NZ location maps mass deletion

Hi multichill, the New Zealand location map File:NZ-Twizel.png that you uploaded has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests, the discussion is at Commons:Deletion_requests/2010/04/01#NZ_location_maps. Benchill (talk) 07:50, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Your suggestion is needed

Re: - detached heads of borobudur statues - I started this //commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Borobudur_Buddha_sculptures_-_removed I am almost certain it is a non-functional/no-goer category name - would you be so kind as to offer a suggestion or clarification that something like Borobudur removed sculptures or Borobudur moved sculptures might be better? - any suggestions would be appreciated SatuSuro (talk) 13:07, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I noticed the category, but I can't really make up a better name. Multichill (talk) 13:37, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
OK I will check against some other items that will probably resolve the issue SatuSuro (talk) 13:52, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Wow that was a good summary for candi sewu ! SatuSuro (talk) 13:30, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I make these with a little tool called sum-it-up. I made a gadget for it so other people can use it too. You can enable it in your preferences -> gadgets -> Tools for categories -> "Sum-it-up: Easily add descriptions and language links to categories". Have fun! Multichill (talk) 13:37, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you once again - as always veryuseful info!!! SatuSuro (talk) 13:52, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

BArch attribution

Hi Multichill, good idea and now correct. I altered the BArch-authors with the creator templates

This should have a separate botrun too. I Noticed that while editing File:Bundesarchiv Bild 101I-567-1503B-23, Gran Sasso, Lastensegler, Hotel Campo Imperatore.jpg I initially forgot to add the creator. --Martin H. (talk) 16:52, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

In the first run I skipped all creator templates. In the second run, which is running now, I'm only going to do creator templates. I noticed some "unknown" popping up, these should be replaced by {{BArch-author-unknown}}. Probably going to do that later on. Multichill (talk) 08:49, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

py

Hi Multichill, as you participate in its development, would you double-check a problem we noted at Commons_talk:Tools/Commonist#.22could_not_login_to_commons.22 (not about Commonist): it seems that the token isn't sent correctly by login.py in the trunk version (probably one only notices after deleting cookies/installing from scratch, I suppose). -- User:Docu at 09:12, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Fixed by now. -- User:Docu at 09:35, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
File:WLANL_-_Artshooter_-_De_Smart.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

upload script

Hi, User:Duesentrieb told me that you are an expert with uploading many files to commons using a script. Could you tell me how that works? The reason is this: at the German wiktionary, we want to provide pronunciation samples (ogg files) for all words. I expect a total of some 50.000 files. These are to be recorded by several people in tranches of about 1000 files. Ideally those contributors should be able to upload it to commons without too much hassle and knowledge about the internals of commons etc. (I'm kind of spearheading the whole, but I don't have particular insight in the backbones of the wiki engine neither.) We will prepare additional information concerning the file description, such as in File:De-ahnden.ogg, for example. The descriptions vary depending on what type of word it is (noun, adjective etc.) and also, of course, of the word itself. So, uploading with commonist won't do the job (unless we do an a posteriori modification of the files using e.g. AWB, which however is quite time-consuming, so can't be done on a large scale). Thanks a lot,

Jakob.scholbach (talk) 08:03, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Jakob, sorry for the late reply, bit busy doing other things. You have to create pairs: File and file description. If you have these you can use Pywikipediabot to do the actual uploading. But that's probably hard for users to install or is someone doing a central upload? Maybe you should drop by in #wikimedia-commons to discus this. Multichill (talk) 18:02, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Thank you. It would really be a lot better if there were no particular skills nor installation requirements necessary for the upload. Is there no "simple" way, about as simple as commonist?
On the other hand, we could collect the data first, and then send it to somebody who is into Python. Would you in that case be willing to help us with the upload? Jakob.scholbach (talk) 18:50, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Sure, just don't know when I'm going to have time. Multichill (talk) 20:44, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Quick help from You very, very needed !

Hello. I'd like to transfer this file: de:Datei:ForsterAlbert.jpg from German Wikipedia to The Wikimedia Commons, to use it in the other languages. Please, help check out if it is not illegal. Artur. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Artur Andrzej (talk • contribs) 10:59, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi! I think Multichill missed this notice. Questions about images could perhaps better be asked on Commons talk:Licensing because more users watch that page. I just checked the image and I do not think we could have it on Commons. Not without knowing who took the picture and when (s)he died. Sadly. --MGA73 (talk) 18:44, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Multichill,

At the time of writing I'm still working on it. But the first few things have been positioned over at Indonesia cat-matrix. Add, remove, expand, and colormark all you want. --Krinkletalk 00:15, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your work Krinkle. I think we're almost done with the bot part of categorization here. Multichill (talk) 20:47, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Can you help with that??

