, the useful wizard offered me to leave the form... Maybe it is really the only solution...
  • I don't know how the titleblacklist works. I tried to upload a photo of a footballer Junior Godoi. I've received a warning that this photo was taken from some external resource and I should change the name. Well, I did, thanks to someone's logics, Godoi Junior suprisingly worked. However, 15 minutes have passed, and this file hasn't arrived yet...
For debugging purposes, can you send me a copy of the file as originally named to erik(at)wikimedia(dot)org?--Eloquence (talk) 02:09, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Special:Upload had no problem uploading exactly the same file under exactly the same name: File:Junior Godoi2.jpg. Original URL is http://cs10102.vkontakte.ru/u12051500/135246113/x_ca4f5990.jpg, I saved picture locally as Junior_Godoi2.jpg (NOT as x_ca4f5990.jpg), I didn't change anything and tried uploading it with UploadWizard — NickK (talk) 00:03, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I didn't find how to add the photo to the watchlist. I usually watch all my uploads, but this tool doesn't have this option. As it does not offer direct link to the file, I have to go through My Contributions, open the file and press "Watch". Or I can copy and paste file name, but this solution is not much better. Why this simple button was removed?
  • I don't mention the speed. It looks like it uploads interface longer than the files

So I have only one question. Although I have "Exclude me from feature experiments" and "Use the old-style upload form layout" marked in my preferences, I can't come back to old form by default. I would appreciate any advice on doing that. Thanks NickK (talk) 22:56, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

uploading of derivative works

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1

Currently the given options make a bit confusing to upload a derivative of an already hosted in Commons image specially when the original image has some templates different from the top 3 or 4

There should be a simpler option on the "This file is not my own work" menu:

  • "This is a derivative image from another Commons file":

where you just put the filename and the wizard fills the data (whatever it is) from the original file, including the contributors history.

This would significantly improve the process and also foster Commons not just as a free image host but a host where images have a free license and therefore can be freely modified -- Magister Mathematicae 23:56, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should target two features:
1) making it easier to add custom templates of any sort;
2) adding more intuitive derivative/overwrite features directly to the file description page.
Adding 1) would deal with most of the inconveniences that people are immediately encountering using UploadWizard. Adding 2) would be the intuitive, user-friendly way to deal with derivatives. Ideally, the implementation of 2) would include automatically parsing the file's license, and suggesting it as the default for the new file. (But that's tricky given the lack of machine-readable metadata.)--Eloquence (talk) 00:15, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please return the old upload form to default

This new upload wizard is really awkward and virtually unusable, at least to me. I tried to upload a derivative of a file from Commons and was unable to, and had to get back to the old form. This new thing really is a nuisance, please disable it or place it somewhere else, but return the old form to default. - Darwin Ahoy! 08:27, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I even tried to upload the image normally, but was barred by the wizard for whatever reason, it kept saying my upload failed. Indeed, I didn't even found out how to write down the image information, since it attempted to upload it right away (and then failed saying it dodn't had description, licence or wathever). My first experience with this was really bad and annoying, including the vast time it took to load that cartoon intro, or whatever it was, before being allowed to move to the old upload form. Maybe it's me, since so many people seem to like it. I'm not good with this "user experience" based stuff, I hate Vector as well, with all my heart.--- Darwin Ahoy! 14:45, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Need support for multi-licensing

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:6.0a1) Gecko/20110523 Firefox/6.0a1

I prefer to multi-license my images under GFDL/CC-BY-SA, but this tool only allows you to select one license. King of 18:22, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There's an argument that multi-licensing doesn't make a lot of sense as a recommended option, because a) it's not required for the media files to be usable in GFDL documents, at least not in the long-standing interpretation of the GFDL that WMF has followed, b) few projects outside WMF use GFDL in the first place, and it's a very odd license to use for media files. On the other hand, Wikimedia Commons has lots of users who have specific licensing preferences, or who upload batches of files with highly specialized licensing templates. For both those cases, UploadWizard should offer better support, perhaps with a standard customization tool.--Eloquence (talk) 23:36, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are many cases where multi-licensing makes sense. One of them is uploads of {{PD-old}} and {{PD-art}}, which can be complemented with licenses regarding the photo itself. Another is photographs under freedom of panorama, of works of art recently into public domain, etc. All of these may require additional licensing tags. And this is only the tip of the iceberg.--- Darwin Ahoy! 23:55, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes -- my comment was referring to the implication of making GFDL+CC-BY-SA part of the default selection. We should definitely have a mechanism that allows for flexibly specifying templates that aren't in the default sets.--Eloquence (talk) 02:02, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It might make sense to make the first-step button more prominent.--Eloquence (talk) 23:32, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wizard should allow rename of files on first step

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1

I went back to this thing to find out what went wrong with my experience, and why I found it so annoying. I was trying to upload some derivatives of Commons files, which still had the same name of the original file. That's why it never allowed me to go after first steep.

