Could you please explain...
You deleted :Category:Murghab River. I think this was premature. Did you notice that no one went on record in the discussion that the category should be deleted?

I think I raised a key question, which was unaddressed.

:Category:Murghab River was created first. Later :Category:Morghab River was created. The elements in the old category were manually moved to the new category, without any prior discussion. This was probably a newbie mistake. The individual who created the new category started the steps to initiate a discussion over deleting the old category, by placing a Delete template on it. But they didn't complete that initiation. In particular, they left the Delete template unpopulated. This too was probably a newbie mistake.

I think that an article existed on the English language wikipedia that used the newer transliteration is a bad reason to replace one category with another. As I suggested in the discussion, given that there is no standard for transliterating Afghan names, I think the only good reason for deleting the old category in favor of the new one would be if the Afghan government had officially adopted one transliteration over another.

Further, I requested that if we found one transliteration was the official transliteration used by the Afghan government, other transliterations should not be deleted, but should be be to redirections.

So, could you please explain the actions you took?

I didn't say this in the deletion discussion, but I will point out now, that if we find the Afghan government has an official transliteration it may turn out to be a third transliteration. In that case I think both :Category:Murghab River and :Category:Morghab River should redirect to a new category using the Afghan government's official name. First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Ezarate!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Marking images for deletion

Thanks for your recent efforts to mark images with copyright violations. When you do this, though, don't forget to follow the steps mentioned in the deletion template, such as notifying the original uploader.

Thanks for uploading File:Abel Santa Cruz.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Abel Santa Cruz.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:PIC 4243.JPG. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk. The file you added has been deleted. If you believe that this file was not a derivative work of a non-free work, you may request undeletion.

Missing evidence of permission?

Me puedes explicar por que has marcado dos de mis fotos como missing evidence of permission? Las he puesto como release to public domain. No tienen copyright y yo soy el autor. Cual es el problema? Miguel Andrade (talk) 22:22, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think objects holding a label (but not the label alone) are fine. There are tons of photos of those. See related discussion here [2]. The shape of a bottle can be patented but I think they cannot be copyrighted because bottles are a utilitarian article, see here [3]. Miguel Andrade (talk) 14:23, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You're now a filemover

Hi Ezarate, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one.
 • Please do not tag redirects as Speedy. Other projects, like InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
 • For guideline when to rename a file, please see Commons:File renaming and Commons:File naming.

Falklands coins

At Commons:Deletion requests/File:Moneda Islas Malvinas Reverso.png, I added another image of the same coin and the category Category:Coins of the Falkland Islands as well. Can you delete those? (See en:Coins of the Falkland Islands for info on the territory's coins, which show that they'll all be copyright until 2025.) —innotata 14:56, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Prince

Hi,

you are one of the few moderators active at this hour. Could you please take away the protection of File:Nl-Prince-article.ogg? I have made a new version of the file and need to upload it.

Saludos. --DJ Nietzsche (talk) 14:09, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Luke Ford permission

There is an established OTRS ticket for the Luke Ford images - see here. Tabercil (talk) 03:29, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Were you able to resolve your issues on this? It's just that I want to try and head off anything that could lead to a repeat of the fiasco that's mentioned at Commons:Village pump/Archive/2008/07#Luke ford permission. Tabercil (talk) 17:36, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have the headers of these email? I'll ask to another OTRS member --Ezarateesteban 17:48, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh... that's a looong time ago. I *might* still have them, but I do remember doing the "forward to OTRS with full headers" bit once before so I'm betting they're already in the system there. Maybe not under that ticket though... can you search for any other OTRS tickets referencing Luke Ford? Tabercil (talk) 19:31, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nope... no longer have them that far back. I do have a follow-up exchange I made with Luke back in March 2007 where he says the exchange is proper... send me an email and I'll forward it to you to look at it. Tabercil (talk) 21:47, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Aguardo tu respuesta, Fma12 (talk) 14:49, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New Admin Help

Is this useful?. I ask because it took me a couple of weeks to learn about the first and I just learned about the second today. If it is helpful, would you like to translate it?      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:45, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think that it's usefull, I will translate it later, thanks for the advise Ezarateesteban 18:05, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please explain...

You deleted Category:Murghab River. I think this was premature. Did you notice that no one went on record in the discussion that the category should be deleted?

I think I raised a key question, which was unaddressed.

Category:Murghab River was created first. Later Category:Morghab River was created.

In that case I think both Category:Murghab River and Category:Morghab River should redirect to a new category using the Afghan government's official name.
