First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hi RaffiKojian,

Thanks for sharing these great images on Commons. Following a request at a noticeboard, I removed Category:Plants from files also in Category:Unidentified plants. This as Category:Unidentified plants is a direct subcategory of Category:Plants and covers all aspects of the files.

BTW If you can make available additional information on the images, I'm sure the specialists at Commons would appreciate. -- User:Docu at 11:26, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In order to organize the images, we thought about moving them to Category:Unidentified plants at Huntington Gardens. At the same time, I'd like to rename Category:Gardenology.org to Category:Images from Gardenology.org (closer to the category name used by other images sources). What do you think of it? -- User:Docu at 15:16, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(moved from User talk:Docu)
Hi. I guess both of your proposals are okay with me, though I am going to upload many more from the Huntington, as well as taken at other places around the world, so I'll continue to add them to the unidentified plants category. I'd like to add more info - but as you can imagine, the amount of time it would take is enormous. I'd also like to request that all the images I uploaded that have gardenology at the beginning of the filename be renamed to gardenology.org for consistency, or deleted so I can reupload them with the proper name. Thanks! --RaffiKojian (talk) 20:45, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(/moved from User talk:Docu)
Hi, thanks for your response. If you plan to upload many more files, you might want to create a subpage at Commons:Batch_uploading and briefly outline your planned uploads. This facilitates coordination and has different people checking various aspects. A link on Commons talk:WikiProject Tree of Life could invite specialists, such as MPF. MPF seems to prefer that more specific unidentified plants categories be used.
I will go ahead and move the current files to the two categories, but I can't rename the files. You might want to bring this up on the batch uploading subpage, but given the number of files, this looks like hard to do once they are uploaded. -- User:Docu at 21:04, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. --RaffiKojian (talk) 21:46, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hold on

Hi RaffiKojian, I see you're uploading quite a lot of images. I have some remarks:

  1. Might be nice to put {{En}} around the description
  2. You currently use {{Gardenology}} to indicate attribution. I would rather have you use the attribution field of {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}. This way we don't have an additional custom template and it's available in lot's of languages.
  3. Could you use {{Date}}? This way the date is available in a lot of different languages.
  4. Did you confirm permission with Commons:OTRS?
  5. The plants are currently unidentified, do you plan on identifying the images?

Multichill (talk) 22:09, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Multichill,

  1. You mean?: {en|describe the file here}
  2. I can add other categories as well, but I want the gardenology category to easily track the many thousands of photos I'm going to add, so that I can easily update the message/category within the template. I will, in fact, update it now. I think it will illustrate my point of it being useful to have a message for them all.
  3. I should be able to.
  4. I am the holder of the copyright.
  5. When I am eventually done uploading, you may understand why the scope of what you are asking, and why I cannot do it all. Fortunately, this is a wiki, and others can participate.

--RaffiKojian (talk) 22:29, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RaffiKojian,

In the meantime, I finished moving the current upload to Category:Unidentified plants at Huntington Gardens. For future uploads, it would be easier if to add a similar category directly.

  • For (1) above, a sample change: diff
  • For (3) above, it's sufficient to remove "taken on" [1] to display a localized date. The date should be the date a picture was taken anyways and using {{Date}} just adds complexity.

Cheers. -- User:Docu at 07:04, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Corrections

Thanks for your many contributions to Commons. Please take a look at this example edit, which, when implemented will save patrollers a lot of time:

  1. Dont put source in author and author in source. use them seperately
  2. Leave permission empty unless there is a permisison required, but this isn't the case because the Gardenology-wiki is freely licensed and publicly states so on their website
  3. Dont put attribution in the Description field.

Thanks, –Krinkletalk 01:07, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Krinkle - I've made some changes, but I'm uploading with commonist and don't know exactly how to more the attribution text out of description field to go below. If you do know, please share. --RaffiKojian (talk) 04:06, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. It's fine. One thing though, does comminst require something to be put in the Permission field ? It's perfectly fine to leave it empty. It's purpuse is to for example proof the license release if the source website does not publicly state it's license, or if you're uploading someone elses work. but this is not the case, so it's best left empty so that Commons automatically translated fallback appears instead of the English-only "See attribution", which is a license-requirement and not permission. –Krinkletalk 09:48, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unidentified plants

Thank you! That's what Commons urgently required: more unidentified plants. Hitherto I was anxious about having too little unidentified plants to meet the project scope. Now you solved that problem. -- Ies (talk) 21:14, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My pleasure! I have thousands more I'm going to upload, but it's usually a challenge for me to do so. --RaffiKojian (talk) 23:30, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I've already got over 5,000 photos in the following category that nobody seems to have noticed for months and months: Category:Unidentified plants at Huntington Gardens --RaffiKojian (talk) 23:34, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, sorry for telling directly that in my opinion it´s not useful uploading lots of photos without at least categorizing them. How do you think about it? --4028mdk09 (talk) 23:33, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your uploading looks like vandalism to me - would you like to be blocked? --4028mdk09 (talk) 23:40, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is a wiki, and many people can help with the categorization. Like you for example. --RaffiKojian (talk) 23:42, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I think you are totally wrong in this case! Surely its a wiki, and lots of people doing a lot of work like categorizing, helping each other. It seems to me you only being like a little lazybone not categorizing yourself although you could. By the way, I mistrust the source beeing free. So have a look at COM:AN/U. --4028mdk09 (talk) 23:51, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"Lazybone"? Are you serious? Taking tens of thousands of photos, processing and uploading them is something a "little lazybone" would do? And you mistrust the source being free?? *I* took them, and have released them with the self tag. Are you calling me a liar? Please stop harassing me and do something productive. --RaffiKojian (talk) 00:00, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RaffiKojian,
a further hint: filenames on Commons should be descriptive in regard to the depicted object. The naming scheme of your recent uploads, such as "Gardenology.org-IMG 2459 ucla09", surely isn't descriptive at all. Before uploading additional files, you should really reflect whether it might be better to first identify the plants/images (if possible) and thereafter to choose a descriptive filename. Of course, this can't be done with images that you can't identify by yourself. --Túrelio (talk) 23:42, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I realize that is ideal, but I also do not have months of free time to label these photos. Thanks for uploading File:Gardenology.org-IMG_2599_ucla09.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

4028mdk09 (talk) 23:35, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please be careful using this tag. The license is VERY clear and suitable for commons. --RaffiKojian (talk) 23:42, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