This wizard should allow the rename of files, as any other upload tool that I know. If it remains as it is, besides not allowing the rename of files with the same name as files already on Commons, it will increase greatly the number of files with typos, wrong descriptions or pure nonsense. - Darwin Ahoy! 23:51, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The current behavior is that if you're uploading a file with the same name, you should definitely be able to get past the first step -- it'll only prompt you to change the title in the "Describe" step. It won't allow you to go past the first step if you're uploading a file with the same content as an existing one, or if you're uploading a file that was previously deleted. Can you confirm whether that's the behavior you're seeing?
Also see my comment above: #uploading of derivative works.--Eloquence (talk) 02:00, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... I couldn't reproduce the behaviour in my test, and actually (unfortunately) managed to upload a file with the wizard for the first time. There were two things there that confused me: First it asked to upload a file before asking the licences and the rest of the stuff. I would expect that the command there would be next and not upload. Then before what I believed was a last step ("Use" or something like that), with a button saying next, it actually uploaded the thing, to my despair, since it was a test picture and I was expecting to cancel it in the end: File:HusenilMuhammadAfandia.jpg. It should be made more obvious that that "next" button is indeed the "upload" button, and you don't have another chance to cancel. On the other hand, the first "upload" is quite confusing, since it doesn't upload anything (at least to Commons). I also don't like that "donate" message, though I could live with that.--- Darwin Ahoy! 03:21, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The new Wizard should let users upload images using filenames of images deleted earlier. By now this is only permitted by the old form. This bug should be fixed. Regards, /Orrling (talk) 20:14, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For an accurate source description 255 symbols is too short sometimes. Citing a book or journal + some interent reference quickly goes over this limit, for giving some example I randomly picked File:Stygiocaris stylifera.jpg. I tried the wizard myself yesterday and was not able to provide the full source for File:Franzen - Sala de música de la Excma Sra Duquesa Viuda de Bailén.jpg, I had to add the online source by hand. --Martin H. FAL

The licensing option "Miscellaneous reasons" is a problem.

  • The only license in it, "Free Artistic License", not refers to an en:Artistic License but to the en:Free Art License, {{FAL}}.
  • The name of this license is ambigous, people also in the past often use it wrong to lable random artworks that are surely not licensed under FAL by their copyright holders but that are in many cases public domain and {{PD-Art}}. Infact the FAL license option is a big problem, the FAL license is very rare on the internet, the Category:FAL is a mixture of wrongly tagged files.
  • The section not refers to a "Miscellaneous reasons" but to something like "The copyright holder published this work with a suitable free license". There are no miscellaneous reasons reasons for uploading something to Commons, there are only public domain or free license reasons.

I suggest to:

  • rename the option "Free Artistic License" --> "Free Art License " (with a clear visible identification)
  • rename the section "Miscellaneous reasons" --> "The copyright holder published this work with another suitable free licence"
  • move the renamed section below the Creative Commons & flickr sections. Other suitable free licenses can be added to this section in future.

upload of own photos failed

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1

I've been trying to upload a batch of photos. One of them, the wizard states that it looks like an image from an image host. Rubbish - it's my own photo. I can live with those accusations, but that the whole process then seizes up is most annoying. It won't let me do anything else, but I have to start from scratch (minus the photo that is apparently not mine, of course). Schwede66 07:34, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not user friendly at all - too many stages and too much subtlety. The old form was actually easier to use!

