I spent some time looking for sources, and there's a bunch in the archives if you are interested. There's a syndicated story by George Will (he wrote it on Oct. 25) that went out across the wires on October 26, 2009 ([http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/10/25/gops_new_lightning_rod_98864.html copy]) that makes the unbelievable claim that Marcus didn't know his wife was running for State Senator. It also says "She and her husband danced at Jimmy Carter's inauguration." Further, there's a MSNBC transcript for July 12, 2011 called "Marcus Bachmann Tries to Cure Gays"; a CNN transcript for July 13, 2011 covering a segment called "Inside the Bachmann Family"; and a FOX News Channel transcript for July 14, 2011 callled "Jon Stewart Calls Out Marcus Bachmann". The Special Barnstar
I'm very jealous that you got to hang out with RD. Nevertheless, here is the appropriate barnstar (or most that I could find) for improving WP. I love it, and you made WP a better place. Obamafan70 (talk) 14:35, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Me in a helicopter over New York, my hometown. This was a birthday gift I gave my two nephews.

Welcome back!

Hopefully you plan on staying a while? --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 21:54, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Ponyo - I appreciate that :-) I plan to stick around for awhile, add some images, chillax with the Wiki peeps. --Take care, David Shankbone 21:58, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cool, the first pint is on me!

Hey, that's great news. A big welcome from me too! :) SlimVirgin talk|contribs 22:01, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
@Ponyo - glug glug glug - I owe you one, and that was tasty! @Slim - missed you! Hey, I have a really exciting photography thing coming up on October 19. PETA has organized a protest of McDonald's with midget stripper dwarfs from Centerfold Strips—which bills itself as the number one source for midget and dwarf strippers—who will be dressed as chickens shouting "I AM NOT A NUGGET!" It was supposed to happen in September but got rained out, so they had to reapply for permits, etc. Needless to say, I'm excited that this event was ever dreamed up by anybody, not to mention to photograph it :-D --Take care, David Shankbone 22:10, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Photographs of midget stripper dwarfs dressed as chickens and shouting "I am not a nugget"? All I can say is ... David Shankbone is back!! :D SlimVirgin talk|contribs 22:17, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome back! We've never interacted, but i have noticed your work, and am glad to see you return. Oh, and if David H. Koch or Charles G. Koch are ever in your area, can you get some Photos? I believe that David is of David H. Koch Theater fame so he might have reason to be in NYC. Bonewah (talk) 22:57, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the message, Bonewah. I know the Kochs come into New York a good bit, but they are notoriously press shy, so it may be quite a feat to get them. But I'll keep my eyes peeled for opportunities. Thanks again for the welcome back. --David Shankbone 21:57, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help us please

Mr. Shankbone,

You seem to have incredible skills in getting celeb pics. Us wikipedians working on the articles for the soap opera actresses: Esta TerBlanche & Rebecca Budig have found it impossible to find properly licensed pictures of them. Any assistance you could offer would be greatly appreciated,

Regards. Wlmg Wlmg (talk) 02:34, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmmm - It looks like TerBlanche is in South Africa and Budig in Los Angeles (?). I'm New York-based, so I can only shoot people if they come through my town and I know about it. If you hear either plans to do so, let me know. Thanks for the nice note and happy editing Wlmg. --David Shankbone 03:50, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
TerBlanche is also in LA, but hey you never know if they show up in New York.Wlmg (talk) 02:38, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, well, if you follow them and discover when one or the other will visit NYC (highly likely) then let me know and I'll see what I can do. --David Shankbone 04:00, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Image of Rufus Wainwright

LOVE the new image you uploaded of Rufus Wainwright! I hope you don't mind that I added it to a few Wainwright-related pages. The image deserves to be displayed proudly! Keep up the great work. --Another Believer (Talk) 23:30, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Another Believer, I really appreciate that :-) --David Shankbone 00:46, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Richard Dawkins

I was getting ready to revert your change of the image at Richard Dawkins (a fair bit of nonsense happens there), but then I saw what you had done. Congratulations, an excellent image! Johnuniq (talk) 03:19, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks, Johnuniq - I have options I am about to give the regular editors of the article to choose from (though sometimes that can cause more drahmaz!). --David Shankbone 03:36, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree wholeheartedly with Johnuniq; WP would be a much better space with more users like yourself. Regards, Obamafan70 (talk) 19:24, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! Thank you! --David Shankbone 23:02, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, David I'm still here despite all the ups and downs. As a New Yorker and Marine, I'm too tough to let things get in my way. Hey, it is always nice to hear from one of my dearest and best friends here. Tony the Marine (talk) 20:06, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer permission

