RE: Victory Road (2010) Vandalism

Hi Jeffhardyred. Did we fix it all? Is that Kurt Angle or John Cena in the picture? --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 09:30, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
My message copied from Jeffhardyred (talk · contribs) talk page, as referred to below

I have read the message you sent me about the picture in this article, you changed it from John Cena to Kurt Angle, but your message implied that I changed it, if your going to tell someone something like that, please make sure you know who got it wrong, I didn't do that. Please don't take this as an insult, I just wanted to let you know, as it might offend people and they might see it as a false accusation of Vandalism, although I know my edit was the last one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeffhardyred (talkcontribs) 10:08, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

AGF? I think you have me mixed up with a vandal, because I did not change the picture caption.
There was still a diff between the pre and post vandalism, so I was asking whether "Kurt Angle or John Cena" was the correct caption. I can't see any implication there. Please check my diffs and the pages edit history. Happy Editing! --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 11:37, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, 4chan? What did you do this time? ;)  Davtra  (talk) 01:17, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I deleted Grawp's edit summaries from his most recent spree of page-move vandalism and deleted some of the more charming moves from the log. I've had 4chan telling me to "stop buggering little boys" and "stop spreading AIDS" ever since! Lol! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:25, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If I may get a word in Davtra :P ? Thanks for the note HJ, I think I had a look at recent deaths and noticed Mackerras already. And it was late, just pre 6AM. Good idea on the 'alternate' talk page. Thought of something similar myself, though I probably saw it used by someone. Meant to reply much earlier but nodded off (I seem to have managed to reset my body clock away from 'Vampire time'! ( 'VTC'? ) --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 20:17, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, VTC, that's a new one! ;) Mackerras got on ITN, btw. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:25, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

section break

<yawn>I must have nodded off again, seem to have 'lost' some time as I was dropping a TB on your alt-talk when I saw your reply here. Perhaps UVT(Universal Vampire Time)? May be back online after a few hours zzz time ('UzT'?). Recent days have played a PC game for first time since got on W'pedia (10 Months!) so may do a bit more of that instead. Best to "Whisky Drinker" from "Port Drinker". nb. think "redheads" . --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 21:50, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Mmmm, redheads! ;) You don't need to drop me talkbacks- I stalk you obsessively! It's almost a shame you never get any vandals that I can revert! It always amuses me when I revert a vandal the instant they make their edit! This is a good example- nine seconds! He made exactly the same edit right before, which I reverted in 11 seconds! I definitely agree with you on UZT. I think I'm in that timezone right now! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:40, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

() Sorry HJ, I was 'elsewhere', didn't spot your 'post'. A guy on the other side of the planet who I have never met or seen says, quote: "I stalk you obsessively!" unquote. Hmm? Taken out of context that could be worrying! Though I have noted you pop up suddenly when I was in odd places on the Outer Rim of the Wikiverse.

  • Have to discuss your equipment(!). My 'Broadband' Unwired net interface (256 'KB' must be kilobits) is so slow I sometime need 6-10 seconds just to update a page! So my 'real-time' vandal whacking is somewhat limited. Often I am removing Unsourced/POV/Unintelligible stuff from Indian('subcontinent') related articles, via my Special:Log/newusers 'patrolling'. The 'vandals' I run into don't seem the vindictive sort, more misguided 'one off' or noob editors. Anyhow what sort of net connection do you have Giga Byte?
  • A series of seemingly co-ordinated edits at Harry Judd and Danny Jones got my attention though. Thought that might have repercussions. AFAIR HellYeahEdit‎ (talk · contribs) is what caught my eye. Vandals have no imagination! That sort of name to me just screams vandal, and I was right! And JessicaMCFLYx (talk · contribs)? (of Back to the Future) too. May be worthy of blocking as VOAs?
  • See Soxrox45 (talk · contribs) too, falsely claims roll-back rights. First (15 October 2008) and last (31 May 2010) edits were vandalism. Possible 'sleeper' account, or just a 'dill'! Ah yes, did this when Bronwyn Bancroft was on the MP. Definitely worth a ban just for that IMHO!

nb. Brunettes are nice too! --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 07:10, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wait, you're discussing the equipment of a guy on the other side of the planet who stalks you obsessively? I feel your pain with regard to slow internet though, this month all the schoolkids are out on winter break (no doubt watching hours of music videos and using facebook and google maps, from my experience working with tech in schools- they don't even play Runescape anymore!) so my internet's taken up to five minutes to load a static page, let alone something like my email or watchlist! You seem pretty good at spotting socks, maybe clerking at WP:SPI would be something that you'd be good at... if you had an account. (p.s. I stalk you obsessively too. There needs to be a "Stalkers of 220.101 Anonymous" (SO2A?) for rehabilitation :P) sonia♫♪ 07:23, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Stalking "obsessively" may be a good thing. It tells you that you are loved :)  Davtra  (talk) 07:38, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict × Aaargh!) Yes double entendres come fast around Wikipedia! I have (far?) less than 30 'watchers', but HJ has 154 ! My internet always seems 'slow' though at some times, like 5am it seems to speed up. Haven't noticed any 'school holiday' effect, yet. I also usually have several browser windows with several tabs open simultaneously, ie article/talkpage/edit history.
  • I use Unwired, what do you have? (I get 256 Kb/s(?) and 12 Gb per month! (up from 9 Gb when I got it in June 2009) for A$29.95 per month) Though I haven't used up more than 7.541 Gb. Less capacity, more speed would suit me!
  • Is there a code for section break other then the === section break === I just added? --220.101 (talk) \Contribs08:52, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have less than 30 watchers too, the orange new messages bar is quite a novelty for me (here, anyway- all the other wikipedias email me when I have a new message, and it gets old very quickly...) I use Ihug, they're more reliable and helpful than Telecom despite the lack of frills. I forgot how much we get, I'll check and get back to you. But I do know I had to double it this month because I hit the cap. (working at school= my holidays too, and I'm bored!) Our internet is usually a good deal faster though, living in central Auckland and all, the fastest it gets is 48Mbps. Do you live in a central urban area? ( And yep, the section break looks fine. "Ms. Sonia"? I like it! ) sonia♫♪ 09:21, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict × 2x Argh!) Sure it's "48Mbps"?. Mine is 256Kbps (AFAIK) ≈200x slower! You know I started my last reply soon after I got it, then EC with Davtra, but it still took me ages (+60 mins??!) Obviously you 'kids' do lots of typing at school? I need to be far less picky/fiddly and not preview (s-l-o-w-l-y) so often, methinks!
Whois currently has me in Coffs Harbour!, actually in Sydneys suburbs, which may help my speed as Unwired is literally a wireless connection. Thought of faster 'plan' but costs much more and heard it doesn't go as fast as it should. Still cheaper/faster than what I paid for a 56k AOL dial up plan in about 2000-01 ≈A$50 I think.
I thought there might be a {{section break}} code? No? --220.101 (talk) \Contribs10:31, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I went off and checked my package (and held off commenting until you finished :P), and it's unlimited speed but only 5GB. Which is enough for me, and it's fast enough (because of the way "unlimited" works, it can be ridiculously fast or veery slow when lots of people are utilising it). As for preview- I do it too, but I use a dinky javascript in my vector.js that allows me to preview without reloading the page! Pretty handy for OCD like mine (reason #5,642 why you should get an account). But yes, I do a lot of typing on a daily basis, so I type at about 60-70wpm. Dialup? Had that until two years ago. Don't know how I survived. (Well, two years ago I hadn't discovered Wikipedia, so...) "kid"? How old would you guess I am?sonia♫♪ 10:47, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have many stalkers as well. That's why there's tumbleweed on my talk page. I use Internode as my ISP. I get 50GB (max speed 700 Kb/s) for A$50 per month. It's nice. I wish the price was lower.  Davtra  (talk) 09:33, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Do you use all that 50GB? if so 3x speed + 3x limit of mine for < 3x price seems good value.--220.101 (talk) \Contribs10:31, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It certainly is good value. I think it's one of the best plans in Australia. In regards to your question, no, I don't use it all, and that got me thinking... I paid for 50 GB, so I should use it all. I've started to download movie files and do whatever it takes to use 50 GB in a month. It's proving to be a challenge for me.  Davtra  (talk) 01:15, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I've got all three of you watchlisted, so there! Sonia, didn't realise you were Auckland as well (not that I am, but I was... I moved from the Shore to the Shaws). TFOWR 09:45, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Heh...not that my page is very interesting to watchlist. Jafas unite! (Well, I migrated as a kid, but it's nice to count ) The Shore? Well, now apparently we're all one big happy familycity... Davtra: Here's a much more awesome tumbleweed pic for you to use: this one. Y'know, I'm curious as to how y'all are like in real life, cause you're all probably not the kind of people I'd meet in the course of a regular day - that's the great thing about it, though. sonia♫♪ 10:07, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
TFOWR, Must be a story there, moving from NZ to 'Scootland'? Not OZ? --220.101 (talk) \Contribs10:31, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not really! Born in NZ, moved to the UK as a teenager (first England, then Scotland), returned home for several years to catch up with relatives, then returned to Scotland. Thanks to the Internet (heh! I'm on topic for this thread!) I can work pretty much anywhere. I'd imagine I'll return to NZ at some point, and - you'll be pleased to know - I'm giving serious thought to Oz as well (relatives there, too, and Julia Gillard is better than John Key from a having-to-see-a-politician's-mug-on-TV-everynight-perspective...) TFOWR 10:42, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, EU citizen then perhaps? Globe-trotting parents are an advantage I suppose. My father's family once lived at Parkes (radio telescope? 'The Dish' movie?). Us Aussies supposedly get treated as 'aliens' when we visit the 'mother country'! And what Kiwi doesn't have family in Oz? --220.101 (talk) \Contribs10:59, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No EU citizenship :-( I did qualify for UK citizenship (and all the EU-loveliness that that would bring) but that was before my most recent stint back home. I don't seem to have any problems travelling in Europe, and my UK visa lets me live and work in the UK (but not in the rest of the EU), so I've not been too bothered. And I can live/work/vote in Oz, as you'll probably know. TFOWR 11:09, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No! Come back here! Wikimedia NZ needs some more people to get started properly, but the Aussie one is doing fine :P And apparently I was wrong! I have 33 watchers! 220.101, this page is getting really long to load (longer than ANI, which is saying something!) Might be time to archive for your bandwidth's sake? sonia♫♪ 11:03, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, alright! TFOWR 11:09, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sonia, just noticed yout 10:47 post re your 'net plan. 5Gb would not be enough for me, though I could probably make do. What are you charged? is what really matters. Doubling your cap must have cost! 60-70 wpm!! I'm ~ 6-7wpm, if that. (Thanks for holding back. I was getting really p$%%&d off at the constant edit conflicts, moreso at having to copy and paste my multiple answers over and over!) My monitor now has a flickering band on it from my 'anger management technique', I shall call it. I may stay off Wiki tonight and play a few shoot/blow em' up games to de-stress!

