Revision as of 18:08, 28 May 2008

This page is for requests to usurp accounts that already exist. If you want your account renamed to a name that is not already taken, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.

This page permits users to request, and bureaucrats to consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames. This consists of renaming an existing dormant account in order to permit another user to adopt the name.

If you wish to request usurpation, please read and follow the instructions below. The account you want to usurp should have no edits or log entries (except in the username creation log) to qualify for usurpation, although rare exceptions are made where old edits do not require attribution under the GFDL. Please do not request usurpation if your user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.

If you have already unified your login, it is impossible to rename an existing account to that name, because of bug #13507. Unification is still possible once the old account is moved out of the way, but to merge edits from another username with your global account you will need to request that a steward deletes your global account first.

Instructions
  • Log in to your present account.
  • Leave a message on the talk page of the target account (preferably of the form {{subst:usurpation requested}} ~~~~) notifying the user of your request.
Please do not e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a bureaucrat or clerk will do so.
  • Add your request to this page using the proper template. This may be done via a shortcut (1) or by the traditional method (2):
(1) The shortcut: Click this link. Replace "REQUESTED_NAME" with the username you wish to usurp, and "CURRENT_NAME" with your current username. You may include some reason for the change beneath the template if you wish. Leave the "Subject/headline" field blank.
(2) The traditional method: Click "edit this page"; find the section for today's date; copy the following text and paste it at the bottom of that section.
{{subst:usurp|REQUESTED_NAME|CURRENT_NAME}} ~~~~
Replace "REQUESTED_NAME" with the username you wish to usurp, and "CURRENT_NAME" with your current username. You may include some reason for the change beneath the template if you wish.
  • Check your spelling and click "Save page".
  • Your request is now complete and ready to be processed. If the owner of the target account does not object within seven days, a bureaucrat will fulfill your request provided other requirements are met. Mark the date, so you will not be surprised when you find yourself unable to log in to your old account.

Notes

  • When the rename has been completed, your account will have been renamed, and any contributions you have made (including deleted contributions) will be reattributed to your new account as a background process. Your account preferences, watchlist contents, password, etc. will all be preserved, and your user and user talk pages will have been moved to the new name.
Note: The process responsible for reallocating old contributions is currently dependent upon the job queue mechanism. As such, you may find old contributions do not immediately appear under your new account; this is perfectly normal. Updates should take at most a day to complete, although the length of time will vary according to the size of the job queue on this wiki, and the status of the server processes which process this queue.
  • The change will appear in the user rename log and the request will be moved to the archives in the interest of transparency. It is not possible to rename accounts without an entry being created in the log.
  • This change will not affect signatures you have already left on talk pages, or other places where you signed your username with ~~~~. Those pages will continue to display your signature (including the link to your old username) unless edited manually.
  • Be aware: Once you have been renamed, your old account will no longer exist and may potentially be recreated by a third party. This is true even if your old account pages have been redirected towards your new account. To guard against impersonation, you may wish to recreate the old account yourself.

A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully.

TGS ← BrianGilliford

TGS is my username everywhere I go and has been since probably 1994 I register it everywhere I use it everywhere I didn't register this username that I know of, if I did I did it and completely forgot about it. Since TGS was taken I registered TeeGeeEss which I use if I can't use TGS in places, but alas forgot my password completely. I do not really want to keep BrianGilliford as thats my real name but its the only other thing I would remember logging in. I checked into the username and as far as I could tell it hasn't been used at all so I would like it as it is my internet identity.

DannyKitty ← DanielBrodzik

I created both accounts, so I hope that merging them, or at least replacing that account with this one, will be possible. I don't want to use my real last name on Wikipedia anymore. DanielBrodzik (talk) 05:40, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The first step is to verify that the target is yours before this request can be considered. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 09:58, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Diti ← DitiTux

Diti is the username I use everywere, from my Mozilla LDAP account to other Wikimedia Foundation's projects. I plan to make an usurpation request to Wikipedia Spain as soon as this account is renamed (only one edit, my account on ES is DitiTux too). As you can see, this account has never be used since its creation the 15 October 2005. DitiTux (talk) 20:58, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Crom1 doesn't use is account since march 2007 and have only 2 minor edit, which is not really significant. I already use this name significantly on WP:FR and on Commons, and somewhat on WP:EN (plus minor edits on other projects, mainly for intewiki purpose).

Clerk note: All is in order except for the two edits noted above. They were from only a year back, and each are probably GDFL significant. Leaving it to bureaucrat discretion. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 02:37, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Piotr Konieczny

I would like to create a doppleganger account at User:Piotr Konieczny (my real name) to prevent possible future usurpation. I cannot create that account as I am getting 'account exists' error (it was registered half a year ago apparently), but this account has no edits (see Piotr Konieczny (talk · contribs). Could it be deleted, so I could register it? PS. Please note I don't want to change my current account name (Piotrus), but to create a doppleganger account. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 22:21, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, I dont want to rename RuM to Beren. It is not possible. RuM is an account used on too many wikis and in some cases Beren and RuM both exist on the same wiki. I only want to free space for my main account, Beren, by moving current account Beren to another name, for example to User:Beren-SUL or User:Beren-old. --RuM (talk) 11:14, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is actually a case of identity theft against a known user in the Portuguese-language projects. The account was created by a vandal, who used it for vandalism only and was quickly blocked. ariely ← Ariely ru

I request usurpation of this account, since that user didn't contribute any edit to English Wikipedia. I have the same name on ru.wikipedia.org, commons.wikimedia.org, he.wikipedia.org, meta.wikimedia.org, ru.wikiquote.org, ru.wikisource.org, ru.wiktionary.org. Thank you for your time. --Ariely ru (talk) 07:14, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Clerk note: IPs cannot usurp accounts unfortunately. You will need to create an account under a different name, and usurpations are usually only processed for users having around 500+ edits. Although, as this is for SUL, the 'crats may make an exception. RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 07:27, May 28, 2008 (UTC)
OK, now I have my own account, that I request to change. Thanx. --Ariely ru (talk) 07:58, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • The target username has made edits to Wikipedia. Due to licensing concerns, this may be a barrier to usurpation.
  • User also has deleted contributions. Rudget (Help?) 09:38, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Deleted contrib was one article that was deleted two minutes later under A1. However, creating an article is VERY significant. hbdragon88 (talk) 09:48, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, but just flagging attention to it anyway. Rudget (Help?) 09:50, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