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:21, 5 October 2010 (UTC) [reply]

Do you think you could find some free pictures of those activities? There's a ton of non-free material out there (a quick search on youtube is proof enough), but I didn't have any luck finding something that's allowable on Wikipedia. I've done a little search on flickr, but even fully-dressed pics like [1] are "all rights reserved". Thanks, Tijfo098 (talk) 14:37, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Daniel, good to hear from you! There has been some amazing work done on that article in the last year. I almost didn't recognize it. --David Shankbone 20:54, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers

Hi, great to see you back!

Looking for one of your photos, I have seen that you have forgotten to license some of the images in Commons [2]

Cheers, --Ecelan (talk) 17:09, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for the welcome back, and thanks for the heads up about the missing licenses - fixed (at least the ones in the first 250 ;-) --David Shankbone 00:02, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion about using one's own images

David, I didn't feel comfortable simply undoing your addition to Michael Lucas (director) a second time - perhaps I was being overly officious. I've started an informal discussion here. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 19:17, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

lol - no worries, I undid it. I was just being playful. Good discussion to have regardless, so good luck with it. --David Shankbone 23:07, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A Little Help Please...

David, I've seen a lot of your photos and I'm really impressed. You are great! Do you happen to have any Whitney Houston images? I really need them for use in Infobox.. Thanks Novice7 (Talk) 04:53, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Novice, I appreciate that. I don't have any Whitney photos right now, but I'll keep my eyes peeled. She's notoriously difficult to photograph. --David Shankbone 05:18, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
LOL. Anyways, thanks for replying David. Novice7 (Talk) 14:35, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was going to throw the {{Press}} template on the talk page after coming across this 2008 story at AVN (RS per the related project) but then had second thoughts since it looks like it was drama. Anyways, do you have the link available to the wikinews write-up? I'm all sorts of curious now.Cptnono (talk) 09:56, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cptnono - I'm not sure if there ever was a Wikinews write-up or not, but it was a dramatic time that, in hindsight, was really just a bunch of nothing except a pain in the butt. Back in 2008 it was difficult to tell whether the situation was serious or not. It ended up just being an obsessed person who clearly needed more to do with his time. Live and learn. --David Shankbone 02:04, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back

A bit late but it appears all the angry wikipedians have come back to play ;-) IvoShandor (talk) 09:52, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ivo - Great to see you here! Oh, I'm not all that angry about anything; life is good. :-) --David Shankbone 01:48, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was only kidding man. I was just thinking back to the good ol' days of Wikidrama, myself included in that one. Great to see you too! I hope all is well. IvoShandor (talk) 09:48, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Things are good - I knew you were kidding and so was I: I AM ANGRY AS HELL!  ;-) It makes me happy you are still here. --David Shankbone 02:50, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NYC Meetup: Saturday, December 4

We meet outside by the trees at 5:00 PM.

Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be 'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying "WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.

This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.

Oh ma gosh!