  • Re Archiving, don't I need to create an archive page to do so? ps. wp:SPI is the page that I find 'impossible' loading and scrolling.

Otherwise it's probably goodnight from me and anything else I'll answer tomorrow!--220.101 (talk) \Contribs 11:54, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving

Re re Archiving - you would, but that may be possible? I don't know. Until recently I assumed that IPs couldn't have userpages, but I was wrong about that! And I'll resist the obvious comment... TFOWR 12:13, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know IPs could have userpages actually until 220 proved me wrong! I think they can create talk pages in any "[X] talk" namespace, so 220 should be able to create User talk:220.101.28.25/Archive 1. Or I could use my magical admin powers to move the whole damn lot there and leave you with a non-existent talk page to start from scratch. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:38, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A nice editor who likes to play with big machines created my Userpage for me. I was as surprised as anyone! And I have just created "User talk:220.101.28.25/Archive 1" ! Why didn't I try that before? HJ, I left a message at your alt Talk page! ≈5-1/2 hours ago! --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 02:11, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've archived you. I just lopped off everything older than about a week. All 213,705 characters of it! That's probably the biggest removal of content that wasn't vandalism all day! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:35, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
WTF! Hm Ok! We still need to talk about equipment. Probably your 'tomorrow' my late night! --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 02:50, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Equipment? Meh, it's late. Brain. No. Work! Do you like your nice, much shorter, archived talk page? It should load quicker now, as well and it's much easier to navigate! Anyway, until tomorrow. Er, later. Er, the day after that. Whatever! We can pick this up in about 16 hours (I'm out all afternoon). HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:56, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Best ending I could have ever wished for the Toy Story saga. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did (went to the premiere as part of a company thing- kind of unusual, but nice) sonia♫♪ 03:09, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nota bene* (edit conflict) <Growl!> Okay HJ, sorry bout tardy reply, was adjusting my talkpage clocks, now 9 hours diff! Your 3.01 AM my 12.01 PM (same day? I think? ) Haven't seen that yet. What about Predators? that was ok. Have fun, not too much Junk food! --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 03:18, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Loving the new, streamlined talkpage! I'm wondering whether an archiving bot would work here? I'd normally recommend MiszaBot (since I had no luck with archiving until I discovered the joys of MiszaBot...) but apparently MiszaBot is no longer being maintained, so I suspect my own luvverley archiving is going to break sooner or later. I'd suggest ClueBot III: I had no luck with ClueBot, but my very lazy, very selfish view is: if you can get ClueBot to work, then I can get you to make ClueBot archive my talkpage ;-) TFOWR 08:41, 19 July 2010 (UTC) [reply]

You're up online early. That's a new outdent syntax I haven't seen too! {{outdent|#}} (#=no of indents) works the same. Where are all these codes available? (I keep asking!), or is it pretty 'standard' betweeen wikis? Don't know about bot archiving, & HJ did it without telling me, just after I created the subpages. They are all sub "User talk:username/page" but, not sub "username/page" as is usual. Can the bots archive to any page? (And while we compare magick spelles the trolls and vandals play!) I've been trying to play whack-a-vandal for six hours and haven't got there yet! Slow typist at work! --220.101 (talk) \Contribs09:14, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Real-life commitments - late to bed, early to rise! Good for Wikipedia, good for my coffee supplier, not so good for me ;-) I don't know if there's a complete list anywhere, and the {{outdent|::::}} syntax is fairly new for me, too (I've known about outdent for ages, but never realised you could actually specify the outdentiness of it). How I normally work it out is by following links - when I see {{outdent}} I click on it to see what fancy tricks it can do (the doco normally being quite good - I can read template code, just about, but I read English far better!) I prefer {{outdent|::::}} to {{outdent|4}} because it means I can just copy and paste the string of colons from the previous poster's comment ;-) I'm big on laziness! I'm trying to talk to you and Sonia at the 'same' time y'know. >;-( And I can't type acccurately & fast. Time permitting, take a look at the ace.wiki link she put below. Might be big trouble brewing! Ms Sonia

Guess what happened when you commented to HJ on my talk. Hm? Guess? Yes, the dreaded (edit conflict) (again!) Fortunately I'm not(?) in a grumpy mood so I didn't whack my monitor. (again!) I think I will have to Decree some Talkpage Rules! Don't know if you read my reply to one of your posts here (or see above "Archiving"). --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 05:39, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Heh. Yes, I did read the post above (and this one- just replying to an email, then I was going to reply here)- it's part of being a stalker, ain't it? I can't be a very good stalker if I don't at least stalk your talk page. I'm sorry about the (edit conflict), and I'm sure your monitor is too. :P (Is it an LCD?) Why, your Glorious and Immutable Majesty, feel free to set whatever rules you wish. May I have the honour of licking your shoes? sonia♫♪ 05:51, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No your Librarianship, but you may Kiss My --. My (yes LCD) monitor, which fortunately cost me nix, still looks ill and I don't think it will get better . Can't afford a new one either! d!&^*t"! I just need the time to reply w/o (edit conflict)! (See how long I've taken!)
  • Try this: {{=)|tongue}} ≡ , but you can't change the size as with this: [[File:Face-tongue.svg|20px]].
  • You must have liked Rachel Weisz's line from The Mummy "I am....a Librarian!" .

