Editable part[edit]

{{editprotected}} Please read Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Special pages

Please make a more specific request: tell us what code needs changing how. Sandstein (talk) 23:13, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, please add {{Specialpages-summary| at the very beginning, and }} at the end. 16@r (talk) 00:24, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As stated on the post on the village pump, template parameters do not work on MediaWiki pages. Harryboyles 04:08, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so just replace all the message by {{ {{PAGENAME}} }} and it should works. 16@r (talk) 14:57, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not done. Try as I may, I can't figure out what the intention of this is. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:19, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, now it works, you can use the template {{Specialpages-summary}}. 16@r (talk) 19:52, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now I see what you're suggesting, it seems to be a bad idea. Do you have much of an idea which bits are editable, and how small some of them are? For instance, it would be kind of silly to have a cyan box with borders and an edit link around every occurrence of the word "Administrator" on Special:Listusers, and there are many other examples along the same lines. --ais523 20:02, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
Sorry I didn't specify this part, I only intend to apply my template to the editable summaries of the special pages (according to Special:Specialpages, there is apparently 64 special pages), not all the system messages appearing in a special page. As for the layout of my template:Specialpages (cyan), it can be modified if you don't like it. 16@r (talk) 20:51, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Special:Allpages doesn't have any as far as I can tell. For other pages, like Special:Blockip (admin-only), it covers most of the page. --ais523 21:11, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
There is MediaWiki:Allpages-summary if you want to add an introduction to Special:Allpages. But for the moment, what I would like to do is to apply my new template to the existing summaries (at least those readable by anyone). So can you please replace the content of the page MediaWiki:Specialpages-summary by {{ {{PAGENAME}} }}. 16@r (talk) 23:36, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
MediaWiki:Specialpages-summary only appears on Special:Specialpages, so this change would not have the effect you desire. Even if it did appear on every special page, it would cause the special page to transclude itself; special page transclusion normally doesn't work, and even in the cases where it does it's meaningless for a page to transclude itself outside a noinclude. --ais523 11:26, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

It's not a self-inclusion. on "MediaWiki:Specialpages-summary", {{PAGENAME}}=Specialpages-summary, so it will include {{Specialpages-summary}} which is not "MediaWiki:Specialpages-summary". For the other special pages, I will make other requests. And there is no <noinclude> or <includeonly> in this story.. 16@r (talk) 11:59, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there'd be no way I'd transclude an unprotected template in an interface message, and protecting it would rather defeat the point of the request. And if you're transcluding just for one page, why not write it as {{Specialpages-summary}} (or better still, {{MediaWiki specialpages-summary}} to fit the usual naming conventions), and save the confusion of what it means? And your request wouldn't do what you want; {{PAGENAME}} on Special:Specialpages is actually "Specialpages" not "Specialpages-summary", because the magic word picks up the name of the special page being viewed, not the name of the interface message it's on, when viewed via the special page. --ais523 20:45, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

☒N Edit declined. There's currently no consensus for this change. Sandstein (talk) 20:53, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Links missing from Special:Specialpages?[edit]

{{editprotected}} This isn't quite the right place to make this request, but its the closest one I cound find. I notice there are several special pages listed in Help:Special_page that aren't listed in the supposed list of all special pages at Special:Specialpages:

And one useful special page that was't listed in either (I fixed Help:):

Can this be fixed? 71.41.210.146 (talk) 13:39, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. As it says on the page, the list is generated by the server and can't be changed through the interface. Also, some of those are listed at Special:Specialpages if your account has the necessary rights: Special:Oversight, Special:BlockIP (which generates the same link Special:Block does), Special:Import, Special:Undelete, Special:CheckUser (and you're probably missing some other ones like Special:UnwatchedPages, Special:GlobalBlockWhitelist, Special:UserRights, Special:DeletedContributions, ...).
Special:ListAdmins would be nice, but is only a synonym of Special:ListUsers/sysop. Special:Confirmemail and Special:Userlogout are indeed missing, not sure why, as are the the Special:My* pages.
Best I can tell this could only be changed in the php code though, so you'd have to open a WP:BUG at bugzilla if you feel strongly about it.

Help:SpecialPages may be helpful. That was up-to-date as of last December; it will need to be updated as new special pages are added or deprecated special pages are removed. – wbm1058 (talk) 23:39, 17 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dead Special Pages[edit]

{{editprotected}} I'm not sure if this is the right place to raise this, but here goes: A number of special pages listed in the Maintenance reports category have been inactive for a considerable amount of time. It seems confusing to have them there when they are no longer useful, could they be removed or somehow noted as inactive until such time as they are active again?

Dormant pages — "The following information is cached, and was last updated 21:06, 19 October 2009."
Orphaned pages — "The following information is cached, and was last updated 22:58, 1 October 2009."
Pages with the fewest revisions — "The following information is cached, and was last updated 10:35, 2 September 2007. "

I'm not sure how much admins are able to change the page, but it doesn't seem productive to have them there. Monty845 (talk) 19:13, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, this is not the right page. All I can do is to edit the message at the top of Special:SpecialPages, not to amend the links. This is likely to need developer intervention. I would suggest starting a thread on WP:VPT about this, and then possibly a request on Bugzilla. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:18, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Table of contents on this page and Special:SpecialPages[edit]

Hello, starting next week, MediaWiki will automatically generate a table of contents on Special:SpecialPages. See T326130 for discussion about the change. You can preview how it will look like at https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Special:SpecialPages (in different skins: Vector legacy (2010) / Vector (2022)).

Therefore, the manually created table of contents on this page will no longer be needed. If no one objects, I will remove it next week after the new version of MediaWiki is deployed. Matma Rex talk 23:57, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Protected edit request on 9 April 2024[edit]

In the context, the last paragraph states to editors that an index to all special pages are found at the help page for special pages. For convenience, make the edit as described in this diff. Toadette (Let's talk together!) 17:46, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