David, a big welcome back! The resident Madonna stan gives you a proper hug. Hope this is a wonderful beginning for you. Your amazing picture at Madonna is a beacon of light for us. And now I will shamefully probe you with a request. Any recent pic you took of the old bag? The botoxes have really changed her face from the wonderful pic that you took. :) — Legolas (talk2me) 17:11, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Heh - I know, she's changed, though I really don't want to take any shot with her arms. Unfortunately, I've been so busy IRL with my job and friends I haven't been keeping a good eye out for opportunities (She was recently at a party for Jean Paul Gaultier at La Perla). New stuff are things I'm invited to, not my own pursuits. She'd be a great one to do again. I went to photograph David Sedaris and he allowed no press, and no audience member could take photographs. I was so bummed. Apparently he really, really dislikes people taking his picture, press or fan. And thanks for the compliment! --David Shankbone 05:27, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hey David. Just trollin around here. I wanted to say I have no idea how you got such a close up on all these A-listers. Nice job! :D--CallMeNathanTalk2Me 05:18, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - but the only way I did anything I did is because everything you guys all did. If there weren't articles to photograph for, I wouldn't shoot the shots. We all did this together, and when it appears easy or seamless to the outside its only because our collective brilliance makes it seem so. It really is true. --David Shankbone 04:10, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well she isn't called the mistress of re-invention for nothing eh? And oh well... just keep an eye out if you see the old bag anywhere you frequent, didn't you guys knew each other once? — Legolas (talk2me) 17:03, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Madonna and I don't speak, and if you've ever read any of Rupert Everett's writings about falling out with her, you'd understand. Not that I don't think he's a total name-droppy jerk who screwed up every opportunity handed to him and then blamed it on his being frank about his sexuality, which is ridiculous. Anyway - if I photograph her it'll be at a public event that I happen to attend; she won't be inviting me. --David Shankbone 03:10, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Legolas - just if it wasn't clear, that was a joke above - I've never known Madonna :-) --David Shankbone 03:54, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Lol, I did understand that it was a joke David. Anyways, I hope your association with Michael Lucas is going good, although he appears hot headed for some reason. And yeah, Madonna rarely calls anybody in her events does she? Try to go to the opening of her next gym in Moscow. Now that will be an opportunity worth taking a picture for. I would also like to ask you, did you happen to catch Lady Gaga anywhere? — Legolas (talk2me) 10:50, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think often people wear a public persona that is meant to garner attention but doesn't really reflect who they are, particularly when they work in entertainment. I'm hoping that Madonna opens a branch of her gym in New York - how could she not? So maybe then I can get another shot of her. I saw Lady Gaga in concert at Madison Square Garden - the photos are here on my blog or at Flickr, but I didn't think any were worth uploading. Let me know if you feel differently. --David Shankbone 03:49, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I do agree with that, maybe my perception of Lucas is wrong, but oh well. Its unlikely that I will know him personally eh? I loved your images from Gaga's concert, but if Im correct some of them will fail wiki's Freedom of Panorama policy, no? I think you can upload the images of those people in the Gaga costumes. I can use them on the Lady Gaga article to expand on her influence probably. Thanks for all you do David, — Legolas (talk2me) 05:08, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request

[3] When you add a source to an article, could you please format it correctly, i.e. author, article title, publication, date, page number, and date retrieved? That way, if the link disappears, the citation will still work as a source. Also, this article already had a picture of a water horizon, so yours was a duplicate, plus you put your photo above a picture of the earth's horizon from the space shuttle! Could you please be careful when you add photos you have taken to Wikipedia articles to ensure that your photo is really directly related to the article topic? Thank you. Cla68 (talk) 05:41, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I certainly will take those suggestions into account. Happy holidays. --David Shankbone 03:43, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

But you really are back, aren't you? :-D KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 20:39, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oui oui mon frer (sic?). But just with content; no politics ;-) Glad to see you are still here, that's for sure - with a brain better than a Funk & Wagnall's set, this site needs you! --David Shankbone 03:43, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And with your page semi-protected, too, as someone mentioned on my talk page. Message for you, sir! (sound of arrow, thunk) KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 20:47, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I responded on your Talk, but I think it might be time for Grace to have her own article. --David Shankbone 03:43, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You

Whatever the politics, you do good work. Thank you. Bielle (talk) 03:58, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Bielle, I appreciate that note. I hopefully don't let my politics interfere with my Wiki activities, which I hope that my history shows. I was proud that I didn't allow my politics to interfere with my Sarah Palin or Glenn Beck portraits. --David Shankbone 08:35, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think either of them have any cause for complaint, and the rest of us will see what we wish to see almost regardless of what your lens highlights. I am also glad, even when I disagreed strongly with some WP stance you were taking, that you stayed with the project. Bielle (talk) 10:02, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again, I appreciate that :-) and Happy New Year! --David Shankbone 17:27, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Happy New Year