I get those emoticons using a script that adds them to the editing toolbar. (Scripts are plentiful and awesome! You need to get an account, to use them all!) I do usually use {{User talk:220.101.28.25}} though. How'd you get an LCD for nothing? I've got a few old computer parts lying around that I got for free, but nothing that can handle more than Win98. I've never seen that movie. Would you recommend it...? (By the way- I have a ridiculous number of edits to your talk page. Get an account, so I can email you and avoid getting warned for myspacing... :P ) sonia♫♪ 06:47, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Literally found the LCD on the side of the road! What I call "Junk Swapping Day/s", formally known as "Council Cleanup", when you put out unwanted furniture, electrical goods, clothes etc for collection. My computer desk came the same! I'm using a 1 Gb memory SIMM and DVD drive that were also thrown out. I have heaps of PC motherboards, cards, software inc. Windows '98/Office and games etc! Amazing what people throw out! (And they often don't wipe their hard drives either!) If I need something, I often find what I'm after for free!

  • Speaking of reading 1984, about 2 months ago I found a brand new, in box c/w accessories, Sony PRS-500 electronic book reader! 1984 was one of several E-books included with it!
  • Highly recommend The Mummy (Brendan Fraser version), (sorry I've 'spoiled' that line!)
  • Think a warning is likely/possible? Though I take your point, I think 'productive' editors like us would have to push it pretty far to upset people. I saw some 'newbie' accounts banned, but they were writing in non-English and using it like a mailbox/chatroom, can't really see why anyone would bother after all Hotmail/ G-mail etc. is free! Why I need to avoid gasbagging is, I take so b!@@dy long to get my reply out! ie. One hour! The Trolls and Vandals are aboot!

Wow! I got my desk and chair from the local school's offcasts, and they're made of good native wood, which is fantastic. Needed a good sanding and repaint, but that was all. But it seems otherwise that people around your area are more generous (or throw things away more easily) than us Aucklanders! Not wiping hard drives, pretty common. It's highly interesting, stuff you can get from other people's drives (though with pen drives you have to be more careful for viruses!) Re myspacing: I'm productive? Since when? Well, I've seen users with far more content work than I get cautioned for oversocialising. And besides, I want your email. Hmm, I've taken a while on this reply too, haven't I? (I tend to multitask, though...) What do you think of this? sonia♫♪ 08:48, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OMG! ace.wiki seems to be a 'regional' ie. Aceh Wikipedia is that right? 'Fark!' Sounds like on-line Jihad to me! (Caught me unawares there, I was answering TFOWR in thread above.) Yeh, people throw out old good wood, and buy chipboard crap! Saw a nice wood expandable dining table put out a few months ago, hope it found a new home. If chipboard furniture gets rained on, it basically falls apart! Shameful. Lots of flats around here, and probably fairly affluent, in parts! Haven't found a thumb drive, yet. (Wireless USB adapter, yes!) Just about anything else too! Books, heaters, 2 working TVs!-- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs09:45, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So apparently the four most active users communicate by phone, off-wiki, since it is in a way a "regional" Wikipedia. I fail to understand how they can think that using sysop status on Wikipedia to boycott Wikipedia makes any sense at all; however, I feel a bit of regret that it had to turn out with all active sysops desysoped. It kind of gives the impression that us English-speaking "Westerners" are going to tread all over their Wikipedia's culture without a further thought- but what else could we have done? (I have that scavenger instinct. Picked some jewellery off the ground a couple of weeks back- it was gold, I later found out. I love garage sales and school fundraisers- you get amazing clothes and books and appliances there. Heaters- I've got two oil fin heaters I picked up for $5 at one of those! Not as good as your free stuff, though!) sonia♫♪ 09:57, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for delay, was reading the 'frank exchange of views' . If you know, is this being discussed anwyhere on en.Wiki? How long has ace.Wiki existed? Was trying to find out how many edits or how active the main involved party is? I get the impression they are actually new to the project. (I have found the odd bit of jewelry, a silver ring once I think. Wonder where that is now?) I very rarely go to garage sales. Yep, nothing like something for nothing! Found a Commemorative A$10 bill thrown out, still have it! But the Ebook reader was a class find! What gets me is people put good furniture, clothes, kitchenware, electricals out within sight of a charity shop!, and can't be bothered to give it to them! (gee you're busy "All your base are belong to us‎" etc!) -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs10:45, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The ace.Wiki thing is a real worry! Perhaps it should be shut down? The news media will have a field day when they see the 'ranting' going on! (Omg 30 mins+) -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs 02:37, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's back to work for me, so I've been on very sporadically- one or two edits and then off again. :( The next few months have quite a few deadlines and papers due, so I actually need a good kicking if I'm on-wiki :P ) ace.wiki: I really don't know what I think. Behaviour was unacceptable, but shutting it down would be the trigger for a real chilling effect towards all the other Muslim-area-language Wikipedias and to a certain extent the other small wikipedias. And we really don't want that. sonia♫♪ 03:10, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Paging HJ Mitchell

Hi HJ! Seems you aren't checking your alt talk page! Though with the time diffs I am sure I have just missed you a few times too! This "pick this up in about 16 hours" has turned into a week! >;-( Though I haven't been editing much! Only about 40 edits in a week! Any 'stalker' can ping HJ if they wish! -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs 02:05, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I saw my name on my watchlist. I was busy dealing with vandalistic nutters on my alt talk page last night. I wish they'd get bored and/or just fuck off, but it's not so bad now I don't have to put up with the orange bar every time they decide to vandalise me! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:24, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Understood, I was just having a look at what Xoim washad been up to. You don't get a 'bar' when your alt talk gets a post? How was the movie (Toy Story)? --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 02:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
He's indef'd now and his userpage (which was... interesting) deleted. No, but it shows up on my watchlist. Or rather the most recent edit shows up, so if 4chan strike, I might miss earlier posts. The lack-of-orange-bar-ness was part of the reason I created the alt talk page so I can use it for long, off-topic conversations an so that the vandals aren't as irritating. The film was good- I liked it and a happy ending as only Disney can deliver! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:48, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting? Do tell ! "Spamspotter of Glory"? Due to see a movie tomorro, Inception (2010 film) looks interesting! --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 03:01, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sonia Section

