Humberto Leal (January 16, 1973 – July 7, 2011) was[1] an inmate on death row in Texas, United States for the May 21, 1994, rape and murder of 16 year old Adria Sauceda in San Antonio. Adria's nude body was found in a dirt road. When first discovered, her head had been bashed in and it was bleeding. Her head was flinching or jerking. There was a 30 to 40 pound asphalt rock roughly twice the size of Adria's skull lying partially on Adria's left arm. Blood was underneath this rock. A smaller rock with blood on it was located near Adria's right thigh. There was a gaping hole from the corner of Adria's right eye extending to the center of her head from which blood was oozing. Adria's head was splattered with blood. There was a bloody and broken stick approximately 14 to 16 inches long with a screw at the end of it protruding from Adria's vagina. Another 4 to 5 inch piece of the stick was lying to the left side of Adria's skull. The police made a videotape of the crime scene portions of which were admitted into evidence.[2] U.S President Barack Obama, the U.S. State Department and Mexico had all asked Texas for a last-minute reprieve for Leal to stop his execution, which was carried out, as scheduled, on July 7, 2011.[2]

Leal was born in Monterrey, Mexico,[3] and came to the USA as a child.[4] As a Mexican national, he was entitled to seek assistance from the Mexican consulate in the USA, which would have obtained legal counsel for him. The fact that he was not informed of his rights has led to controversy, and a campaign to reconsider his case.[5]

Huntsville Unit where Humberto Leal had been on death row since 1994

Humberto Leal had decided that his last meal will consist of fried chicken, pico de Gallo and guisada tacos.[6]

Comments by the White House

Barack Obama's White House administration has made a number of comments concerning the execution of Leal.[7]

Carrying out Leal's execution would cause "irreparable harm" to US interests abroad. [7]

That breach would have serious repercussions for United States foreign relations, law-enforcement and other co-operation with Mexico, and the ability of American citizens traveling abroad to have the benefits of consular assistance in the event of detention. [7] [8]

These interests include protecting Americans abroad, fostering co-operation with foreign nations, and demonstrating respect for the international rule of law,". [7]