Thank you my friend David. I also wish you a year full of blessings. I have my computer down and work from my daughters whenever I can. Let's see what this new year brings us. Take care. Tony the Marine (talk) 20:39, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lol! Don't forget though...reality film is a subgenre of documentary... :-D You randomly popped into my head about a week ago and I was hoping that you were doing well. Glad to see you are still here. --David Shankbone 01:09, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Magog - Thanks for such high praise, although there are plenty of people who do more than me :-) Funny story - a French friend of mine sometime last fall reference a television show called Julie Lescaut. I looked up the article history and noticed your name, which stuck in my head as it's memorable and I repeated it to myself several times to get the pronunciation down :-) All the g's and o's were swimming in my head. And here you are. I'm okay with the deletion; there's a crop of 2006 "art" photos that I uploaded before I knew better, which are slowly disappearing over time --David Shankbone 23:24, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

for your note. Hope you're well too. :) Steven Walling 07:22, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I found your wikipedia account by random, you do an awesome job here. I love all your pictures and you seem to have incredible skills in getting pictures of famous persons. To my question: Would it be possible to get a picture of Elizabeth Gillies? There isn't any picture of her on wikipedia or flickr. Sadly, I don't know when she will be in New York. I would be very grateful for any help. Best regards, --Simon.hess (talk) 07:57, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Simon - I will be happy to try. Since you follow what she does, could you alert me if you notice she'll be in the city, and maybe I can try to arrange something? That would be a big help. I looked up Burgdorf, Switzerland on Google Images - looks stunning!! --David Shankbone 00:57, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I will alert you if I notice she will be in New York. Thanks for your compliment to Burgdorf. I hope one day to go to "The Big Apple", it's an awesome city. --Simon.hess (talk) 14:48, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

Apologies for the short notice for this meetup, but let's discuss when, where & what for DC Meetup #17. Also, if you haven't yet, please join wikimedia-dc mailing list to stay informed. Cheers, User:Aude (talk)

Hi, Ariana Grande is at New York. She tweeted that this morning over her official twitter account. Can you take a new picture of her and upload it here? That would be so grateful. --Simon.hess (talk) 02:51, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

zach grenier

Hey David - any chance you have a usable shot of Zach Grenier? He was nominated for a Tony a couple of years ago, so I thought it was possible. (He plays David Lee - senior matrimonial lawyer on The Good Wife.) Thanks! Tvoz/talk 17:35, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He would be a good one to get. He's the kind of actor who could very well show up on a Tribeca carpet (which is coming up at the end of this month), so when they release the celebrity tip sheet I will eyeball it for him. I'd like to get an updated Adrian Grenier, too. --David Shankbone 15:01, 9 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wonder if they're related. Thanks as always! Tvoz/talk 18:26, 10 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

oral history

Hi, someone put me onto you, thinking you might have produced and uploaded a few soundfiles to WP articles of interviews you've conducted of people on the topic. I am interested in exploring possibilities for wikimedians produce, edit, upload, and use such soundfiles to illustrate articles on milhist and the history of settlements, in particular. Could be problems with OR? It would have to be trialled carefully if people though it was worth doing. Any ideas? Tony (talk) 11:40, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is a wonderful idea. There has been discussion of it several times in the past; see here on Jimbo's talk page, for example. So long as there's no reasonable doubt who is speaking, and the editor is an established user, it strikes me as a win-win situation. SlimVirgin TALK|CONTRIBS 16:19, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi guys - I would like to give some thoughts, but will do so better in a couple of days. I'm in the middle of photographing at the Tribeca Film Festival (and then Time 100 next week) and running a little ragged. I think it's a good idea too - more thoughts later. --David Shankbone 19:21, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your comments, Slim. That discussion you linked to is mostly about WN, which I believe operates under a badly flawed model—that's a great pity, but I can't see a way around it. On the matter of oral history in en.WP articles, I've been put off a little by comments from a couple of people who raised OR and RS issues. One person said people forget, people exaggerate and distort, and they can get it wrong when recalling their early autobiographical thoughts. That is why, he said, we cite historians and other scholars who skilfully interview such people and weigh up what they say against other sources. I don't disagree with that criticism, but nor do I entirely discount the idea. However, it would have to be applied very very carefully, with strict guidelines. My focus would have been on MilHist and elderly people on the history of settlements. Tony (talk) 02:16, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's true that people forget, exaggerate, and so on, but so long as we treat the interviews as we would any other primary source—or even extend to the interviews the rules about self-published sources—I can't see that it would present a problem. SlimVirgin TALK|CONTRIBS 13:44, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with SV here - if you treat them as primary sources then those rules apply. The question would be to verify identity and their time served - but that night be accomplished through OTRS? Or if there are local news stories about him or her, that would suffice. --David Shankbone 03:30, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I guess we have not much in the way of examples yet. There are, of course, sound bites (possibly free) in libraries and war museums. Where it concerns recordings directly by Wikipedians, one might target a few articles for which examples might be made. It may be a bit controversial. A few guidelines come roughly to mind. What do you think?