Ooo... that's supposed to be good. Let me know when you've seen it :) sonia♫♪ 04:11, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Afternoon Miss Sonia. For you, I suspect any movie with Leonardo is good enough! ;-) The new Karate Kid is on too, though. And Shrek Forever After & Toy Story 3, which I have yet to see. Looks like HJ is finally taking 'UzT'(Universal Zzz Time) --220.101 (talk) \Contribs04:49, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have my own section- how special! I've seen both Shrek Forever After (incredibly weird, they took the plot far too far to make it extraordinary and ended up with a really predictable basic storyline anyway) and Toy Story 3 (absolutely brilliant. See it. ), but I'm not really interested in watching Karate Kid. (Not that I was particularly into either Shrek or Toy Story, but my li'l siblings wanted their big sis to hang out with them over the holidays. And I ended up enjoying the latter more than either of them, I reckon, given that I actually existed before the first Toy Story was made!) As for DiCaprio: meh. He doesn't really appeal to me at all, actually. (Come to think of it, I couldn't name an actor that does- I don't watch enough television/movies. Bet you could name a hundred pretty lasses, though :P) sonia♫♪ 05:03, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Too 'pretty'? Kate Winslet beats DiCaprio for me. Keira Knightley(love her eyebrows!), Claudia Black, Hilary Swank, Rhona Mitra, Rena Sofer, Alicia Witt, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ming Na, Zhang Ziyi, Joan Chen etc, probably could name a hundred! --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 06:02, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, you have good taste. (Apart from perhaps Knightley- her lack of, well, curves scares me.) So you like Asians as well as redheads, then? Interesting... thing is, so many of them think they are ugly because they look different from "normal", but it's what makes them pretty in their own way. That said, I'm not into Asians myself- though I think red hair is absolutely beautiful. sonia♫♪ 06:20, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Keira has no (very noticeable) boobs, but she can act, apparently! Certainly she is ultra 'slim', also has a nice smile. 'Proves' you don't have to be 'busty' to be successful! Blond, brunette, redheads, Viva la Difference! But redheads have a special place in my heart. REAL Red is nice, but on a naturally dark haired ie. Asian, person usually doesn't work well! Inception is a very long movie, 2hr 28m!. Likely I'll see it tomorrow, unless I try Toy Story 3. Will drop a note about it if I do. --220.101 (talk) \Contribs07:07, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A (part-Asian) girl I know was complaining about her school's hair colour policy; it allows for dyes as long as they're "natural colors". She'd dyed her hair a dark pink and was insisting it was red, and thus natural. *headdesk* As for Keira (lovely name)... I'm kinda unusual in that I think women look, well, more like women with fuller figures; it's somewhat ironic as I'm a tiny four foot ten! (Means I'm the envy of all my "must-lose-weight" friends, but I think they look fine...) She has a pretty face, that said. Well, let me know if you see either movie- I'm keen to know what you think. Off-topic, here's another link to meta for you. Quite interesting. sonia♫♪ 08:58, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good frigging lord. As if sysops here don't have enough to worry about, you want me to have to decide if it is suitable for a separate project when I delete something? Talk about straight from the WP:Bad Idea Machine! As to hair colour, I like all of them, but think there's nothing tackier than an obvious dye job... Courcelles (talk) 09:27, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)"four foot ten" tiny! Seem to recall Asian(Japanese?) people ending up sort of orange rather than red (but pink!). I have noticed (being a guy) that Ladies naturally run the whole gamut from Keira Knightley-slim to Jennifer Love Hewitt-curvy. Or maybe Keira just runs a lot? Reminds me a little of Tatiana Grigorieva (Wot no piccy!) But, if they are "as thick as two planks", it doesn't count for much!
(Interesting link!) Language Courcelles! -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs09:36, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Four-10. Sonia, you'd not even come up to my shoulders. That's absolutely tiny. I've noticed the "orange" thing, mainly in Japan and the ROC. Of course my neighbour that is 45 years old and white as chalk has managed to die her hair orange, so it's not an exclusively asian thing, either. (Oh, language. I actually self-censored what I really thought of that proposal!) Courcelles (talk) 10:00, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Yeah, I get the "woah, you're tiny!" thing a lot. It's genetic- my mother is 4'6" :P Man, this has to be the page I've had the most random conversations on. (I had to look up "as thick as two planks", btw– which probably means I fall under that category.)
@Courcelles: I was more thinking about the technical difficulties involved (and the massive BLP concerns) but of course there is a heck of a lot of extra work for you sysops as well. It's also at the idea lab here on enwiki if either of you wants to pitch in. sonia♫♪ 10:08, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'd be totally of my rocker if that were true! You obviously (according to your graphs) get regular sleep soon after 21-24:00 UTC. Then again, all it really means is you are not editing, maybe off biting virgins necks instead? I do need to get more regular sleep though. Will need to go 'beddy byes' soon, though not feeling tired at the moment, out of grog too! -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs17:12, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

But, I don't have any Grog! (Maybe some wine?) I'm just as likely to nod off in front of the computer and never actually get to bed! (Not coffee, perhaps the Cola?) "Error 503: server does not have 220.101's stamina" Damn right! See ya!-- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs17:48, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
...and it's past midnight, the grog shop will be closed. Oops, sorry! For some reason my time-zone maths went to pot. I'll let you get to sleep, but when you return I need to know about 24-hour supermarkets and the availability of liquor therein! My local Woolworths in NZ was 24 hours, which made late-night wine runs a possibility. No such luck in Scotland... it's only in the last decade or so that we've been allowed to buy grog on a Sunday... TFOWR 17:58, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about delay in answering, I was off poking around Commons. I saw Inception (film). Not overly impressed by it. As you are not into 'Leonardo' I'd skip it. Wait for it to come out on DVD --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 12:23, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not that much of a delay ... ;). Something amazing happened, my talk page is on fire.  Davtra  (talk) 11:48, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay then, I trust your judgement. (unrelated: here's another interwiki link: I was astounded by the level of incivility by what was obviously an experienced editor. here. Not a good way to get my foot into the door of another project, though.) sonia♫♪ 11:52, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, that happens. I just saw two experienced editors blocked on Wikipedia recently (one with over 10,000 and 30,000 edits). I was surprised to see that they got themselves blocked for edit warring. Crazy things can happen anywhere...  Davtra  (talk) 12:00, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, yes. But sometimes I go and read things at random projects then I come back wondering how enwiki is dysfunctional. For such a big community, y'know what? We get by pretty well. Often part of the problem is that if one user is disruptive on a small project, it's basically a trainwreck because everyone is inevitably involved. sonia♫♪ 12:08, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict × x2!!)• Amazing! @ ≈11:51 I was posting here and went to Sonias' contribs (heading for your talk to leave a talkback), when I got the message bar! Can I borrow your welcome template {{subst:W-FAQ}}? (WT$ Davtra? Fire? ) --220.101 (talk) \Contribs12:11, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

