First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Commons FP[edit]

Please do not put your pictures in the Featured pictures catagory, like you did with Image:Portimao222.jpg, if they are not feature pictures. Images may be considered for Featured Status by being listed at Commons:Featured picture candidates, where the community will reach a consensus. If you want to nominate a picture for featured pictures you can do so here (please read the guidelines first). Thanks --Digon3 21:44, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Valternet!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Less useful smaller images[edit]

Stop replacing useful images with tiny versions. Please go through proper procedures with your requests. Sorry if Commons policies do not always match your changing whims, but your response looks to me to be close to vandalism. -- Infrogmation (talk) 21:43, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' noticeboard discussion[edit]

Your actions are currently being discussed at COM:AN; please go there and see the section entitled "Uploader trying to revoke irrevocable licenses". Nyttend (talk) 00:35, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you want free photos they must be small, ok ?

Regarding your deletion requests[edit]

First, if you wish to nominate your uploads for deletion, do not nominate them individually; this is highly disruptive. Instead, create a mass deletion request as described at Commons:Deletion requests/Mass deletion request. Second, make sure when you nominate an image for deletion that you are on the file description page (beginning with "File:"), not the deletion requests subpage (starting with "Commons:Deletion requests/"). Third, do not upload downscaled versions of your own images over the old versions; if you do this again, you will be blocked. Finally, please note that once you have uploaded an image that you own the copyright to to Wikimedia Commons, it can never be deleted or downscaled, because you have already released it under a non-revocable license. This has the force of law, and if you challenge us in court, we will win. I advise you to simply cut your losses and not upload any new works. Dcoetzee (talk) 11:09, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The issue of image size has been discussed above and elsewhere. Feel free to bring it up again in Commons forums if you wish. In the meantime, however, please stop unilaterally replacing free licensed images with smaller less useful versions until there is consensus. -- Infrogmation (talk) 14:10, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please see my comment at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Pisco.jpg. Also, there is no need to put notices for deletion requests of your photos on my page; not my photos. Thanks. Infrogmation (talk) 19:08, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