A sound bite of a person's commentary/recollections should:

  • be considered only where the material is not already covered in existing sources, or where the sound bite confirms material in existing sources in such a way that improves verification and/or gives another angle to them;
  • provide a unique aid to readers' understanding of the topic;
  • be specific to a specific part of a topic [not sure about this one];
  • be cross-checked for factual accuracy and/or contextual consistency with other sources, where available;
  • be edited down as necessary, while being true to the intended meaning of the speaker, to—
  • provide maximum focus on a specific part of a topic in as brief a duration as possible, and
  • remove any presence of an interviewer
  • be supported by a sound description page that gives all of the details readers would expect (include supporting evidence that the speaker is a reliable source, how the oral text has been edited, time and place and who was involved, etc.).

I had in mind a trial involving a person who took part in or witnessed a specific military event, or someone who witnessed another specific ?dramatic event related to, say, a natural disaster or politics. But I'm still nervous that it might get out of hand. How could quality be maintained, especially the trivial? How could we prevent undesirable bites from the subjects in (barely notable) BLPs? Who wants to know some spectator's opinion of a football match? Or commentary from a minor actor (there are thousands of articles on minor actors that are little more than vanity pieces. Tony (talk) 14:34, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think where we're interviewing witnesses to history, what they said would have to be entirely uncontentious and personal. "I remember that, when the bomb fell, my wife had just made me a cup of tea," kind of thing. The historian Benny Morris has written of his abandonment of any kind of eyewitness statements in Israel-Palestine issues—statements that he used to seek out—because of the problem of distortion, both deliberate and accidental. SlimVirgin TALK|CONTRIBS 14:49, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Is it a matter of steering a course between the trivial (cup of tea), the contentious (unless contextualised as such, or paried with someone with a contrasting view); and in avoiding the rambling and the chatty? I should imagine the tone is hard to get right. They seem to do it well in television and radio documentaries, though.
Despite these issues—in which it's harder to get it right than in quoting published written text—spoken evidence could have a unique role to play in WP: books can't do it, and TV and radio do it in a very different mode. Unsure. Tony (talk) 03:34, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest going with people who are already published as sources, say by a newspaper or in book. There are not many vets left, for instance, and there is a rush to record their memories. Iraq War vets are interviewed for their accounts often. It would be easy to dig around in the local paper for the veteran of some war who was written about in a human interest piece, or quoted for some story. Plus, since they have already been in the press, they are likely to be more open to the idea. That would resolve a lot of issues. --David Shankbone 03:40, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Met

Hey david, were you at the MET Gala yesterday? — Legolas (talk2me) 05:22, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Legolas - it's funny you should ask because every year I think to write for approval to cover it, but I don't. It would be, like, *the* celebrity photography event of the year to cover, including many major people who make rare public appearances. But I was told--I can't confirm if true--that Anna Wintour personally approves the press list, and I find that idea a little daunting. --David Shankbone 22:33, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Haha. You know when I worked for Billboard, we asked her to come to one of the "Billboard Women in Music" events, and she replied "I cvan, but shan't ma'dear", lol. — Legolas (talk2me) 04:52, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thank you, David Shankbone, for your recent helpful edit to the new article I created, at Savage Love: Straight Answers from America's Most Popular Sex Columnist. Much appreciated. ;) You may also be interested in recent efforts I made at expanding the article about the book by the same author, Skipping Towards Gomorrah, with additional sourced info. The Darren Criss article is a BLP thorn in my side, but kudos on the great new pic! Cheers, --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 01:25, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tee hee hee