Uploaded File:Aubigny Qld.png using the wizard last night, could not figure out how to attribute another user on Commons for the source image. Either it tried to prevent me uploading at all, or allowed me to do so only by not indicating (I had to edit it in afterwards). Having an explicit option referencing another Commons image and providing a space to enter a username to attribute it to would be an improvement. Orderinchaos (talk) 06:30, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  1. I'd like to have a possibility to license my work under GFDL and all CC-By-SA without having to edit all uploaded files afterwards.
  2. There are sometimes errors: Browser, Server, Connection. It would be nice to have a "resume incomplete upload" option.
  3. Some users are confused because they forget to press the "Add category" button. When cursor leaves this field, category should be added automatically.
  4. It would be nice to have the possibility for multi-selection in the file-selection dialog.
  5. Good work. Continue improving it. -- RE rillke questions? 00:22, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Whenever I choose a tag in the new upload wizard that says "US Federal Government Source", the wizard tags the image as "Uploaded from Flicker." The Flicker-checker-bot then tries to determine where on Flicker the image was from, and everything goes kaflonky from there.

Flickr template added, while there is no link to Flickr

I am getting pretty bored of doing edits like this one. Already on May 19th I reported here that it seems that Upload Wizard adds {{FlickrReview}} to images tagged with {{PD-USGov}}. Of course the FlickreviewR bot does not find a link to a flickr file and the image ends up in Category:Unsourced Flickr images reviewed by FlickreviewR. That category I check almost daily. Since UploadWizard is the default uploader, most of the maintaining job in that Category is removing unjustified FlickreviewR tags. Please, can someone really look into this? Also I need feedback. I complained about this yesterday and have heard nothing. Smallbones (talk) 17:56, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The current blacklist situation is horrible.
Commons has two different blacklists that are used to check filenames. MediaWiki:Filename-prefix-blacklist and MediaWiki:Titleblacklist. MediaWiki:Titleblacklist appears to be broken since the 1.17 deployment, per bugzilla:28466. So, files that should be rejected by the old upload form because their files match the Commons blacklist are not currently blocked, and a lot of standard camera filenames etc. go through.
At the same time, UploadWizard is implementing its own mini-JavaScript version of the title blacklist to catch the most common issues. This implementation is 1) prone to error in case a regular expression in the implementation is matched differently in different browsers, 2) redundant, 3) largely working. So, filenames that should be blocked are blocked by UploadWizard, but there may be issues of false positives. I can't tell you at a glance whether your match is a false positive, or actually a prohibited title rule per the blacklist developed and maintained by the community.
So, it's a mess, and UW is actually behaving more correctly right now than the old upload form. We need to fix the blacklist code, and the community probably needs to do some pruning to ensure that the rules on it still make sense. It's one of the big issues on our to-do list to sort out after 1) improved thumbnail generation (see Neil's comment here), 2) improved upload completion (see my note on files hanging in UW).--Eloquence (talk) 20:52, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How can you say with a straight face that the "UW is actually behaving more correctly right now than the old upload form"? It behaves so correctly that nobody but unaware newbies that still aren't tired of serving as guinea pigs is using it.--- Darwin Ahoy! 21:39, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Every time I've attempted to upload files with the wizard over the past few days, I've received error messages that the server is unable to display thumbnails of the uploaded images. Problem happens regardless of the time of day and quantity of uploaded images in the batch. This does not prevent me from continuing with the wizard.

In other news, I'd like to praise the minds behind the upload wizard for its features and ease of use. Because of this, I've found myself trawling my photo collection for old photos that may be of use and uploading them (in the past I would only upload individual images if I knew I could then add them to a Wikipedia article). So where is a person supposed to click????

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1

The only working button I find on the old form is the link to the Help Desk. Fortunately "back to the old form" is present in text above it, and is what I've used, but notably the Upload button does NOT work either, nor does clicking on the green OK, or the graphics for work I made myself.

Furthermore, the case I have at the moment is one of uploading very low resolution text in block letters because I am astounded at how easy it is to read at low zoom and how difficult it is to read at high zoom and wanted to ask a question about it at the wikipedia refdesk. Now as I understand simple text is not copyrightable (it's also not a trademark, but just one small piece of a logo). But it isn't my work either. The page should have a case for works too simple to copyright. Wnt (talk) 23:06, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I understand your "where is a person supposed to click" question. "Select a media file to donate" button is still not a button. However, I've found a nice comparison that may help you guys out. On the upload screen, "Add another file" does not appear to be a button, but "Upload" is!

