Juan Mateos and other articles

I'm working on Juan Mateos and will let you know once I'm done. I have a couple of things to add to JMS - I remember seeing an old photo of the square while it was being excavated for the construction of the underground air-raid shelter, so I'm trying to remember where I saw it in order to upload it. I've also found quite a bit of info on John Mackintosh himself, so it might be a good idea to start one on him too. Regards, --Gibmetal 77talk 12:15, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think we're done with Juan Mateos... --Gibmetal 77talk 14:23, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: John Mackintosh Square

Sorry I havent reviewed it yet, I've had a few busy days as well as being unable to go online most of yesterday due to a Gibraltar-wide power failure also affecting Gibtelecom's services even after power was restored. I notice you've already moved it to the mainspace, however, I'll still have a look at it and might add some more. Normal editing should resume soon, just bare with me a little... --Gibmetal 77talk 22:40, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. Yes I'll think of something for DYK. I already did for Juan Mateos. --Gibmetal 77talk 07:01, 30 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The article is looking good! The events section can be expanded a bit by adding something on Hassan and Isola's visit to the UN, when crowds filled the square to wish them well and then again to welcome them back. The Gibraltar Government Lottery also used to be drawn publicly at the square and still is at times. However, I think the evacuation section has too much irrelevant detail. I suggest trimming the background information so the bit relevant to the square is more prominent and linking to History of Gibraltar during World War II or the future article on the evacuation. Your thoughts? --Gibmetal 77talk 19:42, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've brushed up on the History of nationality in Gibraltar and it seems you may be right. Feel free to reinstate it, especially if it's what the source says (I'd be grateful if you could check the source when you can). Regards, --Gibmetal 77talk 20:31, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi to you

Hi Ecemaml.

You are completely right. On the other hand, I think that we all can work together more easily (at least, I know we have to work together if we want to edit the Gib article) and I was giving it another try, because if we don't solve this issue now, sooner or later we will end up wasting lots of time. Also, I didn't want to keep editing the Gibraltar articles until the dispute was over (in order to avoid bad feelings): when this is over I want to make some edits in a few Gib articles... Anyway, you are right and I won't dedicate much more time.

Meanwhile, I am mostly working -offline- on sources for a completely different article: Karl Popper. It's a shame that this article does not even reach the Good category because of lack of citations (I understand why, because I'm having a pretty hard job going over all of the material, years after I last saw it...)

I really don't think that you will get blocked (I really think that it would be completely disproportionate) and, in the worst case, three months is nothing! (and, sadly, it's less and less every year...) Tell me anything that I can do to lend a hand. Un abrazo. -- Imalbornoz (talk) 16:51, 4 May 2010 (UTC) PS: I sent you an e-mail regarding a totally off-wiki hobby, did you receive it?[reply]

Re: Off

That's a real shame as it seems we were on a roll! However, I find it's not worth stressing over anything at all. If you do decide to stay away for sometime, you'll be missed but I'll try to carry on working on new articles by myself. Let me know as soon as you return. Regards, --Gibmetal 77talk 22:53, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No prolem. I'll be looking into Casemates next. Regards, --Gibmetal 77talk 06:48, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Back

Good to see you're back! I'm off to a Museum lecture now. I'll catch up with editing tonight. --Gibmetal 77talk 18:14, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It was quite interesting, but it was just a lecture held at the John Mackintosh Hall theatre so nothing to photograph there. Here's the synopsis and here's a picture of the traditional red cloaks. I don't have a photo of Bomb House (Gibraltar Museum) yet but it's a photo I have in mind together with another thousand or so - I haven't forgotten about taking pics of the shrine and cathedral of St Mary the Crowned as you requested! Today I had the remainder of my stitches out and soon I'll be able to carry a bit more weight so I can take my camera bag with me. I've been finishing work late these days so I'll have to find a weekend for this. Regards, --Gibmetal 77talk 22:15, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This arbitration case has been closed and the final decision is available at the link above. The following is a summary of the remedies enacted:

