Andrew John Clyde Landeryou (born 19 August 1970)[citation needed] is an Australian blogger, journalist, and businessman. In recent years, he has attracted attention through his website "The Other Cheek: Andrew Landeryou's Blog of Freedom," and VEXNEWS which has been the subject of media comment.[citation needed] He first became known due to publicity about his business dealings with billionaire Solomon Lew and the Melbourne University Student Union.[citation needed]

Background

Landeryou is the son of Bill Landeryou, a former Leader of the Opposition and then the Government in the Victorian Legislative Council and a minister in the Australian Labor Party Victorian state government of John Cain. Andrew Landeryou has been active in the past in the Labor Party, and particularly the Labor Right faction, although he had never been a candidate for public office and is not a member of any political party. Landeryou's extensive political connections in the Labor and Liberal parties have added to media interest in his work.

Student politics

Landeryou was elected as President of MUSU in 1990. His support for the Australian involvement in the Gulf War and for Israel aroused the opposition of left-wing student groups.

Business interests

After leaving university Landeryou went into business. The business was initially successful and was valued at $32 million by investors including Solomon Lew, although a dispute with that shareholder caused it to go out of business. Later Lew sued Landeryou and the dispute caused considerable press attention and the eventual sale of his house.

Other investments by Landeryou attracted press attention in 2004 and 2005, after it emerged he had assisted a company that had leased space in the Melbourne University Student Union where he had been President years before. He had no involvement in the Union by that stage other than as an investor in a company that paid a record amount for space in the building to operate a bar. Previously the bar had operated at a substantial loss. The business was successful and was sold for a substantial profit. It was claimed by political rivals that there was a conflict of interests in Landeryou's involvement in that business, claims he vigorously denied.

VEXNEWS

In 2005, Landeryou established a weblog called "The Other Cheek - Andrew Landeryou's Blog of Freedom", which has media attention for its reports and commentary on Australian politics, particularly the internal affairs of political parties, about which Landeryou is well-informed. He used the blog regularly to attack members of the party's Socialist Left faction and now more regularly the Greens.

Landeryou's blog regularly accuses the Melbourne newspaper The Age of politically motivated left wing bias, including against himself. He has attacked Age journalist Leonie Wood over what he claimed was her "secret relationship" with anti-gaming crusader Kate Dempsey while writing articles about Landeryou's company, which had gaming interests. Other targets have included Evan Thornley, a businessman who was an ALP member of the Victorian Legislative Council. and retired journalist Lawrence Money.

Landeryou is an independent journalist[1] and the publisher of vexnews.com, a popular Australian news and current affairs website[2] that is frequently involved in issues of controversy[3].
