Brief[edit]

Current logo for WLM

Wiki Loves Monuments is a photo contest that engages the Wikimedia community and the community at large to work at making pictures of listed monuments around the world. 2011 will be the first time that Wiki Loves Monuments happens in a coordinated fashion and on a wide scale, in Europe. More about the project on this page.

In order to make this a success, several Wikimedia chapters and groups of community members are working on coordinating the organisation of the event. The logo will be used on promotional material (leaflets, swag etc.) for participants, on posters to advertise the event and on brochures to present the project to potential partner institutions.

We need a cool logo that will represent both the "serious" spirit of the event (we're talking about "governement" listed monuments) but that will also engage community participants and make them proud of displaying it as much as possible. Although the event is coordinated this year for Europe, we hope to make this a recurring and world-wide event in the years to come.

Hence this contest to get a great logo.

Dates and deadlines[edit]

  • The logo competition runs as of now (as you read this page), the last submissions must be entered before the 17th of April 23:59 UTC. (After that date, we might allow variations/adaptations of a same logo to be presented by designers to the voters, but we're not sure).
  • Voting starts on the 19th of April 2011 at 0:00 UTC and closes on the 27th of April at 23:59 UTC.

  • Read the brief above to make sure you know what we're looking for.
  • Read the rules below to make sure your logo qualifies
  • Comments are welcome and even desired during the whole submission process, so that people can amend/change their logos as required.

Rules[edit]

Must rules

  1. the submitted logo must be SVG.
  2. the submitted logo must be CC-BY or CC-BY-SA [1]
  3. the submitted logo must be easily usable on promotion material (caps, mugs,buttons, posters, leaflets etc.) and on many color backgrounds (see visual guidelines below)

Nice to have rules

  1. the submitted logo does not have to be a nth derivative of the Wikimedia Community logo, unleash your creativity
  2. the submitted logo must be recognisable from afar
  3. the submitted logo should be as "language neutral" as possible. This means for example that text should be rendered in font rather than in vectors to allow for possible translations/adaptations.
  4. the submitted logo should be as "international" as possible, and speak to the wider community.
  5. the submitted logo should be time and location neutral, but can allow for variations (such as year, maybe place)

Visual guidelines - Do's and don'ts
In order to make sure that the logo is suited for our purposes, please keep these rules in mind:

  1. the submitted logo should have no or very straightforward gradient (gradient is difficult to render on swag)
  2. the submitted logo should have sharp contours (no messy background, also difficult to render on swag)
  3. the submitted logo should be easily rendered in black & white and/or grayscale (watch the contrast)
  4. the submitted logo should be easily scalable (a big-size logo must look as nice as a small-size logo)

The rules may change at a whim (except the must rules, these won't change), cos this is a wiki.

Notes[edit]

  1. ↑ By choosing to make this logo CC-BY or CC-BY-SA, I made a personal judgement call. I consider WLM to be a community event, albeit run mainly by Wikimedia organisations. Since the event should try and draw as many people in, even if they are not in any way affiliated to a chapter or the WMF, I consider that a free logo makes more sense. It also allows for easy derivation and adaptation in different languages, which a copyrighted logo by design does not really allow.   • Voting starts on the 19th of April 2011 at 0:00 UTC and closes on the 27th of April at 23:59 UTC.

Winner[edit]

  • The winner will be the logo with the most votes in favour. In case of a tie, logo with the least oppose votes will win. Should there be again a tie, the WLM teams reserve the right to decide, which logo is best suited for our purpose. Depending how this goes, we might have to arrange the winning equation to reflect reality of consensus better. (something with taking into account the ratio of support vs oppose or so).