  • Any uninvolved administrator may, in his or her own discretion, impose sanctions on any editor editing Gibraltar or other articles concerning the history, people, or political status of Gibraltar if, after a warning, that editor repeatedly or seriously violates the behavioral standards or editorial processes of Wikipedia in connection with these articles.
  • Discretionary sanctions imposed under the provisions of this decision may be appealed to the imposing administrator, the appropriate administrators' noticeboard (currently the Arbitration Enforcement noticeboard) or the Arbitration Committee.
  • Gibnews (talk · contribs) is topic-banned from editing the Gibraltar article and other articles concerning the history, people, and political status of Gibraltar, broadly construed, for one year. Should Gibnews return to editing relating to Gibraltar following this period, he is reminded to edit in accordance with the principles discussed in this decision and will be subject to the discretionary sanctions remedy should he fail to do so.
  • Gibnews is strongly warned that nationally or ethnically offensive comments are prohibited on Wikipedia and that substantial sanctions, up to a ban from the site, will be imposed without further warning in the event of further violations.
  • Justin A Kuntz (talk · contribs) is topic-banned from editing Gibraltar and other articles concerning the history, people, and political status of Gibraltar, broadly construed, for three months. Should Justin A Kuntz return to editing relating to Gibraltar following this period, he is reminded to edit in accordance with the principles discussed in this decision and will be subject to the discretionary sanctions remedy should he fail to do so.
  • Ecemaml (talk · contribs) is admonished for having, at times, assumed bad faith and edited tendentiously concerning the history and political status of Gibraltar.
  • Editors are reminded that when editing in subject areas of bitter and long-standing real-world conflict, it is all the more important to comply with Wikipedia policies such as assuming good faith of all editors including those on the other side of the real-world dispute, writing with a neutral point of view, remaining civil and avoiding personal attacks, utilizing reliable sources for contentious or disputed assertions, and resorting to dispute resolution where necessary.
  • Any editor who is closely associated with a particular source or website relating to the subject of Gibraltar or any other article is reminded to avoid editing that could be seen as an actual or apparent attempt to promote that source or website or to give it undue weight over other sources or website in an article's references or links. To avoid even the appearance of impropriety, it may be best in these circumstances to mention the existence of the source or website on the talkpage, and allow the decision whether to include it in the article to made by others.

For the Arbitration Committee, ---- Александр Дмитрий (Alexandr Dmitri) (talk) 23:18, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Advice...

Ecemaml - I suggest you avoid all contact with Justin and Narson. Ignore their posts elsewhere on the arbcom case and don't post on their talk page. Let's just conduct ourselves with decorum on the Gib pages, being civil etc. If they are not willing to draw a line in the sand now, then perhaps in time they may be willing to put the past behind them on the basis of our contributions from this point forwards. El Calpense - expansion

FYI, I've purchased the latest Gibraltar Heritage Journal which includes an article on this newspaper by Joshua Marrache. I'll therefore be working on expanding the history section. Regards, --Gibmetal 77talk 19:14, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea on the photo wishlist! Actually, yesterday was the Museum's open day and even though photography is not allowed within the museum I took my camera to take some shots of the area (Bomb House, both cathedrals, etc). I've already uploaded a couple and I'll go uploading the rest as and when I can. Luckily, before I left home yesterday I saw you were working on the Gibraltar Archives so I took a shot of its entrance. I had also just learned that the Imprenta Calpense was located at College Lane so I went to have a look. Lo and behold I found a doorway bearing the plaque "Calpense House", so I took a shot of that too! --Gibmetal 77talk 15:38, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

2006 Referendum

Hi Ecemaml. I undid your "restoration" of the 2006 paragraph. I'm not sure whether you missed it, but I had added mention of and a link to the referendum at the point where the Constitution is discussed, in the 2006 referendum. [3]. The "recent history" has way too much information - we need to be ruthless in cutting it down, and this is really a matter for the politics section, which can be covered in detail in the Politics of Gibraltar and Gibraltarian constitutional referendum, 2006 articles. Orphaned non-free media (File:Dorothy_Ellicott.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Dorothy_Ellicott.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 06:33, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help about copyrights

