Instead it will be someplace inside here.

Who should come? You should. Really.
If you are interested in Wikipedia or other Wikimedia projects, regardless of your level of experience or involvement, or if you are otherwise involved in with free content you are invited and welcome.

Attending[edit]

If you're driving and can give others a ride, please say so!

*user:Martschink - Tree Martschink he can't make it now

  • User:Remember
  • User:Newyorkbrad - I needed to visit D.C. for some research during the next month, so I'll make it this weekend
  • User:Swatjester I was there, and drunk. SWATJester Denny Crane. 01:18, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, despite my wikibreak. Coredesat 21:29, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • I was there, even though I showed up 30 minutes late due to traffic. --Coredesat 05:51, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • User:Immunity - sorry I missed it.
  • User:Mcpaige - I up and decided to go.
  • User:Aude - Uno Chicago Grill at Union Station is lame (sorry), but if Newyorkbrad (fun to meet you last time in NYC) and others will be there, that will help make up for it. I suggest maybe a group of us hit the Brickskeller or someplace later. Next time, I recommend RFD, which despite it's large selection of beer, is family/kid friendly (no problems for any younger Wikipedians), good for groups, and other advantages. [1] --Aude (talk) 17:32, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • User:JayHenry — Jay Henry, Wikipedia's primary contributor of Hippocruft.
  • User:RWilliamKing - As a relatively obscure wikipedia occasional-poster/assignment zero/offthebus contributor I will probably show to meet some of you. But I'll feel silly asking where the "Wikipedia people" are.
  • Arch dude 19:32, 21 July 2007 (UTC): see you there![reply]
  • User:Moxfyre I was there! MOXFYRE (contrib) 23:40, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe[edit]

  • I hope, we'll see if this works out or not. I'd love to, though. ^demon[omg plz] 03:08, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I pretty sure I'll be there (80%, I'd say). Is Mike Godwin going to be there? Please make sure the venue is accessible from the metro. Raul654 03:08, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes...the Uno Chicago Grill is definitely accessible from the Union Station Metro. Lwalt ♦ talk 20:38, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Union Station is itself a Metro stop. —xanderer 21:10, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'm planning on being there. (This doesn't really belong in the Maybe section, so sue me. MikeGodwin 03:22, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Bringing suit against our new Legal Counsel strikes me as a particularly ill advised course of action, even for the likes of this crowd, but perhaps that is just me? However, you gotta work on that user page of yours, it is boring! ++Lar: t/c 13:15, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • cgilbert - I am keeping it in mind.
  • Definite maybe. See the wikibreak box on my user page for why. --Coredesat 08:35, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll come if you pick another place besides Union Station. (see talk) There are so many much better places to spend a Saturday evening. --Aude (talk) 14:54, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • On this point: Most meetups run for 2 hours or so at the offical location, then the group interested in hanging out longer will migrate to another location. I'd expect we'd do the same thing. --Gmaxwell 16:19, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not saying 100%, but I'd say it's pretty darn likely I'll be there. It's also not a bad Metro ride for me, going from Glenmont to Union Station. SchuminWeb (Talk) 16:18, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll consider it, although I fear I'll be a bit on the young side (especially considering Aude's first alternative suggestion). Also, I have another, conflicting event I might go to instead. -- tariqabjotu 16:35, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Young people are welcome, though really young folks should bring a parent along. One of the people to attend the last NY meetup was ~13. Accessibility to all ages is why most Wikipedia meetups don't make a bar their primary meeting location. I hope you can make it, but if you can't there is always next time. --Gmaxwell 16:44, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • RFD is just a normal restaurant, but with a large selection of beer and good food. Young people are welcome and families with children come all the time, such as before Washington Capitals or Washington Wizards games. That's why I won't recommend the Brickskeller. --Aude (talk) 16:58, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll almost certainly be there! I live only a hop, skip, and a jump from Union Station. MOXFYRE (contrib) 18:03, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I can't make any promises, but I'll try to be there. — Malik Shabazz (Talk | contribs) 19:38, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll have to see how my schedule works out. The notice is pretty short, but OTOH getting to Union Station is no problem; the only thing is whether I can spare the time. -- BRG 17:19, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like I'll update that from "maybe" to "probably will." I'll probably get away from what I'm doing that day early enough that 5pm at Union Station will be easy. -- BRG 18:52, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sounds cool. Definitely will try.--Patrick 02:26, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll try. No guarantees -- JAF1970 06:42, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll make the attempt... David Fuchs 12:27, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • More than likely that I won't be able to join until after 6pm. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 13:09, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Absolutely I want to come, but I may be in Connecticut for a trip. I'll try my best though. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep me posted on upcoming Meet Ups, both in VA and in the DC area. Thanks!! :D -- Zidel333
  • User:JohnPomeranz — John Pomeranz. This occassional WP editor is curious and will try to come.
  • User:Goldenliquid-I could drive to DC, but I would need someone to drive me, I probably won't end up coming, but I'll try.
    • I probably can't drive you.. but if you're looking for someone here who might be able to you should state where you are and move your name to the section below this one. :) --Gmaxwell 19:06, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I hope to come. David in DC 19:31, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've been looking for an excuse to do some Library of Congress research, like Newyorkbrad, so I'm hoping I can also make this my first opportunity to meet my fellow Wikimedians. Barring disasters, I'll be coming by Metro. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 02:05, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've gotta see what work needs to be done, otherwise I should be able to hop over. Thanks, I appreciate the invite! --Denki 13:25, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • My last weekend in Baltimore... I am not sure what my girlfriend and I are doing, but If I can, I will be there! -Maiios 17:20, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I might be able to make it, but due to my physical infirmaries, I may not be up to attending. Would love to come... Scarletsmith 18:36, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll try to be there, if I'm not doing anything else between 5-6pm that Saturday. Zaindy87 14:12, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Maybe, depends on the Metro. --Woogers 23:21, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Might be possible, after all. Will be visiting some sights on the Mall with my son, and Union Station is not a bad venue for chop. If anyone involved in the language project or Afrophonewikis will be there, I'd be personally more likely to make the effort. My son (age 10) has taken an active interest in Wikipedia as a source of info on automobiles, and he might be interested to see folks who work on Wikipedia. (Also, as a parent I'm curious to know whether there are other parents looking for ways to most appropriately facilitate their children's involvement, and what WMF's thinking is about younger Wikipedians.) --A12n 02:33, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'll try to be there. ~a (usertalkcontribs) 17:07, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I want to come, but I need a ride[edit]