On the Release rights screen, "Next" is a full button. So how come some of these are buttons, others are not? (I still have to move my cursor around (up) to find the link.) – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 06:28, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think you will notice that they actually are buttons, but what you mean to say is that your mouse doesn't turn into a pointing hand and the button doesn't have a depress effect. The reason why is that there is some HTML trickery going on to make the form work the way it does. Browsers render the file upload control in many different ways, but in UploadWizard they all look the same, and furthermore, it can be styled in any way. If the lack of button-ness really disturbs you I can work harder on fixing that. I actually have code that does the right thing in many browsers and does the cursor and depress effect, but I disabled it a while back because it was interfering with something else and never got back to this. I hope to have this feature in a future iteration. The UploadWizard model was designed to allow everything from Internet Explorer 6 to Chrome whatever-it-is-this-week to do multiple files, one at a time OR multiple files at a time. Unfortunately this has delayed getting multiple files in the easiest way. NeilK (talk) 18:00, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

uploading the same image twice

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1

by mistake I uploaded the same image twice. As thumbnails do not show up until upload was done, I did not recognize it until it was too late. After the initial upload is done, there is no way to skip single selected images (Would be an improvement, if this could be possible).

Uploading the same image twice with identical names (the intention was to skip the second upload), lets the second upload hang forever. The first one was ok. --Herzi Pinki (talk) 19:30, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is correct. I am afraid this is a usability decision on our part. The concept of using the upload tool to upload a new version of a file makes no sense to most people. They assume that to make a new version, one goes to the page for the file. The vast majority of the time, people are not trying to upload over an old file, they have chosen a similar name by accident. NeilK (talk) 17:58, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

From another imaghost?

Twice I uploaded File:Picnic House brick wall jeh.jpg which I snapped two months ago. Twice I got the message: "This looks like a file you obtained from another imagehost. Please make the title more meaningful. Also, double check that you have the rights to publish it on Wikimedia Commons."

Yes, it's all mine and I never sent it anywhere except my own computers. There was no problem on the third attempt, using the old upload page. Did a bug cause this false alarm? Incidentally, on the first attempt, I also uploaded another file and had no way to proceed out of the alarm page to publish that one, which to me suggests a second problem in the wizard. On the whole I'm delighted with the new method but please don't discontinue the old page. Jim.henderson (talk) 20:14, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I could bet taht it's because your file starts with "pic". The message "This looks like a file you obtained from another imagehost", actually, is very impolite, even offensive, and completely pointless. I don't know why they have placed it there.--- Darwin Ahoy! 21:04, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This button (the first you see when you click the "upload file" link to the left) is a bit odd - shouldn't it read "Select a media file to upload"? It's not obvious what uploading a file has to do with donating (which is typically used to refer to money or physical objects, not a copy of a file). Mike Peel (talk) 10:10, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I assume that this wording was chosen to indicate already at the first step of the uploading process that it's about donating images to the public. Gestumblindi (talk) 11:18, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But it's not! The uploader is releasing images to the public, with the expectation of being attributed (or, if they are uploading a low resolution version of their image, then potentially financial recompense for their higher resolution version). They're not donating the image at all! Mike Peel (talk) 19:21, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The batch upload ability is great. It could be better if you could choose multiple files at the same time, rather than being forced to continuously press the "add another file" button.

Also, once uploaded, it would be great if you could add the same description or extra text (e.g., coordinates or user-created templates) to the batch like you do with the batch license application.

Otherwise, great upgrade.