Hi Ecemaml,

Do you think that some picture here could be copyright free? You can see that they were taken in 1909 and published in "El Periódico Melillense". (BTW, the article where I want to use it is about the discoverer of epidural anaesthesia, something that I suppose you have got recently acquainted with... Any comment about the draft will be welcome!!!) Thanks! -- Imalbornoz (talk) 23:45, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much!! -- Imalbornoz (talk) 23:09, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Uh-oh... I'm not sure what category to choose for the license tag when uploading it in Commons... "Author died more than 70 years ago"? Thanks for the help. -- Imalbornoz (talk) 23:31, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I've uploaded three pictures to Commons[4][5][6]. Could you take a look to see if everything (overall copyrights) is OK? Thank you! It's pretty exciting to be developing my first article, with pictures and all! -- Imalbornoz (talk) 10:37, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Talking about this article and about copyrights... No kidding!!! You can see that this article is a great deal your very own copyright ;) (much of the content comes from the Spanish Wikipedia).
Well, about the pictures... Bingo!! Missed all of them... It seems I'm clumsy enough to completely mess up the concept of "source" for the pictures. Does "source" mean the place where I found them? In that case, maybe I should say I picked two of the pictures from here (Figs. 6 and 8) and here. At least one of the pictures is a drawing by Pagés himself (who died in 1923), another one is undated (but from earlier than 1923 for obvious reasons) and the last one is from 1909. I have added those sources.[7][8][9] Would that be enough?
Or maybe I should only use them for the Pagés article (like in the case of Christiaan Barnard)? Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience and the dejà vu... -- Imalbornoz (talk) 16:40, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have just realised you had been improving things in the article (menos mal que I didn't unconsciously undo any of them while doing a recent major edit). Thank you!! Of course your contributions are very much welcome. I was thinking I'd keep working at my user's page (there's still some work to do before the article gets to the point I had in mind) but I don't know if you'd prefer that I publish it so that you can contribute to it in the open. What do you think? -- Imalbornoz (talk) 22:32, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The changes are all useful. I only have a couple of questions (I don't know if they're typos or just things I don't understand): why de-link "epidural" in the bio-template? and why link Provincial Hospital of Madrid (a wonderful group of doctors worked there in the beginning of the XX century, but there's no article in es. nor en.)? Thanks again for the collaboration!! -- Imalbornoz (talk) 23:27, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like a copy of my watch list?

That way you can be sure to edit every article I've ever edited. Justin talk 08:19, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Justin, I don't know which your problem is. Otherwise I'd understand a message as weird as this. Talking seriously, I edit a large amount of articles and the fact that you've edited any of them in the past do not make them unsuitable for me to edit them. If you think otherwise, I'll think that you haven't understood anything about editing in Wikipedia (articles are not yours, as you possibly know). In the future, please avoid your usual confrontational attitude, at least with me. I don't want to escalate your behaviour, but I'll do it if I forced to. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 09:10, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please do escalate it but I suggest you read WP:PETARD. I am not being confrontational but by following me around you most definitely are. I have asked you to back off, others have also done so. You would do well to heed their advice and cease from seeking a confrontation. Rest assured I will escalate it but not oblige you with an intemperate response as you hope. Neither do I appreciate or respect editors who have to resort to threats of censure or admin action to bully and intimidate. Justin talk 10:00, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Gibraltar Museum

Hi Ecemaml. Thanks for fixing the broken link in the coordinates which now reflect the true coordinates of the museum, however, the map now displays its location in the Bay of Gibraltar just off Camp Bay! I wonder if we can do anything about that, it might be the coordinates in the Location Map Template haven't been set up correctly... --Gibmetal 77talk 16:19, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well spotted! After messing about on Google maps for a while I think it's now sorted. --Gibmetal 77talk 22:06, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can't seem to figure out why it isn't working in Rock of Gibraltar : (. The rest are done. --Gibmetal 77talk 23:14, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for sorting it out. I've tweaked them slight to place the marker exactly on the summit (O'Hara's Battery). These coordinates however, mark the eastern end of the Strait of Gibraltar so there must be something wrong (maybe within the mountain infobox itself). At least all the other maps are working now : ). --Gibmetal 77talk 19:47, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The actions commited by the Israeli Armed Forces when seizing foreign-flagged ships on international waters (...) and when causing the death of some of its passengers, do clearly violate the International Law (...) No State whatsoever can arrogate faculties for restricting the freedom of movement of any ship on international waters, much less for storming foreign-flagged ships, exception made of the few exceptions authorized by the International Law (piracy, slave trade, suspicions of fake identifications, etc.). Thus, it is not legitimate to resort to the Maritime War Law concepts of a blocked zone or blocked port, when such a war is inexistent (...) In 1988 it was agreed (...) the International Covenant for the Supression of Illicit Actions against the Maritime Navigation (SUA) that (...) typifies as a crime taking control of a ship by force, or forcing (exerting violence over) shipped persons, for whatever private or public reason, for whatever economic or terrorist interests. (...) The Israeli State recently ratified this Covenant (it entered into force for Israel on April 2009) (...) SUA Article 6.1 establishes as the forceful jurisdiction for sanctioning(?) the illicit actions the same country whose flag carries the ship on which or against which the forceful action has been taken.

First of all thank you for the link and I note I hadn't followed all the steps. I started to do so then realised you'd done it anyway.

Secondly, closing a delete discussion prematurely of the nomination of an editor you have been in conflict seems an abuse of admin powers to me but thats by the by.