I have a problem because I'm wheelchair bound. I can get in and out of a normal vehicle, but otherwise it's a big production to take a bus and a train or paratransit. If someone can offer me a ride on the way there and back (or at least there; once I'm there I can probably take public transportation back), let me know. I live in Arlington, three blocks from King Street and Quaker Lane in Alexandria and four miles from the Pentagon. If you can, reply to me here or send me an e-mail to paul (at) paul-robinson.us. If I don't hear anything by Friday I'll figure that I'll have to try to get there on my own. Paul Robinson (Rfc1394) 06:57, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, but let me know about future events[edit]

  • Especially if they are weekdays. (when I am sometimes in town) I can't make this saturday one, sniff. ++Lar: t/c 03:09, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the invite. I'm going to OBX that weekend. Being in RVA, and having no car may also be problematic in the future, but maybe we could get an RVA carpool going next time? Who knows, thanks again.-Andrew c [talk] 04:42, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have to work that night (and I also live in Richmond, which means getting up there is a bit of commitment), but I'm interested in possibly going to one of these as long as I'm notified far enough in advance. --Redeagle688 23:30, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Unfortunately, wife and I have prior commitments that day. Any chance we get a meetup in Baltimore someday? Wildthing61476 00:38, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Keep me posted on future events, though; I like Washington, it's been awhile since I've gone and I've wanted to see a Nats game for awhile now. ekedolphin 00:13, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Unfortunately I won't be able to make it, much as I'd like to. The bar exam is nigh, and besides, I tend to be busy Saturdays. Happy birthday, Syrthiss! -- Y not? 04:28, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • An excellent opportunity, but one I'll unfortunately have to pass up because of a long-standing family commitment on the 21st.  FYI, I've got temp sysop/administrator permissions to get the tpi.Wikipedia and tpi.Wiktionary back on their feet (TPI = "Tok Pisin", a neo-Melanesian pidgin English lingua franca used extensively throughout Papua New Guinea and surrounding islands of Melanesia).  I'm "crash coursing" on Administrator functions/capabilities, know a whole lot more about the innards of Wikipedias than I did before, but could really use some 'one-on-ones' and group discussions about Wikipedias/Wiktionaries in general.  So, if there are any Wikipedians in Maryland's North Bay counties (Baltimore, Cecil, Carroll, and Harford) who also can't make the DC meetup, but would still like to get together, maybe we can do an informal sub-group meetup locally, say in a month or so? Kanta katch (PNG's Sepik River region tok for "catch you later") K. Kellogg-Smith 11:52, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I won't actually arrive in Baltimore until the 22nd, but would be interested in knowing more about these things. By the way, how did the system know to flag my page as someone who might want to attend? --Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 14:55, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Reply moved to talk.

  • I am hugely pregnant right now and I barely venture outside of the A/C to get my mail, let alone trudge around DC in the heat and humidity. Perhaps next time (and with more notice, too). --ScreaminEagle 22:50, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, and I'm not interested in attending any others either[edit]

How can I help?[edit]

  • Whether or not you can come, you can still encourage other available people to attend.
  • If you're driving and can offer a ride, please say so.