@ Sonia, yes that link was quite an eyeful! -- 220.101 (talk) 12:36, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Uh, well, yeah. But surely that's enough time (and actually, common sense would tell you) to know not to go off into a rant like that on a reader. WN is one of the sites where the public can interact with the community without de facto becoming part of it, and it's immensely important that the readers get the right idea. I saw the thing with HJ, wanted to comment but got 8 edit conflicts in a row and gave up...! (And apparently Jimbo disagrees with Delicious carbuncle's holiday! More drama!) Sure, feel free to borrow {{W-FAQ}}- I think it needs more use :) The only fire that got to my talk was a minor piece of socking by ole "I dropped the soap", which wasn't a big deal at all- Davtra, you've had an interesting little block of time with that orange bar haven't you? It's weird how when I started off that bar filled me with anticipation; now it's a mixture between nonchalance and dread, especially when it's "sigh, this needs to be revdeled now." or worse, if it could be a block notice! sonia♫♪ 19:22, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And Turtlestack's now apologised on their talk, which makes me feel bad for going into a rant like that on my third ever edit :P sonia♫♪ 19:40, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sonia. (You're up late/early!) It is good that Turtlestack apologised. We don't know what was happening with them so I assume a temporary loss of civility. As it seemed out of character for them perhaps something bad is occurring maybe? One WP editor I know of, their mother died in the last few days. Things like that can be happening and we never hear. I know there have been times when a fairly innocuous comment has lit my fuse!
I see Fetchcomms (talk · contribs) has weighed in at Wikinews too! Who's "I dropped the soap"? -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs 03:08, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sonia, you'll come to realise that WN is a bit dysfuntional. Most (not all, but most) of its editors are washed-up local rag journalists or Wikipedians who are either bored or know it's the only English-speaking project they'll ever get admin rights on. It's falling apart at the minute with a lot of very well respected editors (there are only a few dozen active editors anyway) leaving and others who are mentally unstable and driving away contributors. Not to mention that people would rather edit war with someone trying to make the style guide look less like it was written by a 12 year old instead of writing articles that Wikipedia has already written and got onto the Main Page! The project has become more important than its goals (a bit like Commons, really). Anyway, rant over! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:49, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
220.101: No, just online early. I've had a grand total of 18 hours of sleep in the last week, I think. Yes, compassion is always needed- it's a bit hard because we're all just faceless, voiceless lines of text. I tend to AGF too much, though, according to some... "I dropped the soap" is the username theme of a silly ring of wannabe socks. Meh. (Fetchcomms is a regular editor at WN  completely different kettle of fish.)
@HJ: Wow, big piece of invective- and reading through the RfDA I can understand why. I really do feel sorry for the project as a whole, but I can't say (as a bystander, no doubt I don't know the full story) that I agree completely with either your sentiment or your actions there.
It's a common issue to many small projects, in that they need all the editors they can get and are torn between retaining all the current ones (which might drive away new users) or giving them the boot and going hungry for a while. Sometimes it's really hard. The other thing, of course, is that these little projects (especially the English-language ones!) are always going to have a bit of identity crisis, a niggling "why do we exist?- enwiki is so much bigger, so much more successful, covers so much of our material in its own way. What's the point?" And as long as they continue to be compared in that way, things aren't going to get much better; there's a completely different dynamic to each project and the dynamic on smaller projects changes far more quickly as people come and go because any one person can influence the mood of the project so very much.
Newcomers who are policy-wonkers are also not a good thing. What makes the smaller projects work at first (as enwiki used to) is that anarchy, that IAR spirit and if we spend too much time not_building_the_project but arguing over wording of policies (better still, wheel-warring!), then we've missed the point. The main stumbling block is that "enwiki does this, so should we" in these cases... which I guess is what you said above, the project getting more important than its goals.
I suppose we are all here not just to build an encyclopedia/dictionary/news site but we must have some personal interest of our own. I started with the excitement that a nobody like me could contribute my tuppence to the world's biggest encyclopedia, a desire for a five minutes of fame if you like; now it's morphed into a passion for the people, for the awesome community that makes this place happen. People absolutely fascinate me. There's my motivation- and if the motivations of the individuals of a small project are "it'll be easy to get adminship here", then we're screwed because these are the kind who, honestly, should not be let anywhere near the bit. I'm sure mine are not the most noble of motives, but I'm sincere about them and they are something I can say on-wiki. When the contributors are all vested and nobody's cards are on the table, it's a very dicey game we've got into.
Good grief, sorry about that 220.101! I can't even tell if I'm agreeing, disagreeing, or neither! I'd better end there... sonia♫♪ 05:43, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Bugger me, that's quite a rant! A project is in serious trouble when "news" articles have to wait so long to be published that they cease to be news, despite there being multiple reviewers and admins online. Then I publish an article that's slightly below some arbitrary standard and I'm hanged for it! It amuses me that, on here, we managed to get an article written, nominated and onto ITN before anyone had even thought about it on WN- and people wonder why Wikipedia is usually in the top 5 Google News results for ongoing events when WN is nowhere to be seen! At least on Commons being a respected editor on another wMF project counts for something, but on WN, there seems to be a collective dislike of Wikipedians! What's simple like? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:30, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No thanks, not my type I'm sure! Was it the "Wyclef Jean considering standing for president of Haiti" article? Who's talk page(mail box?) is this BTW? -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs 14:53, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
220.101...huh? Really sorry about offloading all that onto your talk page, by the way. HJ: Yes, I noticed that while tagging a couple of articles for speedy deletion (I have a copyvio radar, but those were really blatant) and it took quite a long while to get them deleted. Today I copyedited an article with appalling typos, and it took over half an hour to get reviewed... I think the thing is that while WN is a time-sensitive project by nature, we're much more aware of time constraints here- ironic as that is. Simple? It's great, but somewhat depressing at times. Thing is, we get an influx of cross-project sockers and permabanned enwikipedians, but less users come from here of the constructive kind. And of course there's always the anonymous commenters "Simple English sucks. Go to the real Wikipedia, it's much better.", which obviously is a bit of a slap to the face for us. But because we need all the contributors we can get (and because things are often like a small-scale version of enwiki), we welcome everyone with open arms. Honestly, we're so short of users (well, users who write) that DYK is seldom updated on time, even though any article that's not a VGA (FA) can be nominated. The community is a bit conflicted, because one troublesome user (or better still, multiple admins/crats duking it out) can -and do, on a regular basis- cause a right trainwreck. However, as a whole I think we're one of the more stable and productive of the small wikis, despite the terrible reputation Simple English has in the Wikimedia community in general. It's not a "real language", sure, but I think it is a very useful complement to this Wikipedia especially for complex mathematical concepts. The only issue is that in the interlanguage bar down the side, it's listed all the way down under "s" as "Simple English". If I were looking for it, I would probably never find it– and that can't be good news. (220.101, guess how long I took on this reply... three hours.) sonia♫♪ 02:59, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I'll have a stroll over to simple then. Half an hour is pretty good. How would you feel if yo wrote an article and had to wait 50 hours for it to be published? That's not an exaggeration and the frustration is only added to when you see all the reviewers and admins online rolling back a newbie who tried to copy edit the style guide! Like I say, the project has become more important than it's goals. It reminds me of commons, but at least when I need a Commons admin, I can post on their admin board and I get some respect for being an enwiki admin, whereas on WN it feels like a badge of shame! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:13, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Whoa, 50 hours?? The good thing about simple is that there are, literally, no backlogs. But if you see the four links above, a copious amount of drama tends to breach the surface of what is quite a pleasant project. Which is a shame. (And 220.101's gonna come back to an additional 10Kb of text on his talk page.... ) sonia♫♪ 04:10, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, Simple English is ... relaxing and peaceful, yet there are so many red-links that will drive you crazy. Aghh!  Davtra  (talk) 04:25, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I think those red-links are motivating me to create articles on Simple English Wikipedia.  Davtra  (talk) 04:40, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another break

HJ up too late again! @ Sonia, 3 hours from when you started it to finishing it you mean? At least I have had no edit conflcts <crosses fingers> (@ Davtra, theres an idea! If you are over at 'simple.Wiki' you won't be making edits conflicts when I try to answer here! ) -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs 05:42, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think I spent the best part of 3 hours actually thinking about it; I started the reply in the morning when I saw your post, but had to leave round lunchtime to go play the piano somewhere (wouldn't really call it performing- most of what I do is just background music.). I left the computer idling when I locked up, and came back to it when I got back- took me forever. sonia♫♪ 05:52, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I once started a comment and got sidetracked on WP, actually posted it about 12+ hours later! Fortunately it was not time sensitive. (But my typing speed is also slow!)
* I have a 'keyboard' that I bought years ago (Yamaha DSR-500 'Portatone') and I still haven't learned to play it! "background music" eh, a paid 'gig'? -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs 06:26, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A Yamaha keyboard? I have an Electone. (Man, that article needs cleanup.) It's great fun to mess around with synthesising effects and such-like, but nothing beats the sound and feel of a real piano! (I own an antique upright which I got for under market value, it's a beautiful mahogany with ivory keys. My most expensive possession by far. During the week I'm one of the lucky few to have access to a Steinway grand, which is also awesome.) Paid? Somewhat, a step above busking I supose. Just a thing I do when I need cash because all I have to do is show up and play the same canned repertoire for an hour or two- hardly work, and I usually get fed! Easy, fits into my schedule, and it sounds more impressive (and is much cushier) than working at Macdonald's. Right now I'm trying (hastily) to make enough money to buy myself a decent sleeping bag. I'm joining a couple of girlfriends next weekend in surveying the local ranges, and as it's still winter and we'll be sleeping in a tent I somehow doubt my raggedy old one will do much good! sonia♫♪ 06:51, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looked up Yamaha YZR500, not a keyboard! (Vrooom!) My musical training is sadly lacking! It appears WP has good coverage of musical instruments, on a quick look. H'm no mention in Electone of the DSR! May have been a one off, but it has a full keyboard plus many 'instruments'! Have too look into learning, I want to play Toccata in D Minor!
• I was having a peek at the sim:WP links you gave when you posted. The Kennedy events are unfortunate.
• I have a spare sleeping bag and some time back I gave one to charity! Too bad you're 'over there'! Kathmandu had it's regular sales on in OZ recently, may still be on? Still not cheap, but quality. (Don't think I have ever bought anything at Kathmandu for full price!) Perhaps you can borrow one? Too long, too many links=45 minutes!! Aargh! -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs07:40, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
[reply]

