The American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) is a very small[1] national medical association of conservative pediatricians and other healthcare professionals in the United States. The College was founded in 2002 by Dr. Joseph Zanga, as a protest against the mainstream American Academy of Pediatrics support for LGBT parental rights[2][3].

Controversy

The positions taken by the American College of Pediatricians reflect the socially conservative Christian value of its founder Dr. Zanga. These positions include:

  • Opposition to same-sex marriage
  • Opposition to same-sex family adoption
  • Opposition to contraception other than sexual abstinence (including Emergency contraception)
  • Opposition to reproductive rights
  • Opposition to embryonic stem cell research[4][5]
  • Opposition to HPV vaccination

Criticism and counter-arguments

The website of the college seeks to present the college as a serious professional medical organization similar to the American Academy of Pediatrics. As a result they are often sourced by anti-gay news outlets as though they are in some way analogous. Several have suggested ACPeds would more accurately be described as a policy institute rather than a medical organization. Since its founding the college has championed many social conservative causes. But completed little actual research. Several opinion pieces have been put forward by the organization. But no work has been submitted for peer review. Nor has any such work been sponsored by the group.

The College states that allowing same-sex adoption is "inappropriate, potentially hazardous to children, and dangerously irresponsible,"[6]. Despite the findings of several mainstream studies that found no meaningful difference between children raised by same-sex and heterosexual couples.