It allowed you to categorise your file in a non existing category, still.--- Darwin Ahoy! 11:22, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is correct behavior, in my opinion (although I never managed to have it save any categories). Upload first, create category later. Nothing wrong with it (I do it regularly, so it can't be wrong). NVO (talk) 20:25, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It can't be right as well. The category added by this user is possibly acceptable, even if non existent, the problem is that newbies like this one never create the categories after adding them, and the file remains uncategorised while not appearing in the uncategorised media categories, making it very hard to find. Worst case are non-English speakers adding categories in their native language. I've found yesterday at least two French users which categorised every file they uploaded in UW (and they were a lot of them) with French named categories, like Ecrivains and the sort. It would be better if they couldn't add no categories at all than be allowed to add such things without even realizing the mistake they are doing, and without any system to warn them afterwards, as it is now.--- Darwin Ahoy! 08:03, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't that just mean that the non-English categories should be created as (bot-aware) redirects to the corresponding English categories? Mike Peel (talk) 19:33, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps, but those kind of redirects are deleted on sight here, usually. Even alternative ways of spelling the category in English such as "Austrian painters" and "Painters from Austria" are generally against consensus and deleted when caught. At least these last are something that should be discussed: It's already such a burden to remember all the English names for everything when you are not a native English speaker, let alone the precise variation Commons use. I completely fail to understand why there is such a bloody war on redirects, really.--- Darwin Ahoy! 21:36, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If this is the case, then I would completely agree with you - given that such a redirect costs Commons nothing, and provides benefits both in mono- and multi-lingual senses, that seems to be a very odd consensus to me. If you can point me towards the location where that consensus was reached, then I would very much appreciate it. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:26, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is something that is being done for long, long time. Category:Austrian painters, for instance, ws deleted in 2007. When I joined the project in 2009, I seem to recall a large purge on those redirects as well, including some I created. Unfortunately I cannot point you to the precise origins of this habit, though Foroa certainly can, so you may talk to him. If I well recall from past conversations, part of the argument has to do with keeping users from adding wiki-en style categories, and educating them by not leaving that option available. This never worked, IMO, since it was always possible to add those cats, the only difference is that they would show as red links and would not categorise anything. As it is now with the new UW, even the red link are not shown, so it's all trouble and no gain. And from the moment we had bots automatically moving files from redirected categories into the proper category, I really can't see what is the problem with those redirects.--- Darwin Ahoy! 23:15, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
IIRC cat redirs show up in HotCat's suggestion list which always confuses me. Since I wonder: why the heck are there two cats describing the same. And so I always have to check if both are the same when categorizing images. That is the only annoying thing with redirs. Maybe hotcat could be changed to exclude a redir in the list if the target cat or another redir with the same target is there. Or at least mark redirs in the list. However, catredirs are probably a bad solution for internationalizing the cat system. Just imagine a category rename with dozens of redirs to it... Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:44, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, they show up at HotCat (as do non-existant cats, which is even worst), so a big prolixity of redirects is indeed an issue. However, in cases like "Austrian painters" or "Municipalities of/in Brazil" it is not problematic, and is actually helpful. Anyway, if you chose the redirect instead of the real cat, Hotcat will change it automatically to the proper cat, so it is not a problem.--- Darwin Ahoy! 04:09, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, selecting the redir cat works - but if we have "Cat. A" and "Cat A2" (a redir to cat A) and I see both entries in the list an first select "Cat. A" then I do not know if Cat A2 is something slightly different which may also apply. And so I have to check it. Like "Standing men" and "Men standing" (fictive example). ... so the upload wizard should have its functionality expanded? Is such an expansion planned? Mike Peel (talk) 19:30, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is lacking several other options the old forms have. Some were intentionally (by WMF) removed to make it simpler because they are used seldom and newbies do not need them (like {{PD-textlogo}} → leads to (wrong) logo uploads as own work... ;-) ) some were probably removed simply because of complexity and because the wizard is still a first (test) version (clearly mentioned at Commons:Hochladen and Commons:Upload/nl). There should be a convenient way to allow for the licensing of the photo itself and of the object beeing photographed. The object is usually PD-old, but if it is a 3-D object the photograph of the object needs also to be licensed. Of course you can add a {{PD-old]] manually, but the text in the description should somehow explain which of the conflicting licences applies to what. Wuselig (talk) 09:19, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your uploader is very valuable. I have by now uploaded some hundreds of photos, whereas, using earlier tools I had very nearly given up on uploading! But... If I forget to title a pic correctly in such a way that it slips through, but before the last phase of the upload, then I have to do it all again!!! I have wasted hours on that. If I take too long between entering some pictures and the final update (at least I think that is the problem) then I also have to start over. More hours! I think that sometimes it has accepted ten pics in a batch, but then loops on the last upload... I still use it (with circumspection, but if anyone has ideas on improvements...!