5pm is late, I want to do something beforehand too.[edit]

Want a pre-meetup outing? Suggest it here.

  • There is, of course, the Smithsonians (which close at 5 or 5:30 - I can't remember which). The White House tour takes 6 months of advance notice (background checks). The Capitol tour is a possibility (it's neat if you've never done it before) but the gallery tour (which I really want to do) is not available on a Saturday when congress isn't in session. The Supreme Court building is closed for the summer for rennovations. (Also, so is the Smithsonian american history museum). Raul654 03:33, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I may be doing some research at the Library of Congress if anyone wants to meet around there for lunch. Newyorkbrad 00:22, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Any place in mind? SWATJester Denny Crane. 01:21, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • FYI - in order to get into the book section of the LOC, you need a Library-of-Congress ID. You can obtain one in the basement of the Madison building. Also, they don't allow most kinds of electronic equipment. Raul654 15:40, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • I didn't have a specific place in mind, but am quite open to suggestions. Raul654, thanks for the info, although I've been there before. Newyorkbrad 21:25, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
          • I plan to be digging around in Jefferson and Madison Bldgs. for some WP and WQ research, so I'd be up to a lunch(ish) pre-meeting in the vicinity. Just need to know where by 06:00 EDT Saturday. (I have no ideas. I'd prefer inexpensive & close by, as I have a 6-month LoC backlog to work off.) ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:29, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
            • My day plans have changed somewhat; probably won't be available for lunch. (Will still be at the main meet-up at 5:00). Newyorkbrad 22:57, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The night will be young! I want to do something afterward too.[edit]

  • That's cool, too. Suggest something when the crowd starts to disperse and you decide if you're sick of everyone or not! Or place suggestions here.

Directions[edit]

The DC metro system is one of the highest regarded public transportation systems in the United States. Normally this isn't saying much, but the system is rather good. All directions given will be provided in terms of the Washington Metro system. Note that there is also a decently-sized parking lot at Union Station itself, so you may just want to drive all the way in. Beware, however, that it can get quite crowded and the prices may be steep.

Several Stations, including Silver Spring, Landover and others have significant amounts (as in hundreds of spaces) of parking, and it's free on weekends.

Metro allows bicycles[2] (But only if you have a permit; and you have to apply well in advance (as in several weeks) to get one.) This hasn't been the case in quite a long time, but they are not allowed during weekday rush hours (7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.) or on major holidays (pretty much only the 4th of July) Aaronw 17:05, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NOTE: Information about the weekend schedule for Metrorail can be be found here (Adobe Acrobat Reader required for viewing), and information about Metrorail fare passes and farecards can be found here. Lwalt ♦ talk 20:57, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's also worth noting that parking is free on weekends at Metro-operated lots. SchuminWeb (Talk) 05:26, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • To the DC metro system
    • Via car:
      • From the south:
        • Drive north on I-95 until the traffic stinks (yes, even on Saturday), and around that point take the Franconia Road exit (Exit 169). Drive east, then turn right at the second light on to Frontier Drive. Continue to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station (on the Blue Line); parking is available.
        or
        • Drive north on I-95 until you get to Exit 176A (Huntington Avenue). Continue to the Huntington Metro Station (on the Yellow Line); parking is available.
      • From the northwest:
      • From the northeast:
        • Drive south on I-95 and get off at Exit 23, an exit designed just for the Greenbelt Metro station (on the Green Line); parking is available. (Note that if you're coming north on I-95 you cannot get off at Exit 23 and will instead have to get off at Exit 25, make a left, make a U-turn at the following traffic light and then go back onto I-95 South; so don't come north on I-95!).
      • From the east:
        • Drive west on US-50 and get off at exit 6 (Garden City Drive). (You could also get off at 7B, but I'm afraid I'll confuse you with that.) Either way, you'll arrive at the New Carrollton Metro Station (on the Orange Line); parking is available.
      • From the west:
    • Via train:
    • Via air:
    • Fly to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
      • Take the bus from the airport to Rosslyn metro station ($3)
      or
      • Take the Washington Flyer bus to West Falls Church metro station ($9)
      or
      • Take a cab to West Falls Church metro station (about $45)
    • From either Rosslyn or West Falls Church, take the Orange Line to Metro Center, and take the Red Line to Union Station.
    • Fly to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
      • Exit airport terminal on foot, follow signs to the Metro
      • Take the Yellow Line to Gallery Place-Chinatown, then the Red Line to Union Station.
    • Fly to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
      • Take the shuttle bus to the BWI train station.
      • Take an Amtrak train to Washington-Union Station (or a MARC Train if you're coming on a weekday); you might want to plan ahead with this one
      or
  • To the meeting location, via Metro:
    • Take the Red Line to Union Station.