Hi, Can you help us upgrade the template, at least technically, I can improve it visually but I cant improve it technically. And I created a project page, but its still under construction. thank you. MaenK.A.Talk 17:42, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

I believe there are some licensing issues. I'll rather have that fixed first. Multichill (talk) 01:47, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Mass upload to Commons

Hello Multichill,

At Wikimédia France, the french local chapter, we concluded a partnership with the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The official announcement was made just today.

This partnership consists of 1400 books for Wikisource. They give us PNG images for each page, plus a XML ALTO file, containing the OCR and some metadata. Early tests and rough guesses give us 100 Mo per book.

User:Seb35 is working on converting the PNG to DjVu. User:Plyd and myself at extracting the information from the XML to wikitext. We would need help to transfer the files to Commons, and we thought you could help with that.

At the moment, the files are stocked at a BNF server. Wikimedia France does not its own servers (yeah, we know, it's kinda lame). Plyd said he could manage some space on its own servers (I would have to ask him again though). There we would run the scripts to make the DjVu

Given the file size, I have been told that we could request a sysadmin to do a server-side upload (though we should be slightly under the limit). Seb was wondering what would be the upper file size limit ?

I have gotten involved into this project only recently, so I do not have full knowledge of the technical details yet. You could contact Seb35 for more details, but he is already quite busy and asked me to take care of the Commons-y part. As he and I see each other at least once a week, and this is not urgent matter, I guess that would do it.

I will try to be available on IRC to talk about this, if needed.

Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 20:01, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

P.S. Of course, when we are ready to start the upload, we would comply to the usual COM:BATCH process.

I forgot : here is an early test by Seb : File:Vinet - Boutmy - Quelques idées sur la création d'une faculté libre d'enseignement supérieur.djvu Jean-Fred (talk) 20:05, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Hi Jean-Frédéric, I don't think you're going to hit any limits when doing a server side import. Do you know how to prepare the data? It's actually quite easy. Somefile.png contains the image and somefile.txt contains the wikitext. You tar these all up and put it somewhere where one of the sysadmins can download it so it can be imported. I don't know how often I'll be online on irc. I'm currently in the US (somewhere in a plane above it ;-). Multichill (talk) 01:46, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Images uploaden

Groet, Wutsje (talk) 13:05, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

I worked this problem mentioned long time ago out now. Everything is listed there, its not the wrong image but the filename and the whole metadata is not correct for the images listed there. I worked out the incorrect filenames and commented it, I cant do the Metadata work. Maybe a reimport is the simplest sollution. I appreciate your ideas on that talkpage or here. --Martin H. (talk) 00:30, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Will have to dig deep for that. Do you have a toolserver account? If I remember correctly all the metadata is still there. Multichill (talk) 01:40, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
No, I dont have one, and realy have no technical abilities to do something with this. --Martin H. (talk) 02:12, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Tropenmuseum

Your bot has tagged this family with Category:Families of Indonesia. Unless the bot knows more than what the description gives away, it seems to be a mistake. Of course they might be immigrants from what is now Indonesia, but I don't see why they shouldn't be from somewhere else. I have not removed the tag. Dustsucker (talk) 02:24, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

There are many images of Surinam in Category:Huts in Indonesia. Please correct or revert your bot's miscategorizations. They are too many for me to fix. I'm afraid there may be a lot more in other categories. Dustsucker (talk) 03:04, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

That's odd, I'll have a look at it. Multichill (talk) 20:51, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

An uploader claims “own work” but is almost certainly wrong

Oh, and since you are an administrator, perhaps you know how to deal with another problem that seems like a lot of work to me:

I think each and every upload by TRC-South_Korea aka TRCK is stolen off the internet. For example, it's unlikely he or she really shot photos that serve as evidence to an important event in 20th century Korean history that many South Koreans were not fully aware of until recently. When the story surfaces, s/he remembers his/her old photos s/he took of the slaughter back in 1950, and donates them to the Commons. And s/he has not given up photography after the Korean War: S/he has donated another photo that we can also find on the internet,[1] where it is attributed to 이성은 who took it in 2005. Truly a remarkable career for a photographer.

The uploader would probably not deny they made a mistake, but I doubt they still look after their account. You're unlikely to get a reply. And it may be impossible for us to find the actual source for each and every image and contact it. If policy allows it, I'd just delete all. Dustsucker (talk) 03:58, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm a bit busy, I see the files are nominated now. Commons:Administrators' noticeboard is probably a better place. Multichill (talk) 20:52, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Would you be able to take a look at the request? It's there since one month now, and I don't know if the request is sensible, as I'm not a good category guy. Thanks, --The Evil IP address (talk) 14:43, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