Gah! lol - those guys are desperate. --David Shankbone 01:42, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, they can't help it if you put gorgeous and "make-them-horny" pics like that. But still, tee heee heee. — Legolas (talk2me) 11:26, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Haha - thanks, but unfortunately that photo is 5 years old, taken when I was 32. I'm an old man now; when I look at that photo I wonder, "How did I ever get these love handles? I was the same weight back then and I didn't have them." Le sigh. --David Shankbone 21:43, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Lol, you should ask Michael Lucas to give you some pointers. Heck even I should take some pointers from him to remain gorgeous at this age. I'm straight but still envy his looks. — Legolas (talk2me) 06:42, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Waking up to a Rufus Wainwright FA was a treat, and your fab picture on the main page was certainly the cherry on top. Thanks for everything you do around here. Cheers, --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 12:57, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bah! I missed it! Thank you for letting me know :-D And thank you for everything you do around here, too. --David Shankbone 01:33, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You missed it? That's unfortunate...it was unequivocally sexy and perfectly representational. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 01:39, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've always wanted to change the coloring in the article lead shot to match the color in this one. I met him at a bar in the East Village called The Phoenix back in 2006, and since my friend was really into him we struck up a conversation (he was alone, and sober). We ended up hanging out with him for half an hour or so, but it was mostly for my friend's benefit. He was really nice! Charming, engaging. I'm not familiar with his work, though I appreciate what he's accomplished. --David Shankbone 01:48, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's a fantastic story. His work is certainly worth familiarizing yourself with, it's quite brilliant. (teaser; covering the irreproachable Leonard Cohen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQK4YfiPj1Q and the ubiquitous Beatles cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAe1lVDbLf0). --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 02:02, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was trying to play wingman for my friend, but it went nowhere for him - maybe I'm a bad wingman. Thanks for the suggestions for a good starting place. I'll take them up. Have a good night Ponyo. --David Shankbone 03:11, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of Elizabeth Gillies 2

Hi, I asked you to take an image of Liz Gillies in February, I hope you remember. Now I have noticed that Liz will be in New York today. You can read it by yourself in this tweet from her. Sadly, I don't know where she will be and what she will do in NY. Maybe she will post some more details on twitter. I hope I alert you in time to take a picture of her. I would be grateful if you can catch her, thanks a lot. Regards --Simon.hess (talk) 19:57, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Simon - I only just saw this. I wouldn't have been able to photograph her on such short notice, because I have to contact the pr people orchestrating whatever event she is doing when in town. So many people have to clear you these days. I'm not a paparazzo (so I wouldn't run out to the airport or to her hotel to shoot her) but an event photographer, usually classified as press. I have to be able to arrange something, and that usually takes at least a few days lead time. Sorry! If you get a tip with more advance notice let me know. I hope all is good with you. --David Shankbone 05:08, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi David, Thanks for your answer. If I notice that she will be on a public event I let you know. Thank you anyway. I'm fine how are you? --Simon.hess (talk) 01:06, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Strange request

David, I have a kind of strange request. Well, we all know of the infamous Meat dress of Lady Gaga. I was wondering if you, or any of your photographer friends have a picture of her wearing the dress and willing to release it in commons? Will you please ask? Pretty please -_- :) — Legolas (talk2me) 13:20, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh trust me, I wouldn't hold back any Gaga photos, littlelone that masterpiece! --David Shankbone 05:10, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Lol, god knows how she carried that off. Well David, will you please ask your friends if they have one? — Legolas (talk2me) 07:43, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll ask around but that one is probably pretty valuable to the people who make money off their photos. Can't hurt to ask even if they have a semi-crappy one they'd release. --David Shankbone 19:21, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Tony

Hi Gavid, how you doing? I haven't heard from you in a long time. How's things in New York? Over here it is really hot. So, what do you have planned for your Birthday. I have been having some problems here. You'd be surprise how far some people are willing to go to bring you down. Let's keep it touch. Tony the Marine (talk) 04:25, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Things are going well for an old man turning 37 - time really starts to fly by the older I get. I responded to your post on my Facebook wall; sorry you've had to deal with that challenge, and sorry you are having to deal with problems here now, as well :-/ --David Shankbone 14:38, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Marcus

I spent some time looking for sources, and there's a bunch in the archives if you are interested. There's a syndicated story by George Will (he wrote it on Oct. 25) that went out across the wires on October 26, 2009 (copy) that makes the unbelievable claim that Marcus didn't know his wife was running for State Senator. Viriditas (talk) 09:36, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Viriditas - Since I created the article I thought I would let other editors shape it, so I'm going to back away for now. As always, it's good to still see you here - almost 7 years for you! I hope all is well. --David Shankbone 15:40, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, David. I'm curious about something: since you were at the 2011 TIME 100 event with Michelle Bachmann, didn't you take some photographs of her husband? Viriditas (talk) 03:34, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