Toccata in D minor? Hmm, not my first choice, but it's not bad. I'm more of a Chopin and Beethoven girl, but I also enjoy jazz. (Before I started learning the piano or cello, I played the recorder at school too... I was a relatively late bloomer as I only started piano 3 years ago, and cello last year. Which is why I'm not great.)
The Kennedy saga is a bit of a dilemma, really. We're still debating whether to unblock him- half the community remembers him fondly and wants him back, the other half has felt absolutely betrayed and never wants to see him again. And then there's the newbies like me who don't remember his desysopping and thus have no clue. What do you think?
Oh, I wish I could borrow your sleeping bag! :( I should be able to find someone who will lend me one, but I don't like having to be responsible for other people's stuff, because I'm very open-handed and disorganised with my own possessions. And with my life in general, I guess. It works well for me most of the time until I actually need to find something. sonia♫♪ 08:22, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
'Toccata' was used in the movie Rollerball, but I like other classical music, old and new. John Williams, Basil Poledouris, esp his Conan soundtreack! Yes it will be a bit chilly there! Try second hand stores and, as it is towards winters' end so sales? Or Kathmandu, if they are on special, too pricey otherwise! -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs09:21, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What is it with you and these edit conflicts? If only you typed a bit faster  Davtra  (talk) 08:21, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Usually it's you Davtra! If I had tried to reply to Sonia immediately ≈100% chance of edit conflict! As it was, it was about ½ hour before I 'refreshed' and got the ' Orange Bar of Doom 'p (I'm cooking, & watching "24 Hours After: Asteroid Impact" on TV) -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs09:21, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Really? Are you serious? Hmm. Why do people call the "new message" or "alert" bar the "orange bar"? I remember having a discussion on HJ Mitchell's talk page and he said, "I'm really busy ... I don't want to see the orange bar". I didn't understand what this "orange bar" was (yea, I can be slow), and I thought he was referring to my signature! Funny.  Davtra  (talk) 10:03, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Because it's so... orange. I honestly used to jump every time I saw it, and it still startles me. Those userboxes people have that look like new messages bar annoy me for that reason- they take me a couple of seconds to process. New messages- sometimes I dread them, sometimes I look forward to them, but the novelty's worn off I guess. When I know it's a vandal trolling, then it's a pain to get multiple new messages bars for each time someone vandalises and each time it gets rolled back! When it's an admin, then maybe I'm in trouble! If it's a newbie, maybe I've confused them hopelessly... who knows? :P sonia♫♪ 10:09, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes, it's very orange. I should feel delighted when I see that orange bar (because orange is my favourite color). But I get that feeling too. I usually ask myself, "Am I in trouble? What did I do now?" How does 220 feel when 220 gets the new message bar often?  Davtra  (talk) 10:17, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe a new colour is in order? Take a look at the colour examples at the top of my talk page.(And I would have EC with Sonia this time, if I hadn't had a look at the top of my talk before I saved! -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs10:16, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Damn straight! Hellfire and Brimstone time, well, after the second EC in a row maybe! And that bar can be annoying! Perhaps they need to get it to tell you who is editing your page? (Maybe drop the box from your sig?) -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs10:28, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In theory, I could probably change the colour of the orange bar- I expect it's controlled by a mediawiki page, but in practice, I'd be reverted pretty quickly if I turned it blue or something! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:48, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi HJ (KoTM-Knight of the Order of the Mop). (Yawn!, sorry long 'keyboard nap'!) I was talking about Davtras signature here! Is the Message Bar always Orange? What if a page had an orange background? ie no contrast? It may well be too server intensive to implement but my thought was if it automatically said, "You have a new message from xxxx"?

Gratitude in WP:ANI

Hi 220.101, thank you for the comment, here. I didn't know that page would be sent to an archive after 24 hours, so I missed a chance to tell you gratitude there. Though I knew his very undesirable habit, I reported it just in case. Thanks. --Akira Kouchiyama 10:08, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ohayo Kouchiyama! Sorry I did not answer you very quickly, I have been offline 'in real life'. Always good to advise the community and seek comment about such things. After MuZemike spoke to Grinpin (talk · contribs) they said they would not copy others' pages. Since your post they have removed some things from their userpage. Odd! -- 220.101 (talk) \Contribs 15:56, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ohayo 220.101, thanks for your greeting in Japanese! Grinpin seems to pretty like editing his userpage. He has edited it in many language versions of Wikipedia over and over again. I warned him about his downplaying a copyright, in some language versions and Wikimedia Commons. But he does not change his manner. He had better learn about copyright including GFDL, a little more. Anyway, have a good weekend! Cheers, --Akira Kouchiyama 16:52, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, having been the "Jewel in The Crown" of the former "British Empire" (apologies Brittanic Editors if I'm wrong, never studied modern history) India, I suppose, naturally took to cricket. Or, were they required to play whether they wanted to or not? Are there any indigenous Indian ball games?

Prompted by this thread I've just been researching Indian traditional sports. It looks like there are sports similar to cricket that were probably copied from cricket (or rounders, etc). Horrifyingly, however, there is Yubi lakpi - if I understand it correctly India invented God's own sport. However, I've also just learned about Marn Grook... which really has turned my world upside down... TFOWR 12:47, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Why isn't Sonia peeping?" She's working on a new composition which is due today, that's why. It's sounding quite cool- I've got it for yokobue and violin duet, with marimba, strings, timpani, moktak and shōko. (It's got a sort of pan-Asian feel, but is quite western in structure.) Sibelius 4 is being a pain (not to mention it doesn't have half the instruments!) so I've taken to writing it by hand. "Sonia of the Mountains"? I'll take that as a compliment, though I certainly hope it doesn't reflect my social skills...! TFOWR, those sports are all really interesting... odd how we all end up devising similar games whilst isolated. Says something about basic human nature, really- there's more we have in common than the obvious, I guess. sonia 01:11, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, didn't expect such a quick answer! So the line breaks in JCIDS at the end of the sentences are ignored? I went through the 'Actors' Section and removed all the line breaks, was that a waste of my time? Thought it might look 'ragged' on a wide screen?
• Wikis OK. Recently updated an article about a Finnish bridge that had sagged, but the article didn't mention it had been demolished since! Also fiddling around with articles about Radio-controlled helicopters, Miniature helicopters and similar. Getting a bit more active after going a bit quiet a week ago (one edit a day!) • Where are your 'Mountain Adventure' pics? 220.101 talk\Contribs 10:49, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Only double line breaks actually register. My screen's under 12" anyway, so I wouldn't be able to tell :P But certainly not a waste of time, as it would be a pain for me or anyone else to have to adapt to that while editing the article, and it breaks some formatting.
(Meh? See here.) Pics? I didn't have my camera, and am still attempting to wrangle photos from my friends! The six of us liked each other's company so much we're organising another two tramps, one in Sept and one in Oct. Should be good.

Yes, really, truly! I'm the cello on the outermost just above the audience as well, so I had to fake it convincingly. Most interesting performance I've ever done, I tell you. We played a piece by a local composer that was reminiscent of those old nursery songs (Polly put the kettle on, London Bridge, etc etc) and some children in the audience began to sing along...! sonia 06:11, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Cheeky girl! So break a leg is apparently not appropriate for a musical artiste? Weren't playing anything to do with the 'Scottish play' by any chance? 220.101 talk\Contribs06:25, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Love Macbeth. Shakespeare in general, but Macbeth's my favourite of the tragedies, the Merchant of Venice for the comedies. (We just found out we won an award for that particular performance, so apparently breaking a string was good luck!) About Mr. Hellcat, most obvious socking ever. He obviously hasn't got very much experience with trying to cause trouble... quite surreal, really. Also: I went to see Inception with a friend (it was his second time seeing it), quite enjoyed it. Two of my favourite topics- the subconscious mind, and the possible existence of parallel worlds underneath this one (and maybe even above!) It's nicely put together, and I actually ended up liking DiCaprio in it as well. sonia 07:32, 1 September 2010 (UTC) [reply]