Cheers, and thanks so far,

Flaw in the feedback mechanism

I provided feedback on this page via the feedback form on the upload wizard - but it didn't (as far as I could spot) tell me that it was leaving the feedback on this page, nor recommend that I watch this page for responses to my feedback, nor suggest that I look on this page for feedback on a similar topic to my question. I applaud the introduction of a method of feedback that doesn't require someone to hit the 'edit' button or come to grips with the edit interface - but if that mechanism doesn't also lead to a way to learn the feedback to that mechanism then it's not particularly useful to those providing the feedback... Mike Peel (talk) 19:23, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mike, a direct link to this page should be in the feedback popup.--Eloquence (talk) 07:46, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes, I see it now. I think the reason I didn't spot it initially was because it's linked to on the form where you leave the comment, but once you submit then the box goes away - I would have expected a message saying something along the lines of "Thanks for your feedback; it's been left on this page; follow that page if you're interested in discussing this further." A heads-up about where the feedback will be left is good, but a reminder afterwards of where it's gone would also be useful. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 08:17, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Call it doodles or call it tutorials... You can shut off the tutorial on your next visit and your straight in the programm. Also if you don't drag the picture exactly onto the 'select' button, it shows the picture by itself and when you press back all the other pictures that are ready to be uploaded are gone. I also uploaded 10 files and spent ages renaming them and then they got stuck on the publishing stage. There was no option to try again or go back a stage. Rights release

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0

I have uploaded a number of files and tried to release them into public domain, using the Creative Commons Zero license radio-button. This produces a bug: instead of {{self|cc-zero}}, I get many repetitions of "self" within the template, e.g. {{self|self|self|self|self|self|self|self|cc-zero}}.

Can this be fixed? Better still, can I set public domain as the default preference for my uploads? Thanks. --Ammodramus (talk) 21:20, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not able to reproduce this in FF or Chrome either with single or multiple file uploads. Are you able to repeat this, and if so, do you have time to provide exact steps to reproduce?--Eloquence (talk) 05:15, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm using Firefox. The problem doesn't occur on the first batch of files that I upload; nor does it occur on a second batch if I click the "Upload file" link in the left-margin menu of Commons. It has occurred when I've uploaded additional batches of files using the "Upload more files" button at the bottom of the final page of the upload wizard sequence (the page with "Thanks for uploading!" at the top).
For what it's worth, I've checked the "Skip this step in the future" checkbox on the bottom of the first page of the upload wizard. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I will experiment later; right now, I have a slow connection, and the library's about to close and kick me out anyhow.
--Ammodramus (talk) 01:51, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Have experimented further. The problem seems to be associated with the use of the "Upload more files" button on the bottom of the last page of the upload wizard sequence. Each time I click it and upload a new batch, it adds another "self|" to the license; thus the first batch of files came through OK, with "{{self|cc-zero}}"; the second batch had an error, with "{{self|self|cc-zero}}"; the third had "{{self|self|self|cc-zero}}", etc.
After several iterations of this, I clicked the "Upload file" link in the left-margin menu, checked "Skip this step in the future" on the bottom of the first page, and uploaded another batch. The license came through fine; when I again clicked "Upload file" in the left margin, and uploaded yet another batch, there were no problems with the license.

Don't upload an 200MB .ogg video

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; de; rv:1.9.2.18) Gecko/20110614 Firefox/3.6.18

I try to upload an .ogg video with a resolution of 720p for 2.5 hours. My Task-Manager (Windows 7) says that nothing has been transmitted since the opload process has started.

.ogg files with smaller file sizes can be uploaded without any problems. Medvedev (talk) 20:54, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is a general 100 MB limit per file for uploads (see the text in the old upload form). I guess it also applies for the upload wizard. Compress it more or split it. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:23, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank You! I also thought that the filesize is to big, but I was'n able to find this information in any Help article. --Medvedev (talk) 16:48, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

multiple uploads, same license page for all

User agent: Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.1; U; de) Presto/2.9.168 Version/11.50

It would be great tu upload multiple image and "copy 'n paste" the full description page of another file which is already uploaded (so a classic "bare" uploader with multiple files) Mabdul (talk) 21:43, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I got help in the IRC channel and got the tool The Communist. thanks. Mabdul (talk) 22:12, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is thoroughly useless. Ditch it. Kelisi (talk) 23:35, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Adding categories with colons in them

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0

The category autocomplete doesn't work properly for categories with colons in them. The part of the category name after the colon doesn't show up in the list of options.

For example, I found this problem when trying to add the category: Photographs by User:99of9 99of9 (talk) 05:18, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
