Flag icons

Hi. I disagree that names of countries need icons next to them. MOSICON says they should “help the reader rather than decorate,” and specifically‘’’ to “provide additional essential information or needed illustration”.

But it's good that this is coming up. The guideline is not specific enough, and both my interpretation and yours may be valid ones. I'd like to settle this question once and for all, so we can stop revert-warring over this. We need to get the community to form a consensus, either about this type of use of icons in general, or this specific application of them in infoboxes. I've started a discussion thread at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history#Flag icons guidelines. Please let's discuss there. Michael Z. 2008-12-12 17:01 z

Linking complete nouns

Nitpicky, but I don't see how this “fixes” the links. Sentences are easier to read when noun phrases are linked as a unit, as T-34 medium tank, rather than separating their proper names as if they were isolated adjectives, like T-34 medium tank. See also WP:R#NOTBROKENMichael Z. 2009-02-10 22:17 z

Image permission problem with Image:VSS Rifle Iron Sights.jpg

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:VSS Rifle Iron Sights.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Saddo

Oh sorry... God you're sad, you spend your life studying guns, get a life, who cares about my name change, it's the proper name for the weapon anyway, so don't act like a teacher, obssessive control freak #rolleyes —Preceding unsigned comment added by 07ed01 (talkcontribs) 16:28, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Stepanov RPK-74.jpg : Deletion Request

The photo File:Stepanov RPK-74.jpg, which you uploaded on Wikipedia, has been transferred to Wikimedia Commons. Unfortunately someone has filed a deletion request, claiming that there is no evidence of permission by the photographer. Could you please explain the situation at the deletion discussion page Commons:Deletion requests/File:Stepanov RPK-74.jpg ? Sv1xv (talk) 17:18, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

July 2009

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 1 week in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for personal attacks per ANI discussion. Please stop. You are welcome to make useful contributions after the block expires. If you believe this block is unjustified you may contest this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below. A note of support

Just wanted to say I disagree completely with this block and that I think it's a crock. There's something very wrong when a random user can appear out of nowhere, mess around with article layouts, and then get prominent editors blocked for disagreeing with them. Commander Zulu (talk) 22:03, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Advanced trolling. This one can maunuever around policies rather effectively. Not that he'll be able to change anything. The "new" layout established on the MilHist discussion page is a mirror copy of a page layout I had proposed almost a year ago. So he's wasted a good deal of time re-inventing something that's been around in the same form for a long time. The futility of his butthurt crusade is entertaining and somewhat sad. 173.34.97.54 (talk) 13:28, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear, the editor wasn't "blocked for disagreeing with them." This editor was blocked for repeat offenses of WP:NPA per consensus on ANI. Toddst1 (talk) 14:08, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You keep telling yourself that. By punishing greatly exaggerated NPA violations, your block excluded me from the ongoing dispute, and had the effect of basically blocking me for disagreeing with the agitator. 173.34.97.54 (talk) 18:23, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You never participated in the discussion that you demanded take place even before you were blocked. The substance of our discussion is that subsections are allowed and that the guidelines are not strict rules that will be followed exactly by every article. You have to stop

I agree that User:Some guy has been baiting you and Nukes4Tots - but I can't help the situation going forwards if you keep doing things like very transparently evading the block you got for being really rude to him.

You aren't helping yourself by block evasion. It just makes you look bad to other administrators.

Please take the two weeks off and let me deal with the baiting situation if it continues after that.

Thank you. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 20:49, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Enough

I've removed the latest personal attack from your talk page. I've extended your block to 1 month and removed your ability to edit this page since it appears you are uninterested in appealing the block, rather perpetuating the offenses that got you blocked. Toddst1 (talk) 22:41, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some guy ANI

I have started an ANI discussion on Some guy: WP:ANI#Some guy You may want to email me comments for posting there. Thank you. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 05:09, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not revert my edits without explanation. We had a very long discussion at MilHist and established a consensus agreement that subsections are acceptable. I don't want to go back into fighting and edit warring. Some guy (talk) 02:42, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am reworking the page. It is in progress. Your edition was illogical. Koalorka (talk) 02:47, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You can't tell me I am not allowed to work on a page because you are working on it. Could you please explain how my addition was illogical? Some guy (talk) 02:55, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I believe I just did. The definition for the word "illogical" can be looked up easily. Koalorka (talk) 02:57, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's a circular definition. Saying it is illogical because it is illogical doesn't explain why it's illogical. Since this conversation isn't really going anywhere, and what you did with the page is good, I'll leave off. I hope we can avoid edit battles and confrontations. Some guy (talk) 03:13, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'm glad I have your approval, it really means a lot to me. Especially coming from someone that has sacrificed so much of his (her?) time to improving pages related to the Nintendo DS. We can finally bury the hatchet. Koalorka (talk) 03:17, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