Hi Sonia. Aha! od='outdent' Where on Earth Prime are you learning these obscure magicks? I am looking forward to Tomorrow When the War Began (film), which begins, tomorrow actually here in Oz. Parallel worlds hm? There is a novel set in NZ about such a thing, cannot think of the name, not a major work/author/publisher AFAIR. Farnhams Freehold + The Door into Summer are good and excellent stories respectively by Robert Heinlein on this subject, mixed with time travel which is practically the same thing, ie. altering the time line so unpleasant future does not occur, at least in you own time-line. Worldwar: In the Balance and others from the Worldwar series are acceptable, alternate History novels but not up to Heinlein IMHO.
• As for some RABid editors, I was surprised it took so long to block em! Actually saying we are gonna 'get' you or screw around with WP? Bang, instantly blocked I would think!
• You said(?) M-cb-th! Twice! Oh no! Your string will break again! (Maybe you need to find a cat and...?) How long were you 'miming' for? 220.101 talk\Contribs 08:33, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I "mimed" for a good hour or so. What would happen were I to attempt to rewrite the "M-cb-th" articles?
I remember reading Tomorrow when the War Began years ago- loved the title at first sight when the school library acquired the series. (Dating myself here, aren't I?) There hasn't been too much hype here over the movie, but I do intend to see it at some stage. Time travel = fantastic plot device if done properly. Sometimes it's been absolutely butchered. I'll take your advice re good reads- you have pretty good taste.
RAB: I think the block took so long to come because the admins were too busy laughing... However they were going to "eliminate" me, I'm looking forward to finding out. :) sonia 08:58, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Miming ≡ Acting! And apparently you don't say that plays name if you are in it! You say The Scottish Play or the The Bard's Play(Didn't know that one!) "According to a theatrical superstition, called the Scottish curse, speaking the name Macbeth inside a theatre will cause disaster." You probably know all this, you are a Librarian after all. This is an IP address, but you can indeed create an account with just numbers as far as I know. sonia 23:05, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
AFAIK as per Sonia, but not using 220.101.28.25™©® please! IP Address an administrator

Can an IP Address be an administrator? Wayne Olajuwon chat 23:43, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, as the IP can be re-assigned at any time, that would be a huge security breach. If this user wanted to be an admin, they would likely sign up, though Pilif12p :  Yo  23:54, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it's a pity isn't it! Though there is a certain prolific IP Editor (who has been editing for years) who I think they held a 'pseudo' RFA for, and they almost passed!. If Wayne Olajuwon (talk · contribs) wants to nominate me though? 220.101 talk\Contribs 00:16, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

220.101, shouldn't you have archives and do you want to be the first IP Address to be an admin? Wayne Olajuwon chat 00:39, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't think so as per Pilif12p: "the IP can be re-assigned at any time." (though I have had the same IP for 11 months, and 27 days.
  • I noted the comments re Adminship on your talk page. I would strongly suggest; 1) Not seeming too eager to be an admin, 2) Getting a lot more editing experience, including in areas such as anti vandal work and reporting, Username reporting ie wp:UAA (You can wp:welcome new users too when checking for username violations) 3) Wait for an established editor to nominate or suggest you for Adminship. They'll probably start suggesting it, when they think you are ready. 4) Look at a few RfA's to see what even well known editors go through, it can be harsh! 5) Try to create some good articles or other content creation. 6) Use edit summaries! Strike that!, you've created a load of articles! Sorry I didn't check! (I haven't actually created any, though I have greatly expanded a few biographies!

For some reason I've always thought T-WOF-R not T-FOW-R. I've reversed the middle letters haven't I, Wiki-dyslexia?. Had a look at NZ Flag debate, didn't know it was going on like here. Is that Grutness's flag design?

Why are we whispering? ;-) TWOFR is an easy mistake - one of these days I'll register it as a doppelganger account. One of these days... it took me weeks just to get round to TFOWR's right sock (talk)... My rellies are all fine - I did spend that day checking. Re: the flag debate, I like Hundertwasser's design (and I love his Kawakawa public toilet...!) but my preference, as always, is for a black flag worldwide. I'm in a minority, however... I'd settle for NZ becoming a republic... TFOWR 11:16, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nice Dunny entrance, is the interior as...interesting? His 'Curly' flag looks alright. Black probably doesn't show up very well, most flags are likely more colourful? Shhh, maybe Sonia won't hear us, she has assignments to do! 220.101 talk\Contribs 11:38, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You'll have to take my word for it that the men's interior is very colourful. I do have a picture of the women's interior, which seems just as bold ;-) The advantage of liking black flags is that at dusk all flags are black. The disadvantage is that a few minutes later black flags become invisible :-( TFOWR 18:19, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And you have my word that the women's toilet is also fascinatingly bright. I really like this flag, out of the choices- Hundertwasser's seems a little too- well, mathematical for me. Not as dynamic. 220.101, you're not disturbing me from anything- I've just got performances left. And alcohol-lemon experimenting in between... it doesn't go with rosé (my drink of choice) at all. :P sonia 04:21, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Would you believe that I was replying to TFOWR 'CDREUF' at the exact same time you posted here Sonia? Amazing. I must check my tin-foil cap for leakage. Good thing I checked, lest the dreaded edit conflict pop my fuses. BTW Davtra (talk) is semi-retired! 220.101 talk\Contribs 04:39, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I'm stopping whispering because Sonia's clearly not studying ;-) Sonia, I kind of agree about Hundertwasser's flag: I like the koru symbol, partly because it's a bit fractal-y, but I'm not keen on the colours. Kyle Lockwood's flag is better, but again I'm not completely keen. I'd like something black, or black and red - I like the Tino Rangatiratanga flag, for example (actually, I love it). But there's no way most of New Zealand would accept it, as it's so heavily part of Maori identity. (I'd love this flag, too, but suspect most of New Zealand wouldn't... pity!) I think we need red to keep Maori happy, but NZ could probably get away with a largely black flag with some red.
On the subject of lemon, I prefer whiskey neat, but honey-and-lemon in cheap whiskey goes well when I have a cold! Apart from that - alcoholic lemonade! It's great!
Davtra semi-retired? I've half-a-mind to issue a warning, followed by a block, if they don't get their act together, but I'll have to concede that real-life commitments do come first.
220.101 - I saw you post at Talk:Ireland - run away! Run away fast! You're a braver editor than me! Looks like it's "Kick An Admin Day", and HJ and you are the receivers! I was going to drop you this same message as I see your talk is unprotected at the moment (tin-foil cap leakage?). IMHO editors are being more than a bit unfair on HJ (over his edit summary in particular) as it was getting real late, like 4.40 AM his local! How many of those 'condemning' him put in as much time for Wikipedia as HJ does? Yes, I was surprised that an event that was apparently so 'pivotal' in Irelands history was unlinked. Or do you mean my crack about the arguing discussing? I shall be wary of anyone I meet with an Irish accent. I think Sonias off 'tramping' again, as she puts it (or maybe she meant next weekend?) UzT for me so if you reply, don't be surprised if I don't!- 220.101 talk\Contribs 15:22, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I try and keep my talkpage unprotected as much as possible - if it is ever protected it tends to be for very short periods - but I'm much less of a target than HJ. Most of the serious stuff I do at the moment is at WT:BISE, and that doesn't attract idiots to my talkpage. (The WT:BISE folk are all long-term editors, by-and-large). Incidentally, don't think I was warning you off Ireland or anything related - most definitely not, just that it's an area that scares me ;-)
I don't think I've been kicked that hard, I deserved what I got, and learnt from it. HJ seems to be living proof that "no good deed goes unpunished". As far as I can see HJ followed policy, did something beneficial, and now gets abused for it. I take on board the idea that HJ should have run it past, say, WP:AN first, but really - there's a list of pages that are highly used yet unprotected, and then we complain that HJ protects pages on the list? Come on! Still, HJ is big enough and ugly enough to take it on the chin. He'll bounce back. Anyway - get some sleep! TFOWR 15:31, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've finished my last two compositions for this semester- I just have to get into the studio to record them. (Haven't been well enough to sing yet for the one with words, so I'll have to wait.) Now it's just a flurry of performances, and what they call "immersion"- critiquing tons of different music as a group and individually, drawing from the historical context. I heard Douglas Lilburn's Nine Short Pieces a week or so ago and was quite taken by it, I'm looking to buy a CD to add to my "study music" pile. Right now I'm listening to this. Have you heard it? :)

