Next issue: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Issue/Next, 2010

Due for publication: Error: first parameter cannot be parsed as a date or time.!  Deadline this week is 3:00 UTC, Monday Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Issue/Next.
Once all tasks are complete, the editor-in-chief (or nominated deputy) should complete the publication process.

Notices for contributors this week

  • Tuesday–Thursday: start. Start all pages that are to be included in the next edition. NAN and INN stories/links listed below.:
  • Saturday–Sunday: mature versions. Aim to have reasonably mature drafts of all pages for comments by the Managing Editor, fellow journalists, and other interested users. Signpost editors recommend any structural changes, reductions in length, expansions in scope, necessary coordination between pages, postponement to subsequent issue. Copy-editors go through the drafts.
  • Late Sunday – early Monday: trouble-shooting. Fresh stories added to INN and NAN by the "Next issue deadline" (only if sufficiently topical and important).
  • Monday: last minute tweaks & copyedits; publication.
Discussion moved to talk. Week-pertinent discussions only here, thank you =) ResMar

News and notes

In progress

I don't think I will be able to cover this completely this week. Lot of IRL stuff going on. The Board Meeting resolutions deserve to be a separate article, however. ResMar 14:53, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it is important to cover the Board resolutions, but that was already done in the last issue (Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2010-10-11/News and notes#Board resolutions), as I would have thought you were aware because you complained about them having been the top story. The five year targets and the linked blog post by Sue Gardner (from August) were also mentioned in earlier issues. What is indeed new is some of her remarks in the IRC office hour (e.g. that the Controversial content study was discussed for three hours in the meeting, apparently without leading to a resolution as planned) and perhaps on Foundation-l.
The August report card was covered in the last issue, too, and it has nothing to do with the Board meeting (the report card is or should be released every month).
In addition, there were already several other errors in the short draft (e.g. September instead of October twice, etc). You can't be blamed if RL requirements keep you from contributing to the Signpost, but if you do contribute, please take the necessary time to prepare articles carefully. For the past few weeks, each N&N has necessitated significant fixes, sometimes at the last minute (such as this week when we were already late) or even after publication.
I'll cover [1] and a story about Wikimedia Argentina.
It would be great if someone could cover these as brief notes:

The following merit at least brief notes:

  • What's interesting about WikiPop is that the Brooklyn Museum did the project, entirely on their own initiative, and Rebecca was able to contribute. I think Wikimedia NYC didn't know about in advance the project until the blog posts, though has worked with the Brooklyn Museum previously on Wikipedia Loves Art. The use of iPads is also interesting, seeing it can simplify implementing something such as this. --Aude (talk) 01:43, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • [3] - as David Gerard points out, the position of the author make the quotes about Wikipedia newsworthy.

Regards, HaeB (talk) 00:44, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, at this point I am actually considering dropping ITN for this issue (following a suggestion by Tony), since no work has been done on it yet and we are running late. Tinucherian has indicated he will do a write-up of this rather interesting article, but hasn't done so yet. I could spend some time myself on whipping up brief one-sentence notes for the above items, but it would still be a very meager section. On the other hand, while there are some interesting items (some of which will be stale by next week), there would be no deadly sins of omission.
Regards, HaeB (talk) 18:44, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I would understand dropping the ITN section but I really think the Brooklyn Museum story is worth covering, there are multiple posts about Wikipedia related initiatives at the Brooklyn museum apart from all the praise, Maybe it could be moved to another section or be highlighted to be covered next week. Seems finished, although coverage of the Brooklyn Museum's iPad software (see above) would still be nice. Regards, HaeB (talk) 18:44, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done, although there is more there for a regular story, I found only a brief story was pertinent to the tech report section, the rest seems unrelated to the tech-report aspect and deserves to be covered elsewhere. Theo10011 (talk) 21:49, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Needs copy-editing; I've removed the negative from the title; needs to be shorter, snappier. Is FCDW, whatever its acronym is, involved? That might be a good idea (not wanting to usurp the co-authors, of course). Tony (talk) 08:51, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I told Sandy and listed it on the FCDW page. Considering the seniority of the writers, I'm sure no one will have any problems. ResMar 23:45, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Marking this as "Done" now in the light of this discussion. I agree it is a bit long, but it is stylistically well written and seems to have been thoroughly proofread. I don't the picture is a good illustration though (it is not even of a jury), replacing it while keeping the humor. Regards, HaeB (talk) 20:18, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Regular responsibilities

Signpost journalists can claim responsibility for regular features, and continue writing their beat for as long as they wish. If you would like to be a regular writer for The Signpost, add your name to the appropriate task. If you'd be willing to cover a story that is usually covered by another editor, or are willing to cover it sporadically when the normal writer can't, add your name to the Backup list so you can be contacted when the need arises – the more the merrier. If a beat is not assigned to anyone and no draft for the next issue is listed above, anyone should feel free to write it that week.