Thirdly please look at that editors contribution history and note how many images of coats of arms have been deleted. Just for information. Justin talk 11:42, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Addendum:

Just checking, before closing you did of course check that it corresponds with the heraldic description? Probably not but as noted on the talk page there are some basic errors in the depiction. Justin talk 12:05, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah I see, tell me do you plan on going through all of my image uploads? I do find your sudden pre-occupation with all of my edits to be uncomfortable and it feels like you're trying to pick a fight to be honest. From my recollection I didn't upload that to commons but originally wikipedia and it was transferred to Commons by someone else. It was a genuine mistake if I have inadvertently used the wrong licensing but a valid FUR could easily be made if its needed. I'm not a copyright expert.
BTW E. Biggeri was very talented artist specialising in sailing ships (I may be biased as I have several prints of his work). I find it amazing no-one has thought to write an article about him. Justin talk 13:10, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Contributions to other Wikipedias

In regards to your comments on your talk page in the Spanish Wikipedia, I do contribute a small bit to Wikipedias in other languages. I know some Spanish and French, so I make small contributions to those Wikipedias. By far I contribute the most to the English Wikipedia.

I do so especially on the Spanish Wikipedia because there need to be articles there on more subjects in regards to government and society. Because I do not know much Spanish I write small articles and, in many instances, have native speakers check my work. I intend for native speakers and people with high fluency to take my stubs and expand them.

On user talk pages I do speak English to people who indicate that they know English or accept English on their talk pages. The users did not tell me that I cannot speak English on user talk pages, and several Spanish language Wikipedians do respond in English on my user talk page or other user talk pages. When contributing to article talk pages I would have to post in Spanish.

When writing stubs or making small contributions I am happy writing in Spanish. When discussing articles, especially one on one, I prefer to speak English as I can articulate myself very well in that language. I will make do with Spanish or French in their respective Wikipedias if the users do not know English or if I am posting on article talk pages or Wikipedia discussion pages.

Users sometimes respond in English even on Wikipedia talk pages: es:Wikipedia:Café/Portal/Archivo/Miscelánea/2010/01#FBI_--_Bur.C3.B3_Federal_de_Investigaciones had a user respond totally in English to my query in Spanish (with an English "original" attached to clear any confusion) WhisperToMe (talk) 22:48, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    • Accept discussion in English on your own Spanish Wikipedia page and direct users to talk on that page for all queries about the Spanish Wikipedia - And likewise regarding other language Wikipedias
    • Or: Direct English-language queries about any language Wikipedia written in English to your English Wikipedia page - And likewise regarding all languages
  • You need to have a way to receive feedback about, for example, the Spanish Wikipedia written in English. Even people with limited fluency in Spanish need a forum to discuss the Spanish Wikipedia one on one with a particular user. The Spanish Wikipedia does not have something like ja:Wikipedia:Help for Non-Japanese Speakers - If that was the case, you could direct inquiries regarding that to the help page and ask people to link to the help thread on your talk page
  • In addition many users with accounts on many Wikipedias direct all queries in any language to a particular user talk page on a given Wikipedia. I.E. a user most active on the French Wikipedia may direct all queries about any Wikipedia or Wikimedia activities to his French Wikipedia user talk page.
  • Lastly, from looking at my userpage people on ES do speak English to people who contribute to ES but are not fluent in Spanish. It's not a pointless discussion. Many Wikipedias specify how non-language speakers communicate in regards to the Wikipedia. If you want, propose that ES opens a "Help for Non-Spanish Speakers" page

You were mentioned

Your name has been briefly mentioned at WP:ANI#Cross-Wiki sabotage. Please comment if you know anything about the events on the Spanish Wikipedia. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 18:40, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply in the ANI thread, which is now archived at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive627#Cross-Wiki sabotage. It appears that the dispute at Choripán has not continued beyond 25 July, so that no action by enwiki admins is needed for now. But it is helpful to know the background. Food articles have led to very strange (nationalistic) edit wars in the past, so it is good to watch these. EdJohnston (talk) 17:03, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Finale

Really there should be appear in the article the presence of the Spanish system in Italy, that of the Spanish Road, and therefore that of the marquisate of Finale, in fact, the acquisition of the marquisate of Finale was set on to assure a port to Milan, but to avoid enmity with Genoa, Spanin continued entrusting in the Most Serene Republic of Genoa. Block

Hi Ecemaml, I would be delighted if you could tell me why do you think I deserved a 31-hours ban but user Ensada, who had also reverted the article 4 times in just over an hour, did not get the same punishment. Is it just because he’s your friend and I am not or did I miss something else?-188.221.186.244 (talk) 23:57, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