Baseball Bugs comments

Obviously, IP addresses can't be administrators. But there is a compromise. You could create an account called 220_101_28_25, or some such, and then if your underlying IP changed it wouldn't matter. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:58, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A 'Bugs'. Ain't he cute?
Hey, it's Bugs! Very nice to hear from you. (First time on 'my' talk I think.) Up above someone actually thinks my talk page is funnier than yours! (see "What a comedy page!" above)
• It's a shame the 'great powers' of Wikipedia can't (or won't?) transfer my edits to an account. I mean if it simply can't be done, fine. But they can transfer edits between registered accounts? Maybe there are a lot more long term Static IP editors than we think and it would simply be too difficult? I mean if it has to be done manually and registered accounts can be done with 'tools' then I would understand. If you or anyone(tps) knows the technicalities, I'd be interested to know! I also recall that up to mid 1995 2005 it was being done. (can't locate the page right now) Perhaps the workload/server load was just too much?
• Suppose I could just copy everything over and redirect the IP talk etc to my new pages? Maybe, but the edit history would not go too, hmm?. And if 'my' IP is re-assigned? It appears however that I am the only IP editor in the 220.101.28.XXX range, and the only active IP editor in the 220.101.xxx.xxx range (there are 2 others, but they were blocked for usage by the same Sockpuppeteer!)
• I see you have been 'mentioned' at AN/I (I think) again. Please be careful you don't go too far, It'd be a great shame to 'lose' you!
• As I said, very happy to hear from you, drop by anytime! - 220.101 talk\Contribs 04:04, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Afaik, the software doesn't allow for IPs to be "renamed" the way accounts are, because they are technically not registered and thus don't already possess a unique id to rename. Reassigning used to be done but I think it was done manually which is a bit of work for the devs. Up to mid 1995?? You mean 2005? ;) It's not an issue to leave a note that this IP is/was yours on your userpage, a good number of us will already know you and vouch for that. There's a few sysops who used to edit under different accounts and didn't rename but started over, it wouldn't be the first time. sonia 04:21, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OOPs. Missed your post here somehow! In fact I think I was answering a post of yours (in the 'whispering' section) when you posted here. Yes, I did mean 2005! (fixed)
♦ Wouldn't want to start again! As I said to Bugs, if I redirect these pages (if that's allowed), it seems unlikely any other persons will be using this IP or even a very similar IP (apart from a certain sockpuppeteer). It seems there are only three 220.101.x IPs that have ever edited WP. It's just as simple to log off and say "Yes this is me" as an IP I suppose? After being around a year it should become pretty clear If it's not me?
♦ Then again, there is a bit of a kerfuffle over Admin. Marskell (talk) and whether another newer account saying they are 'Marskell' is Marskell or an imposter. Actually HJ has my E-mail address so can vouch for me if I E-mail him!. 220.101 talk\Contribs 08:08, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

information Note: Hello Journeyman IP, I'd just like to note that the eventual wikilink to "The Great Frost" was not the on you initially gave, due to another editor stating it was a different "The Great Frost". It now points to a section on the 1940 Famine article describing the apparently-Great-Frost-without-a-unique-name. This reminds me of a good scene from the Vicar of Dibley... (PS. TV tuner

Hiya, Ive replied on my talk page. Cheers Stanstaple (talk) 14:27, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

{Copied from my user page}

Hope you had a good lie-in, sleep is important man. The situation is sorted. Changing slots, unsurprisinly, had no obvious effect. I caught the tram back to the shop and part exchanged for a Hauppauge hybrid pci tuner. Funny thing is is that when I booted up there was no indication from windows that new hardware had been installed. Dejected but hoping for the best, I proceeded to install the supplied drivers, ran whatever tv watching software they bundle it with and picked up 2 (out of 4) analogue stations. At this stage I was just relieved the thing actually worked. I messed around with the aerial and ms media center for a bit- I was trying to see if I could get it to at least pick up the four terrestrial channels we have here. After scanning for additional channels for maybe a third time, a whole load of digital channels showed up. Digital terrestrial isn't even meant to be available here yet! I'm trying not to get too comfortable because I think they might be just testing the network; the thing might be gone tomorrow and I'll be left with 2 analogue channels with rubbish reception. Stranger still, my new card seems to be only mp2 compatible, whereas I was led to believe that Ireland was going down the mp4 road.
Anyway, that's how I spent my saturday- was meant to be cleaning the apartment, my house-mate's coming back to the apartment tomorrow, she's been away most of the summer. Got mired in pcdom for what seems like the first time since I tried to get frontier elite to work on my da's 486- memcheck and all that nonsense. I think it's me that's waffling now :).
Thanks again for your efforts; if nothing else they kept my morale up. I don't know how old you are but if you're not aware of it, have a look at working holiday visa; it might be time to root out your passport! I had one of the best years of my life in oz, maybe it's time for you to visit the antipodes:) G'day sir, is mise Stanstaple (talk) 22:35, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ahoy, matey! 'Tis true we've been at sea a goodly while but the navigator tells me with due confidence, having doubly-checked the almanac, that it be the Twentieth Day of the month of September - a day of dread 'pon this fair galleon - the day when lubbers no longer respect those honest sailors who reject the tyranny of navies and nations!
Furthermore, 'pon our last voyage to Southern Climes we did have the good fortune to capture a slave ship, and many of those poor souls consort with us still - why, my first mate is a fine fellow from your own dear land. And Master Mate tells me - if you would credit it - that the 20th Day began for you afore it began for me (a far-fetched claim, and one I but little believe, but stranger things I've seen at sea - and on land).
'Pon our ship we have taken a vow of silence, a vow that must not be broken until sunset, so little more can I say lest my scurvy crew mutiny - my tongue is sharp but their rapiers be sharper, and I fear many a Captain lost his vessel through loose talk in the taverns of Ports-mouth and Port-au-Prince. I trust you will understand that this is no reflection on you, Goodly Sir, but it be my knowledge that the Governor's spies be everywhere.
I ave the onour to remain, sir, your most umble and obedient servent, Capn. T. Fowr 08:07, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Blimey, I've been channelling my ancestors again! I believe my ancestors came from Great Britain, by and large, so "FOWR" is likely to refer to the fine, sunny, tropical weather we're blessed with on this island. ;-) The "T" I gather stood for "Truly", a common name back in those days. My research is incomplete, but I gather that while most "private sailors" left these shores in search of "adventure" (i.e. gold) this particular sailor had an aversion to water, and felt that a life afloat had to be better than a life under water, which is what most folk in Britain are blessed with. Apparently this isn't unusual, hence the following joke:
A native of Seattle (where it rains "quite a lot") visited his ancestral home, Glasgow. Even he was surprised by the relentless rain, and asked an old man in a pub whether it ever stopped raining. The old man replied: drum roll...
"I don't know, I'm only 92."

(edit conflict) Hello, Shirt58 (Shirt58, meet Sonia)
Took some time to work it out! Use this link http://toolserver.org/~mzmcbride/watcher/?db=enwiki_p&titles=User%3AShirt58 (Hm, less than 30!)
You can put anyones user name in place of yours(right after %3A) and, AFAIK, it will tell how many watchers they have. - 220.101 talk\Contribs 13:32, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What it won't do is tell you who's watching who. That would be a significant security breach. Another point is that if you're an established editor and you run it on yourself and it comes up 1 (i.e. only yourself), that's probably not a good sign. :( ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 14:51, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Buggsy! Twice now you have graced my talk page with your... furriness! Did you catch my reply here to your prior visit? (10 September) (Actually anything under 30 it does not read at all) ps. It's 1AM+ here so I may have to go. - 220.101 talk\Contribs 15:04, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I saw. It was cute. Just don't take a joke too fur. :) 1 AM. You must be on the other side of the globe, and probably anticipating "springtime". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 15:15, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Geolocate says you're in New South Wales. So whatever became of Old South Wales? Was it demolished and rebuilt in place? Or was it just a major makeover? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 15:17, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think its still there around Wales somewhere, or is that the British Isles. Maybe here South Wales Valleys? Yes spring is here and soon the bunnies will be... . It's also late(r) and I havent eaten (or even 'cooked') my dinner! 220.101 talk\Contribs 15:48, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
